Surah Al-Waaqia

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 56:1

   إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ﴿١﴾

   ˈiḏā waqaʿati l-wāqiʿatu

   When the Imminent [Hour] befalls

2. 56:2

   لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ﴿٢﴾

   laysa li-waqʿatihā kāḏibatun

   —there is no denying that it will befall—

3. 56:3

   خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ﴿٣﴾

   ḫāfiḍatun rāfiʿatun

   [it will be] lowering and exalting.

4. 56:4

   إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّا﴿٤﴾

   ˈiḏā ruǧǧati l-ˈarḍu raǧǧan

   When the earth is shaken violently,

5. 56:5

   وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا﴿٥﴾

   wa-bussati l-ǧibālu bassan

   and the mountains are shattered into bits

6. 56:6

   فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنۢبَثًّا﴿٦﴾

   fa-kānat habāˈan munbaṯan

   and become scattered dust,

7. 56:7

   وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَـٰثَةً﴿٧﴾

   wa-kuntum ˈazwāǧan ṯalāṯatan

   you will be three groups:

8. 56:8

   فَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ﴿٨﴾

   fa-ˈaṣḥābu l-maymanati mā ˈaṣḥābu l-maymanati

   The People of the Right Hand—and what are the People of the Right Hand?!

9. 56:9

   وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ﴿٩﴾

   wa-ˈaṣḥābu l-mašˈamati mā ˈaṣḥābu l-mašˈamati

   And the People of the Left Hand—and what are the People of the Left Hand?!

10. 56:10

    وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ﴿١٠﴾

    wa-s-sābiqūna s-sābiqūna

    And the Foremost Ones are the foremost ones:

11. 56:11

    أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ﴿١١﴾

    ˈulāˈika l-muqarrabūna

    they are the ones brought near [to Allah],

12. 56:12

    فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ﴿١٢﴾

    fī ǧannāti n-naʿīmi

    [who will reside] in the gardens of bliss.

13. 56:13

    ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ﴿١٣﴾

    ṯullatun mina l-ˈawwalīna

    A multitude from the former [generations]

14. 56:14

    وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ﴿١٤﴾

    wa-qalīlun mina l-ˈāḫirīna

    and a few from the latter ones.

15. 56:15

    عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ﴿١٥﴾

    ʿalā sururin mawḍūnatin

    On brocaded couches

16. 56:16

    مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَـٰبِلِينَ﴿١٦﴾

    muttakiˈīna ʿalayhā mutaqābilīna

    reclining on them, face to face.

17. 56:17

    يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ﴿١٧﴾

    yaṭūfu ʿalayhim wildānun muḫalladūna

    They will be waited upon by immortal youths,

18. 56:18

    بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ﴿١٨﴾

    bi-ˈakwābin wa-ˈabārīqa wa-kaˈsin min maʿīnin

    with goblets and ewers and a cup of a clear wine,

19. 56:19

    لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ﴿١٩﴾

    lā yuṣaddaʿūna ʿanhā wa-lā yunzifūna

    which causes them neither headache nor stupefaction,

20. 56:20

    وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ﴿٢٠﴾

    wa-fākihatin mimmā yataḫayyarūna

    and such fruits as they prefer

21. 56:21

    وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ﴿٢١﴾

    wa-laḥmi ṭayrin mimmā yaštahūna

    and such flesh of fowls as they desire,

22. 56:22

    وَحُورٌ عِينٌ﴿٢٢﴾

    wa-ḥūrun ʿīnun

    and big-eyed houris

23. 56:23

    كَأَمْثَـٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ﴿٢٣﴾

    ka-ˈamṯāli l-luˈluˈi l-maknūni

    like guarded pearls,

24. 56:24

    جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ﴿٢٤﴾

    ǧazāˈan bi-mā kānū yaʿmalūna

    a reward for what they used to do.

25. 56:25

    لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا﴿٢٥﴾

    lā yasmaʿūna fīhā laġwan wa-lā taˈṯīman

    They will not hear therein any vain talk or sinful speech,

26. 56:26

    إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَـٰمًا سَلَـٰمًا﴿٢٦﴾

    ˈillā qīlan salāman salāman

    but only the watchword, ‘Peace!’ ‘Peace!’

