Surah Al-Hijr

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 15:1

   الٓر ۚ تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ وَقُرْءَانٍ مُّبِينٍ﴿١﴾

   ʾ-l-r (ˈalif lām rā) tilka ˈāyātu l-kitābi wa-qurˈānin mubīnin

   Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the signs of the Book and a manifest Quran.

2. 15:2

   رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ مُسْلِمِينَ﴿٢﴾

   rubamā yawaddu llaḏīna kafarū law kānū muslimīna

   Much will the faithless wish that they had been Muslims.

3. 15:3

   ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا۟ وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ وَيُلْهِهِمُ ٱلْأَمَلُ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ﴿٣﴾

   ḏarhum yaˈkulū wa-yatamattaʿū wa-yulhihimu l-ʿamalu fa-sawfa yaʿlamūna

   Leave them to eat and enjoy and to be diverted by longings. Soon they will know.

4. 15:4

   وَمَآ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ مَّعْلُومٌ﴿٤﴾

   wa-mā ˈahlaknā min qaryatin ˈillā wa-lahā kitābun maʿlūmun

   We did not destroy any town but that it had a known term.

5. 15:5

   مَّا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ﴿٥﴾

   mā tasbiqu min ˈummatin ˈaǧalahā wa-mā yastaˈḫirūna

   No nation can advance its time nor can it defer it.

6. 15:6

   وَقَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِى نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ﴿٦﴾

   wa-qālū yā-ˈayyuhā llaḏī nuzzila ʿalayhi ḏ-ḏikru ˈinnaka la-maǧnūnun

   They said, ‘O you, to whom the Reminder has been sent down, you are indeed crazy.

7. 15:7

   لَّوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ﴿٧﴾

   law mā taˈtīnā bi-l-malāˈikati ˈin kunta mina ṣ-ṣādiqīna

   Why do you not bring us the angels should you be truthful?!’

8. 15:8

   مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوٓا۟ إِذًا مُّنظَرِينَ﴿٨﴾

   mā nunazzilu l-malāˈikata ˈillā bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-mā kānū ˈiḏan munẓarīna

   We do not send down the angels except with due reason, and then they will not be granted any respite.

9. 15:9

   إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ﴿٩﴾

   ˈinnā naḥnu nazzalnā ḏ-ḏikra wa-ˈinnā lahū la-ḥāfiẓūna

   Indeed We have sent down the Reminder, and indeed We will preserve it.

10. 15:10

    وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ فِى شِيَعِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ﴿١٠﴾

    wa-la-qad ˈarsalnā min qablika fī šiyaʿi l-ˈawwalīna

    Certainly We sent [apostles] before you to former communities,

11. 15:11

    وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ﴿١١﴾

    wa-mā yaˈtīhim min rasūlin ˈillā kānū bihī yastahziˈūna

    and there did not come to them any apostle but that they used to deride him.

12. 15:12

    كَذَٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهُۥ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ﴿١٢﴾

    ka-ḏālika naslukuhū fī qulūbi l-muǧrimīna

    That is how We let it pass through the hearts of the guilty:

13. 15:13

    لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ ۖ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ﴿١٣﴾

    lā yuˈminūna bihī wa-qad ḫalat sunnatu l-ˈawwalīna

    they do not believe in it, and the precedent of the ancients has already passed.

14. 15:14

    وَلَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَابًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَظَلُّوا۟ فِيهِ يَعْرُجُونَ﴿١٤﴾

    wa-law fataḥnā ʿalayhim bāban mina s-samāˈi fa-ẓallū fīhi yaʿruǧūna

    Were We to open for them a gate of the sky, so that they could go on ascending through it,

15. 15:15

    لَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَـٰرُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ مَّسْحُورُونَ﴿١٥﴾

    la-qālū ˈinnamā sukkirat ˈabṣārunā bal naḥnu qawmun masḥūrūna

    they would surely say, ‘Indeed a spell has been cast on our eyes; indeed, we are a bewitched lot.’

