ما تراني أصنعWhat do you see that I can do?

عمتي لا نستطيع النوم والليل هجمAuntie, we cannot sleep, and the night has descended.

فإذا أحكي لكم عن قصة ذات ألمThen let me tell you a story of profound grief,

عن فتاة أمها ماتت بضلع منتحمabout a girl whose mother died with a crushed rib,

وأبوها مات في المحراب فالعين ندمand whose father was martyred in the prayer niche, leaving weeping eyes.

كبرت يتيمة قصة أليمة (2x)She grew up an orphan—a sorrowful tale.

قتلوا أخاها سمه اللئام اللئامThey killed her brother; the vile ones poisoned him.

اهدؤوا ونامواBe calm and sleep,

جاء الظلامDarkness has come,

شيبت لما رأت في ذات يوم أهلهاHer hair turned white the day she saw her kin,

كلهم ماتوا عطاشا في مساء حولهاall of them slain thirsty around her as evening fell.

ولها ابن أخ كالبدر قد كان لهاAnd she had a nephew who was like a full moon to her;

زغردت في عرسه حرب وطشت نبلهاwar celebrated at his wedding and scattered its arrows.

أمه الفجيعة أشعلت شموعها (2x)His grief-stricken mother lit his wedding candles,

تسهر الليالي نومها حرامspending the nights awake, sleep forbidden to her.

ياناموا ياناموا يهدؤوا نامواGo to sleep, go to sleep, be calm and sleep;

في غد نسافرtomorrow we travel,

غدا مقامno staying here tomorrow.

دعنا ننامLet us sleep.

ولها ابن أخ ثان جميل المنظرAnd she had a second nephew, so beauteous in countenance,

كان كالصبح بهيا مثل نهر الكوثرradiant like the morning, pure like the river of Kauthar.

قطعوه أمه نادته بين العسكرِThey cut him into pieces, while his mother called out to him among the army,

كيف تغفو يا حبيبي في تراب الحفر؟"How can you sleep, my beloved, upon the dusty earth of graves?"

يومه بعيد ولدي يعود (2x)"His day is yet far, my son shall return,

ينقضي الفراق يرجع الوئامSeparation will end, and harmony will return."

جاءنا الظلام فتهدؤوا ونامواDarkness has fallen upon us, so calm yourselves and sleep;

في غد نسافر ما لنا مقامTomorrow we journey on, we have no place to stay.

ثم ماذا صار يا عمتنا؟ ماذا جرى؟"Then what happened, O our aunt? What took place?"

نظرت طفلًا صغيرًا مثلكم فوق الثرى"I saw an infant child like you lying on the dust,

مات عطشانًا وعين أمه لم تنظراHe died thirsty while his mother's eyes could not bear to look;

نحره المذبوح من يخبرها من يا ترى؟At his severed throat—who could ever bear to tell her, who indeed?"

فانظروا المصيبة قصة عجيبة (2x)Behold the calamity, a harrowing tale!

باكيًا عليها ينحب اليمام اليمام اليمامMourning over it, the doves wail and lament.

ناموا ونامواSleep now, sleep...

بعد هذا عمتي هل فقدت من أحد؟"After this, my aunt, did you lose anyone else?"

فقدت يا نور عيني كافلًا كالفرقد"I lost, O light of my eyes, a guardian like a bright star;

عندما هم قطعوا منه يدًا صاحت يديWhen they severed his hand, my own hand cried out in pain,

راح ما ودعها نحو الفراق الأبديHe departed without bidding her farewell, into an eternal parting."

أخته النحيلة أصبحت ذليلةHis frail sister was left heartbroken and helpless,

أخته النحيلةHis frail, emaciated sister,

أصبحت ذليلةhas been left broken and humbled.

ليس يا صغاري ينفع الكلامO my little ones, words are of no avail now.

يا كلامWords cannot help...

في غد نسافر نسافرtomorrow we set out on our journey,

ولا لنا مقامfor we have no staying here.

جاء الظلامDarkness has fallen,

آخر القصة يرويها إليكمThe end of the story will be told to you,

شيب غارgrey hair steeped in sorrow...

قتلوا يوما أخاها روحهOne day, they killed her brother—her very soul,

ما ذنبهاwhat was her sin?

داست الخيل عليهThe horses trampled upon him,

واستدارت حربهاand their war turned upon her.

قلبها كان أخاهاHer brother was her very heart,

ضاع منها قلبهاand now her heart is lost from her.

هذه الحكاية ليست النهاية (2x)This story is not the end,

جاءنا الصباحMorning has broken upon us,

والجنود حامواand the enemy soldiers have surrounded us.