27. 56:27

    وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ﴿٢٧﴾

    wa-ˈaṣhābu l-yamīni mā ˈaṣhābu l-yamīni

    And the People of the Right Hand—what are the People of the Right Hand?!

28. 56:28

    فِى سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ﴿٢٨﴾

    fī sidrin maḫḍūdin

    Amid thornless lote trees

29. 56:29

    وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ﴿٢٩﴾

    wa-ṭalḥin manḍūdin

    and clustered spathes

30. 56:30

    وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ﴿٣٠﴾

    wa-ẓillin mamdūdin

    and extended shade,

31. 56:31

    وَمَآءٍ مَّسْكُوبٍ﴿٣١﴾

    wa-māˈin maskūbin

    and ever-flowing water

32. 56:32

    وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ﴿٣٢﴾

    wa-fākihatin kaṯīratin

    and abundant fruits,

33. 56:33

    لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ﴿٣٣﴾

    lā maqṭūʿatin wa-lā mamnūʿatin

    neither inaccessible, nor forbidden,

34. 56:34

    وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ﴿٣٤﴾

    wa-furušin marfūʿatin

    and noble spouses.

35. 56:35

    إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَـٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءً﴿٣٥﴾

    ˈinnā ˈanšaˈnāhunna ˈinšāˈan

    We have created them with a special creation,

36. 56:36

    فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا﴿٣٦﴾

    fa-ǧaʿalnāhunna ˈabkāran

    and made them virgins,

37. 56:37

    عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا﴿٣٧﴾

    ʿuruban ˈatrāban

    loving, of a like age,

38. 56:38

    لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ﴿٣٨﴾

    li-ˈaṣḥābi l-yamīni

    for the People of the Right Hand.

39. 56:39

    ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ﴿٣٩﴾

    ṯullatun mina l-ˈawwalīna

    A multitude from the former [generations]

40. 56:40

    وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ﴿٤٠﴾

    wa-ṯullatun mina l-ˈāḫirīna

    and a multitude from the latter [ones].

41. 56:41

    وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ﴿٤١﴾

    wa-ˈaṣḥābu š-šimāli mā ˈaṣḥābu š-šimāli

    And the People of the Left Hand—what are the People of the Left Hand?!

42. 56:42

    فِى سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ﴿٤٢﴾

    fī samūmin wa-ḥamīmin

    Amid infernal miasma and boiling water

43. 56:43

    وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ﴿٤٣﴾

    wa-ẓillin min yaḥmūmin

    and the shadow of a dense black smoke,

44. 56:44

    لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ﴿٤٤﴾

    lā bāridin wa-lā karīmin

    neither cool nor beneficial.

45. 56:45

    إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ﴿٤٥﴾

    ˈinnahum kānū qabla ḏālika mutrafīna

    Indeed they had been affluent before this,

46. 56:46

    وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ﴿٤٦﴾

    wa-kānū yuṣirrūna ʿalā l-ḥinṯi l-ʿaẓīmi

    and they used to persist in the great sin.

47. 56:47

    وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ﴿٤٧﴾

    wa-kānū yaqūlūna ˈa-ˈiḏā mitnā wa-kunnā turāban wa-ʿiẓāman ˈa-ˈinnā la-mabʿūṯūna

    And they used to say, ‘What! When we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we be resurrected?!

48. 56:48

    أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ﴿٤٨﴾

    ˈa-wa-ˈābāˈunā l-ˈawwalūna

    And our forefathers too?!’

49. 56:49

    قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ﴿٤٩﴾

    qul ˈinna l-ˈawwalīna wa-l-ˈāḫirīna

    Say, ‘Indeed the former and latter generations

50. 56:50

    لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَـٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ﴿٥٠﴾

    la-maǧmūʿūna ˈilā mīqāti yawmin maʿlūmin

    will all be gathered for the tryst of a known day.

