Surah 11
سُورَةُ هُودٍ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
الٓر ۚ كِتَـٰبٌ أُحْكِمَتْ ءَايَـٰتُهُۥ ثُمَّ فُصِّلَتْ مِن لَّدُنْ حَكِيمٍ خَبِيرٍ
ʾ-l-r (ˈalif lām rā) kitābun ˈuḥkimat ˈāyātuhū ṯumma fuṣṣilat min ladun ḥakīmin ḫabīrin
Alif, Lam Ra. [This is] a Book, whose signs have been made definitive and then elaborated, from One [who is] all-wise, all-aware,
أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ ۚ إِنَّنِى لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ وَبَشِيرٌ
ˈallā taʿbudū ˈillā llāha ˈinnanī lakum minhu naḏīrun wa-bašīrun
declaring: ‘Worship no one but Allah. I am indeed a warner to you from Him and a bearer of good news.
وَأَنِ ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِ يُمَتِّعْكُم مَّتَـٰعًا حَسَنًا إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى وَيُؤْتِ كُلَّ ذِى فَضْلٍ فَضْلَهُۥ ۖ وَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَإِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ كَبِيرٍ
wa-ˈani staġfirū rabbakum ṯumma tūbū ˈilayhi yumattiʿkum matāʿan ḥasanan ˈilā ˈaǧalin musamman wa-yuˈti kulla ḏī faḍlin faḍlahū wa-ˈin tawallaw fa-ˈinnī ˈaḫāfu ʿalaykum ʿaḏāba yawmin kabīrin
Plead with your Lord for forgiveness, then turn to Him penitently. He will provide you with a good provision for a specified term and grant His grace to every meritorious person. But if you turn your backs [on Him], indeed I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day.
إِلَى ٱللَّهِ مَرْجِعُكُمْ ۖ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
ˈilā llāhi marǧiʿukum wa-huwa ʿalā kulli šayˈin qadīrun
To Allah will be your return, and He has power over all things.’
أَلَآ إِنَّهُمْ يَثْنُونَ صُدُورَهُمْ لِيَسْتَخْفُوا۟ مِنْهُ ۚ أَلَا حِينَ يَسْتَغْشُونَ ثِيَابَهُمْ يَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ عَلِيمٌۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ
ˈa-lā ˈinnahum yaṯnūna ṣudūrahum li-yastaḫfū minhu ˈa-lā ḥīna yastaġšūna ṯiyābahum yaʿlamu mā yusirrūna wa-mā yuʿlinūna ˈinnahū ʿalīmun bi-ḏāti ṣ-ṣudūri
Look! They fold up their breasts to hide [their secret feelings] from Him. Look! When they draw their cloaks over their heads, He knows whatever they keep secret and whatever they disclose. Indeed, He knows best whatever is in the breasts.
وَمَا مِن دَآبَّةٍ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ رِزْقُهَا وَيَعْلَمُ مُسْتَقَرَّهَا وَمُسْتَوْدَعَهَا ۚ كُلٌّ فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مُّبِينٍ
wa-mā min dābbatin fī l-ˈarḍi ˈillā ʿalā llāhi rizquhā wa-yaʿlamu mustaqarrahā wa-mustawdaʿahā kullun fī kitābin mubīnin
There is no animal on the earth, but that its sustenance lies with Allah, and He knows its [enduring] abode and its temporary place of lodging. Everything is in a manifest Book.
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ فِى سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍ وَكَانَ عَرْشُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلْمَآءِ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا ۗ وَلَئِن قُلْتَ إِنَّكُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ٱلْمَوْتِ لَيَقُولَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ
wa-huwa llaḏī ḫalaqa s-samāwāti wa-l-ˈarḍa fī sittati ˈayyāmin wa-kāna ʿaršuhū ʿalā l-māˈi li-yabluwakum ˈayyukum ˈaḥsanu ʿamalan wa-la-ˈin qulta ˈinnakum mabʿūṯūna min baʿdi l-mawti la-yaqūlanna llaḏīna kafarū ˈin hāḏā ˈillā siḥrun mubīnun
It is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days—and His Throne was [then] upon the waters—that He may test you [to see] which of you is best in conduct. Yet if you say, ‘You will indeed be raised up after death,’ the faithless will surely say, ‘This is nothing but plain magic.’
وَلَئِنْ أَخَّرْنَا عَنْهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابَ إِلَىٰٓ أُمَّةٍ مَّعْدُودَةٍ لَّيَقُولُنَّ مَا يَحْبِسُهُۥٓ ۗ أَلَا يَوْمَ يَأْتِيهِمْ لَيْسَ مَصْرُوفًا عَنْهُمْ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ
wa-la-ˈin ˈaḫḫarnā ʿanhumu l-ʿaḏāba ˈilā ˈummatin maʿdūdatin la-yaqūlunna mā yaḥbisuhū ˈa-lā yawma yaˈtīhim laysa maṣrūfan ʿanhum wa-ḥāqa bihim mā kānū bihī yastahziˈūna
And if We defer their punishment until a certain time, they will surely say, ‘What holds it back?’ Look! On the day it overtakes them it shall not be turned away from them, and they will be besieged by what they used to deride.
وَلَئِنْ أَذَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِنَّا رَحْمَةً ثُمَّ نَزَعْنَـٰهَا مِنْهُ إِنَّهُۥ لَيَـُٔوسٌ كَفُورٌ
wa-la-ˈin ˈaḏaqnā l-ˈinsāna minnā raḥmatan ṯumma nazaʿnāhā minhu ˈinnahū la-yaˈūsun kafūrun
If We let man taste a mercy from Us, and then withdraw it from him, he becomes despondent, ungrateful.
وَلَئِنْ أَذَقْنَـٰهُ نَعْمَآءَ بَعْدَ ضَرَّآءَ مَسَّتْهُ لَيَقُولَنَّ ذَهَبَ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتُ عَنِّىٓ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَفَرِحٌ فَخُورٌ
wa-la-ˈin ˈaḏaqnāhu naʿmāˈa baʿda ḍarrāˈa massathu la-yaqūlanna ḏahaba s-sayyiˈātu ʿannī ˈinnahū la-fariḥun faḫūrun
And if We let him have a taste of Our blessings after adversities have befallen him, he will surely say, ‘All ills have left me.’ Indeed, he becomes a vain braggart,
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُم مَّغْفِرَةٌ وَأَجْرٌ كَبِيرٌ
ˈillā llaḏīna ṣabarū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti ˈulāˈika lahum maġfiratun wa-ˈaǧrun kabīrun
excepting those who are patient and do righteous deeds. For such there will be forgiveness and a great reward.
فَلَعَلَّكَ تَارِكٌۢ بَعْضَ مَا يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَيْكَ وَضَآئِقٌۢ بِهِۦ صَدْرُكَ أَن يَقُولُوا۟ لَوْلَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَيْهِ كَنزٌ أَوْ جَآءَ مَعَهُۥ مَلَكٌ ۚ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ نَذِيرٌ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ وَكِيلٌ
fa-laʿallaka tārikun baʿḍa mā yūḥā ˈilayka wa-ḍāˈiqun bihī ṣadruka ˈan yaqūlū law-lā ˈunzila ʿalayhi kanzun ˈaw ǧāˈa maʿahū malakun ˈinnamā ˈanta naḏīrun wa-llāhu ʿalā kulli šayˈin wakīlun
[Look out] lest you should disregard aught of what has been revealed to you, and be upset because they say, ‘Why has not a treasure been sent down to him, or [why does] not an angel accompany him?’ You are only a warner, and Allah watches over all things.
أَمْ يَقُولُونَ ٱفْتَرَىٰهُ ۖ قُلْ فَأْتُوا۟ بِعَشْرِ سُوَرٍ مِّثْلِهِۦ مُفْتَرَيَـٰتٍ وَٱدْعُوا۟ مَنِ ٱسْتَطَعْتُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ
ˈam yaqūlūna ftarāhu qul fa-ˈtū bi-ʿašri suwarin miṯlihī muftarayātin wa-dʿū mani staṭaʿtum min dūni llāhi ˈin kuntum ṣādiqīna
Do they say, ‘He has fabricated it?’ Say, ‘Then bring ten surahs like it, fabricated, and invoke whomever you can, besides Allah, should you be truthful.’
فَإِلَّمْ يَسْتَجِيبُوا۟ لَكُمْ فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّمَآ أُنزِلَ بِعِلْمِ ٱللَّهِ وَأَن لَّآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ فَهَلْ أَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ
fa-ˈillam yastaǧībū lakum fa-ʿlamū ˈannamā ˈunzila bi-ʿilmi llāhi wa-ˈan lā ˈilāha ˈillā huwa fa-hal ˈantum muslimūna
But if they do not respond to you, know that it has been sent down by Allah’s knowledge, and that there is no god except Him. Will you, then, submit [to Allah]?
