Surah 7
سُورَةُ الأَعۡرَافِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
الٓمٓصٓ
ʾ-l-m-ṣ (ˈalif lām mīm ṣād)
Alif, Lam, Mim, Suad.
كِتَـٰبٌ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ فَلَا يَكُن فِى صَدْرِكَ حَرَجٌ مِّنْهُ لِتُنذِرَ بِهِۦ وَذِكْرَىٰ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
kitābun ˈunzila ˈilayka fa-lā yakun fī ṣadrika ḥaraǧun minhu li-tunḏira bihī wa-ḏikrā li-l-muˈminīna
[This is] a Book that has been sent down to you—so let there be no disquiet in your heart on its account that you may warn thereby—and as an admonition for the faithful.
ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ مَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا۟ مِن دُونِهِۦٓ أَوْلِيَآءَ ۗ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ
ittabiʿū mā ˈunzila ˈilaykum min rabbikum wa-lā tattabiʿū min dūnihī ˈawliyāˈa qalīlan mā taḏakkarūna
Follow what has been sent down to you from your Lord, and do not follow any masters besides Him. Little is the admonition that you take!
وَكَم مِّن قَرْيَةٍ أَهْلَكْنَـٰهَا فَجَآءَهَا بَأْسُنَا بَيَـٰتًا أَوْ هُمْ قَآئِلُونَ
wa-kam min qaryatin ˈahlaknāhā fa-ǧāˈahā baˈsunā bayātan ˈaw hum qāˈilūna
How many a town We have destroyed! Our punishment came to it at night, or while they were taking a midday nap.
فَمَا كَانَ دَعْوَىٰهُمْ إِذْ جَآءَهُم بَأْسُنَآ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِينَ
fa-mā kāna daʿwāhum ˈiḏ ǧāˈahum baˈsunā ˈillā ˈan qālū ˈinnā kunnā ẓālimīna
Then their cry, when Our punishment overtook them, was only that they said, ‘We have indeed been wrongdoers!’
فَلَنَسْـَٔلَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أُرْسِلَ إِلَيْهِمْ وَلَنَسْـَٔلَنَّ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
fa-la-nasˈalanna llaḏīna ˈursila ˈilayhim wa-la-nasˈalanna l-mursalīna
We will surely question those to whom the apostles were sent, and We will surely question the apostles.
فَلَنَقُصَّنَّ عَلَيْهِم بِعِلْمٍ ۖ وَمَا كُنَّا غَآئِبِينَ
fa-la-naquṣṣanna ʿalayhim bi-ʿilmin wa-mā kunnā ġāˈibīna
Then We will surely recount to them with knowledge, for We had not been absent.
وَٱلْوَزْنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ ٱلْحَقُّ ۚ فَمَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ
wa-l-waznu yawmaˈiḏin-i l-ḥaqqu fa-man ṯaqulat mawāzīnuhū fa-ˈulāˈika humu l-mufliḥūna
The weighing [of deeds] on that Day is a truth. As for those whose deeds weigh heavy in the scales—it is they who are the felicitous.
وَمَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ خَسِرُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا يَظْلِمُونَ
wa-man ḫaffat mawāzīnuhū fa-ˈulāˈika llaḏīna ḫasirū ˈanfusahum bi-mā kānū bi-ˈāyātinā yaẓlimūna
As for those whose deeds weigh light in the scales—it is they who have ruined their souls, because they used to wrong Our signs.
وَلَقَدْ مَكَّنَّـٰكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَـٰيِشَ ۗ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ
wa-la-qad makkannākum fī l-ˈarḍi wa-ǧaʿalnā lakum fīhā maʿāyiša qalīlan mā taškurūna
Certainly We have established you on the earth, and made in it [various] means of livelihood for you. Little do you thank.
وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ ثُمَّ صَوَّرْنَـٰكُمْ ثُمَّ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ ٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِـَٔادَمَ فَسَجَدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ لَمْ يَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ
wa-la-qad ḫalaqnākum ṯumma ṣawwarnākum ṯumma qulnā li-l-malāˈikati sǧudū li-ˈādama fa-saǧadū ˈillā ˈiblīsa lam yakun mina s-sāǧidīna
Certainly We created you, then We formed you, then We said to the angels, ‘Prostrate before Adam.’ So they [all] prostrated, but not Iblis: he was not among those who prostrated.
قَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَلَّا تَسْجُدَ إِذْ أَمَرْتُكَ ۖ قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِى مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن طِينٍ
qāla mā manaʿaka ˈallā tasǧuda ˈiḏ ˈamartuka qāla ˈana ḫayrun minhu ḫalaqtanī min nārin wa-ḫalaqtahū min ṭīnin
Said He, ‘What prevented you from prostrating, when I commanded you? ’‘I am better than him,’ he said. ‘You created me from fire and You created him from clay.’
قَالَ فَٱهْبِطْ مِنْهَا فَمَا يَكُونُ لَكَ أَن تَتَكَبَّرَ فِيهَا فَٱخْرُجْ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰغِرِينَ
qāla fa-hbiṭ minhā fa-mā yakūnu laka ˈan tatakabbara fīhā fa-ḫruǧ ˈinnaka mina ṣ-ṣāġirīna
‘Get down from it!’ He said. ‘It is not for you to be arrogant therein. Begone! You are indeed among the degraded ones.’
قَالَ أَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ
qāla ˈanẓirnī ˈilā yawmi yubʿaṯūna
He said, ‘Respite me till the day they will be resurrected.’
قَالَ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ
qāla ˈinnaka mina l-munẓarīna
Said He, ‘You are indeed among the reprieved.’
قَالَ فَبِمَآ أَغْوَيْتَنِى لَأَقْعُدَنَّ لَهُمْ صِرَٰطَكَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ
qāla fa-bi-mā ˈaġwaytanī la-ˈaqʿudanna lahum ṣirāṭaka l-mustaqīma
‘As You have consigned me to perversity,’ he said, ‘I will surely lie in wait for them on Your straight path.
ثُمَّ لَـَٔاتِيَنَّهُم مِّنۢ بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ وَعَنْ أَيْمَـٰنِهِمْ وَعَن شَمَآئِلِهِمْ ۖ وَلَا تَجِدُ أَكْثَرَهُمْ شَـٰكِرِينَ
ṯumma la-ˈātiyannahum min bayni ˈaydīhim wa-min ḫalfihim wa-ʿan ˈaymānihim wa-ʿan šamāˈilihim wa-lā taǧidu ˈakṯarahum šākirīna
Then I will come at them from their front and from their rear, and from their right and their left, and You will not find most of them to be grateful.’
قَالَ ٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا مَذْءُومًا مَّدْحُورًا ۖ لَّمَن تَبِعَكَ مِنْهُمْ لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
qāla ḫruǧ minhā maḏˈūman madḥūran la-man tabiʿaka minhum la-ˈamlaˈanna ǧahannama minkum ˈaǧmaʿīna
Said He, ‘Begone hence, blameful and banished! Whoever of them follows you, I will surely fill hell with you all.’
وَيَـٰٓـَٔادَمُ ٱسْكُنْ أَنتَ وَزَوْجُكَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ فَكُلَا مِنْ حَيْثُ شِئْتُمَا وَلَا تَقْرَبَا هَـٰذِهِ ٱلشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
wa-yā-ˈādamu skun ˈanta wa-zawǧuka l-ǧannata fa-kulā min ḥayṯu šiˈtumā wa-lā taqrabā hāḏihi š-šaǧarata fa-takūnā mina ẓ-ẓālimīna
[Then He said to Adam,] ‘O Adam, dwell with your mate in paradise, and eat thereof whence you wish; but do not approach this tree, lest you should be among the wrongdoers.’
فَوَسْوَسَ لَهُمَا ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ لِيُبْدِىَ لَهُمَا مَا وُۥرِىَ عَنْهُمَا مِن سَوْءَٰتِهِمَا وَقَالَ مَا نَهَىٰكُمَا رَبُّكُمَا عَنْ هَـٰذِهِ ٱلشَّجَرَةِ إِلَّآ أَن تَكُونَا مَلَكَيْنِ أَوْ تَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلْخَـٰلِدِينَ
fa-waswasa lahumā š-šayṭānu li-yubdiya lahumā mā wūriya ʿanhumā min sawˈātihimā wa-qāla mā nahākumā rabbukumā ʿan hāḏihi š-šaǧarati ˈillā ˈan takūnā malakayni ˈaw takūnā mina l-ḫālidīna
Then Satan tempted them, to expose to them what was hidden from them of their nakedness, and he said, ‘Your Lord has only forbidden you from this tree lest you should become angels, or lest you become immortal.’
