Surah 19
سُورَةُ مَرۡيَمَ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
كٓهيعٓصٓ
k-h-y-ʿ-ṣ (kāf hā yā ʿayn ṣād)
Kaf, Ha, Ya, ‘Ayn, Suad.
ذِكْرُ رَحْمَتِ رَبِّكَ عَبْدَهُۥ زَكَرِيَّآ
ḏikru raḥmati rabbika ʿabdahū zakariyyā
[This is] an account of your Lord’s mercy on His servant, Zechariah,
إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥ نِدَآءً خَفِيًّا
ˈiḏ nādā rabbahū nidāˈan ḫafiyyan
when he called out to his Lord with a secret cry.
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى وَهَنَ ٱلْعَظْمُ مِنِّى وَٱشْتَعَلَ ٱلرَّأْسُ شَيْبًا وَلَمْ أَكُنۢ بِدُعَآئِكَ رَبِّ شَقِيًّا
qāla rabbi ˈinnī wahana l-ʿaẓmu minnī wa-štaʿala r-raˈsu šayban wa-lam ˈakun bi-duʿāˈika rabbi šaqiyyan
He said, ‘My Lord! Indeed my bones have become feeble, and my head has turned white with age, yet never have I, my Lord, been disappointed in supplicating You!
وَإِنِّى خِفْتُ ٱلْمَوَٰلِىَ مِن وَرَآءِى وَكَانَتِ ٱمْرَأَتِى عَاقِرًا فَهَبْ لِى مِن لَّدُنكَ وَلِيًّا
wa-ˈinnī ḫiftu l-mawāliya min warāˈī wa-kānati mraˈatī ʿāqiran fa-hab lī min ladunka waliyyan
Indeed I fear my kinsmen, after me, and my wife is barren. So grant me from Yourself an heir
يَرِثُنِى وَيَرِثُ مِنْ ءَالِ يَعْقُوبَ ۖ وَٱجْعَلْهُ رَبِّ رَضِيًّا
yariṯunī wa-yariṯu min ˈāli yaʿqūba wa-ǧʿalhu rabbi raḍiyyan
who may inherit from me and inherit from the House of Jacob, and make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You]!’
يَـٰزَكَرِيَّآ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَـٰمٍ ٱسْمُهُۥ يَحْيَىٰ لَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ مِن قَبْلُ سَمِيًّا
yā-zakariyyā ˈinnā nubašširuka bi-ġulāmin-i smuhū yaḥyā lam naǧʿal lahū min qablu samiyyan
‘O Zechariah! Indeed We give you the good news of a son, whose name is ‘‘John.’’ Never before have We made anyone his namesake.’
قَالَ رَبِّ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِى غُلَـٰمٌ وَكَانَتِ ٱمْرَأَتِى عَاقِرًا وَقَدْ بَلَغْتُ مِنَ ٱلْكِبَرِ عِتِيًّا
qāla rabbi ˈannā yakūnu lī ġulāmun wa-kānati mraˈatī ʿāqiran wa-qad balaġtu mina l-kibari ʿitiyyan
He said, ‘My Lord! How shall I have a son, when my wife is barren, and I am already advanced in age?’
قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ قَالَ رَبُّكَ هُوَ عَلَىَّ هَيِّنٌ وَقَدْ خَلَقْتُكَ مِن قَبْلُ وَلَمْ تَكُ شَيْـًٔا
qāla ka-ḏālika qāla rabbuka huwa ʿalayya hayyinun wa-qad ḫalaqtuka min qablu wa-lam taku šayˈan
He said, ‘So shall it be. Your Lord has said, ‘‘It is simple for Me.’’ Certainly I created you before when you were nothing.’
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱجْعَل لِّىٓ ءَايَةً ۚ قَالَ ءَايَتُكَ أَلَّا تُكَلِّمَ ٱلنَّاسَ ثَلَـٰثَ لَيَالٍ سَوِيًّا
qāla rabbi ǧʿal lī ˈāyatan qāla ˈāyatuka ˈallā tukallima n-nāsa ṯalāṯa layālin sawiyyan
He said, ‘My Lord! Appoint a sign for me.’ He said, ‘Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three complete nights.’
فَخَرَجَ عَلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦ مِنَ ٱلْمِحْرَابِ فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَيْهِمْ أَن سَبِّحُوا۟ بُكْرَةً وَعَشِيًّا
fa-ḫaraǧa ʿalā qawmihī mina l-miḥrābi fa-ˈawḥā ˈilayhim ˈan sabbiḥū bukratan wa-ʿašiyyan
So he emerged before his people from the Temple, and signalled to them that they should glorify [Allah] morning and evening.