مَن كَانَ يُرِيدُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَزِينَتَهَا نُوَفِّ إِلَيْهِمْ أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ فِيهَا وَهُمْ فِيهَا لَا يُبْخَسُونَ
man kāna yurīdu l-ḥayāta d-dunyā wa-zīnatahā nuwaffi ˈilayhim ˈaʿmālahum fīhā wa-hum fīhā lā yubḫasūna
As for those who desire the life of this world and its glitter, We will recompense them fully for their works therein, and they shall not be underpaid in it.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ إِلَّا ٱلنَّارُ ۖ وَحَبِطَ مَا صَنَعُوا۟ فِيهَا وَبَـٰطِلٌ مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
ˈulāˈika llaḏīna laysa lahum fī l-ˈāḫirati ˈillā n-nāru wa-ḥabiṭa mā ṣanaʿū fīhā wa-bāṭilun mā kānū yaʿmalūna
They are the ones for whom there shall be nothing in the Hereafter but Fire: what they had accomplished in the world has failed, and their works have come to naught.
أَفَمَن كَانَ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ وَيَتْلُوهُ شَاهِدٌ مِّنْهُ وَمِن قَبْلِهِۦ كِتَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰٓ إِمَامًا وَرَحْمَةً ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ ۚ وَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِهِۦ مِنَ ٱلْأَحْزَابِ فَٱلنَّارُ مَوْعِدُهُۥ ۚ فَلَا تَكُ فِى مِرْيَةٍ مِّنْهُ ۚ إِنَّهُ ٱلْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
ˈa-fa-man kāna ʿalā bayyinatin min rabbihī wa-yatlūhu šāhidun minhu wa-min qablihī kitābu mūsā ˈimāman wa-raḥmatan ˈulāˈika yuˈminūna bihī wa-man yakfur bihī mina l-ˈaḥzābi fa-n-nāru mawʿiduhū fa-lā taku fī miryatin minhu ˈinnahu l-ḥaqqu min rabbika wa-lākinna ˈakṯara n-nāsi lā yuˈminūna
Is he who stands on a manifest proof from his Lord, and whom a witness of his own [family] follows? And before him there was the Book of Moses, a guide and mercy. It is they who have faith in it, and whoever defies him from among the factions, the Fire is their tryst. So do not be in doubt about it; it is the truth from your Lord, but most people do not have faith.
وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفْتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يُعْرَضُونَ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ وَيَقُولُ ٱلْأَشْهَـٰدُ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَبُوا۟ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ ۚ أَلَا لَعْنَةُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَى ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
wa-man ˈaẓlamu mimmani ftarā ʿalā llāhi kaḏiban ˈulāˈika yuʿraḍūna ʿalā rabbihim wa-yaqūlu l-ˈašhādu hāˈulāˈi llaḏīna kaḏabū ʿalā rabbihim ˈa-lā laʿnatu llāhi ʿalā ẓ-ẓālimīna
Who is a greater wrongdoer than him who fabricates a lie against Allah? Such shall be presented before their Lord, and the witnesses will say, ‘It is these who lied against their Lord.’ Behold! The curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers
ٱلَّذِينَ يَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَيَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًا وَهُم بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ هُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ
allaḏīna yaṣuddūna ʿan sabīli llāhi wa-yabġūnahā ʿiwaǧan wa-hum bi-l-ˈāḫirati hum kāfirūna
—those who bar [others] from the way of Allah, and seek to make it crooked, and disbelieve in the Hereafter.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَمْ يَكُونُوا۟ مُعْجِزِينَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا كَانَ لَهُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِنْ أَوْلِيَآءَ ۘ يُضَـٰعَفُ لَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ ۚ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَسْتَطِيعُونَ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ يُبْصِرُونَ
ˈulāˈika lam yakūnū muʿǧizīna fī l-ˈarḍi wa-mā kāna lahum min dūni llāhi min ˈawliyāˈa yuḍāʿafu lahumu l-ʿaḏābu mā kānū yastaṭīʿūna s-samʿa wa-mā kānū yubṣirūna
They cannot frustrate [Allah] on the earth, nor do they have besides Allah any guardian. For them the punishment shall be doubled, for they could neither listen, nor did they use to see.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ خَسِرُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَضَلَّ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَفْتَرُونَ
ˈulāˈika llaḏīna ḫasirū ˈanfusahum wa-ḍalla ʿanhum mā kānū yaftarūna
They are the ones who have ruined their souls, and what they used to fabricate has forsaken them.
لَا جَرَمَ أَنَّهُمْ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ هُمُ ٱلْأَخْسَرُونَ
lā ǧarama ˈannahum fī l-ˈāḫirati humu l-ˈaḫsarūna
Undoubtedly, they are the ones who will be the biggest losers in the Hereafter.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَأَخْبَتُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ
ˈinna llaḏīna ˈāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti wa-ˈaḫbatū ˈilā rabbihim ˈulāˈika ˈaṣḥābu l-ǧannati hum fīhā ḫālidūna
Indeed those who have faith and do righteous deeds and are humble before their Lord—they shall be the inhabitants of paradise, and they shall remain in it [forever].
مَثَلُ ٱلْفَرِيقَيْنِ كَٱلْأَعْمَىٰ وَٱلْأَصَمِّ وَٱلْبَصِيرِ وَٱلسَّمِيعِ ۚ هَلْ يَسْتَوِيَانِ مَثَلًا ۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
maṯalu l-farīqayni ka-l-ˈaʿmā wa-l-ˈaṣammi wa-l-baṣīri wa-s-samīʿi hal yastawiyāni maṯalan ˈa-fa-lā taḏakkarūna
The parable of the two parties is that of one who is blind and deaf and one who sees and hears. Are they equal in comparison? Will you not then take admonition?
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦٓ إِنِّى لَكُمْ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ
wa-la-qad ˈarsalnā nūḥan ˈilā qawmihī ˈinnī lakum naḏīrun mubīnun
Certainly We sent Noah to his people [to declare]: ‘Indeed I am a manifest warner to you.
أَن لَّا تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ ۖ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ أَلِيمٍ
ˈan lā taʿbudū ˈillā llāha ˈinnī ˈaḫāfu ʿalaykum ʿaḏāba yawmin ˈalīmin
Worship none but Allah. Indeed I fear for you the punishment of a painful day.’
فَقَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَوْمِهِۦ مَا نَرَىٰكَ إِلَّا بَشَرًا مِّثْلَنَا وَمَا نَرَىٰكَ ٱتَّبَعَكَ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ أَرَاذِلُنَا بَادِىَ ٱلرَّأْىِ وَمَا نَرَىٰ لَكُمْ عَلَيْنَا مِن فَضْلٍۭ بَلْ نَظُنُّكُمْ كَـٰذِبِينَ
fa-qāla l-malaˈu llaḏīna kafarū min qawmihī mā narāka ˈillā bašaran miṯlanā wa-mā narāka ttabaʿaka ˈillā llaḏīna hum ˈarāḏilunā bādiya r-raˈyi wa-mā narā lakum ʿalaynā min faḍlin bal naẓunnukum kāḏibīna
But the elite of the faithless from among his people said, ‘We do not see you to be anything but a human being like ourselves, and we do not see anyone following you except those who are simpleminded riffraff from our midst. Nor do we see that you have any merit over us. Indeed, we consider you to be liars.’
قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ أَرَءَيْتُمْ إِن كُنتُ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّى وَءَاتَىٰنِى رَحْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِهِۦ فَعُمِّيَتْ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنُلْزِمُكُمُوهَا وَأَنتُمْ لَهَا كَـٰرِهُونَ
qāla yā-qawmi ˈa-raˈaytum ˈin kuntu ʿalā bayyinatin min rabbī wa-ˈātānī raḥmatan min ʿindihī fa-ʿummiyat ʿalaykum ˈa-nulzimukumūhā wa-ˈantum lahā kārihūna
He said, ‘O my people! Tell me, should I stand on a manifest proof from my Lord, and He has granted me His own mercy—though it should be invisible to you—shall we force it upon you while you are averse to it?
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ لَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مَالًا ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّهُم مُّلَـٰقُوا۟ رَبِّهِمْ وَلَـٰكِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰكُمْ قَوْمًا تَجْهَلُونَ
wa-yā-qawmi lā ˈasˈalukum ʿalayhi mālan ˈin ˈaǧriya ˈillā ʿalā llāhi wa-mā ˈana bi-ṭāridi llaḏīna ˈāmanū ˈinnahum mulāqū rabbihim wa-lākinnī ˈarākum qawman taǧhalūna
O my people! I do not ask you any material reward for it. My reward lies only with Allah. But I will not drive away those who have faith: they will indeed encounter their Lord. But I see that you are an ignorant lot.
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ مَن يَنصُرُنِى مِنَ ٱللَّهِ إِن طَرَدتُّهُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
wa-yā-qawmi man yanṣurunī mina llāhi ˈin ṭaradtuhum ˈa-fa-lā taḏakkarūna
O my people! Who would come to my help against Allah were I to drive them away? Will you not then take admonition?
وَلَآ أَقُولُ لَكُمْ عِندِى خَزَآئِنُ ٱللَّهِ وَلَآ أَعْلَمُ ٱلْغَيْبَ وَلَآ أَقُولُ إِنِّى مَلَكٌ وَلَآ أَقُولُ لِلَّذِينَ تَزْدَرِىٓ أَعْيُنُكُمْ لَن يُؤْتِيَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ خَيْرًا ۖ ٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا فِىٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ ۖ إِنِّىٓ إِذًا لَّمِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
wa-lā ˈaqūlu lakum ʿindī ḫazāˈinu llāhi wa-lā ˈaʿlamu l-ġayba wa-lā ˈaqūlu ˈinnī malakun wa-lā ˈaqūlu li-llaḏīna tazdarī ˈaʿyunukum lan yuˈtiyahumu llāhu ḫayran-i llāhu ˈaʿlamu bi-mā fī ˈanfusihim ˈinnī ˈiḏan la-mina ẓ-ẓālimīna
I do not say to you that I possess the treasuries of Allah, neither do I know the Unseen. I do not claim to be an angel, neither do I say of those who are despicable in your eyes that Allah will not grant them any good—Allah knows best what is in their hearts—for then I would indeed be a wrongdoer.’