وَقَاسَمَهُمَآ إِنِّى لَكُمَا لَمِنَ ٱلنَّـٰصِحِينَ
wa-qāsamahumā ˈinnī lakumā la-mina n-nāṣiḥīna
And he swore to them, ‘I am indeed your well-wisher.’
فَدَلَّىٰهُمَا بِغُرُورٍ ۚ فَلَمَّا ذَاقَا ٱلشَّجَرَةَ بَدَتْ لَهُمَا سَوْءَٰتُهُمَا وَطَفِقَا يَخْصِفَانِ عَلَيْهِمَا مِن وَرَقِ ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۖ وَنَادَىٰهُمَا رَبُّهُمَآ أَلَمْ أَنْهَكُمَا عَن تِلْكُمَا ٱلشَّجَرَةِ وَأَقُل لَّكُمَآ إِنَّ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ لَكُمَا عَدُوٌّ مُّبِينٌ
fa-dallāhumā bi-ġurūrin fa-lammā ḏāqā š-šaǧarata badat lahumā sawˈātuhumā wa-ṭafiqā yaḫṣifāni ʿalayhimā min waraqi l-ǧannati wa-nādāhumā rabbuhumā ˈa-lam ˈanhakumā ʿan tilkumā š-šaǧarati wa-ˈaqul lakumā ˈinna š-šayṭāna lakumā ʿaduwwun mubīnun
Thus he brought about their fall by deception. So when they tasted of the tree, their nakedness became exposed to them, and they began to stitch over themselves with the leaves of paradise. Their Lord called out to them, ‘Did I not forbid you from that tree, and tell you, ‘‘Satan is indeed your manifest enemy?’’ ’
قَالَا رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَآ أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ
qālā rabbanā ẓalamnā ˈanfusanā wa-ˈin lam taġfir lanā wa-tarḥamnā la-nakūnanna mina l-ḫāsirīna
They said, ‘Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves! If You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.’
قَالَ ٱهْبِطُوا۟ بَعْضُكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ ۖ وَلَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُسْتَقَرٌّ وَمَتَـٰعٌ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ
qāla hbiṭū baʿḍukum li-baʿḍin ʿaduwwun wa-lakum fī l-ˈarḍi mustaqarrun wa-matāʿun ˈilā ḥīnin
He said, ‘Get down, being enemies of one another! On the earth shall be your abode and sustenance for a time.’
قَالَ فِيهَا تَحْيَوْنَ وَفِيهَا تَمُوتُونَ وَمِنْهَا تُخْرَجُونَ
qāla fīhā taḥyawna wa-fīhā tamūtūna wa-minhā tuḫraǧūna
He said, ‘In it you will live, and in it you will die; and from it you will be raised [from the dead].’
يَـٰبَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ قَدْ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمْ لِبَاسًا يُوَٰرِى سَوْءَٰتِكُمْ وَرِيشًا ۖ وَلِبَاسُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ
yā-banī ˈādama qad ˈanzalnā ʿalaykum libāsan yuwārī sawˈātikum wa-rīšan wa-libāsu t-taqwā ḏālika ḫayrun ḏālika min ˈāyāti llāhi laʿallahum yaḏḏakkarūna
‘O Children of Adam! We have certainly sent down to you garments to cover your nakedness, and for adornment. Yet the garment of Godwariness—that is the best.’ That is [one] of Allah’s signs, so that they may take admonition.
يَـٰبَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ لَا يَفْتِنَنَّكُمُ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ كَمَآ أَخْرَجَ أَبَوَيْكُم مِّنَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ يَنزِعُ عَنْهُمَا لِبَاسَهُمَا لِيُرِيَهُمَا سَوْءَٰتِهِمَآ ۗ إِنَّهُۥ يَرَىٰكُمْ هُوَ وَقَبِيلُهُۥ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا تَرَوْنَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَ أَوْلِيَآءَ لِلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
yā-banī ˈādama lā yaftinannakumu š-šayṭānu ka-mā ˈaḫraǧa ˈabawaykum mina l-ǧannati yanziʿu ʿanhumā libāsahumā li-yuriyahumā sawˈātihimā ˈinnahū yarākum huwa wa-qabīluhū min ḥayṯu lā tarawnahum ˈinnā ǧaʿalnā š-šayāṭīna ˈawliyāˈa li-llaḏīna lā yuˈminūna
‘O Children of Adam! Do not let Satan tempt you, like he expelled your parents from paradise, stripping them of their garments to expose to them their nakedness. Indeed he sees you—he and his hosts—whence you do not see them. We have indeed made the devils friends of those who have no faith.’
