عطفاً بأن تلبيthat out of grace you might grant

إن لم أكن مناصرIf I could not be your supporter,

والكف عنك قاصرand my hand fell short of helping you,

أتمنى أكون ويا القمر على الشاطئ نخلةI wish I were a palm tree beside the Moon upon the riverbank,

واحذر من تخفي لقطع الجنودto warn of those lying in ambush among the soldiers,

لأخذ عن راسه وأصيد ضربة العمودto shield his head and catch the blow of the iron mace,

ولا أنظرك تنحب على الكفين والجودso I would not see you weeping over his severed hands and the waterskin.

السهم صوبني يا ريت ولا عينك تشوفWould that the arrow had struck me instead, so your eye would never suffer,

عسى يصب منحري ولا أشاهد جوده يصبmay my throat bleed rather than seeing his waterskin spill its water.

مصابه مصابيHis tragedy is my tragedy,

كجوده انسكابيlike his spilled waterskin is my outpouring,

سالت على التراب أمنياتيspilled upon the dust are my wishes,

إن لم أكن مناصرIf I could not be your supporter,

والكف عنك قاصرand my hand fell short of helping you,

حتى لتلك العناصرeven unto those basic elements,

أمنياتي (4x)are my wishes,

عنان الفرس اتمنى اصير بكف الأكبرI wish I were the steed's rein in the hand of Ali al-Akbar,

أعد مسيرة مهره لا يضيع المعسكرTo guide his steed's path so the encampment is not lost,

لو سرج أصير وما أخليه يتقنطرOr become a saddle and not let him fall,

ولا أشوفه إربًا إربًا غالي توذرNor see that precious one torn into pieces.

أصير افرشني عالقاع ألم جسمه توزعSpread me on the ground to gather his scattered body,

وإذا منا عضو يطيح أقول لك سيدي ارجعAnd if a limb falls away, I would say: 'My master, come back.'

كنسخة البشير كجسمه العفيرLike the image of the Prophet, his body covered in dust,

لملمت في الحصيرGathered upon a woven mat,

إن لم أكن مناصر والكف عنك قاصرThough I could not be your supporter and my hand fell short,

حاطم الكف والعناصرBroken are my hands and being,

أمنياتي (4x)My wishes,

بصينية القاسم ردت تعلق لي شمعةOn Al-Qasim's tray, I wished to light a candle for him,

تعجن حنة بزفته تحني له إصبعهTo knead henna for his bridal procession and dye his finger,

لما تلبس لسلامته خليني درعهWhen you pray for his safety, make me his shield,

خلي ينقطع قلبي ولا ينقطع شسعLet my heart be severed rather than his sandal-strap break,

لو بيد الأمر كان أقطع عمري لأجلهHad it been in my hands, I would sacrifice my life for him,

وأصير آن ساعة وداع تزود منه رملةAnd become the moment of farewell when Ramlah bids him goodbye.

يا ليتني أوافي شبل بني منافO would that I could fulfill my pledge to the cub of Banu Manaf,

نثرت في الزفافScattered in the wedding procession,

إن لم أكن مناصر والكف عنك قاصرThough I could not be your supporter and my hand fell short,

حاطم الكف والعناصرBroken are my hands and being,

أمنياتي (4x)My wishes,

يا ريت أصير ريح أشيل شوك وترابI wish I could become a wind carrying away the thorns and dust,

وأعميها عين تنظر لربات الحجابAnd blind every eye that gazes upon the veiled noblewomen,

لو زاجل اقصد للنجف واتعنى بكتابOr if I were a carrier pigeon heading to Najaf, bearing a letter,

الحق بناتك بالسبي يا داحي الباب"Rescue your daughters from captivity, O Conqueror of Khaybar!"

تمنيت ان قلوب ليل ستار لزينب تمدI wished the heart of the night would stretch out as a veil for Zaynab,

واصير لزين العباد عصا عليها تسندand that I could be a staff for Zayn al-Abidin to lean upon.

في رحلة السباياIn the journey of the captives,

في عاصفة الرزاياin the tempest of afflictions,

تبعثرت بقايا أمنياتيthe remnants of my wishes were scattered.

هاتي كل العناصر أترك عنك تقاصرCome, all elements, cast aside your shortcomings,

هاتي كل العناصرbring forward every element,

أمنياتي (4x)my wishes!

يا سيدي بهودج ظعنكم شدني غيمةO my master, tie me like a cloud to your caravan’s litter,

أغسل اللي منحره دامي لو أطفي الخيمةso I may wash the bleeding throat or extinguish the burning tent.

لو أصير كسرة ظل وفاي ليتيمةOr let me become a faithful shelter of shade for an orphan girl,

وارعد على الرايد تراجيها غنيمةand thunder against anyone who seeks her earrings as plunder.

لرضيعك أعصر ماي واصب روحي على شفتهLet me squeeze water for your infant, pouring my soul onto his lips,

واطمئن عمته عليه وابشر أمه واختهreassuring his aunt about him and giving glad tidings to his mother and sister.

من نوحي ما عسانيWhat can I possibly achieve with my mourning?

واعيد من زمانيHow can I turn back time?

ضاعت مع الأمانيLost along with hopes are

أمنياتي (4x)my wishes!

إن لم أكن مناصر والكف عنك قاصرThough I could not be your supporter and my hand fell short,

أمنياتي (4x)my wishes!

وبأربعينك ريت أصير لجابر عيونAnd on your Arbaeen, I wish I were eyes for Jabir,

بيه يصد قبر الذي بلا راس مدفونso that through them he could behold the grave of the one buried without a head.

لو ثالث اثنين انهض واتلقى الضعونOr if I were a third alongside them, rising to welcome the returning caravan,

ويا عطية أعوف اليرجعونAnd along with Atiyyah, I would welcome those returning.

الأماني أدري يا حسين فلا تدرك ظهوركI know, O Hussein, that wishes cannot bring back your presence.

إذا يوفق كل عام أجي مشايه يزوركIf granted success, I will come every year on foot to visit you.

لك الفؤاد يخفقFor you, the heart throbs with yearning,

فاعطف علي وارفقSo show me compassion and be gentle,

يا سيدي وحقق أمنياتيO my master, and fulfill my wishes!