16. 15:16

    وَلَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ بُرُوجًا وَزَيَّنَّـٰهَا لِلنَّـٰظِرِينَ﴿١٦﴾

    wa-la-qad ǧaʿalnā fī s-samāˈi burūǧan wa-zayyannāhā li-n-nāẓirīna

    Certainly We have appointed houses in the sky and adorned them for the onlookers,

17. 15:17

    وَحَفِظْنَـٰهَا مِن كُلِّ شَيْطَـٰنٍ رَّجِيمٍ﴿١٧﴾

    wa-ḥafiẓnāhā min kulli šayṭānin raǧīmin

    and We have guarded them from every outcast Satan,

18. 15:18

    إِلَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَرَقَ ٱلسَّمْعَ فَأَتْبَعَهُۥ شِهَابٌ مُّبِينٌ﴿١٨﴾

    ˈillā mani staraqa s-samʿa fa-ˈatbaʿahū šihābun mubīnun

    except someone who may eavesdrop, whereat there pursues him a manifest flame.

19. 15:19

    وَٱلْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَـٰهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ مَّوْزُونٍ﴿١٩﴾

    wa-l-ˈarḍa madadnāhā wa-ˈalqaynā fīhā rawāsiya wa-ˈanbatnā fīhā min kulli šayˈin mawzūnin

    And We spread out the earth, and cast in it firm mountains, and We grew in it every kind of balanced thing,

20. 15:20

    وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَـٰيِشَ وَمَن لَّسْتُمْ لَهُۥ بِرَٰزِقِينَ﴿٢٠﴾

    wa-ǧaʿalnā lakum fīhā maʿāyiša wa-man lastum lahū bi-rāziqīna

    and made in it [various] means of livelihood for you and for those whom you do not provide for.

21. 15:21

    وَإِن مِّن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا عِندَنَا خَزَآئِنُهُۥ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِقَدَرٍ مَّعْلُومٍ﴿٢١﴾

    wa-ˈin min šayˈin ˈillā ʿindanā ḫazāˈinuhū wa-mā nunazziluhū ˈillā bi-qadarin maʿlūmin

    There is not a thing but that its sources are with Us, and We do not send it down except in a known measure.

22. 15:22

    وَأَرْسَلْنَا ٱلرِّيَـٰحَ لَوَٰقِحَ فَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً فَأَسْقَيْنَـٰكُمُوهُ وَمَآ أَنتُمْ لَهُۥ بِخَـٰزِنِينَ﴿٢٢﴾

    wa-ˈarsalnā r-riyāḥa lawāqiḥa fa-ˈanzalnā mina s-samāˈi māˈan fa-ˈasqaynākumūhu wa-mā ˈantum lahū bi-ḫāzinīna

    And We send the fertilizing winds and send down water from the sky providing it for you to drink and you are not maintainers of its resources.

23. 15:23

    وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُحْىِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحْنُ ٱلْوَٰرِثُونَ﴿٢٣﴾

    wa-ˈinnā la-naḥnu nuḥyī wa-numītu wa-naḥnu l-wāriṯūna

    Indeed it is We who give life and bring death and We are the inheritors.

24. 15:24

    وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَـْٔخِرِينَ﴿٢٤﴾

    wa-la-qad ʿalimnā l-mustaqdimīna minkum wa-la-qad ʿalimnā l-mustaˈḫirīna

    Certainly We know the predecessors among you and certainly We know the successors,

25. 15:25

    وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ﴿٢٥﴾

    wa-ˈinna rabbaka huwa yaḥšuruhum ˈinnahū ḥakīmun ʿalīmun

    and indeed it is your Lord who will resurrect them. Indeed, He is all-wise, all-knowing.