51. 56:51

    ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ﴿٥١﴾

    ṯumma ˈinnakum ˈayyuhā ḍ-ḍāllūna l-mukaḏḏibūna

    Then indeed, you, astray deniers,

52. 56:52

    لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ﴿٥٢﴾

    la-ˈākilūna min šaǧarin min zaqqūmin

    will surely eat from the Zaqqum tree

53. 56:53

    فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ﴿٥٣﴾

    fa-māliˈūna minhā l-buṭūna

    and stuff your bellies with it,

54. 56:54

    فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ﴿٥٤﴾

    fa-šāribūna ʿalayhi mina l-ḥamīmi

    and drink boiling water on top of it,

55. 56:55

    فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ﴿٥٥﴾

    fa-šāribūna šurba l-hīmi

    drinking like thirsty camels.’

56. 56:56

    هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ﴿٥٦﴾

    hāḏā nuzuluhum yawma d-dīni

    Such will be the hospitality they receive on the Day of Retribution.

57. 56:57

    نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ﴿٥٧﴾

    naḥnu ḫalaqnākum fa-law-lā tuṣaddiqūna

    We created you. Then why do you not acknowledge it?

58. 56:58

    أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ﴿٥٨﴾

    ˈa-fa-raˈaytum mā tumnūna

    Have you considered the sperm that you emit?

59. 56:59

    ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ﴿٥٩﴾

    ˈa-ˈantum taḫluqūnahū ˈam naḥnu l-ḫāliqūna

    Is it you who create it, or are We the creator?

60. 56:60

    نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ﴿٦٠﴾

    naḥnu qaddarnā baynakumu l-mawta wa-mā naḥnu bi-masbūqīna

    We have ordained death among you, and We are not to be outmaneuvered

61. 56:61

    عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَـٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ﴿٦١﴾

    ʿalā ˈan nubaddila ˈamṯālakum wa-nunšiˈakum fī mā lā taʿlamūna

    from replacing you with your likes and recreating you in [a realm] you do not know.

62. 56:62

    وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ﴿٦٢﴾

    wa-la-qad ʿalimtumu n-našˈata l-ˈūlā fa-law-lā taḏakkarūna

    Certainly you have known the first genesis, then why do you not take admonition?

63. 56:63

    أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ﴿٦٣﴾

    ˈa-fa-raˈaytum mā taḥruṯūna

    Have you considered what you sow?

64. 56:64

    ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ﴿٦٤﴾

    ˈa-ˈantum tazraʿūnahū ˈam naḥnu z-zāriʿūna

    Is it you who make it grow, or are We the grower?

65. 56:65

    لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ حُطَـٰمًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ﴿٦٥﴾

    law našāˈu la-ǧaʿalnāhu ḥuṭāman fa-ẓaltum tafakkahūna

    If We wish, We turn it into chaff, whereat you are left stunned [saying to yourselves,]

66. 56:66

    إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ﴿٦٦﴾

    ˈinnā la-muġramūna

    ‘Indeed we have suffered loss!

67. 56:67

    بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ﴿٦٧﴾

    bal naḥnu maḥrūmūna

    No, we are deprived!’

68. 56:68

    أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ﴿٦٨﴾

    ˈa-fa-raˈaytumu l-māˈa llaḏī tašrabūna

    Have you considered the water that you drink?

69. 56:69

    ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ﴿٦٩﴾

    ˈa-ˈantum ˈanzaltumūhu mina l-muzni ˈam naḥnu l-munzilūna

    Is it you who bring it down from the rain cloud, or is it We who bring [it] down?

70. 56:70

    لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَـٰهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ﴿٧٠﴾

    law našāˈu ǧaʿalnāhu ˈuǧāǧan fa-law-lā taškurūna

    If We wish We can make it bitter. Then why do you not give thanks?

71. 56:71

    أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ﴿٧١﴾

    ˈa-fa-raˈaytumu n-nāra llatī tūrūna

    Have you considered the fire that you kindle?

72. 56:72

    ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ﴿٧٢﴾

    ˈa-ˈantum ˈanšaˈtum šaǧaratahā ˈam naḥnu l-munšiˈūna

    Was it you who caused its tree to grow, or were We the grower?

73. 56:73

    نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَـٰهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَـٰعًا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ﴿٧٣﴾

    naḥnu ǧaʿalnāhā taḏkiratan wa-matāʿan li-l-muqwīna

    It was We who made it a reminder and a boon for the desert-dwellers.

