غريباً أرى

على وصل نفسي تحنانهاfor keeping company with my soul's deep yearning.

فكم لي قبلك لوامةFor how many women before you rebuked me,

تشاغلت مطرحاً شأنهاyet I turned away, disregarding their concern.

ولو وجدت بعض ما قد وجدتAnd had they felt even a portion of what I endure,

لبلت من الدمع أردانهاthey would have soaked their sleeves with tears.

خلا أنها مذ رأتني غدوتExcept that ever since she saw me become

لهيف الحشاشة حرانهاconsumed by heartache and blazing with grief,

فقالت أجدك من ذي حشىshe said: Is it in earnest that within you

جوى الحزن لازم أقرانهاthe burning pain of grief clings to it incessantly?

لمن حرق الوجد تبكيFor whose passionate sorrow do you weep,

وراء حنايا ضلوعك نيرانهاwhile its fires rage behind the curves of your ribs?

تسل وباللهTake comfort, and by God,

لما اغتنمت من جدة اللهو إبانهاwhy not seize moments of joy in their season?

فقلت سلوت إذاً مهجتيI replied: Then I would be abandoning my very soul,

إذا أنا حاولت سلوانهاwere I ever to seek solace from this grief.

كفاني ضنىً أن ترى في الحسينIt is agony enough for me to see that through al-Husayn,

شفت آل مروان أضغانهاthe family of Marwan quenched their bitter grudges,

فأغضبت الله في قتلهand angered God by slaying him,

وأرضت بذلك شيطانهاwhile pleasing their Satan with that deed.

عشية أن طغى بغيها فجاءته تركب طغيانهاOn the eve when its injustice transgressed, it advanced upon him riding its tyranny,

وحفت بمن حيث يلقى الجموع يثني بماضيه وحدانهاAnd surrounded the one who, wherever he meets the hordes, repels their masses with his sharp sword,

وسامته يركب إحدى اثنتين وقد شرعت الحرب أسنانهاDemanding he choose between one of two fates, as war bared its fangs:

فإما يرى مذعنا أو تموت نفس أبى العز إذعانهاEither to surrender, or that a soul whose honor rejects subjugation shall die.

غريبا أراك يا غريب الطفوف توسد خديك تربانها (2x)Estranged do I see you, O stranger of at-Taff, with its sands pillowing your cheeks!

مصاب أطاش عقول الأنام جميعا وحير أذهانها (2x)A tragedy that confounded the minds of all mankind and perplexed their intellects!

فقال لها اعتصمي بالإباء فنفس الأبي وما زانهاHe said to his soul: hold fast to steadfast honor, for what adorns the soul of the noble is its defiance,

رأى القتل صبرا شعار الكرام وفخرا يزين لها شانهاHe saw enduring death with patience as the badge of the noble and an honor that glorifies its standing.

ركين وللأرض تحت الكماة رجيف يزلزل ثهلانهاUnyielding, while beneath the armored champions the ground trembled, shaking Mount Thahlān,

أقر على الأرض من ظهرها إذا ما ألم الرعب أقرانهاFar more steadfast upon the earth than its firm surface, when terror strikes his adversaries.

تزيد طلاقة في وجهه إذا غير الخوف ألوانهاThe radiance and cheer in his countenance only increase, when fear drains the color from their faces.

ولما قضى للعلا حقها وشيد بالسيف بنيانهاAnd when he fulfilled the debt owed to glory and erected its foundation with the sword,

ترجل للموت عن سابق له أغلت الخيل ميدانهاHe dismounted toward death from a steed for which the cavalry had heated the battlefield,

تواضع أيد البشر في صرعة له حبب العز لقيانهاWith boundless joy and composure in his fall, a meeting made beloved to him by glory,

كأن المنية كانت لديه فتاة تواصل خلصانهاAs though death to him were a beloved maiden who comes to embrace her faithful lover,

جلتها له البيض في موقفThe white swords unveiled her to him in a battlefield

به أثكل السمر خرسانهاWhere brown spears lost their tips and fell silent,

فبات بها تحت ليل الكفاحSo he spent the night beneath the gloom of battle,

طروب النقيبة جذلانهاDelighted of spirit and joyful,

وأصبح مشتجرا للرماحAnd at dawn became a target intertwined with spears,

تحلي الدماء منه مرانهاWhose pliant wood was adorned by his blood;

عفيرا متى عاينته الكماةDust-laden, whenever the brave warriors beheld him,

يختطف الرعب ألوانهاTerror would snatch away their color.

فما أجلت الحرب عن مثلهWar has never cleared away from the likes of him,

صريعا يجبن شجعانهاA fallen hero who makes the bravest turn cowardly,

تريب المحياHis face veiled in dust,

تظن السماء بأن على الأرض كيوانهاSuch that the sky imagines Saturn itself has fallen upon the earth.

غريبا أرى يا غريب الطفوفA stranger do I see, O Stranger of al-Taff,

توسد خديك كثبانهاWhose cheeks rest upon its sand dunes.

ألست زعيم بني غالبAre you not the leader of the sons of Ghalib,

ومطعم في الجدب ومطعنهاFeeding in times of famine and defending against aggression?

فلم أغفلت بك أوتارهاThen why has your blood-revenge been neglected,

وليس التعاجل إمكانهاWhile hastening to avenge was within its power?

أجبنا عن الحرب يا من غدواIs it cowardice before battle, O you who were

على أول الدهر أخدانهاCompanions of war since the beginning of time?

وإن هي نامت على وترهاAnd if it slumbered upon its vengeance,

فلا خالط النوم أجفانهاMay sleep never grace its eyelids!

تنام بالطف علياهاIts glory lies dead in al-Taff,

أمية تنقض أركانهاWhile the Umayyads demolish its pillars,

وتلك على الأرض من أقدمٍ وربّ السماواتِ سكانهاAnd those bodies upon the earth were of those who were foremost, while the Lord of the heavens is their resident.

ثلاثاً قد تبددت بالعراءFor three days left scattered in the bare desert,

لها تنسج الريح أكفانها أكفانهاWith the wind weaving their only shrouds. Their shrouds!