26. 15:26

    وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِن صَلْصَـٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ﴿٢٦﴾

    wa-la-qad ḫalaqnā l-ˈinsāna min ṣalṣālin min ḥamaˈin masnūnin

    Certainly We created man out of a dry clay [drawn] from an aging mud,

27. 15:27

    وَٱلْجَآنَّ خَلَقْنَـٰهُ مِن قَبْلُ مِن نَّارِ ٱلسَّمُومِ﴿٢٧﴾

    wa-l-ǧānna ḫalaqnāhu min qablu min nāri s-samūmi

    and We created the jinn earlier, out of a piercing fire.

28. 15:28

    وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَـٰلِقٌۢ بَشَرًا مِّن صَلْصَـٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ﴿٢٨﴾

    wa-ˈiḏ qāla rabbuka li-l-malāˈikati ˈinnī ḫāliqun bašaran min ṣalṣālin min ḥamaˈin masnūnin

    When your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed I am going to create a human out of a dry clay [drawn] from an aging mud.

29. 15:29

    فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُۥ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَـٰجِدِينَ﴿٢٩﴾

    fa-ˈiḏā sawwaytuhū wa-nafaḫtu fīhi min rūḥī fa-qaʿū lahū sāǧidīna

    So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, then fall down in prostration before him.’

30. 15:30

    فَسَجَدَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ﴿٣٠﴾

    fa-saǧada l-malāˈikatu kulluhum ˈaǧmaʿūna

    Thereat the angels prostrated, all of them together,

31. 15:31

    إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ﴿٣١﴾

    ˈillā ˈiblīsa ˈabā ˈan yakūna maʿa s-sāǧidīna

    but not Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated.

32. 15:32

    قَالَ يَـٰٓإِبْلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ﴿٣٢﴾

    qāla yā-ˈiblīsu mā laka ˈallā takūna maʿa s-sāǧidīna

    He said, ‘O Iblis! What kept you from being among those who have prostrated?’

33. 15:33

    قَالَ لَمْ أَكُن لِّأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن صَلْصَـٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ﴿٣٣﴾

    qāla lam ˈakun li-ˈasǧuda li-bašarin ḫalaqtahū min ṣalṣālin min ḥamaˈin masnūnin

    Said he, ‘I will not prostrate before a human whom You have created out of a dry clay [drawn] from an aging mud.’

34. 15:34

    قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ﴿٣٤﴾

    qāla fa-ḫruǧ minhā fa-ˈinnaka raǧīmun

    He said, ‘Begone hence, for you are indeed an outcast,

35. 15:35

    وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ ٱللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ﴿٣٥﴾

    wa-ˈinna ʿalayka l-laʿnata ˈilā yawmi d-dīni

    and indeed the curse shall lie on you until the Day of Retribution.’

36. 15:36

    قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ﴿٣٦﴾

    qāla rabbi fa-ˈanẓirnī ˈilā yawmi yubʿaṯūna

    He said, ‘My Lord! Respite me till the day they will be resurrected.’

37. 15:37

    قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ﴿٣٧﴾

    qāla fa-ˈinnaka mina l-munẓarīna

    Said He, ‘You are indeed among the reprieved

38. 15:38

    إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْوَقْتِ ٱلْمَعْلُومِ﴿٣٨﴾

    ˈilā yawmi l-waqti l-maʿlūmi

    until the day of the known time.’

39. 15:39

    قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَآ أَغْوَيْتَنِى لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ﴿٣٩﴾

    qāla rabbi bi-mā ˈaġwaytanī la-ˈuzayyinanna lahum fī l-ˈarḍi wa-la-ˈuġwiyannahum ˈaǧmaʿīna

    He said, ‘My Lord! As You have consigned me to perversity, I will surely glamorize [evil] for them on the earth, and I will surely pervert them, all

40. 15:40

    إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ﴿٤٠﴾

    ˈillā ʿibādaka minhumu l-muḫlaṣīna

    except Your dedicated servants among them.’

41. 15:41

    قَالَ هَـٰذَا صِرَٰطٌ عَلَىَّ مُسْتَقِيمٌ﴿٤١﴾

    qāla hāḏā ṣirāṭun ʿalayya mustaqīmun

    He said, ‘This is the path [leading] straight to Me.