يَـٰيَحْيَىٰ خُذِ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ بِقُوَّةٍ ۖ وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلْحُكْمَ صَبِيًّا
yā-yaḥyā ḫuḏi l-kitāba bi-quwwatin wa-ˈātaynāhu l-ḥukma ṣabiyyan
‘O John!’ [We said,] ‘Hold on with power to the Book!’ And We gave him judgement while still a child,
وَحَنَانًا مِّن لَّدُنَّا وَزَكَوٰةً ۖ وَكَانَ تَقِيًّا
wa-ḥanānan min ladunnā wa-zakātan wa-kāna taqiyyan
and a compassion and purity from Us. He was Godwary
وَبَرًّۢا بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ وَلَمْ يَكُن جَبَّارًا عَصِيًّا
wa-barran bi-wālidayhi wa-lam yakun ǧabbāran ʿaṣiyyan
and good to his parents, and was not self-willed or disobedient.
وَسَلَـٰمٌ عَلَيْهِ يَوْمَ وُلِدَ وَيَوْمَ يَمُوتُ وَيَوْمَ يُبْعَثُ حَيًّا
wa-salāmun ʿalayhi yawma wulida wa-yawma yamūtu wa-yawma yubʿaṯu ḥayyan
Peace be to him, the day he was born, and the day he dies, and the day he is raised alive!
وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ مَرْيَمَ إِذِ ٱنتَبَذَتْ مِنْ أَهْلِهَا مَكَانًا شَرْقِيًّا
wa-ḏkur fī l-kitābi maryama ˈiḏi ntabaḏat min ˈahlihā makānan šarqiyyan
And mention in the Book Mary, when she withdrew from her family to an easterly place.
فَٱتَّخَذَتْ مِن دُونِهِمْ حِجَابًا فَأَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَيْهَا رُوحَنَا فَتَمَثَّلَ لَهَا بَشَرًا سَوِيًّا
fa-ttaḫaḏat min dūnihim ḥiǧāban fa-ˈarsalnā ˈilayhā rūḥanā fa-tamaṯṯala lahā bašaran sawiyyan
Thus did she seclude herself from them, whereupon We sent to her Our Spirit and he became incarnate for her as a well-proportioned human.
قَالَتْ إِنِّىٓ أَعُوذُ بِٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ مِنكَ إِن كُنتَ تَقِيًّا
qālat ˈinnī ˈaʿūḏu bi-r-raḥmāni minka ˈin kunta taqiyyan
She said, ‘I seek the protection of the All-beneficent from you, should you be Godwary!’
قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ رَسُولُ رَبِّكِ لِأَهَبَ لَكِ غُلَـٰمًا زَكِيًّا
qāla ˈinnamā ˈana rasūlu rabbiki li-ˈahaba laki ġulāman zakiyyan
He said, ‘I am only a messenger of your Lord that I may give you a pure son.’
قَالَتْ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِى غُلَـٰمٌ وَلَمْ يَمْسَسْنِى بَشَرٌ وَلَمْ أَكُ بَغِيًّا
qālat ˈannā yakūnu lī ġulāmun wa-lam yamsasnī bašarun wa-lam ˈaku baġiyyan
She said, ‘How shall I have a child seeing that no human being has ever touched me, nor have I been unchaste?’
قَالَ كَذَٰلِكِ قَالَ رَبُّكِ هُوَ عَلَىَّ هَيِّنٌ ۖ وَلِنَجْعَلَهُۥٓ ءَايَةً لِّلنَّاسِ وَرَحْمَةً مِّنَّا ۚ وَكَانَ أَمْرًا مَّقْضِيًّا
qāla ka-ḏāliki qāla rabbuki huwa ʿalayya hayyinun wa-li-naǧʿalahū ˈāyatan li-n-nāsi wa-raḥmatan minnā wa-kāna ˈamran maqḍiyyan
He said, ‘So shall it be. Your Lord says, ‘‘It is simple for Me.’’ And so that We may make him a sign for mankind and a mercy from Us, and it is a matter [already] decided.’
فَحَمَلَتْهُ فَٱنتَبَذَتْ بِهِۦ مَكَانًا قَصِيًّا
fa-ḥamalathu fa-ntabaḏat bihī makānan qaṣiyyan
Thus she conceived him, then withdrew with him to a distant place.
فَأَجَآءَهَا ٱلْمَخَاضُ إِلَىٰ جِذْعِ ٱلنَّخْلَةِ قَالَتْ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى مِتُّ قَبْلَ هَـٰذَا وَكُنتُ نَسْيًا مَّنسِيًّا
fa-ˈaǧāˈahā l-maḫāḍu ˈilā ǧiḏʿi n-naḫlati qālat yā-laytanī mittu qabla hāḏā wa-kuntu nasyan mansiyyan
The birth pangs brought her to the trunk of a date palm. She said, ‘I wish I had died before this and become a forgotten thing, beyond recall.’
فَنَادَىٰهَا مِن تَحْتِهَآ أَلَّا تَحْزَنِى قَدْ جَعَلَ رَبُّكِ تَحْتَكِ سَرِيًّا
fa-nādāhā min taḥtihā ˈallā taḥzanī qad ǧaʿala rabbuki taḥtaki sariyyan
Thereupon he called her from below her [saying,] ‘Do not grieve! Your Lord has made a spring to flow at your feet.