74. 56:74

    فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ﴿٧٤﴾

    fa-sabbiḥ bi-smi rabbika l-ʿaẓīmi

    So celebrate the Name of your Lord, the All-supreme.

75. 56:75

    فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ﴿٧٥﴾

    fa-lā ˈuqsimu bi-mawāqiʿi n-nuǧūmi

    I swear by the places where the stars set!

76. 56:76

    وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ﴿٧٦﴾

    wa-ˈinnahū la-qasamun law taʿlamūna ʿaẓīmun

    And indeed it is a great oath, should you know.

77. 56:77

    إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ﴿٧٧﴾

    ˈinnahū la-qurˈānun karīmun

    This is indeed a noble Quran,

78. 56:78

    فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مَّكْنُونٍ﴿٧٨﴾

    fī kitābin maknūnin

    in a guarded Book

79. 56:79

    لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ﴿٧٩﴾

    lā yamassuhū ˈillā l-muṭahharūna

    —no one touches it except the pure ones—

80. 56:80

    تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ﴿٨٠﴾

    tanzīlun min rabbi l-ʿālamīna

    sent down gradually from the Lord of all the worlds.

81. 56:81

    أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ﴿٨١﴾

    ˈa-fa-bi-hāḏā l-ḥadīṯi ˈantum mudhinūna

    What! Do you take lightly this discourse?

82. 56:82

    وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ﴿٨٢﴾

    wa-taǧʿalūna rizqakum ˈannakum tukaḏḏibūna

    And make your denial of it your vocation?

83. 56:83

    فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ﴿٨٣﴾

    fa-law-lā ˈiḏā balaġati l-ḥulqūma

    So when it reaches the throat [of the dying person],

84. 56:84

    وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ﴿٨٤﴾

    wa-ˈantum ḥīnaˈiḏin tanẓurūna

    and at that moment you are looking on [at his bedside]

85. 56:85

    وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ﴿٨٥﴾

    wa-naḥnu ˈaqrabu ˈilayhi minkum wa-lākin lā tubṣirūna

    —and We are nearer to him than you are, though you do not perceive—

86. 56:86

    فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ﴿٨٦﴾

    fa-law-lā ˈin kuntum ġayra madīnīna

    then why do you not restore it, if you are not subject

87. 56:87

    تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ﴿٨٧﴾

    tarǧiʿūnahā ˈin kuntum ṣādiqīna

    [to Divine dispensation], if you are truthful?

88. 56:88

    فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ﴿٨٨﴾

    fa-ˈammā ˈin kāna mina l-muqarrabīna

    Then, if he be of those brought near,

89. 56:89

    فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ﴿٨٩﴾

    fa-rawḥun wa-rayḥānun wa-ǧannatu naʿīmin

    then ease, abundance, and a garden of bliss.

90. 56:90

    وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ﴿٩٠﴾

    wa-ˈammā ˈin kāna min ˈaṣḥābi l-yamīni

    And if he be of the People of the Right Hand,

91. 56:91

    فَسَلَـٰمٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ﴿٩١﴾

    fa-salāmun laka min ˈaṣḥābi l-yamīni

    then [he will be told,] ‘Peace be on you, from the People of the Right Hand!’

92. 56:92

    وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ﴿٩٢﴾

    wa-ˈammā ˈin kāna mina l-mukaḏḏibīna ḍ-ḍāllīna

    But if he be of the impugners, the astray ones,

93. 56:93

    فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ﴿٩٣﴾

    fa-nuzulun min ḥamīmin

    then a treat of boiling water

94. 56:94

    وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ﴿٩٤﴾

    wa-taṣliyatu ǧaḥīmin

    and entry into hell.

95. 56:95

    إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ﴿٩٥﴾

    ˈinna hāḏā la-huwa ḥaqqu l-yaqīni

    Indeed this is certain truth.

96. 56:96

    فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ﴿٩٦﴾

    fa-sabbiḥ bi-smi rabbika l-ʿaẓīmi

    So celebrate the Name of your Lord, the All-supreme!