42. 15:42

    إِنَّ عِبَادِى لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَـٰنٌ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلْغَاوِينَ﴿٤٢﴾

    ˈinna ʿibādī laysa laka ʿalayhim sulṭānun ˈillā mani ttabaʿaka mina l-ġāwīna

    Indeed, as for My servants you do not have any authority over them, except the perverse who follow you,

43. 15:43

    وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ﴿٤٣﴾

    wa-ˈinna ǧahannama la-mawʿiduhum ˈaǧmaʿīna

    and indeed hell is the tryst of them all.

44. 15:44

    لَهَا سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَٰبٍ لِّكُلِّ بَابٍ مِّنْهُمْ جُزْءٌ مَّقْسُومٌ﴿٤٤﴾

    lahā sabʿatu ˈabwābin li-kulli bābin minhum ǧuzˈun maqsūmun

    It has seven gates, and to each gate belongs a separate portion of them.’

45. 15:45

    إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ﴿٤٥﴾

    ˈinna l-muttaqīna fī ǧannātin wa-ʿuyūnin-i

    Indeed the Godwary will be amid gardens and springs.

46. 15:46

    ٱدْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَـٰمٍ ءَامِنِينَ﴿٤٦﴾

    udḫulūhā bi-salāmin ˈāminīna

    ‘‘Enter it in peace and safety!’’

47. 15:47

    وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِى صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَٰنًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَ﴿٤٧﴾

    wa-nazaʿnā mā fī ṣudūrihim min ġillin ˈiḫwānan ʿalā sururin mutaqābilīna

    We will remove whatever rancour there is in their breasts; [intimate like] brothers, [they will be reclining] on couches, facing one another.

48. 15:48

    لَا يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيهَا نَصَبٌ وَمَا هُم مِّنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِينَ﴿٤٨﴾

    lā yamassuhum fīhā naṣabun wa-mā hum minhā bi-muḫraǧīna

    Therein neither weariness shall touch them, nor will they [ever] be expelled from it.

49. 15:49

    نَبِّئْ عِبَادِىٓ أَنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ﴿٤٩﴾

    nabbiˈ ʿibādī ˈannī ˈana l-ġafūru r-raḥīmu

    Inform my servants that I am indeed the All-forgiving, the All-merciful,

50. 15:50

    وَأَنَّ عَذَابِى هُوَ ٱلْعَذَابُ ٱلْأَلِيمُ﴿٥٠﴾

    wa-ˈanna ʿaḏābī huwa l-ʿaḏābu l-ˈalīmu

    and that My punishment is a painful punishment.

51. 15:51

    وَنَبِّئْهُمْ عَن ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ﴿٥١﴾

    wa-nabbiˈhum ʿan ḍayfi ˈibrāhīma

    And inform them about the guests of Abraham,

52. 15:52

    إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمًا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمْ وَجِلُونَ﴿٥٢﴾

    ˈiḏ daḫalū ʿalayhi fa-qālū salāman qāla ˈinnā minkum waǧilūna

    when they entered into his presence and said, ‘Peace!’ He said, ‘We are indeed afraid of you.’

53. 15:53

    قَالُوا۟ لَا تَوْجَلْ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَـٰمٍ عَلِيمٍ﴿٥٣﴾

    qālū lā tawǧal ˈinnā nubašširuka bi-ġulāmin ʿalīmin

    They said, ‘Do not be afraid. Indeed we give you the good news of a wise son.’

54. 15:54

    قَالَ أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِى عَلَىٰٓ أَن مَّسَّنِىَ ٱلْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ﴿٥٤﴾

    qāla ˈa-baššartumūnī ʿalā ˈan massaniya l-kibaru fa-bi-ma tubašširūna

    He said, ‘Do you give me good news though old age has befallen me? What is the good news that you bring me?’