وَإِذَا فَعَلُوا۟ فَـٰحِشَةً قَالُوا۟ وَجَدْنَا عَلَيْهَآ ءَابَآءَنَا وَٱللَّهُ أَمَرَنَا بِهَا ۗ قُلْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَأْمُرُ بِٱلْفَحْشَآءِ ۖ أَتَقُولُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
wa-ˈiḏā faʿalū fāḥišatan qālū waǧadnā ʿalayhā ˈābāˈanā wa-llāhu ˈamaranā bihā qul ˈinna llāha lā yaˈmuru bi-l-faḥšāˈi ˈa-taqūlūna ʿalā llāhi mā lā taʿlamūna
When they commit an indecency, they say, ‘We found our fathers practising it, and Allah has enjoined it upon us.’ Say, ‘Indeed Allah does not enjoin indecencies. Do you attribute to Allah what you do not know?’
قُلْ أَمَرَ رَبِّى بِٱلْقِسْطِ ۖ وَأَقِيمُوا۟ وُجُوهَكُمْ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ وَٱدْعُوهُ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ ۚ كَمَا بَدَأَكُمْ تَعُودُونَ
qul ˈamara rabbī bi-l-qisṭi wa-ˈaqīmū wuǧūhakum ʿinda kulli masǧidin wa-dʿūhu muḫliṣīna lahu d-dīna ka-mā badaˈakum taʿūdūna
Say, ‘My Lord has enjoined justice,’ and [He has enjoined,] ‘Set your heart [on Him] at every occasion of prayer, and invoke Him, putting your exclusive faith in Him. Even as He brought you forth in the beginning, so will you return.’
فَرِيقًا هَدَىٰ وَفَرِيقًا حَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلضَّلَـٰلَةُ ۗ إِنَّهُمُ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَ أَوْلِيَآءَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُم مُّهْتَدُونَ
farīqan hadā wa-farīqan ḥaqqa ʿalayhimu ḍ-ḍalālatu ˈinnahumu ttaḫaḏū š-šayāṭīna ˈawliyāˈa min dūni llāhi wa-yaḥsabūna ˈannahum muhtadūna
A part [of mankind] He has guided and a part has deserved [to be consigned to] error, for they took devils for guardians instead of Allah, and supposed they were guided.
يَـٰبَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ خُذُوا۟ زِينَتَكُمْ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ وَكُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ وَلَا تُسْرِفُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ
yā-banī ˈādama ḫuḏū zīnatakum ʿinda kulli masǧidin wa-kulū wa-šrabū wa-lā tusrifū ˈinnahū lā yuḥibbu l-musrifīna
O Children of Adam! Put on your adornment on every occasion of prayer, and eat and drink, but do not waste; indeed, He does not like the wasteful.
قُلْ مَنْ حَرَّمَ زِينَةَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَخْرَجَ لِعِبَادِهِۦ وَٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ مِنَ ٱلرِّزْقِ ۚ قُلْ هِىَ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا خَالِصَةً يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۗ كَذَٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ
qul man ḥarrama zīnata llāhi llatī ˈaḫraǧa li-ʿibādihī wa-ṭ-ṭayyibāti mina r-rizqi qul hiya li-llaḏīna ˈāmanū fī l-ḥayāti d-dunyā ḫāliṣatan yawma l-qiyāmati ka-ḏālika nufaṣṣilu l-ˈāyāti li-qawmin yaʿlamūna
Say, ‘Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has brought forth for His servants, and the good things of [His] provision?’ Say, ‘These are for the faithful in the life of this world, and exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection.’ Thus do We elaborate the signs for a people who have knowledge.