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰنُوحُ قَدْ جَـٰدَلْتَنَا فَأَكْثَرْتَ جِدَٰلَنَا فَأْتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَآ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
qālū yā-nūḥu qad ǧādaltanā fa-ˈakṯarta ǧidālanā fa-ˈtinā bi-mā taʿidunā ˈin kunta mina ṣ-ṣādiqīna
They said, ‘O Noah, you have disputed with us already, and you have disputed with us exceedingly. Now bring us what you threaten us with, should you be truthful.
قَالَ إِنَّمَا يَأْتِيكُم بِهِ ٱللَّهُ إِن شَآءَ وَمَآ أَنتُم بِمُعْجِزِينَ
qāla ˈinnamā yaˈtīkum bihi llāhu ˈin šāˈa wa-mā ˈantum bi-muʿǧizīna
He said, ‘Allah will indeed bring it on you if He wishes, and you cannot frustrate [Him].
وَلَا يَنفَعُكُمْ نُصْحِىٓ إِنْ أَرَدتُّ أَنْ أَنصَحَ لَكُمْ إِن كَانَ ٱللَّهُ يُرِيدُ أَن يُغْوِيَكُمْ ۚ هُوَ رَبُّكُمْ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ
wa-lā yanfaʿukum nuṣḥī ˈin ˈaradtu ˈan ˈanṣaḥa lakum ˈin kāna llāhu yurīdu ˈan yuġwiyakum huwa rabbukum wa-ˈilayhi turǧaʿūna
My exhorting will not benefit you, much as I may seek to exhort you, if Allah desires to consign you to perversity. He is your Lord, and to Him you shall be brought back.’
أَمْ يَقُولُونَ ٱفْتَرَىٰهُ ۖ قُلْ إِنِ ٱفْتَرَيْتُهُۥ فَعَلَىَّ إِجْرَامِى وَأَنَا۠ بَرِىٓءٌ مِّمَّا تُجْرِمُونَ
ˈam yaqūlūna ftarāhu qul ˈini ftaraytuhū fa-ʿalayya ˈiǧrāmī wa-ˈana barīˈun mimmā tuǧrimūna
Do they say, ‘He has fabricated it?’ Say, ‘Should I have fabricated it, then my guilt will be upon me, and I am absolved of your guilty conduct.’
وَأُوحِىَ إِلَىٰ نُوحٍ أَنَّهُۥ لَن يُؤْمِنَ مِن قَوْمِكَ إِلَّا مَن قَدْ ءَامَنَ فَلَا تَبْتَئِسْ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْعَلُونَ
wa-ˈūḥiya ˈilā nūḥin ˈannahū lan yuˈmina min qawmika ˈillā man qad ˈāmana fa-lā tabtaˈis bi-mā kānū yafʿalūna
It was revealed to Noah: ‘None of your people will believe except those who already have faith; so do not sorrow for what they used to do.
وَٱصْنَعِ ٱلْفُلْكَ بِأَعْيُنِنَا وَوَحْيِنَا وَلَا تُخَـٰطِبْنِى فِى ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّهُم مُّغْرَقُونَ
wa-ṣnaʿi l-fulka bi-ˈaʿyuninā wa-waḥyinā wa-lā tuḫāṭibnī fī llaḏīna ẓalamū ˈinnahum muġraqūna
Build the ark before Our eyes and by Our revelation, and do not plead with Me for those who are wrongdoers: they shall indeed be drowned.’
وَيَصْنَعُ ٱلْفُلْكَ وَكُلَّمَا مَرَّ عَلَيْهِ مَلَأٌ مِّن قَوْمِهِۦ سَخِرُوا۟ مِنْهُ ۚ قَالَ إِن تَسْخَرُوا۟ مِنَّا فَإِنَّا نَسْخَرُ مِنكُمْ كَمَا تَسْخَرُونَ
wa-yaṣnaʿu l-fulka wa-kullamā marra ʿalayhi malaˈun min qawmihī saḫirū minhu qāla ˈin tasḫarū minnā fa-ˈinnā nasḫaru minkum ka-mā tasḫarūna
As he was building the ark, whenever the elders of his people passed by him, they would ridicule him. He said, ‘If you ridicule us [today], we shall ridicule you [tomorrow] just as you ridicule us [now].
فَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ مَن يَأْتِيهِ عَذَابٌ يُخْزِيهِ وَيَحِلُّ عَلَيْهِ عَذَابٌ مُّقِيمٌ
fa-sawfa taʿlamūna man yaˈtīhi ʿaḏābun yuḫzīhi wa-yaḥillu ʿalayhi ʿaḏābun muqīmun
Soon you will know whom a disgraceful punishment will overtake and on whom a lasting punishment will descend.’
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءَ أَمْرُنَا وَفَارَ ٱلتَّنُّورُ قُلْنَا ٱحْمِلْ فِيهَا مِن كُلٍّ زَوْجَيْنِ ٱثْنَيْنِ وَأَهْلَكَ إِلَّا مَن سَبَقَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلْقَوْلُ وَمَنْ ءَامَنَ ۚ وَمَآ ءَامَنَ مَعَهُۥٓ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ
ḥattā ˈiḏā ǧāˈa ˈamrunā wa-fāra t-tannūru qulnā ḥmil fīhā min kullin zawǧayni ṯnayni wa-ˈahlaka ˈillā man sabaqa ʿalayhi l-qawlu wa-man ˈāmana wa-mā ˈāmana maʿahū ˈillā qalīlun
When Our edict came and the oven gushed [a stream of water], We said, ‘Carry in it a pair of every kind [of animal], along with your family—except those [of them] against whom the edict has already been given—and those who have faith.’ And none believed with him except a few.
وَقَالَ ٱرْكَبُوا۟ فِيهَا بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ مَجْر۪ىٰهَا وَمُرْسَىٰهَآ ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّى لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
wa-qāla rkabū fīhā bi-smi llāhi maǧrāhā wa-mursāhā ˈinna rabbī la-ġafūrun raḥīmun
He said, ‘Board it: In the Name of Allah it shall set sail and cast anchor. Indeed my Lord is all-forgiving, all-merciful.’
وَهِىَ تَجْرِى بِهِمْ فِى مَوْجٍ كَٱلْجِبَالِ وَنَادَىٰ نُوحٌ ٱبْنَهُۥ وَكَانَ فِى مَعْزِلٍ يَـٰبُنَىَّ ٱرْكَب مَّعَنَا وَلَا تَكُن مَّعَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
wa-hiya taǧrī bihim fī mawǧin ka-l-ǧibāli wa-nādā nūḥun-i bnahū wa-kāna fī maʿzilin yā-bunayya rkab maʿanā wa-lā takun maʿa l-kāfirīna
And it sailed along with them amid waves [rising] like mountains. Noah called out to his son, who stood aloof, ‘O my son! ‘Board with us, and do not be with the faithless!’
قَالَ سَـَٔاوِىٓ إِلَىٰ جَبَلٍ يَعْصِمُنِى مِنَ ٱلْمَآءِ ۚ قَالَ لَا عَاصِمَ ٱلْيَوْمَ مِنْ أَمْرِ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَ ۚ وَحَالَ بَيْنَهُمَا ٱلْمَوْجُ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُغْرَقِينَ
qāla sa-ˈāwī ˈilā ǧabalin yaʿṣimunī mina l-māˈi qāla lā ʿāṣima l-yawma min ˈamri llāhi ˈillā man raḥima wa-ḥāla baynahumā l-mawǧu fa-kāna mina l-muġraqīna
He said, ‘I shall take refuge on a mountain; it will protect me from the flood.’ He said, ‘There is none today who can protect from Allah’s edict, except someone upon whom He has mercy.’ Then the waves came between them, and he was among those who were drowned.
وَقِيلَ يَـٰٓأَرْضُ ٱبْلَعِى مَآءَكِ وَيَـٰسَمَآءُ أَقْلِعِى وَغِيضَ ٱلْمَآءُ وَقُضِىَ ٱلْأَمْرُ وَٱسْتَوَتْ عَلَى ٱلْجُودِىِّ ۖ وَقِيلَ بُعْدًا لِّلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
wa-qīla yā-ˈarḍu blaʿī māˈaki wa-yā-samāˈu ˈaqliʿī wa-ġīḍa l-māˈu wa-quḍiya l-ˈamru wa-stawat ʿalā l-ǧūdiyyi wa-qīla buʿdan li-l-qawmi ẓ-ẓālimīna
Then it was said, ‘O earth, swallow your water! O sky, leave off!’ The waters receded; the edict was carried out, and it settled on [Mount] Judi. Then it was said, ‘Away with the wrongdoing lot!’