55. 15:55

    قَالُوا۟ بَشَّرْنَـٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْقَـٰنِطِينَ﴿٥٥﴾

    qālū baššarnāka bi-l-ḥaqqi fa-lā takun mina l-qāniṭīna

    They said, ‘We bring you good news in truth; so do not be despondent.’

56. 15:56

    قَالَ وَمَن يَقْنَطُ مِن رَّحْمَةِ رَبِّهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ﴿٥٦﴾

    qāla wa-man yaqnaṭu min raḥmati rabbihī ˈillā ḍ-ḍāllūna

    He said, ‘Who despairs of his Lord’s mercy except the astray?!’

57. 15:57

    قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ﴿٥٧﴾

    qāla fa-mā ḫaṭbukum ˈayyuhā l-mursalūna

    He said, ‘O messengers, what is now your errand?’

58. 15:58

    قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِينَ﴿٥٨﴾

    qālū ˈinnā ˈursilnā ˈilā qawmin muǧrimīna

    They said, ‘We have been sent toward a guilty people,

59. 15:59

    إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ﴿٥٩﴾

    ˈillā ˈāla lūṭin ˈinnā la-munaǧǧūhum ˈaǧmaʿīna

    [who shall perish] except the family of Lot. We will indeed deliver all of them,

60. 15:60

    إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرْنَآ ۙ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ﴿٦٠﴾

    ˈillā mraˈatahū qaddarnā ˈinnahā la-mina l-ġābirīna

    except his wife, [who], We have ordained, will indeed be among those who remain behind.’

61. 15:61

    فَلَمَّا جَآءَ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ﴿٦١﴾

    fa-lammā ǧāˈa ˈāla lūṭin-i l-mursalūna

    So when the messengers came to Lot’s family,

62. 15:62

    قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَ﴿٦٢﴾

    qāla ˈinnakum qawmun munkarūna

    he said, ‘You are indeed strangers [to me].’

63. 15:63

    قَالُوا۟ بَلْ جِئْنَـٰكَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ﴿٦٣﴾

    qālū bal ǧiˈnāka bi-mā kānū fīhi yamtarūna

    They said, ‘Indeed, we bring you what they used to doubt.

64. 15:64

    وَأَتَيْنَـٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَـٰدِقُونَ﴿٦٤﴾

    wa-ˈataynāka bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-ˈinnā la-ṣādiqūna

    We bring you the truth, and indeed, we speak truly.

65. 15:65

    فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱتَّبِعْ أَدْبَـٰرَهُمْ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنكُمْ أَحَدٌ وَٱمْضُوا۟ حَيْثُ تُؤْمَرُونَ﴿٦٥﴾

    fa-ˈasri bi-ˈahlika bi-qiṭʿin mina l-layli wa-ttabiʿ ˈadbārahum wa-lā yaltafit minkum ˈaḥadun wa-mḍū ḥayṯu tuˈmarūna

    Take your family in a watch of the night; and follow in their rear, and none of you should turn round, and proceed as you are bidden.’

66. 15:66

    وَقَضَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْأَمْرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ مَقْطُوعٌ مُّصْبِحِينَ﴿٦٦﴾

    wa-qaḍaynā ˈilayhi ḏālika l-ˈamra ˈanna dābira hāˈulāˈi maqṭūʿun muṣbiḥīna

    We apprised him of the matter that these will be rooted out by dawn.

67. 15:67

    وَجَآءَ أَهْلُ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ﴿٦٧﴾

    wa-ǧāˈa ˈahlu l-madīnati yastabširūna

    The people of the city came, rejoicing.

68. 15:68

    قَالَ إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ ضَيْفِى فَلَا تَفْضَحُونِ﴿٦٨﴾

    qāla ˈinna hāˈulāˈi ḍayfī fa-lā tafḍaḥūni

    He said, ‘These are indeed my guests. Do not bring dishonour on me.

69. 15:69

    وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُخْزُونِ﴿٦٩﴾

    wa-ttaqū llāha wa-lā tuḫzūni

    Be wary of Allah and do not humiliate me.’