قُلْ إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ رَبِّىَ ٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ وَٱلْإِثْمَ وَٱلْبَغْىَ بِغَيْرِ ٱلْحَقِّ وَأَن تُشْرِكُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ مَا لَمْ يُنَزِّلْ بِهِۦ سُلْطَـٰنًا وَأَن تَقُولُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
qul ˈinnamā ḥarrama rabbiya l-fawāḥiša mā ẓahara minhā wa-mā baṭana wa-l-ˈiṯma wa-l-baġya bi-ġayri l-ḥaqqi wa-ˈan tušrikū bi-llāhi mā lam yunazzil bihī sulṭānan wa-ˈan taqūlū ʿalā llāhi mā lā taʿlamūna
Say, ‘My Lord has only forbidden indecencies, the outward among them and the inward ones, and sin and undue aggression, and that you should ascribe to Allah partners for which He has not sent down any authority, and that you should attribute to Allah what you do not know.’
وَلِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلٌ ۖ فَإِذَا جَآءَ أَجَلُهُمْ لَا يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ سَاعَةً ۖ وَلَا يَسْتَقْدِمُونَ
wa-li-kulli ˈummatin ˈaǧalun fa-ˈiḏā ǧāˈa ˈaǧaluhum lā yastaˈḫirūna sāʿatan wa-lā yastaqdimūna
There is a [preordained] time for every nation: when their time comes, they shall not defer it by a single hour nor shall they advance it.
يَـٰبَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ إِمَّا يَأْتِيَنَّكُمْ رُسُلٌ مِّنكُمْ يَقُصُّونَ عَلَيْكُمْ ءَايَـٰتِى ۙ فَمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰ وَأَصْلَحَ فَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ
yā-banī ˈādama ˈimmā yaˈtiyannakum rusulun minkum yaquṣṣūna ʿalaykum ˈāyātī fa-mani ttaqā wa-ˈaṣlaḥa fa-lā ḫawfun ʿalayhim wa-lā hum yaḥzanūna
O Children of Adam! If there come to you apostles from among yourselves, recounting to you My signs, then those who are Godwary and righteous will have no fear, nor will they grieve.
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ عَنْهَآ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ
wa-llaḏīna kaḏḏabū bi-ˈāyātinā wa-stakbarū ʿanhā ˈulāˈika ˈaṣḥābu n-nāri hum fīhā ḫālidūna
But those who deny Our signs and are disdainful of them, they shall be the inmates of the Fire and they shall remain in it [forever].
فَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفْتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا أَوْ كَذَّبَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِهِۦٓ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يَنَالُهُمْ نَصِيبُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُنَا يَتَوَفَّوْنَهُمْ قَالُوٓا۟ أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ قَالُوا۟ ضَلُّوا۟ عَنَّا وَشَهِدُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ كَـٰفِرِينَ
fa-man ˈaẓlamu mimmani ftarā ʿalā llāhi kaḏiban ˈaw kaḏḏaba bi-ˈāyātihī ˈulāˈika yanāluhum naṣībuhum mina l-kitābi ḥattā ˈiḏā ǧāˈathum rusulunā yatawaffawnahum qālū ˈayna mā kuntum tadʿūna min dūni llāhi qālū ḍallū ʿannā wa-šahidū ʿalā ˈanfusihim ˈannahum kānū kāfirīna
So who is a greater wrongdoer than him who fabricates a lie against Allah, or denies His signs? Their share, as decreed in the Book, shall reach them. When Our messengers come to take them away, they will say, ‘Where is that which you used to invoke besides Allah?’ They will say, ‘They have forsaken us,’ and they will testify against themselves that they were faithless.
قَالَ ٱدْخُلُوا۟ فِىٓ أُمَمٍ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلْإِنسِ فِى ٱلنَّارِ ۖ كُلَّمَا دَخَلَتْ أُمَّةٌ لَّعَنَتْ أُخْتَهَا ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا ٱدَّارَكُوا۟ فِيهَا جَمِيعًا قَالَتْ أُخْرَىٰهُمْ لِأُولَىٰهُمْ رَبَّنَا هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ أَضَلُّونَا فَـَٔاتِهِمْ عَذَابًا ضِعْفًا مِّنَ ٱلنَّارِ ۖ قَالَ لِكُلٍّ ضِعْفٌ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تَعْلَمُونَ
qāla dḫulū fī ˈumamin qad ḫalat min qablikum mina l-ǧinni wa-l-ˈinsi fī n-nāri kullamā daḫalat ˈummatun laʿanat ˈuḫtahā ḥattā ˈiḏā ddārakū fīhā ǧamīʿan qālat ˈuḫrāhum li-ˈūlāhum rabbanā hāˈulāˈi ˈaḍallūnā fa-ˈātihim ʿaḏāban ḍiʿfan mina n-nāri qāla li-kullin ḍiʿfun wa-lākin lā taʿlamūna
He will say, ‘Enter the Fire, along with the nations of jinn and humans who passed before you!’ Every time that a nation enters [hell], it will curse its sister [nation]. When they all rejoin in it, the last of them will say about the first of them, ‘Our Lord, it was they who led us astray; so give them a double punishment of the Fire.’ He will say, ‘It is double for each [of you], but you do not know.’