وَنَادَىٰ نُوحٌ رَّبَّهُۥ فَقَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ ٱبْنِى مِنْ أَهْلِى وَإِنَّ وَعْدَكَ ٱلْحَقُّ وَأَنتَ أَحْكَمُ ٱلْحَـٰكِمِينَ
wa-nādā nūḥun rabbahū fa-qāla rabbi ˈinna bnī min ˈahlī wa-ˈinna waʿdaka l-ḥaqqu wa-ˈanta ˈaḥkamu l-ḥākimīna
Noah called out to his Lord, and said, ‘My Lord! My son is indeed from my family. Your promise is indeed true, and You are the fairest of all judges.’
قَالَ يَـٰنُوحُ إِنَّهُۥ لَيْسَ مِنْ أَهْلِكَ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ عَمَلٌ غَيْرُ صَـٰلِحٍ ۖ فَلَا تَسْـَٔلْنِ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ ۖ إِنِّىٓ أَعِظُكَ أَن تَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ
qāla yā-nūḥu ˈinnahū laysa min ˈahlika ˈinnahū ʿamalun ġayru ṣāliḥin fa-lā tasˈalni mā laysa laka bihī ʿilmun ˈinnī ˈaʿiẓuka ˈan takūna mina l-ǧāhilīna
Said He, ‘O Noah! Indeed, He is not of your family. Indeed, he is [personification of] unrighteous conduct. So do not ask Me [something] of which you have no knowledge. I advise you lest you should be among the ignorant.’
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّىٓ أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَسْـَٔلَكَ مَا لَيْسَ لِى بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ ۖ وَإِلَّا تَغْفِرْ لِى وَتَرْحَمْنِىٓ أَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ
qāla rabbi ˈinnī ˈaʿūḏu bika ˈan ˈasˈalaka mā laysa lī bihī ʿilmun wa-ˈillā taġfir lī wa-tarḥamnī ˈakun mina l-ḫāsirīna
He said, ‘My Lord! I seek Your protection lest I should ask You something of which I have no knowledge. If You do not forgive me and have mercy upon me I shall be among the losers.’
قِيلَ يَـٰنُوحُ ٱهْبِطْ بِسَلَـٰمٍ مِّنَّا وَبَرَكَـٰتٍ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰٓ أُمَمٍ مِّمَّن مَّعَكَ ۚ وَأُمَمٌ سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ ثُمَّ يَمَسُّهُم مِّنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
qīla yā-nūḥu hbiṭ bi-salāmin minnā wa-barakātin ʿalayka wa-ʿalā ˈumamin mimman maʿaka wa-ˈumamun sa-numattiʿuhum ṯumma yamassuhum minnā ʿaḏābun ˈalīmun
It was said, ‘O Noah! Disembark in peace from Us and with [Our] blessings upon you and upon nations [to descend] from those who are with you, and nations whom We shall provide for, then a painful punishment from Us shall befall them.’
تِلْكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهَآ إِلَيْكَ ۖ مَا كُنتَ تَعْلَمُهَآ أَنتَ وَلَا قَوْمُكَ مِن قَبْلِ هَـٰذَا ۖ فَٱصْبِرْ ۖ إِنَّ ٱلْعَـٰقِبَةَ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
tilka min ˈanbāˈi l-ġaybi nūḥīhā ˈilayka mā kunta taʿlamuhā ˈanta wa-lā qawmuka min qabli hāḏā fa-ṣbir ˈinna l-ʿāqibata li-l-muttaqīna
These are accounts of the Unseen, which We reveal to you. Neither you nor your people used to know them before this. So be patient. Indeed the outcome will be in favour of the Godwary.
وَإِلَىٰ عَادٍ أَخَاهُمْ هُودًا ۚ قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَـٰهٍ غَيْرُهُۥٓ ۖ إِنْ أَنتُمْ إِلَّا مُفْتَرُونَ
wa-ˈilā ʿādin ˈaḫāhum hūdan qāla yā-qawmi ʿbudū llāha mā lakum min ˈilāhin ġayruhū ˈin ˈantum ˈillā muftarūna
And to ‘Ad [We sent] Hud, their brother. He said, ‘O my people! Worship Allah. You have no other god besides Him: you merely fabricate [the deities that you worship].
يَـٰقَوْمِ لَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَجْرًا ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلَّذِى فَطَرَنِىٓ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ
yā-qawmi lā ˈasˈalukum ʿalayhi ˈaǧran ˈin ˈaǧriya ˈillā ʿalā llaḏī faṭaranī ˈa-fa-lā taʿqilūna
‘O my people! I do not ask you any reward for it. My reward lies only with Him who originated me. Do you not exercise your reason?
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِ يُرْسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَارًا وَيَزِدْكُمْ قُوَّةً إِلَىٰ قُوَّتِكُمْ وَلَا تَتَوَلَّوْا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ
wa-yā-qawmi staġfirū rabbakum ṯumma tūbū ˈilayhi yursili s-samāˈa ʿalaykum midrāran wa-yazidkum quwwatan ˈilā quwwatikum wa-lā tatawallaw muǧrimīna
‘O my people! Plead with your Lord for forgiveness, then turn to Him penitently: He will send copious rains for you from the sky, and add power to your [present] power. So do not turn your backs [on Him] as guilty ones.’
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰهُودُ مَا جِئْتَنَا بِبَيِّنَةٍ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِتَارِكِىٓ ءَالِهَتِنَا عَن قَوْلِكَ وَمَا نَحْنُ لَكَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ
qālū yā-hūdu mā ǧiˈtanā bi-bayyinatin wa-mā naḥnu bi-tārikī ˈālihatinā ʿan qawlika wa-mā naḥnu laka bi-muˈminīna
They said, ‘O Hud, you have not brought us any manifest proof. We are not going to abandon our gods for what you say, and we are not going to believe you.
إِن نَّقُولُ إِلَّا ٱعْتَرَىٰكَ بَعْضُ ءَالِهَتِنَا بِسُوٓءٍ ۗ قَالَ إِنِّىٓ أُشْهِدُ ٱللَّهَ وَٱشْهَدُوٓا۟ أَنِّى بَرِىٓءٌ مِّمَّا تُشْرِكُونَ
ˈin naqūlu ˈillā ʿtarāka baʿḍu ˈālihatinā bi-sūˈin qāla ˈinnī ˈušhidu llāha wa-šhadū ˈannī barīˈun mimmā tušrikūna
All we say is that some of our gods have visited you with some evil.’ He said, ‘I call Allah to witness—and you too be [my] witnesses—that I repudiate what you take as [His] partners
مِن دُونِهِۦ ۖ فَكِيدُونِى جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ لَا تُنظِرُونِ
min dūnihī fa-kīdūnī ǧamīʿan ṯumma lā tunẓirūni
besides Him. Now try out your stratagems against me, together, without granting me any respite.
إِنِّى تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ رَبِّى وَرَبِّكُم ۚ مَّا مِن دَآبَّةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ ءَاخِذٌۢ بِنَاصِيَتِهَآ ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّى عَلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ
ˈinnī tawakkaltu ʿalā llāhi rabbī wa-rabbikum mā min dābbatin ˈillā huwa ˈāḫiḏun bi-nāṣiyatihā ˈinna rabbī ʿalā ṣirāṭin mustaqīmin
Indeed I have put my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord. There is no living being but He holds it by its forelock. Indeed my Lord is on a straight path.
فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُم مَّآ أُرْسِلْتُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَيْكُمْ ۚ وَيَسْتَخْلِفُ رَبِّى قَوْمًا غَيْرَكُمْ وَلَا تَضُرُّونَهُۥ شَيْـًٔا ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّى عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ حَفِيظٌ
fa-ˈin tawallaw fa-qad ˈablaġtukum mā ˈursiltu bihī ˈilaykum wa-yastaḫlifu rabbī qawman ġayrakum wa-lā taḍurrūnahū šayˈan ˈinna rabbī ʿalā kulli šayˈin ḥafīẓun
But if you turn your backs [on me], then [know that] I have communicated to you whatever I was sent to you with. My Lord will make another people succeed you, and you will not hurt Allah in the least. Indeed my Lord is watchful over all things.’
وَلَمَّا جَآءَ أَمْرُنَا نَجَّيْنَا هُودًا وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ بِرَحْمَةٍ مِّنَّا وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُم مِّنْ عَذَابٍ غَلِيظٍ
wa-lammā ǧāˈa ˈamrunā naǧǧaynā hūdan wa-llaḏīna ˈāmanū maʿahū bi-raḥmatin minnā wa-naǧǧaynāhum min ʿaḏābin ġalīẓin
When Our edict came, We delivered Hud and the faithful who were with him, by a mercy from Us, and We delivered them from a harsh punishment.
وَتِلْكَ عَادٌ ۖ جَحَدُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَعَصَوْا۟ رُسُلَهُۥ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَ كُلِّ جَبَّارٍ عَنِيدٍ
wa-tilka ʿādun ǧaḥadū bi-ˈāyāti rabbihim wa-ʿaṣaw rusulahū wa-ttabaʿū ˈamra kulli ǧabbārin ʿanīdin
Such were [the people of] Ad: they impugned the signs of their Lord and disobeyed His apostles, and followed the dictates of every obstinate tyrant.
