Lyrics

With English translation

O water, would we ever drink you after him, O water?

While you, O my master,

Stumbled, crying out: 'O my grandfather, thirst has torn my insides!'

Your groans were faint,

Yet the river's waves were shameless, flowing freely to and fro.

How worthless is my worldly life!

May the sweet water of Alqam turn into bitter poison!

O water, would we ever drink you after him, O water?

While you, O essence of life,

Stumbled, calling out: 'O my grandfather, thirst has torn my insides!'

Your groans were faint,

Yet the river's waves were shameless, flowing freely to and fro.

How worthless is my worldly life!

May the sweet water of Alqam turn into bitter poison!

Parables seek forgiveness before your benevolence,

O my master, even as your tongue was parched with thirst.

How countless were the arrows piercing you,

And my sins add yet another wound to them.

You receive my misdeeds yet bestow your goodness upon me,

And I know that my sins have stained my very clay.

I fear that my guilt will part me from you at the end of my path.

There is a servant who stumbles and slips,

And there is a servant steadfast upon the path.

There is one who merely calls for his Imam,

And there is one for whom his Imam himself prays.

There are those like me,

And there is the likes of the noble Abu Thumama Al-Sa'idi.

Not for a single moment did he neglect his prayer,

So that his sacred love would never be lost.

Not for a single moment did he neglect his prayer,

So that his profound love would never be lost.

His heart attuned to the call to prayer,

Even as an arrow pierced deep within his chest.

And to one drowning like me, extend the hand of repentance,

For far be it from You to turn away my reaching hand.

For you, O my Master,

Your habit is benevolence,

(2x)And your innate nature is generosity,

Make my little offering much,

You, O my Master,

O Messenger of Allah!

And your nature is generosity.

O water, would we drink you after him?

O water!

While you, O my Master,

Have gathered a pillow from the sand,

And the sand is scorching hot!

May my eyes be blinded!

Under the burning sun, With no shade over you except the horses.

How could I ever cease my weeping?

Even if I wept tears of blood, I could never do you justice.

O water, would we drink you after him?

O water!

While you, O my Master,

Have gathered a pillow from the sand,

And the sand is scorching hot!

May my eyes be blinded,

Under the sun, With no shade over you except the horses.

How could I ever cease my weeping?

Even if I wept tears of blood, I could never do you justice.

Which tear could ever be enough for you, which tear?

You gather my broken pieces while your holy body is torn apart.

He who has no excuse, yet still begs for your pardon.

لهسه خيرك تارس كفوفيUntil now, your grace has filled my hands;

Thank you, my Master' is never enough.

Even the word 'thank you' itself requires another thank you.

Not merely gratitude spoken by the tongue,

Thank you with every limb and sense, thank you,

Thanks for my lowered gaze and my flowing tears,

Thanks for closing my ears to all but the sounds of lamentation,

(2x)I thank You that even my thoughts have never wandered to anyone but You,

Your head is atop the spear, yet Your severed throat bleeds blessings,

All-compassionate and bountiful even amidst the burning of the tents.

And no wonder at this,

For it is Your custom, my Master, to show goodness, and Your nature is generosity,

And Your nature is generosity.

My Master, accept my little as much,

For it is Your custom, my Master, to show goodness,

And Your nature is generosity,

Ah, O water, shall we ever drink water after you?

While You, my Master, are thirsty, and your parched lips cannot even touch,

While I am fully satisfied with drink,

The river gave me drink, yet took away your water-bearer!

Zaynab is left helpless and distressed,

And night has fallen upon them without any tent.

O water, shall we drink after you,

While You, my Master, are thirsty, and these lips cannot meet together?

While I am fully satisfied with drink,

The river offered me drink, yet took away your water-bearer!

Zaynab is left helpless and distressed,

Night has fallen upon them without any tent.

May every eye shed tears like a collapsing bank,

While Your sister, O rope of God, is dragged bound in ropes!

They make her pass by the river,

And she sees its water,

She sees the moon fallen by the riverbank,

Abbas lies motionless, while the river keeps flowing, O God!

Yet he is the true Euphrates that quenches the thirsty.

She sees the moon fallen by the riverbank,

Abbas lies motionless, while the river keeps flowing,

Yet he is the true Euphrates that quenches the thirsty.

من أدب ساقي العطاشى الناس تتعلم أدبهاFrom the etiquette of the water-bearer of the thirsty, people learn their manners;

He always kept your presence before him, and that was the secret of your exalted station.

When he stepped into the river water, how did he weigh his thoughts?

(2x)A drink was lawful for him, yet he scooped it up and did not drink it.

(2x)Whoever seeks true gnosis finds it only with the standard-bearer,

And from the water-skin of the thirsty hero, I only crave a handful of noble traits.

Quench me with adab, not with water!

For your custom, O my master, is bounty,

وسجيتك الكرمand your innate nature is generosity.

Make your custom of benevolence and your nature of generosity shine upon me.