وَقَالَتْ أُولَىٰهُمْ لِأُخْرَىٰهُمْ فَمَا كَانَ لَكُمْ عَلَيْنَا مِن فَضْلٍ فَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْسِبُونَ
wa-qālat ˈūlāhum li-ˈuḫrāhum fa-mā kāna lakum ʿalaynā min faḍlin fa-ḏūqū l-ʿaḏāba bi-mā kuntum taksibūna
And the first of them will say to the last of them, ‘You have no merit over us! So taste the punishment because of what you used to earn.’
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ عَنْهَا لَا تُفَتَّحُ لَهُمْ أَبْوَٰبُ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَلَا يَدْخُلُونَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ حَتَّىٰ يَلِجَ ٱلْجَمَلُ فِى سَمِّ ٱلْخِيَاطِ ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
ˈinna llaḏīna kaḏḏabū bi-ˈāyātinā wa-stakbarū ʿanhā lā tufattaḥu lahum ˈabwābu s-samāˈi wa-lā yadḫulūna l-ǧannata ḥattā yaliǧa l-ǧamalu fī sammi l-ḫiyāṭi wa-ka-ḏālika naǧzī l-muǧrimīna
Indeed, those who deny Our signs and are disdainful of them—the gates of the heaven will not be opened for them, nor shall they enter paradise until the camel passes through the needle’s eye, and thus do We requite the guilty.
لَهُم مِّن جَهَنَّمَ مِهَادٌ وَمِن فَوْقِهِمْ غَوَاشٍ ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
lahum min ǧahannama mihādun wa-min fawqihim ġawāšin wa-ka-ḏālika naǧzī ẓ-ẓālimīna
They shall have hell for their resting place, and over them shall be sheets [of fire], and thus do We requite the wrongdoers.
وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَا نُكَلِّفُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَآ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ
wa-llaḏīna ˈāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti lā nukallifu nafsan ˈillā wusʿahā ˈulāˈika ˈaṣḥābu l-ǧannati hum fīhā ḫālidūna
As for those who have faith and do righteous deeds—We task no soul except according to its capacity—they shall be the inhabitants of paradise, and they shall remain in it [forever].
وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِى صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهِمُ ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۖ وَقَالُوا۟ ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِى هَدَىٰنَا لِهَـٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لِنَهْتَدِىَ لَوْلَآ أَنْ هَدَىٰنَا ٱللَّهُ ۖ لَقَدْ جَآءَتْ رُسُلُ رَبِّنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ وَنُودُوٓا۟ أَن تِلْكُمُ ٱلْجَنَّةُ أُورِثْتُمُوهَا بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
wa-nazaʿnā mā fī ṣudūrihim min ġillin taǧrī min taḥtihimu l-ˈanhāru wa-qālū l-ḥamdu li-llāhi llaḏī hadānā li-hāḏā wa-mā kunnā li-nahtadiya law-lā ˈan hadānā llāhu la-qad ǧāˈat rusulu rabbinā bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-nūdū ˈan tilkumu l-ǧannatu ˈūriṯtumūhā bi-mā kuntum taʿmalūna
We will remove whatever rancour there is in their breasts, and streams will run for them. They will say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, who guided us to this. We would have never been guided had not Allah guided us. Our Lord’s apostles had certainly brought the truth.’ And the call would be made to them: ‘This is paradise, which you have been given to inherit because of what you used to do!’
