ففطمنا بفطرة قد تسابقت للعلاWe were weaned upon an innate devotion that raced toward heights of glory,

وابتدينا بالزحف حبوًا نبى بأن نحملAnd we began crawling along, refusing to be carried.

خشية التيه يحملونا وإن بكانا علاFearing we would get lost, they carried us even if our weeping grew loud,

إي وإلا تهنا صغارًا ولم نزر كربلاءYes, otherwise we would have wandered lost as children and never visited Karbala.

حتى إذا زرنا قلنا تصبرناUntil, when we visited, we said, "We have endured,"

أنجبنا أنجبنا قد ذقناهWe were born, we were born, we have tasted it,

أنجبنا قد ذقناهWe were born, we have tasted it.

ما تعلمنا المشي إلا لكي نزور الحسينWe only learned to walk so that we could visit Hussain,

خطوة تسير بأخرى ولطمة باليدينOne footstep following another, and hands beating upon our chests,

ومسيرٌ بكل خدٍّ جادت به كلُّ عينAnd a path on every cheek, shed generously by every eye,

فاتجهنا ثم سرنا لأول القبلتينSo we headed forth and walked toward our first of two Qiblahs,

ربي توسلنا سوى رفقٍ فاكتبنا فاكتبناMy Lord, we plead only for grace, so record us, record us!

للسبط أنجبناFor the Prophet's grandson we were born,

وفيه قد ذبناand in him we have melted away,

للسبط أنجبناFor the Prophet's grandson we were born,

وفيه قد ذبنا وفيه قد ذبناand in him we have melted away, in him we have melted away!

فكبرنا ثم وجدنا لعشقنا مخرجاThen we grew older and found an outlet for our passionate love,

حلم قلبٍ ونبض شوقٍ بكربلاء عرجاA heart's dream and a longing pulse that ascended to Karbala,

رحمة الله بالعباد كانت لنا الفرجGod's mercy upon the servants was our relief,

إي وإلا كنا قُتلنا بشوقنا حرجاIndeed, or else we would have died of the agony of our longing!

والله قد ذبنا والقلب قد جنّا آهBy Allah, we have melted, and the heart has grown crazed with love, ah!

وفيه قد ذبنا بالصدق أنجبناAnd in him we have melted, truly we were brought forth for him,

وفيه قد ذبناand in him we have melted away,

حسين حسين حسين حسين حسينHussain, Hussain, Hussain, Hussain, Hussain!

لم يحدنا ولن يحيدنا عن عشقنا قتلناOur being slain has not held us back and never will deter us from our love!

قطعوا الأرجل سنأتي والحبو يحملناThough they sever our legs, we will come, crawling bearing us forward,

قطعوا الأيدي سنأتي بقماطنا كلناThough they sever our arms, all of us will come wrapped in our shrouds,

فجرونا فما رضينا به لهذا الهناThey blew us up, yet we accepted it not, for this bliss,

بالحب أيقنا عذابناThrough love we grew certain that our torment,

يهنا يهناbecomes sweet, becomes sweet!