وَأُتْبِعُوا۟ فِى هَـٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنْيَا لَعْنَةً وَيَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۗ أَلَآ إِنَّ عَادًا كَفَرُوا۟ رَبَّهُمْ ۗ أَلَا بُعْدًا لِّعَادٍ قَوْمِ هُودٍ
wa-ˈutbiʿū fī hāḏihi d-dunyā laʿnatan wa-yawma l-qiyāmati ˈa-lā ˈinna ʿādan kafarū rabbahum ˈa-lā buʿdan li-ˈādin qawmi hūdin
So they were pursued by a curse in this world and on the Day of Resurrection. Behold! ‘Ad indeed defied their Lord. Now, away with ‘Ad, the people of Hud!
وَإِلَىٰ ثَمُودَ أَخَاهُمْ صَـٰلِحًا ۚ قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَـٰهٍ غَيْرُهُۥ ۖ هُوَ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱسْتَعْمَرَكُمْ فِيهَا فَٱسْتَغْفِرُوهُ ثُمَّ تُوبُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّى قَرِيبٌ مُّجِيبٌ
wa-ˈilā ṯamūda ˈaḫāhum ṣāliḥan qāla yā-qawmi ʿbudū llāha mā lakum min ˈilāhin ġayruhū huwa ˈanšaˈakum mina l-ˈarḍi wa-staʿmarakum fīhā fa-staġfirūhu ṯumma tūbū ˈilayhi ˈinna rabbī qarībun muǧībun
And to Thamud [We sent] Salih, their brother. He said, ‘O my people! Worship Allah. You have no other god besides Him. He brought you forth from the earth and made it your habitation. So plead with Him for forgiveness, then turn to Him penitently. My Lord is indeed nearmost [and] responsive.’
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰصَـٰلِحُ قَدْ كُنتَ فِينَا مَرْجُوًّا قَبْلَ هَـٰذَآ ۖ أَتَنْهَىٰنَآ أَن نَّعْبُدَ مَا يَعْبُدُ ءَابَآؤُنَا وَإِنَّنَا لَفِى شَكٍّ مِّمَّا تَدْعُونَآ إِلَيْهِ مُرِيبٍ
qālū yā-ṣāliḥu qad kunta fīnā marǧuwwan qabla hāḏā ˈa-tanhānā ˈan naʿbuda mā yaʿbudu ˈābāˈunā wa-ˈinnanā la-fī šakkin mimmā tadʿūnā ˈilayhi murībin
They said, ‘O Salih! You were a source of hope to us before this. Do you forbid us to worship what our fathers have been worshiping? Indeed we have grave doubts concerning that to which you invite us.’
قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ أَرَءَيْتُمْ إِن كُنتُ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّى وَءَاتَىٰنِى مِنْهُ رَحْمَةً فَمَن يَنصُرُنِى مِنَ ٱللَّهِ إِنْ عَصَيْتُهُۥ ۖ فَمَا تَزِيدُونَنِى غَيْرَ تَخْسِيرٍ
qāla yā-qawmi ˈa-raˈaytum ˈin kuntu ʿalā bayyinatin min rabbī wa-ˈātānī minhu raḥmatan fa-man yanṣurunī mina llāhi ˈin ʿaṣaytuhū fa-mā tazīdūnanī ġayra taḫsīrin
He said, ‘O my people! Tell me, should I stand on a manifest proof from my Lord, and He has granted me His own mercy, who will protect me from Allah should I disobey Him? For then you will increase me in nothing but loss.
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةُ ٱللَّهِ لَكُمْ ءَايَةً فَذَرُوهَا تَأْكُلْ فِىٓ أَرْضِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوٓءٍ فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ عَذَابٌ قَرِيبٌ
wa-yā-qawmi hāḏihī nāqatu llāhi lakum ˈāyatan fa-ḏarūhā taˈkul fī ˈarḍi llāhi wa-lā tamassūhā bi-sūˈin fa-yaˈḫuḏakum ʿaḏābun qarībun
O my people! This she-camel of Allah is a sign for you. Let her graze [freely] in Allah’s land, and do not cause her any harm, for then you shall be seized by a prompt punishment.’
فَعَقَرُوهَا فَقَالَ تَمَتَّعُوا۟ فِى دَارِكُمْ ثَلَـٰثَةَ أَيَّامٍ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ وَعْدٌ غَيْرُ مَكْذُوبٍ
fa-ʿaqarūhā fa-qāla tamattaʿū fī dārikum ṯalāṯata ˈayyāmin ḏālika waʿdun ġayru makḏūbin
But they hamstrung her, whereupon he said, ‘Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days: that is a promise not to be belied!’
فَلَمَّا جَآءَ أَمْرُنَا نَجَّيْنَا صَـٰلِحًا وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ بِرَحْمَةٍ مِّنَّا وَمِنْ خِزْىِ يَوْمِئِذٍ ۗ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلْقَوِىُّ ٱلْعَزِيزُ
fa-lammā ǧāˈa ˈamrunā naǧǧaynā ṣāliḥan wa-llaḏīna ˈāmanū maʿahū bi-raḥmatin minnā wa-min ḫizyi yawmiˈiḏin ˈinna rabbaka huwa l-qawiyyu l-ʿazīzu
So when Our edict came, We delivered Salih and the faithful who were with him by a mercy from Us and from the [punishment and] disgrace of that day. Your Lord is indeed the All-strong, the All-mighty.
وَأَخَذَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ فِى دِيَـٰرِهِمْ جَـٰثِمِينَ
wa-ˈaḫaḏa llaḏīna ẓalamū ṣ-ṣayḥatu fa-ˈaṣbaḥū fī diyārihim ǧāṯimīna
The Cry seized those who were wrongdoers, and they lay lifeless prostrate in their homes,
كَأَن لَّمْ يَغْنَوْا۟ فِيهَآ ۗ أَلَآ إِنَّ ثَمُودَا۟ كَفَرُوا۟ رَبَّهُمْ ۗ أَلَا بُعْدًا لِّثَمُودَ
ka-ˈan lam yaġnaw fīhā ˈa-lā ˈinna ṯamūda kafarū rabbahum ˈa-lā buʿdan li-ṯamūda
as if they had never lived there. Behold! Thamud indeed defied their Lord. Now, away with Thamud!
وَلَقَدْ جَآءَتْ رُسُلُنَآ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ بِٱلْبُشْرَىٰ قَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمًا ۖ قَالَ سَلَـٰمٌ ۖ فَمَا لَبِثَ أَن جَآءَ بِعِجْلٍ حَنِيذٍ
wa-la-qad ǧāˈat rusulunā ˈibrāhīma bi-l-bušrā qālū salāman qāla salāmun fa-mā labiṯa ˈan ǧāˈa bi-ʿiǧlin ḥanīḏin
Certainly Our messengers came to Abraham with the good news, and said, ‘Peace!’ ‘Peace!’ He replied. Presently he brought [for them] a roasted calf.
فَلَمَّا رَءَآ أَيْدِيَهُمْ لَا تَصِلُ إِلَيْهِ نَكِرَهُمْ وَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً ۚ قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفْ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمِ لُوطٍ
fa-lammā raˈā ˈaydiyahum lā taṣilu ˈilayhi nakirahum wa-ˈawǧasa minhum ḫīfatan qālū lā taḫaf ˈinnā ˈursilnā ˈilā qawmi lūṭin
But when he saw their hands not reaching for it, he took them amiss and felt a fear of them. They said, ‘Do not be afraid. We have been sent to the people of Lot.’
وَٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ قَآئِمَةٌ فَضَحِكَتْ فَبَشَّرْنَـٰهَا بِإِسْحَـٰقَ وَمِن وَرَآءِ إِسْحَـٰقَ يَعْقُوبَ
wa-mraˈatuhū qāˈimatun fa-ḍaḥikat fa-baššarnāhā bi-ˈisḥāqa wa-min warāˈi ˈisḥāqa yaʿqūba
His wife, standing by, laughed as We gave her the good news of [the birth of] Isaac, and of Jacob, after Isaac.
قَالَتْ يَـٰوَيْلَتَىٰٓ ءَأَلِدُ وَأَنَا۠ عَجُوزٌ وَهَـٰذَا بَعْلِى شَيْخًا ۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَشَىْءٌ عَجِيبٌ
qālat yā-waylatā ˈa-ˈalidu wa-ˈana ʿaǧūzun wa-hāḏā baʿlī šayḫan ˈinna hāḏā la-šayˈun ʿaǧībun
She said, ‘Oh, my! Shall I, an old woman, bear [children], and [while] this husband of mine is an old man?! That is indeed an odd thing!’
قَالُوٓا۟ أَتَعْجَبِينَ مِنْ أَمْرِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ رَحْمَتُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَـٰتُهُۥ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ ٱلْبَيْتِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ حَمِيدٌ مَّجِيدٌ
qālū ˈa-taʿǧabīna min ˈamri llāhi raḥmatu llāhi wa-barakātuhū ʿalaykum ˈahla l-bayti ˈinnahū ḥamīdun maǧīdun
They said, ‘Are you amazed at Allah’s dispensation? [That is] Allah’s mercy and His blessings upon you, members of the household. Indeed He is all-laudable, all-glorious.’
فَلَمَّا ذَهَبَ عَنْ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلرَّوْعُ وَجَآءَتْهُ ٱلْبُشْرَىٰ يُجَـٰدِلُنَا فِى قَوْمِ لُوطٍ
fa-lammā ḏahaba ʿan ˈibrāhīma r-rawʿu wa-ǧāˈathu l-bušrā yuǧādilunā fī qawmi lūṭin
So when the awe had left Abraham and the good news had reached him, he pleaded with Us concerning the people of Lot.