70. 15:70

    قَالُوٓا۟ أَوَلَمْ نَنْهَكَ عَنِ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ﴿٧٠﴾

    qālū ˈa-wa-lam nanhaka ʿani l-ʿālamīna

    They said, ‘Did we not forbid you from [defending ] strangers?’

71. 15:71

    قَالَ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ بَنَاتِىٓ إِن كُنتُمْ فَـٰعِلِينَ﴿٧١﴾

    qāla hāˈulāˈi banātī ˈin kuntum fāʿilīna

    He said, ‘These are my daughters, [marry them] if you should do anything.’

72. 15:72

    لَعَمْرُكَ إِنَّهُمْ لَفِى سَكْرَتِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ﴿٧٢﴾

    la-ʿamruka ˈinnahum la-fī sakratihim yaʿmahūna

    By your life, they were bewildered in their drunkenness.

73. 15:73

    فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِينَ﴿٧٣﴾

    fa-ˈaḫaḏathumu ṣ-ṣayḥatu mušriqīna

    So the Cry seized them at sunrise,

74. 15:74

    فَجَعَلْنَا عَـٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّن سِجِّيلٍ﴿٧٤﴾

    fa-ǧaʿalnā ʿāliyahā sāfilahā wa-ˈamṭarnā ʿalayhim ḥiǧāratan min siǧǧīlin

    and We made its topmost part its nethermost, and rained on them stones of shale.

75. 15:75

    إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَـٰتٍ لِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ﴿٧٥﴾

    ˈinna fī ḏālika la-ˈāyātin li-l-mutawassimīna

    There are indeed signs in that for the percipient.

76. 15:76

    وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِيلٍ مُّقِيمٍ﴿٧٦﴾

    wa-ˈinnahā la-bi-sabīlin muqīmin

    Indeed it is on a standing road,

77. 15:77

    إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ﴿٧٧﴾

    ˈinna fī ḏālika la-ˈāyatan li-l-muˈminīna

    and there is indeed a sign in that for the faithful.

78. 15:78

    وَإِن كَانَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْأَيْكَةِ لَظَـٰلِمِينَ﴿٧٨﴾

    wa-ˈin kāna ˈaṣḥābu l-ˈaykati la-ẓālimīna

    Indeed the inhabitants of Aykah were [also] wrongdoers.

79. 15:79

    فَٱنتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامٍ مُّبِينٍ﴿٧٩﴾

    fa-ntaqamnā minhum wa-ˈinnahumā la-bi-ˈimāmin mubīnin

    So We took vengeance on them, and indeed the two of them are on an open highway.

80. 15:80

    وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْحِجْرِ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ﴿٨٠﴾

    wa-la-qad kaḏḏaba ˈaṣḥābu l-ḥiǧri l-mursalīna

    Certainly the inhabitants of Hijr denied the apostles.

81. 15:81

    وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمْ ءَايَـٰتِنَا فَكَانُوا۟ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ﴿٨١﴾

    wa-ˈātaynāhum ˈāyātinā fa-kānū ʿanhā muʿriḍīna

    We had given them Our signs but they disregarded them.

82. 15:82

    وَكَانُوا۟ يَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا ءَامِنِينَ﴿٨٢﴾

    wa-kānū yanḥitūna mina l-ǧibāli buyūtan ˈāminīna

    They used to hew out dwellings from mountains feeling secure.

83. 15:83

    فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُصْبِحِينَ﴿٨٣﴾

    fa-ˈaḫaḏathumu ṣ-ṣayḥatu muṣbiḥīna

    So the Cry seized them at dawn,

84. 15:84

    فَمَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ﴿٨٤﴾

    fa-mā ˈaġnā ʿanhum mā kānū yaksibūna

    and what they used to earn did not avail them.