وَهُزِّىٓ إِلَيْكِ بِجِذْعِ ٱلنَّخْلَةِ تُسَـٰقِطْ عَلَيْكِ رُطَبًا جَنِيًّا
wa-huzzī ˈilayki bi-ǧiḏʿi n-naḫlati tusāqiṭ ʿalayki ruṭaban ǧaniyyan
Shake the trunk of the palm tree, freshly picked dates will drop upon you.
فَكُلِى وَٱشْرَبِى وَقَرِّى عَيْنًا ۖ فَإِمَّا تَرَيِنَّ مِنَ ٱلْبَشَرِ أَحَدًا فَقُولِىٓ إِنِّى نَذَرْتُ لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ صَوْمًا فَلَنْ أُكَلِّمَ ٱلْيَوْمَ إِنسِيًّا
fa-kulī wa-šrabī wa-qarrī ʿaynan fa-ˈimmā tarayinna mina l-bašari ˈaḥadan fa-qūlī ˈinnī naḏartu li-r-raḥmāni ṣawman fa-lan ˈukallima l-yawma ˈinsiyyan
Eat, drink, and be comforted. Then if you see any human, say, ‘‘Indeed I have vowed a fast to the All-beneficent, so I will not speak to any human today.’’ ’
فَأَتَتْ بِهِۦ قَوْمَهَا تَحْمِلُهُۥ ۖ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰمَرْيَمُ لَقَدْ جِئْتِ شَيْـًٔا فَرِيًّا
fa-ˈatat bihī qawmahā taḥmiluhū qālū yā-maryamu la-qad ǧiˈti šayˈan fariyyan
Then carrying him she brought him to her people. They said, ‘O Mary, you have certainly come up with an odd thing!
يَـٰٓأُخْتَ هَـٰرُونَ مَا كَانَ أَبُوكِ ٱمْرَأَ سَوْءٍ وَمَا كَانَتْ أُمُّكِ بَغِيًّا
yā-ˈuḫta hārūna mā kāna ˈabūki mraˈa sawˈin wa-mā kānat ˈummuki baġiyyan
O sister of Aaron[’s lineage]! Your father was not an evil man, nor was your mother unchaste.’
فَأَشَارَتْ إِلَيْهِ ۖ قَالُوا۟ كَيْفَ نُكَلِّمُ مَن كَانَ فِى ٱلْمَهْدِ صَبِيًّا
fa-ˈašārat ˈilayhi qālū kayfa nukallimu man kāna fī l-mahdi ṣabiyyan
Thereat she pointed to him. They said, ‘How can we speak to one who is yet a baby in the cradle?’
قَالَ إِنِّى عَبْدُ ٱللَّهِ ءَاتَىٰنِىَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَجَعَلَنِى نَبِيًّا
qāla ˈinnī ʿabdu llāhi ˈātāniya l-kitāba wa-ǧaʿalanī nabiyyan
He said, ‘Indeed I am a servant of Allah! He has given me the Book and made me a prophet.
وَجَعَلَنِى مُبَارَكًا أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُ وَأَوْصَـٰنِى بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَٱلزَّكَوٰةِ مَا دُمْتُ حَيًّا
wa-ǧaʿalanī mubārakan ˈayna mā kuntu wa-ˈawṣānī bi-ṣ-ṣalāti wa-z-zakāti mā dumtu ḥayyan
He has made me blessed, wherever I may be, and He has enjoined me to [maintain] the prayer and to [pay] the zakat as long as I live,
وَبَرًّۢا بِوَٰلِدَتِى وَلَمْ يَجْعَلْنِى جَبَّارًا شَقِيًّا
wa-barran bi-wālidatī wa-lam yaǧʿalnī ǧabbāran šaqiyyan
and to be good to my mother, and He has not made me self-willed and wretched.
وَٱلسَّلَـٰمُ عَلَىَّ يَوْمَ وُلِدتُّ وَيَوْمَ أَمُوتُ وَيَوْمَ أُبْعَثُ حَيًّا
wa-s-salāmu ʿalayya yawma wulidtu wa-yawma ˈamūtu wa-yawma ˈubʿaṯu ḥayyan
Peace to me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I am raised alive.’
ذَٰلِكَ عِيسَى ٱبْنُ مَرْيَمَ ۚ قَوْلَ ٱلْحَقِّ ٱلَّذِى فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ
ḏālika ʿīsā bnu maryama qawla l-ḥaqqi llaḏī fīhi yamtarūna
That is Jesus, son of Mary, a Word of the Real concerning whom they are in doubt.
مَا كَانَ لِلَّهِ أَن يَتَّخِذَ مِن وَلَدٍ ۖ سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥٓ ۚ إِذَا قَضَىٰٓ أَمْرًا فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ
mā kāna li-llāhi ˈan yattaḫiḏa min waladin subḥānahū ˈiḏā qaḍā ˈamran fa-ˈinnamā yaqūlu lahū kun fa-yakūnu
It is not for Allah to take a son. Immaculate is He! When He decides on a matter, He just says to it, ‘Be!’ and it is.
وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ رَبِّى وَرَبُّكُمْ فَٱعْبُدُوهُ ۚ هَـٰذَا صِرَٰطٌ مُّسْتَقِيمٌ
wa-ˈinna llāha rabbī wa-rabbukum fa-ʿbudūhu hāḏā ṣirāṭun mustaqīmun
[And Jesus said,] ‘Indeed Allah is my Lord and your Lord. So worship Him. This is a straight path.’
فَٱخْتَلَفَ ٱلْأَحْزَابُ مِنۢ بَيْنِهِمْ ۖ فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن مَّشْهَدِ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
fa-ḫtalafa l-ˈaḥzābu min baynihim fa-waylun li-llaḏīna kafarū min mašhadi yawmin ʿaẓīmin
But the factions differed among themselves. So woe to the faithless at the scene of a tremendous day.
أَسْمِعْ بِهِمْ وَأَبْصِرْ يَوْمَ يَأْتُونَنَا ۖ لَـٰكِنِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ٱلْيَوْمَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍ مُّبِينٍ
ˈasmiʿ bihim wa-ˈabṣir yawma yaˈtūnanā lākini ẓ-ẓālimūna l-yawma fī ḍalālin mubīnin
How well they will hear and how well they will see on the day when they come to Us! But today the wrongdoers are in manifest error.
وَأَنذِرْهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْحَسْرَةِ إِذْ قُضِىَ ٱلْأَمْرُ وَهُمْ فِى غَفْلَةٍ وَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
wa-ˈanḏirhum yawma l-ḥasrati ˈiḏ quḍiya l-ˈamru wa-hum fī ġaflatin wa-hum lā yuˈminūna
Warn them of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be decided, while they are [yet] heedless and do not have faith.
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَرِثُ ٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَنْ عَلَيْهَا وَإِلَيْنَا يُرْجَعُونَ
ˈinnā naḥnu nariṯu l-ˈarḍa wa-man ʿalayhā wa-ˈilaynā yurǧaʿūna
Indeed We shall inherit the earth and whoever there is on it, and to Us they shall be brought back.
وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ صِدِّيقًا نَّبِيًّا
wa-ḏkur fī l-kitābi ˈibrāhīma ˈinnahū kāna ṣiddīqan nabiyyan
And mention in the Book Abraham. Indeed, he was a truthful man and a prophet.
إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ يَـٰٓأَبَتِ لِمَ تَعْبُدُ مَا لَا يَسْمَعُ وَلَا يُبْصِرُ وَلَا يُغْنِى عَنكَ شَيْـًٔا
ˈiḏ qāla li-ˈabīhi yā-ˈabati li-ma taʿbudu mā lā yasmaʿu wa-lā yubṣiru wa-lā yuġnī ʿanka šayˈan
When he said to his father, ‘Father! Why do you worship that which neither hears nor sees, and is of no avail to you in any way?
يَـٰٓأَبَتِ إِنِّى قَدْ جَآءَنِى مِنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ مَا لَمْ يَأْتِكَ فَٱتَّبِعْنِىٓ أَهْدِكَ صِرَٰطًا سَوِيًّا
yā-ˈabati ˈinnī qad ǧāˈanī mina l-ʿilmi mā lam yaˈtika fa-ttabiʿnī ˈahdika ṣirāṭan sawiyyan
Father! Indeed a knowledge has already come to me, which has not come to you. So follow me that I may guide you to a right path.
يَـٰٓأَبَتِ لَا تَعْبُدِ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ ۖ إِنَّ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ كَانَ لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ عَصِيًّا
yā-ˈabati lā taʿbudi š-šayṭāna ˈinna š-šayṭāna kāna li-r-raḥmāni ʿaṣiyyan
Father! Do not worship Satan. Indeed Satan is disobedient to the All-beneficent.
يَـٰٓأَبَتِ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ أَن يَمَسَّكَ عَذَابٌ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ فَتَكُونَ لِلشَّيْطَـٰنِ وَلِيًّا
yā-ˈabati ˈinnī ˈaḫāfu ˈan yamassaka ʿaḏābun mina r-raḥmāni fa-takūna li-š-šayṭāni waliyyan
Father! I am indeed afraid that a punishment from the All-beneficent will befall you, and you will become Satan’s accomplice.’
قَالَ أَرَاغِبٌ أَنتَ عَنْ ءَالِهَتِى يَـٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ ۖ لَئِن لَّمْ تَنتَهِ لَأَرْجُمَنَّكَ ۖ وَٱهْجُرْنِى مَلِيًّا
qāla ˈa-rāġibun ˈanta ʿan ˈālihatī yā-ˈibrāhīmu la-ˈin lam tantahi la-ˈarǧumannaka wa-hǧurnī maliyyan
He said, ‘Abraham! Are you renouncing my gods? If you do not desist, I will stone you. Get away from me for a long while.’