إِنَّ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ لَحَلِيمٌ أَوَّٰهٌ مُّنِيبٌ
ˈinna ˈibrāhīma la-ḥalīmun ˈawwāhun munībun
Abraham was indeed most forbearing, plaintive, [and] penitent.
يَـٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ أَعْرِضْ عَنْ هَـٰذَآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ قَدْ جَآءَ أَمْرُ رَبِّكَ ۖ وَإِنَّهُمْ ءَاتِيهِمْ عَذَابٌ غَيْرُ مَرْدُودٍ
yā-ˈibrāhīmu ˈaʿriḍ ʿan hāḏā ˈinnahū qad ǧāˈa ˈamru rabbika wa-ˈinnahum ˈātīhim ʿaḏābun ġayru mardūdin
‘O Abraham, let this matter alone! Your Lord’s edict has certainly come, and an irrevocable punishment shall overtake them.’
وَلَمَّا جَآءَتْ رُسُلُنَا لُوطًا سِىٓءَ بِهِمْ وَضَاقَ بِهِمْ ذَرْعًا وَقَالَ هَـٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَصِيبٌ
wa-lammā ǧāˈat rusulunā lūṭan sīˈa bihim wa-ḍāqa bihim ḏarʿan wa-qāla hāḏā yawmun ʿaṣībun
When Our messengers came to Lot, he was distressed on their account and in a predicament for their sake, and he said, ‘This is a terrible day!’
وَجَآءَهُۥ قَوْمُهُۥ يُهْرَعُونَ إِلَيْهِ وَمِن قَبْلُ كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ ۚ قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ بَنَاتِى هُنَّ أَطْهَرُ لَكُمْ ۖ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُخْزُونِ فِى ضَيْفِىٓ ۖ أَلَيْسَ مِنكُمْ رَجُلٌ رَّشِيدٌ
wa-ǧāˈahū qawmuhū yuhraʿūna ˈilayhi wa-min qablu kānū yaʿmalūna s-sayyiˈāti qāla yā-qawmi hāˈulāˈi banātī hunna ˈaṭharu lakum fa-ttaqū llāha wa-lā tuḫzūni fī ḍayfī ˈa-laysa minkum raǧulun rašīdun
Then his people came running toward him, and they had been committing vices aforetime. He said, ‘O my people, these are my daughters: they are purer for you. Be wary of Allah and do not humiliate me with regard to my guests. Is there not a right-minded man among you?’
قَالُوا۟ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَا لَنَا فِى بَنَاتِكَ مِنْ حَقٍّ وَإِنَّكَ لَتَعْلَمُ مَا نُرِيدُ
qālū la-qad ʿalimta mā lanā fī banātika min ḥaqqin wa-ˈinnaka la-taʿlamu mā nurīdu
They said, ‘You certainly know that we have no interest in your daughters, and indeed you know what we want.’
قَالَ لَوْ أَنَّ لِى بِكُمْ قُوَّةً أَوْ ءَاوِىٓ إِلَىٰ رُكْنٍ شَدِيدٍ
qāla law ˈanna lī bikum quwwatan ˈaw ˈāwī ˈilā ruknin šadīdin
He said, ‘If only I had the power to deter you, or could take refuge in a mighty support!’
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰلُوطُ إِنَّا رُسُلُ رَبِّكَ لَن يَصِلُوٓا۟ إِلَيْكَ ۖ فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنكُمْ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَكَ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ مُصِيبُهَا مَآ أَصَابَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ مَوْعِدَهُمُ ٱلصُّبْحُ ۚ أَلَيْسَ ٱلصُّبْحُ بِقَرِيبٍ
qālū yā-lūṭu ˈinnā rusulu rabbika lan yaṣilū ˈilayka fa-ˈasri bi-ˈahlika bi-qiṭʿin mina l-layli wa-lā yaltafit minkum ˈaḥadun ˈillā mraˈataka ˈinnahū muṣībuhā mā ˈaṣābahum ˈinna mawʿidahumu ṣ-ṣubḥu ˈa-laysa ṣ-ṣubḥu bi-qarībin
They said, ‘O Lot, we are messengers of your Lord. They will never get at you. Set out with your family in a watch of the night; and none of you shall turn round, except your wife; indeed she will be struck by what strikes them. Indeed their tryst is the dawn. Is not the dawn [already] near?’
فَلَمَّا جَآءَ أَمْرُنَا جَعَلْنَا عَـٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهَا حِجَارَةً مِّن سِجِّيلٍ مَّنضُودٍ
fa-lammā ǧāˈa ˈamrunā ǧaʿalnā ʿāliyahā sāfilahā wa-ˈamṭarnā ʿalayhā ḥiǧāratan min siǧǧīlin manḍūdin
So when Our edict came, We made its topmost part its nethermost, and We rained on it stones of laminar shale,
مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ ۖ وَمَا هِىَ مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ بِبَعِيدٍ
musawwamatan ʿinda rabbika wa-mā hiya mina ẓ-ẓālimīna bi-baʿīdin
sent in from your Lord [for the profligate], never far from the wrongdoers.
وَإِلَىٰ مَدْيَنَ أَخَاهُمْ شُعَيْبًا ۚ قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَـٰهٍ غَيْرُهُۥ ۖ وَلَا تَنقُصُوا۟ ٱلْمِكْيَالَ وَٱلْمِيزَانَ ۚ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰكُم بِخَيْرٍ وَإِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ مُّحِيطٍ
wa-ˈilā madyana ˈaḫāhum šuʿayban qāla yā-qawmi ʿbudū llāha mā lakum min ˈilāhin ġayruhū wa-lā tanquṣū l-mikyāla wa-l-mīzāna ˈinnī ˈarākum bi-ḫayrin wa-ˈinnī ˈaḫāfu ʿalaykum ʿaḏāba yawmin muḥīṭin
And to Midian [We sent] Shu‘ayb, their brother. He said, ‘O my people! Worship Allah. You have no other god besides Him. Do not diminish the measure or the balance. Indeed I see that you are faring well, but I fear for you the punishment of an all-embracing day.’
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ أَوْفُوا۟ ٱلْمِكْيَالَ وَٱلْمِيزَانَ بِٱلْقِسْطِ ۖ وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشْيَآءَهُمْ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ
wa-yā-qawmi ˈawfū l-mikyāla wa-l-mīzāna bi-l-qisṭi wa-lā tabḫasū n-nāsa ˈašyāˈahum wa-lā taʿṯaw fī l-ˈarḍi mufsidīna
‘O my people! Observe fully the measure and the balance, with justice, and do not cheat the people of their goods, and do not act wickedly on the earth, causing corruption.’
بَقِيَّتُ ٱللَّهِ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ ۚ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ عَلَيْكُم بِحَفِيظٍ
baqiyyatu llāhi ḫayrun lakum ˈin kuntum muˈminīna wa-mā ˈana ʿalaykum bi-ḥafīẓin
‘What remains of Allah’s provision is better for you, should you be faithful, and I am not a keeper over you.’
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰشُعَيْبُ أَصَلَوٰتُكَ تَأْمُرُكَ أَن نَّتْرُكَ مَا يَعْبُدُ ءَابَآؤُنَآ أَوْ أَن نَّفْعَلَ فِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِنَا مَا نَشَـٰٓؤُا۟ ۖ إِنَّكَ لَأَنتَ ٱلْحَلِيمُ ٱلرَّشِيدُ
qālū yā-šuʿaybu ˈa-ṣalātuka taˈmuruka ˈan natruka mā yaʿbudu ˈābāˈunā ˈaw ˈan nafʿala fī ˈamwālinā mā našāˈu ˈinnaka la-ˈanta l-ḥalīmu r-rašīdu
They said, ‘O Shu‘ayb, does your worship require that we abandon what our fathers have been worshiping, or that we should not do with our wealth whatever we wish? You are indeed [a] gentle and sensible [person].’
قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ أَرَءَيْتُمْ إِن كُنتُ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّى وَرَزَقَنِى مِنْهُ رِزْقًا حَسَنًا ۚ وَمَآ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُخَالِفَكُمْ إِلَىٰ مَآ أَنْهَىٰكُمْ عَنْهُ ۚ إِنْ أُرِيدُ إِلَّا ٱلْإِصْلَـٰحَ مَا ٱسْتَطَعْتُ ۚ وَمَا تَوْفِيقِىٓ إِلَّا بِٱللَّهِ ۚ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَإِلَيْهِ أُنِيبُ
qāla yā-qawmi ˈa-raˈaytum ˈin kuntu ʿalā bayyinatin min rabbī wa-razaqanī minhu rizqan ḥasanan wa-mā ˈurīdu ˈan ˈuḫālifakum ˈilā mā ˈanhākum ʿanhu ˈin ˈurīdu ˈillā l-ˈiṣlāḥa mā staṭaʿtu wa-mā tawfīqī ˈillā bi-llāhi ʿalayhi tawakkaltu wa-ˈilayhi ˈunību
He said, ‘O my people! Have you considered, should I stand on a manifest proof from my Lord, who has provided me a good provision from Himself? I do not wish to oppose you by what I forbid you. I only desire to put things in order, as far as I can, and my success lies only with Allah: in Him I have put my trust, and to Him I turn penitently.