85. 15:85

    وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَـَٔاتِيَةٌ ۖ فَٱصْفَحِ ٱلصَّفْحَ ٱلْجَمِيلَ﴿٨٥﴾

    wa-mā ḫalaqnā s-samāwāti wa-l-ˈarḍa wa-mā baynahumā ˈillā bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-ˈinna s-sāʿata la-ˈātiyatun fa-ṣfaḥi ṣ-ṣafḥa l-ǧamīla

    We did not create the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them except with consummate wisdom, and indeed the Hour is bound to come. So forbear with a graceful forbearance.

86. 15:86

    إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلْخَلَّـٰقُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ﴿٨٦﴾

    ˈinna rabbaka huwa l-ḫallāqu l-ʿalīmu

    Indeed your Lord is the All-creator, the All-knowing.

87. 15:87

    وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَـٰكَ سَبْعًا مِّنَ ٱلْمَثَانِى وَٱلْقُرْءَانَ ٱلْعَظِيمَ﴿٨٧﴾

    wa-la-qad ˈātaynāka sabʿan mina l-maṯānī wa-l-qurˈāna l-ʿaẓīma

    Certainly We have given you [the surah of] the seven oft-repeated verses and the great Quran.

88. 15:88

    لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزْوَٰجًا مِّنْهُمْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَٱخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ﴿٨٨﴾

    lā tamuddanna ʿaynayka ˈilā mā mattaʿnā bihī ˈazwāǧan minhum wa-lā taḥzan ʿalayhim wa-ḫfiḍ ǧanāḥaka li-l-muˈminīna

    Do not extend your glance toward what We have provided to certain groups of them, and do not grieve for them, and lower your wing to the faithful,

89. 15:89

    وَقُلْ إِنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلنَّذِيرُ ٱلْمُبِينُ﴿٨٩﴾

    wa-qul ˈinnī ˈana n-naḏīru l-mubīnu

    and say, ‘I am indeed a manifest warner [of punishment from God],’

90. 15:90

    كَمَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَى ٱلْمُقْتَسِمِينَ﴿٩٠﴾

    ka-mā ˈanzalnā ʿalā l-muqtasimīna

    like that We sent down upon those who split into bands,

91. 15:91

    ٱلَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا۟ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ عِضِينَ﴿٩١﴾

    allaḏīna ǧaʿalū l-qurʿāna ʿiḍīna

    who represented the Quran as magic.

92. 15:92

    فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْـَٔلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ﴿٩٢﴾

    fa-wa-rabbika la-nasˈalannahum ˈaǧmaʿīna

    By your Lord, We will question them all

93. 15:93

    عَمَّا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ﴿٩٣﴾

    ʿammā kānū yaʿmalūna

    concerning what they used to do.

94. 15:94

    فَٱصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَرُ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ﴿٩٤﴾

    fa-ṣdaʿ bi-mā tuˈmaru wa-ˈaʿriḍ ʿani l-mušrikīna

    So proclaim what you have been commanded, and turn away from the polytheists.

95. 15:95

    إِنَّا كَفَيْنَـٰكَ ٱلْمُسْتَهْزِءِينَ﴿٩٥﴾

    ˈinnā kafaynāka l-mustahziˈīna

    Indeed We will suffice you against the deriders

96. 15:96

    ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْعَلُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ ۚ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ﴿٩٦﴾

    allaḏīna yaǧʿalūna maʿa llāhi ˈilāhan ˈāḫara fa-sawfa yaʿlamūna

    —those who set up another deity besides Allah. Soon they will know!

97. 15:97

    وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ﴿٩٧﴾

    wa-la-qad naʿlamu ˈannaka yaḍīqu ṣadruka bi-mā yaqūlūna

    Certainly We know that you become upset because of what they say.

98. 15:98

    فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ﴿٩٨﴾

    fa-sabbiḥ bi-ḥamdi rabbika wa-kun mina s-sāǧidīna

    So celebrate the praise of your Lord and be among those who prostrate,

99. 15:99

    وَٱعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ﴿٩٩﴾

    wa-ʿbud rabbaka ḥattā yaˈtiyaka l-yaqīnu

    and worship your Lord until certainty comes to you.