قَالَ سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَيْكَ ۖ سَأَسْتَغْفِرُ لَكَ رَبِّىٓ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ بِى حَفِيًّا
qāla salāmun ʿalayka sa-ˈastaġfiru laka rabbī ˈinnahū kāna bī ḥafiyyan
He said, ‘Peace be to you! I shall plead with my Lord to forgive you. Indeed, He is gracious to me.
وَأَعْتَزِلُكُمْ وَمَا تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَأَدْعُوا۟ رَبِّى عَسَىٰٓ أَلَّآ أَكُونَ بِدُعَآءِ رَبِّى شَقِيًّا
wa-ˈaʿtazilukum wa-mā tadʿūna min dūni llāhi wa-ˈadʿū rabbī ʿasā ˈallā ˈakūna bi-duʿāˈi rabbī šaqiyyan
I dissociate myself from you and whatever you invoke besides Allah. I will supplicate my Lord. Hopefully, I will not be disappointed in supplicating my Lord.’
فَلَمَّا ٱعْتَزَلَهُمْ وَمَا يَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَهَبْنَا لَهُۥٓ إِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ ۖ وَكُلًّا جَعَلْنَا نَبِيًّا
fa-lammā ʿtazalahum wa-mā yaʿbudūna min dūni llāhi wahabnā lahū ˈisḥāqa wa-yaʿqūba wa-kullan ǧaʿalnā nabiyyan
So when he had left them and what they worshipped besides Allah, We gave him Isaac and Jacob, and each We made a prophet.
وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُم مِّن رَّحْمَتِنَا وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُمْ لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ عَلِيًّا
wa-wahabnā lahum min raḥmatinā wa-ǧaʿalnā lahum lisāna ṣidqin ʿaliyyan
And We gave them out of Our mercy, and conferred on them a worthy and lofty repute.
وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ مُوسَىٰٓ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مُخْلَصًا وَكَانَ رَسُولًا نَّبِيًّا
wa-ḏkur fī l-kitābi mūsā ˈinnahū kāna muḫlaṣan wa-kāna rasūlan nabiyyan
And mention in the Book Moses. Indeed he was exclusively dedicated [to Allah], and an apostle and prophet.
وَنَـٰدَيْنَـٰهُ مِن جَانِبِ ٱلطُّورِ ٱلْأَيْمَنِ وَقَرَّبْنَـٰهُ نَجِيًّا
wa-nādaynāhu min ǧānibi ṭ-ṭūri l-ˈaymani wa-qarrabnāhu naǧiyyan
We called him from the right side of the Mount and We drew him near [to Ourselves] for confidential discourse.
وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥ مِن رَّحْمَتِنَآ أَخَاهُ هَـٰرُونَ نَبِيًّا
wa-wahabnā lahū min raḥmatinā ˈaḫāhu hārūna nabiyyan
And We gave him out of Our mercy his brother Aaron, a prophet.
وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ إِسْمَـٰعِيلَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ صَادِقَ ٱلْوَعْدِ وَكَانَ رَسُولًا نَّبِيًّا
wa-ḏkur fī l-kitābi ˈismāʿīla ˈinnahū kāna ṣādiqa l-waʿdi wa-kāna rasūlan nabiyyan
And mention in the Book Ishmael. Indeed, he was true to his promise, and an apostle and prophet.
وَكَانَ يَأْمُرُ أَهْلَهُۥ بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَٱلزَّكَوٰةِ وَكَانَ عِندَ رَبِّهِۦ مَرْضِيًّا
wa-kāna yaˈmuru ˈahlahū bi-ṣ-ṣalāti wa-z-zakāti wa-kāna ʿinda rabbihī marḍiyyan
He used to bid his family to [maintain] the prayer and to [pay] the zakat, and was pleasing to his Lord.
وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ إِدْرِيسَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ صِدِّيقًا نَّبِيًّا
wa-ḏkur fī l-kitābi ˈidrīsa ˈinnahū kāna ṣiddīqan nabiyyan
And mention in the Book Idrees. Indeed, he was a truthful one and a prophet,
وَرَفَعْنَـٰهُ مَكَانًا عَلِيًّا
wa-rafaʿnāhu makānan ʿaliyyan
and We raised him to an exalted station.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ مِن ذُرِّيَّةِ ءَادَمَ وَمِمَّنْ حَمَلْنَا مَعَ نُوحٍ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّةِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ وَمِمَّنْ هَدَيْنَا وَٱجْتَبَيْنَآ ۚ إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ خَرُّوا۟ سُجَّدًا وَبُكِيًّا ۩
ˈulāˈika llaḏīna ˈanʿama llāhu ʿalayhim mina n-nabiyyīna min ḏurriyyati ˈādama wa-mimman ḥamalnā maʿa nūḥin wa-min ḏurriyyati ˈibrāhīma wa-ˈisrāˈīla wa-mimman hadaynā wa-ǧtabaynā ˈiḏā tutlā ʿalayhim ˈāyātu r-raḥmāni ḫarrū suǧǧadan wa-bukiyyan
They are the ones whom Allah has blessed from among the prophets of Adam’s progeny, and from [the progeny of] those We carried with Noah, and from among the progeny of Abraham and Israel, and from among those that We guided and chose. When the signs of the All-beneficent were recited to them, they would fall down weeping in prostration.
فَخَلَفَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ خَلْفٌ أَضَاعُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ ٱلشَّهَوَٰتِ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَلْقَوْنَ غَيًّا
fa-ḫalafa min baʿdihim ḫalfun ˈaḍāʿū ṣ-ṣalāta wa-ttabaʿū š-šahawāti fa-sawfa yalqawna ġayyan
But they were succeeded by an evil posterity who neglected the prayer, and followed [their base] appetites. So they will soon encounter [the reward of] perversity,
إِلَّا مَن تَابَ وَءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحًا فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يَدْخُلُونَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ شَيْـًٔا
ˈillā man tāba wa-ˈāmana wa-ʿamila ṣāliḥan fa-ˈulāˈika yadḫulūna l-ǧannata wa-lā yuẓlamūna šayˈan
barring those who repent, believe, and act righteously. Such will enter paradise, and they will not be wronged in the least.
جَنَّـٰتِ عَدْنٍ ٱلَّتِى وَعَدَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ عِبَادَهُۥ بِٱلْغَيْبِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ وَعْدُهُۥ مَأْتِيًّا
ǧannāti ʿadnin-i llatī waʿada r-raḥmānu ʿibādahū bi-l-ġaybi ˈinnahū kāna waʿduhū maˈtiyyan
Gardens of Eden promised by the All-beneficent to His servants, [while they were still] unseen. Indeed His promise is bound to come to pass.
لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا إِلَّا سَلَـٰمًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ رِزْقُهُمْ فِيهَا بُكْرَةً وَعَشِيًّا
lā yasmaʿūna fīhā laġwan ˈillā salāman wa-lahum rizquhum fīhā bukratan wa-ʿašiyyan
Therein they will not hear vain talk, but only ‘Peace!’ Therein they will have their provision morning and evening.
تِلْكَ ٱلْجَنَّةُ ٱلَّتِى نُورِثُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا مَن كَانَ تَقِيًّا
tilka l-ǧannatu llatī nūriṯu min ʿibādinā man kāna taqiyyan
This is the paradise We will give as inheritance to those of Our servants who are Godwary.
وَمَا نَتَنَزَّلُ إِلَّا بِأَمْرِ رَبِّكَ ۖ لَهُۥ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِينَا وَمَا خَلْفَنَا وَمَا بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ ۚ وَمَا كَانَ رَبُّكَ نَسِيًّا
wa-mā natanazzalu ˈillā bi-ˈamri rabbika lahū mā bayna ˈaydīnā wa-mā ḫalfanā wa-mā bayna ḏālika wa-mā kāna rabbuka nasiyyan
[O Gabriel, tell the Prophet,] ‘We do not descend except by the command of your Lord. To Him belongs whatever is before us and whatever is behind us and whatever is in between that, and your Lord does not forget
رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فَٱعْبُدْهُ وَٱصْطَبِرْ لِعِبَـٰدَتِهِۦ ۚ هَلْ تَعْلَمُ لَهُۥ سَمِيًّا
rabbu s-samāwāti wa-l-ˈarḍi wa-mā baynahumā fa-ʿbudhu wa-ṣṭabir li-ʿibādatihī hal taʿlamu lahū samiyyan
—the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them. So worship Him and be steadfast in His worship. Do you know anyone who could be His namesake?’
وَيَقُولُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ أَءِذَا مَا مِتُّ لَسَوْفَ أُخْرَجُ حَيًّا
wa-yaqūlu l-ˈinsānu ˈa-ˈiḏā mā mittu la-sawfa ˈuḫraǧu ḥayyan
Man says, ‘What? Shall I be brought forth alive [from the grave], when I have been dead?’
أَوَلَا يَذْكُرُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ أَنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰهُ مِن قَبْلُ وَلَمْ يَكُ شَيْـًٔا
ˈa-wa-lā yaḏkuru l-ˈinsānu ˈannā ḫalaqnāhu min qablu wa-lam yaku šayˈan
Does not man remember that We created him before when he was nothing?
فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَحْشُرَنَّهُمْ وَٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَ ثُمَّ لَنُحْضِرَنَّهُمْ حَوْلَ جَهَنَّمَ جِثِيًّا
fa-wa-rabbika la-naḥšurannahum wa-š-šayāṭīna ṯumma la-nuḥḍirannahum ḥawla ǧahannama ǧiṯiyyan
By your Lord, We will surely gather them with the devils; then We will surely bring them up around hell [scrambling] on their knees.