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ لَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شِقَاقِىٓ أَن يُصِيبَكُم مِّثْلُ مَآ أَصَابَ قَوْمَ نُوحٍ أَوْ قَوْمَ هُودٍ أَوْ قَوْمَ صَـٰلِحٍ ۚ وَمَا قَوْمُ لُوطٍ مِّنكُم بِبَعِيدٍ
wa-yā-qawmi lā yaǧrimannakum šiqāqī ˈan yuṣībakum miṯlu mā ˈaṣāba qawma nūḥin ˈaw qawma hūdin ˈaw qawma ṣāliḥin wa-mā qawmu lūṭin minkum bi-baʿīdin
O my people, do not let your defiance toward me lead you to be visited by the like of what was visited on the people of Noah, or the people of Hud, or the people of Salih, and the people of Lot are not distant from you.
وَٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّى رَحِيمٌ وَدُودٌ
wa-staġfirū rabbakum ṯumma tūbū ˈilāyhi ˈinna rabbī raḥīmun wadūdun
Plead with your Lord for forgiveness, then turn to Him penitently. My Lord is indeed all-merciful, all-affectionate.’
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰشُعَيْبُ مَا نَفْقَهُ كَثِيرًا مِّمَّا تَقُولُ وَإِنَّا لَنَرَىٰكَ فِينَا ضَعِيفًا ۖ وَلَوْلَا رَهْطُكَ لَرَجَمْنَـٰكَ ۖ وَمَآ أَنتَ عَلَيْنَا بِعَزِيزٍ
qālū yā-šuʿaybu mā nafqahu kaṯīran mimmā taqūlu wa-ˈinnā la-narāka fīnā ḍaʿīfan wa-law-lā rahṭuka la-raǧamnāka wa-mā ˈanta ʿalaynā bi-ʿazīzin
They said, ‘O Shu‘ayb, we do not understand much of what you say. Indeed we see that you are weak amongst us, and were it not for your tribe, we would have stoned you, and you are not a formidable [challenge] for us.’
قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ أَرَهْطِىٓ أَعَزُّ عَلَيْكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱتَّخَذْتُمُوهُ وَرَآءَكُمْ ظِهْرِيًّا ۖ إِنَّ رَبِّى بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ مُحِيطٌ
qāla yā-qawmi ˈa-rahṭī ˈaʿazzu ʿalaykum mina llāhi wa-ttaḫaḏtumūhu warāˈakum ẓihriyyan ˈinna rabbī bi-mā taʿmalūna muḥīṭun
He said, ‘O my people! Is my tribe more formidable in your sight than Allah, to whom you pay no regard? Indeed my Lord comprehends whatever you do.
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ ٱعْمَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَكَانَتِكُمْ إِنِّى عَـٰمِلٌ ۖ سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ مَن يَأْتِيهِ عَذَابٌ يُخْزِيهِ وَمَنْ هُوَ كَـٰذِبٌ ۖ وَٱرْتَقِبُوٓا۟ إِنِّى مَعَكُمْ رَقِيبٌ
wa-yā-qawmi ʿmalū ʿalā makānatikum ˈinnī ʿāmilun sawfa taʿlamūna man yaˈtīhi ʿaḏābun yuḫzīhi wa-man huwa kāḏibun wa-rtaqibū ˈinnī maʿakum raqībun
O my people! Act according to your ability; I too am acting. Soon you will know who will be overtaken by a punishment that will disgrace him, and who is a liar. So be on the watch; I too will be watching along with you.’
وَلَمَّا جَآءَ أَمْرُنَا نَجَّيْنَا شُعَيْبًا وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ بِرَحْمَةٍ مِّنَّا وَأَخَذَتِ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ فِى دِيَـٰرِهِمْ جَـٰثِمِينَ
wa-lammā ǧāˈa ˈamrunā naǧǧaynā šuʿayban wa-llaḏīna ˈāmanū maʿahū bi-raḥmatin minnā wa-ˈaḫaḏati llaḏīna ẓalamū ṣ-ṣayḥatu fa-ˈaṣbaḥū fī diyārihim ǧāṯimīna
When Our edict came, We delivered Shu‘ayb and the faithful who were with him by a mercy from Us. And the Cry seized those who were wrongdoers, whereat they lay lifeless prostrate in their homes,
كَأَن لَّمْ يَغْنَوْا۟ فِيهَآ ۗ أَلَا بُعْدًا لِّمَدْيَنَ كَمَا بَعِدَتْ ثَمُودُ
ka-ˈan lam yaġnaw fīhā ˈa-lā buʿdan li-madyana ka-mā baʿidat ṯamūdu
as if they had never lived there. Behold, away with Midian!—just as Thamud was done away with!
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مُوسَىٰ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَسُلْطَـٰنٍ مُّبِينٍ
wa-la-qad ˈarsalnā mūsā bi-ˈāyātinā wa-sulṭānin mubīnin
Certainly We sent Moses with Our signs and a manifest authority
إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَإِي۟هِۦ فَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَ فِرْعَوْنَ ۖ وَمَآ أَمْرُ فِرْعَوْنَ بِرَشِيدٍ
ˈilā firʿawna wa-malaˈihī fa-ttabaʿū ˈamra firʿawna wa-mā ˈamru firʿawna bi-rašīdin
to Pharaoh and his elite, but they followed Pharaoh’s dictates, and Pharaoh’s dictates were not right-minded.
يَقْدُمُ قَوْمَهُۥ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ فَأَوْرَدَهُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ۖ وَبِئْسَ ٱلْوِرْدُ ٱلْمَوْرُودُ
yaqdumu qawmahū yawma l-qiyāmati fa-ˈawradahumu n-nāra wa-biˈsa l-wirdu l-mawrūdu
On the Day of Resurrection he will lead his people and conduct them into the Fire: an evil goal for the incoming!
وَأُتْبِعُوا۟ فِى هَـٰذِهِۦ لَعْنَةً وَيَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۚ بِئْسَ ٱلرِّفْدُ ٱلْمَرْفُودُ
wa-ˈutbiʿū fī hāḏihī laʿnatan wa-yawma l-qiyāmati biˈsa r-rifdu l-marfūdu
They are pursued by a curse in this [world], as well as on the Day of Resurrection; evil is the award conferred [upon them]!
ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلْقُرَىٰ نَقُصُّهُۥ عَلَيْكَ ۖ مِنْهَا قَآئِمٌ وَحَصِيدٌ
ḏālika min ˈanbāˈi l-qurā naquṣṣuhū ʿalayka minhā qāˈimun wa-ḥaṣīdun
These are from the accounts of the townships, which We recount to you. Of them, there are some that still stand, and some that have been mown down.
وَمَا ظَلَمْنَـٰهُمْ وَلَـٰكِن ظَلَمُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ ۖ فَمَآ أَغْنَتْ عَنْهُمْ ءَالِهَتُهُمُ ٱلَّتِى يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ لَّمَّا جَآءَ أَمْرُ رَبِّكَ ۖ وَمَا زَادُوهُمْ غَيْرَ تَتْبِيبٍ
wa-mā ẓalamnāhum wa-lākin ẓalamū ˈanfusahum fa-mā ˈaġnat ʿanhum ˈālihatuhumu llatī yadʿūna min dūni llāhi min šayˈin lammā ǧāˈa ˈamru rabbika wa-mā zādūhum ġayra tatbībin
We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. When your Lord’s edict came, their gods whom they would invoke besides Allah were of no avail to them in any wise, and they did not increase them in anything but ruin.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَخْذُ رَبِّكَ إِذَآ أَخَذَ ٱلْقُرَىٰ وَهِىَ ظَـٰلِمَةٌ ۚ إِنَّ أَخْذَهُۥٓ أَلِيمٌ شَدِيدٌ
wa-ka-ḏālika ˈaḫḏu rabbika ˈiḏā ˈaḫaḏa l-qurā wa-hiya ẓālimatun ˈinna ˈaḫḏahū ˈalīmun šadīdun
Such is the seizing of your Lord when He seizes the townships that are wrongdoing. Indeed His seizing is painful and severe.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً لِّمَنْ خَافَ عَذَابَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَّجْمُوعٌ لَّهُ ٱلنَّاسُ وَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَّشْهُودٌ
ˈinna fī ḏālika la-ˈāyatan li-man ḫāfa ʿaḏāba l-ˈāḫirati ḏālika yawmun maǧmūʿun lahu n-nāsu wa-ḏālika yawmun mašhūdun
There is indeed a sign in that for those who fear the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a day on which all mankind will be gathered, and it is a day witnessed [by all creatures].
وَمَا نُؤَخِّرُهُۥٓ إِلَّا لِأَجَلٍ مَّعْدُودٍ
wa-mā nuˈaḫḫiruhū ˈillā li-ˈaǧalin maʿdūdin
And We do not defer it but for a determinate term.
يَوْمَ يَأْتِ لَا تَكَلَّمُ نَفْسٌ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِۦ ۚ فَمِنْهُمْ شَقِىٌّ وَسَعِيدٌ
yawma yaˈti lā takallamu nafsun ˈillā bi-ˈiḏnihī fa-minhum šaqiyyun wa-saʿīdun
The day it comes, no one shall speak except by His leave. [On that day,] some of them will be wretched and [some] felicitous.
فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ شَقُوا۟ فَفِى ٱلنَّارِ لَهُمْ فِيهَا زَفِيرٌ وَشَهِيقٌ
fa-ˈammā llaḏīna šaqū fa-fī n-nāri lahum fīhā zafīrun wa-šahīqun
As for the wretched, they shall be in the Fire: their lot therein will be groaning and wailing.
خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا مَا دَامَتِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ رَبُّكَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ فَعَّالٌ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ
ḫālidīna fīhā mā dāmati s-samāwātu wa-l-ˈarḍu ˈillā mā šāˈa rabbuka ˈinna rabbaka faʿʿālun li-mā yurīdu
They shall remain in it for as long as the heavens and the earth endure—except what your Lord may wish; indeed your Lord does whatever He desires.
وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ سُعِدُوا۟ فَفِى ٱلْجَنَّةِ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا مَا دَامَتِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ رَبُّكَ ۖ عَطَآءً غَيْرَ مَجْذُوذٍ
wa-ˈammā llaḏīna suʿidū fa-fī l-ǧannati ḫālidīna fīhā mā dāmati s-samāwātu wa-l-ˈarḍu ˈillā mā šāˈa rabbuka ʿaṭāˈan ġayra maǧḏūḏin
As for the felicitous, they will be in paradise. They will remain in it for as long as the heavens and the earth endure—except what your Lord may wish—an endless bounty.
فَلَا تَكُ فِى مِرْيَةٍ مِّمَّا يَعْبُدُ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ ۚ مَا يَعْبُدُونَ إِلَّا كَمَا يَعْبُدُ ءَابَآؤُهُم مِّن قَبْلُ ۚ وَإِنَّا لَمُوَفُّوهُمْ نَصِيبَهُمْ غَيْرَ مَنقُوصٍ
fa-lā taku fī miryatin mimmā yaʿbudu hāˈulāˈi mā yaʿbudūna ˈillā ka-mā yaʿbudu ˈābāˈuhum min qablu wa-ˈinnā la-muwaffūhum naṣībahum ġayra manqūṣin
So do not be in doubt about what these worship: they worship just as their fathers worshiped before, and We shall surely pay them their full share, undiminished.
وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ فَٱخْتُلِفَ فِيهِ ۚ وَلَوْلَا كَلِمَةٌ سَبَقَتْ مِن رَّبِّكَ لَقُضِىَ بَيْنَهُمْ ۚ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَفِى شَكٍّ مِّنْهُ مُرِيبٍ
wa-la-qad ˈātaynā mūsā l-kitāba fa-ḫtulifa fīhi wa-law-lā kalimatun sabaqat min rabbika la-quḍiya baynahum wa-ˈinnahum la-fī šakkin minhu murībin
Certainly We gave Moses the Book, but differences arose about it, and were it not for a prior decree of your Lord, a decision would have been made between them; indeed they are in grave doubt concerning it.
وَإِنَّ كُلًّا لَّمَّا لَيُوَفِّيَنَّهُمْ رَبُّكَ أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ
wa-ˈinna kullan lammā la-yuwaffiyannahum rabbuka ˈaʿmālahum ˈinnahū bi-mā yaʿmalūna ḫabīrun
Your Lord will indeed recompense everyone fully for their works. Indeed, He is well aware of what they do.
فَٱسْتَقِمْ كَمَآ أُمِرْتَ وَمَن تَابَ مَعَكَ وَلَا تَطْغَوْا۟ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ
fa-staqim ka-mā ˈumirta wa-man tāba maʿaka wa-lā taṭġaw ˈinnahū bi-mā taʿmalūna baṣīrun
So be steadfast, just as you have been commanded—[you] and whoever has turned [to Allah] with you—and do not overstep the bounds. Indeed, He watches what you do.
وَلَا تَرْكَنُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ فَتَمَسَّكُمُ ٱلنَّارُ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِنْ أَوْلِيَآءَ ثُمَّ لَا تُنصَرُونَ
wa-lā tarkanū ˈilā llaḏīna ẓalamū fa-tamassakumu n-nāru wa-mā lakum min dūni llāhi min ˈawliyāˈa ṯumma lā tunṣarūna
Do not incline toward the wrongdoers, lest the Fire should touch you, and you will not have any friend besides Allah; then you will not be helped.
وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ طَرَفَىِ ٱلنَّهَارِ وَزُلَفًا مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلْحَسَنَـٰتِ يُذْهِبْنَ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ذِكْرَىٰ لِلذَّٰكِرِينَ
wa-ˈaqimi ṣ-ṣalāta ṭarafayi n-nahāri wa-zulafan mina l-layli ˈinna l-ḥasanāti yuḏhibna s-sayyiˈāti ḏālika ḏikrā li-ḏ-ḏākirīna
Maintain the prayer at the two ends of the day, and during the early hours of the night. Indeed good deeds efface misdeeds. That is an admonition for the mindful.
وَٱصْبِرْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
wa-ṣbir fa-ˈinna llāha lā yuḍīʿu ˈaǧra l-muḥsinīna
And be patient; indeed Allah does not waste the reward of the virtuous.
فَلَوْلَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْقُرُونِ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ أُو۟لُوا۟ بَقِيَّةٍ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْفَسَادِ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّمَّنْ أَنجَيْنَا مِنْهُمْ ۗ وَٱتَّبَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مَآ أُتْرِفُوا۟ فِيهِ وَكَانُوا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ
fa-law-lā kāna mina l-qurūni min qablikum ˈulū baqiyyatin yanhawna ʿani l-fasādi fī l-ˈarḍi ˈillā qalīlan mimman ˈanǧaynā minhum wa-ttabaʿa llaḏīna ẓalamū mā ˈutrifū fīhi wa-kānū muǧrimīna
Why were there not among the generations before you a remnant [of the wise] who might forbid corruption in the earth, except a few of those whom We delivered from among them? Those who were wrongdoers pursued that in which they had been granted affluence, and they were a guilty lot.
وَمَا كَانَ رَبُّكَ لِيُهْلِكَ ٱلْقُرَىٰ بِظُلْمٍ وَأَهْلُهَا مُصْلِحُونَ
wa-mā kāna rabbuka li-yuhlika l-qurā bi-ẓulmin wa-ˈahluhā muṣliḥūna
Your Lord would never destroy the townships unjustly while their inhabitants were bringing about reform.
وَلَوْ شَآءَ رَبُّكَ لَجَعَلَ ٱلنَّاسَ أُمَّةً وَٰحِدَةً ۖ وَلَا يَزَالُونَ مُخْتَلِفِينَ
wa-law šāˈa rabbuka la-ǧaʿala n-nāsa ˈummatan wāḥidatan wa-lā yazālūna muḫtalifīna
Had your Lord wished, He would have made mankind one community; but they continue to differ,
إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَ رَبُّكَ ۚ وَلِذَٰلِكَ خَلَقَهُمْ ۗ وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَةُ رَبِّكَ لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ
ˈillā man raḥima rabbuka wa-li-ḏālika ḫalaqahum wa-tammat kalimatu rabbika la-ˈamlaˈanna ǧahannama mina l-ǧinnati wa-n-nāsi ˈaǧmaʿīna
except those on whom your Lord has mercy—and that is why He created them—and the word of your Lord has been fulfilled: ‘I will surely fill hell with jinn and humans, all together!’
وَكُلًّا نَّقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلرُّسُلِ مَا نُثَبِّتُ بِهِۦ فُؤَادَكَ ۚ وَجَآءَكَ فِى هَـٰذِهِ ٱلْحَقُّ وَمَوْعِظَةٌ وَذِكْرَىٰ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
wa-kullan naquṣṣu ʿalayka min ˈanbāˈi r-rusuli mā nuṯabbitu bihī fuˈādaka wa-ǧāˈaka fī hāḏihi l-ḥaqqu wa-mawʿiẓatun wa-ḏikrā li-l-muˈminīna
Whatever We relate to you of the accounts of the apostles are those by which We strengthen your heart, and there has come to you in this [surah] the truth and an advice and admonition for the faithful.
وَقُل لِّلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ ٱعْمَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَكَانَتِكُمْ إِنَّا عَـٰمِلُونَ
wa-qul li-llaḏīna lā yuˈminūna ʿmalū ʿalā makānatikum ˈinnā ʿāmilūna
Say to those who do not have faith, ‘Act according to your ability; we too are acting.
وَٱنتَظِرُوٓا۟ إِنَّا مُنتَظِرُونَ
wa-ntaẓirū ˈinnā muntaẓirūna
And wait! We too are waiting.’
وَلِلَّهِ غَيْبُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِلَيْهِ يُرْجَعُ ٱلْأَمْرُ كُلُّهُۥ فَٱعْبُدْهُ وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَيْهِ ۚ وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِغَـٰفِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ
wa-li-llāhi ġaybu s-samāwāti wa-l-ˈarḍi wa-ˈilayhi yurǧaʿu l-ˈamru kulluhū fa-ʿbudhu wa-tawakkal ʿalayhi wa-mā rabbuka bi-ġāfilin ʿammā taʿmalūna
To Allah belongs the Unseen of the heavens and the earth, and to Him all matters are returned. So worship Him and trust in Him. Your Lord is not oblivious of what you do.