ثُمَّ لَنَنزِعَنَّ مِن كُلِّ شِيعَةٍ أَيُّهُمْ أَشَدُّ عَلَى ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ عِتِيًّا
ṯumma la-nanziʿanna min kulli šīʿatin ˈayyuhum ˈašaddu ʿalā r-raḥmāni ʿitiyyan
Then from every group We shall draw whichever of them was more defiant towards the All-beneficent.
ثُمَّ لَنَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ أَوْلَىٰ بِهَا صِلِيًّا
ṯumma la-naḥnu ˈaʿlamu bi-llaḏīna hum ˈawlā bihā ṣiliyyan
Then surely We will know best those who deserve most to enter it.
وَإِن مِّنكُمْ إِلَّا وَارِدُهَا ۚ كَانَ عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ حَتْمًا مَّقْضِيًّا
wa-ˈin minkum ˈillā wāriduhā kāna ʿalā rabbika ḥatman maqḍiyyan
There is none of you but will come to it: a [matter that is a] decided certainty with your Lord.
ثُمَّ نُنَجِّى ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوا۟ وَّنَذَرُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ فِيهَا جِثِيًّا
ṯumma nunaǧǧī llaḏīna ttaqaw wa-naḏaru ẓ-ẓālimīna fīhā ǧiṯiyyan
Then We will deliver those who are Godwary, and leave the wrongdoers in it, fallen on their knees.
وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَـٰتُنَا بَيِّنَـٰتٍ قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَىُّ ٱلْفَرِيقَيْنِ خَيْرٌ مَّقَامًا وَأَحْسَنُ نَدِيًّا
wa-ˈiḏā tutlā ʿalayhim ˈāyātunā bayyinātin qāla llaḏīna kafarū li-llaḏīna ˈāmanū ˈayyu l-farīqayni ḫayrun maqāman wa-ˈaḥsanu nadiyyan
When Our manifest signs are recited to them, the faithless say to the faithful, ‘Which of the two groups is superior in station and better with respect to company?’
وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هُمْ أَحْسَنُ أَثَـٰثًا وَرِءْيًا
wa-kam ˈahlaknā qablahum min qarnin hum ˈaḥsanu ˈaṯāṯan wa-riˈyan
How many a generation We have destroyed before them, who were superior in furnishings and appearance!
قُلْ مَن كَانَ فِى ٱلضَّلَـٰلَةِ فَلْيَمْدُدْ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ مَدًّا ۚ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا رَأَوْا۟ مَا يُوعَدُونَ إِمَّا ٱلْعَذَابَ وَإِمَّا ٱلسَّاعَةَ فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ هُوَ شَرٌّ مَّكَانًا وَأَضْعَفُ جُندًا
qul man kāna fī ḍ-ḍalālati fa-l-yamdud lahu r-raḥmānu maddan ḥattā ˈiḏā raˈaw mā yūʿadūna ˈimmā l-ʿaḏāba wa-ˈimmā s-sāʿata fa-sa-yaʿlamūna man huwa šarrun makānan wa-ˈaḍʿafu ǧundan
Say, ‘Whoever abides in error, the All-beneficent shall prolong his respite until they sight what they have been promised: either punishment, or the Hour.’ Then they will know whose position is worse, and whose host is weaker.
وَيَزِيدُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱهْتَدَوْا۟ هُدًى ۗ وَٱلْبَـٰقِيَـٰتُ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتُ خَيْرٌ عِندَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَابًا وَخَيْرٌ مَّرَدًّا
wa-yazīdu llāhu llaḏīna htadaw hudan wa-l-bāqiyātu ṣ-ṣāliḥātu ḫayrun ʿinda rabbika ṯawāban wa-ḫayrun maraddan
Allah enhances in guidance those who are [rightly] guided, and lasting righteous deeds are better with your Lord in reward, and better at the return [to Allah].
أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى كَفَرَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَقَالَ لَأُوتَيَنَّ مَالًا وَوَلَدًا
ˈa-fa-raˈayta llaḏī kafara bi-ˈāyātinā wa-qāla la-ˈūtayanna mālan wa-waladan
Have you not regarded him who defies Our signs, and says, ‘I will surely be given wealth and children’?
أَطَّلَعَ ٱلْغَيْبَ أَمِ ٱتَّخَذَ عِندَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ عَهْدًا
ˈa-ṭṭalaʿa l-ġayba ˈami ttaḫaḏa ʿinda r-raḥmāni ʿahdan
Has he come to know the Unseen, or taken a promise from the All-beneficent?
كَلَّا ۚ سَنَكْتُبُ مَا يَقُولُ وَنَمُدُّ لَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ مَدًّا
kallā sa-naktubu mā yaqūlu wa-namuddu lahū mina l-ʿaḏābi maddan
No indeed! We will write down what he says, and We will prolong his punishment endlessly.
وَنَرِثُهُۥ مَا يَقُولُ وَيَأْتِينَا فَرْدًا
wa-nariṯuhū mā yaqūlu wa-yaˈtīnā fardan
We shall take over from him what he talks about, and he will come to Us alone.
وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ءَالِهَةً لِّيَكُونُوا۟ لَهُمْ عِزًّا
wa-ttaḫaḏū min dūni llāhi ˈālihatan li-yakūnū lahum ʿizzan
They have taken gods besides Allah that they may be a [source of] might to them.
كَلَّا ۚ سَيَكْفُرُونَ بِعِبَادَتِهِمْ وَيَكُونُونَ عَلَيْهِمْ ضِدًّا
kallā sa-yakfurūna bi-ʿibādatihim wa-yakūnūna ʿalayhim ḍiddan
No Indeed! Soon they will disown their worship, and they will be their opponents.
أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَ عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ تَؤُزُّهُمْ أَزًّا
ˈa-lam tara ˈannā ˈarsalnā š-šayāṭīna ʿalā l-kāfirīna taˈuzzuhum ˈazzan
Have you not regarded that We unleash the devils upon the faithless to urge them vigorously?
فَلَا تَعْجَلْ عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ إِنَّمَا نَعُدُّ لَهُمْ عَدًّا
fa-lā taʿǧal ʿalayhim ˈinnamā naʿuddu lahum ʿaddan
So do not make haste against them; indeed We are counting for them, a counting [down].
يَوْمَ نَحْشُرُ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ إِلَى ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ وَفْدًا
yawma naḥšuru l-muttaqīna ˈilā r-raḥmāni wafdan
The day We shall gather the Godwary toward the All-beneficent, on mounts,
وَنَسُوقُ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ وِرْدًا
wa-nasūqu l-muǧrimīna ˈilā ǧahannama wirdan
and drive the guilty as a thirsty herd towards hell,
لَّا يَمْلِكُونَ ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةَ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ عِندَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ عَهْدًا
lā yamlikūna š-šafāʿata ˈillā mani ttaḫaḏa ʿinda r-raḥmāni ʿahdan
no one will have the power to intercede [with Allah], except for him who has taken a covenant with the All-beneficent.
وَقَالُوا۟ ٱتَّخَذَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ وَلَدًا
wa-qālū ttaḫaḏa r-raḥmānu waladan
They say, ‘The All-beneficent has taken a son!’
لَّقَدْ جِئْتُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِدًّا
la-qad ǧiˈtum šayˈan ˈiddan
You have certainly advanced something hideous!
تَكَادُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُ يَتَفَطَّرْنَ مِنْهُ وَتَنشَقُّ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَتَخِرُّ ٱلْجِبَالُ هَدًّا
takādu s-samāwātu yatafaṭṭarna minhu wa-tanšaqqu l-ˈarḍu wa-taḫirru l-ǧibālu haddan
The heavens are about to be rent apart at it, the earth to split open, and the mountains to collapse into bits,
أَن دَعَوْا۟ لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ وَلَدًا
ˈan daʿaw li-r-raḥmāni waladan
that they should ascribe a son to the All-beneficent!
وَمَا يَنۢبَغِى لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ أَن يَتَّخِذَ وَلَدًا
wa-mā yanbaġī li-r-raḥmāni ˈan yattaḫiḏa waladan
It does not behoove the All-beneficent to take a son.
إِن كُلُّ مَن فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ إِلَّآ ءَاتِى ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ عَبْدًا
ˈin kullu man fī s-samāwāti wa-l-ˈarḍi ˈillā ˈātī r-raḥmāni ʿabdan
There is none in the heavens and the earth but he comes to the All-beneficent as a servant.
لَّقَدْ أَحْصَىٰهُمْ وَعَدَّهُمْ عَدًّا
la-qad ˈaḥṣāhum wa-ʿaddahum ʿaddan
Certainly He has counted them [all] and numbered them precisely,
وَكُلُّهُمْ ءَاتِيهِ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ فَرْدًا
wa-kulluhum ˈātīhi yawma l-qiyāmati fardan
and each of them will come to Him alone on the Day of Resurrection.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ سَيَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ وُدًّا
ˈinna llaḏīna ˈāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti sa-yaǧʿalu lahumu r-raḥmānu wuddan
Indeed those who have faith and do righteous deeds—the All-beneficent will endear them [to His creation].
فَإِنَّمَا يَسَّرْنَـٰهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لِتُبَشِّرَ بِهِ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ وَتُنذِرَ بِهِۦ قَوْمًا لُّدًّا
fa-ˈinnamā yassarnāhu bi-lisānika li-tubaššira bihi l-muttaqīna wa-tunḏira bihī qawman luddan
Indeed We have made it simple in your language so that you may give good news thereby to the Godwary and warn with it a disputatious lot.
وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هَلْ تُحِسُّ مِنْهُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ أَوْ تَسْمَعُ لَهُمْ رِكْزًۢا
wa-kam ˈahlaknā qablahum min qarnin hal tuḥissu minhum min ˈaḥadin ˈaw tasmaʿu lahum rikzan
How many a generation We have destroyed before them! Can you descry any one of them, or hear from them so much as a murmur?