وَنَادَىٰٓ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْجَنَّةِ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ أَن قَدْ وَجَدْنَا مَا وَعَدَنَا رَبُّنَا حَقًّا فَهَلْ وَجَدتُّم مَّا وَعَدَ رَبُّكُمْ حَقًّا ۖ قَالُوا۟ نَعَمْ ۚ فَأَذَّنَ مُؤَذِّنٌۢ بَيْنَهُمْ أَن لَّعْنَةُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَى ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
wa-nādā ˈaṣḥābu l-ǧannati ˈaṣḥāba n-nāri ˈan qad waǧadnā mā waʿadanā rabbunā ḥaqqan fa-hal waǧadtum mā waʿada rabbukum ḥaqqan qālū naʿam fa-ˈaḏḏana muˈaḏḏinun baynahum ˈan laʿnatu llāhi ʿalā ẓ-ẓālimīna
The inhabitants of paradise will call out to the inmates of the Fire, ‘We found what our Lord promised us to be true; did you find what your Lord promised you to be true?’ ‘Yes,’ they will say. Then a caller will announce in their midst, ‘May Allah’s curse be on the wrongdoers!’
ٱلَّذِينَ يَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَيَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًا وَهُم بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ كَـٰفِرُونَ
allaḏīna yaṣuddūna ʿan sabīli llāhi wa-yabġūnahā ʿiwaǧan wa-hum bi-l-ˈāḫirati kāfirūna
—Those who bar [others] from the way of Allah, and seek to make it crooked, and disbelieve in the Hereafter.
وَبَيْنَهُمَا حِجَابٌ ۚ وَعَلَى ٱلْأَعْرَافِ رِجَالٌ يَعْرِفُونَ كُلًّۢا بِسِيمَىٰهُمْ ۚ وَنَادَوْا۟ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ أَن سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَيْكُمْ ۚ لَمْ يَدْخُلُوهَا وَهُمْ يَطْمَعُونَ
wa-baynahumā ḥiǧābun wa-ʿalā l-ˈaʿrāfi riǧālun yaʿrifūna kullan bi-sīmāhum wa-nādaw ˈaṣḥāba l-ǧannati ˈan salāmun ʿalaykum lam yadḫulūhā wa-hum yaṭmaʿūna
There will be a veil between them. And on the Elevations will be certain men who recognize each of them by their mark. They will call out to the inhabitants of paradise, ‘Peace be to you!’ (They will not have entered it, though they would be eager to do so.
وَإِذَا صُرِفَتْ أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ تِلْقَآءَ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلنَّارِ قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْنَا مَعَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
wa-ˈiḏā ṣurifat ˈabṣāruhum tilqāˈa ˈaṣhābi n-nāri qālū rabbanā lā taǧʿalnā maʿa l-qawmi ẓ-ẓālimīna
And when their look is turned toward the inmates of the Fire, they will say, ‘Our Lord, do not put us among the wrongdoing lot!’)
وَنَادَىٰٓ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْأَعْرَافِ رِجَالًا يَعْرِفُونَهُم بِسِيمَىٰهُمْ قَالُوا۟ مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنكُمْ جَمْعُكُمْ وَمَا كُنتُمْ تَسْتَكْبِرُونَ
wa-nādā ˈaṣḥābu l-ˈaʿrāfi riǧālan yaʿrifūnahum bi-sīmāhum qālū mā ˈaġnā ʿankum ǧamʿukum wa-mā kuntum tastakbirūna
The occupants of the Elevations will call out to certain men whom they recognize by their marks, ‘Your rallying did not avail you, nor what you used to disdain.
أَهَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ ٱلَّذِينَ أَقْسَمْتُمْ لَا يَنَالُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِرَحْمَةٍ ۚ ٱدْخُلُوا۟ ٱلْجَنَّةَ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَآ أَنتُمْ تَحْزَنُونَ
ˈa-hāˈulāˈi llaḏīna ˈaqsamtum lā yanāluhumu llāhu bi-raḥmatin ˈudḫulū l-ǧannata lā ḫawfun ʿalaykum wa-lā ˈantum taḥzanūna
Are these the ones concerning whom you swore that Allah will not extend them any mercy?’ ‘Enter paradise! You shall have no fear, nor shall you grieve.’
وَنَادَىٰٓ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ أَنْ أَفِيضُوا۟ عَلَيْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمَآءِ أَوْ مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۚ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ حَرَّمَهُمَا عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
wa-nādā ˈaṣḥābu n-nāri ˈaṣḥāba l-ǧannati ˈan ˈafīḍū ʿalaynā mina l-māˈi ˈaw mimmā razaqakumu llāhu qālū ˈinna llāha ḥarramahumā ʿalā l-kāfirīna
The inmates of the Fire will call out to the inhabitants of paradise, ‘Pour on us some water, or something of what Allah has provided you.’ They will say, ‘Allah has indeed forbidden these two to the faithless!’
ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ دِينَهُمْ لَهْوًا وَلَعِبًا وَغَرَّتْهُمُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ فَٱلْيَوْمَ نَنسَىٰهُمْ كَمَا نَسُوا۟ لِقَآءَ يَوْمِهِمْ هَـٰذَا وَمَا كَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا يَجْحَدُونَ
allaḏīna ttaḫaḏū dīnahum lahwan wa-laʿiban wa-ġarrathumu l-ḥayātu d-dunyā fa-l-yawma nansāhum ka-mā nasū liqāˈa yawmihim hāḏā wa-mā kānū bi-ˈāyātinā yaǧḥadūna
Those who took their religion for diversion and play and whom the life of the world had deceived. So today, We will forget them as they forgot the encounter of this day of theirs, and as they used to impugn Our signs.
وَلَقَدْ جِئْنَـٰهُم بِكِتَـٰبٍ فَصَّلْنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ هُدًى وَرَحْمَةً لِّقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ
wa-la-qad ǧiˈnāhum bi-kitābin faṣṣalnāhu ʿalā ʿilmin hudan wa-raḥmatan li-qawmin yuˈminūna
Certainly We have brought them a Book, which We have elaborated with knowledge, as a guidance and mercy for a people who have faith.
هَلْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا تَأْوِيلَهُۥ ۚ يَوْمَ يَأْتِى تَأْوِيلُهُۥ يَقُولُ ٱلَّذِينَ نَسُوهُ مِن قَبْلُ قَدْ جَآءَتْ رُسُلُ رَبِّنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ فَهَل لَّنَا مِن شُفَعَآءَ فَيَشْفَعُوا۟ لَنَآ أَوْ نُرَدُّ فَنَعْمَلَ غَيْرَ ٱلَّذِى كُنَّا نَعْمَلُ ۚ قَدْ خَسِرُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَضَلَّ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَفْتَرُونَ
hal yanẓurūna ˈillā taˈwīlahū yawma yaˈtī taˈwīluhū yaqūlu llaḏīna nasūhu min qablu qad ǧāˈat rusulu rabbinā bi-l-ḥaqqi fa-hal lanā min šufaʿāˈa fa-yašfaʿū lanā ˈaw nuraddu fa-naʿmala ġayra llaḏī kunnā naʿmalu qad ḫasirū ˈanfusahum wa-ḍalla ʿanhum mā kānū yaftarūna
Do they not consider [the consequences of] its fulfillment? The day when its fulfillment comes, those who had forgotten it before will say, ‘Our Lord’s apostles had certainly brought the truth. If only we had some intercessors to intercede for us, or we would be returned, so that we may do differently from what we did!’ They have certainly ruined their souls, and what they used to fabricate has forsaken them.
إِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ فِى سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ يُغْشِى ٱلَّيْلَ ٱلنَّهَارَ يَطْلُبُهُۥ حَثِيثًا وَٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ وَٱلنُّجُومَ مُسَخَّرَٰتٍۭ بِأَمْرِهِۦٓ ۗ أَلَا لَهُ ٱلْخَلْقُ وَٱلْأَمْرُ ۗ تَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
ˈinna rabbakumu llāhu llaḏī ḫalaqa s-samāwāti wa-l-ˈarḍa fī sittati ˈayyāmin ṯumma stawā ʿalā l-ʿarši yuġšī l-layla n-nahāra yaṭlubuhū ḥaṯīṯan wa-š-šamsa wa-l-qamara wa-n-nuǧūma musaḫḫarātin bi-ˈamrihī ˈa-lā lahu l-ḫalqu wa-l-ˈamru tabāraka llāhu rabbu l-ʿālamīna
Indeed your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and then settled on the Throne. He draws the night’s cover over the day, which pursues it swiftly, and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, [all of them] disposed by His command. Look! All creation and command belong to Him. Blessed is Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.
ٱدْعُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ تَضَرُّعًا وَخُفْيَةً ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُعْتَدِينَ
udʿū rabbakum taḍarruʿan wa-ḫufyatan ˈinnahū lā yuḥibbu l-muʿtadīna
Supplicate your Lord, beseechingly and secretly. Indeed, He does not like the transgressors.
وَلَا تُفْسِدُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ بَعْدَ إِصْلَـٰحِهَا وَٱدْعُوهُ خَوْفًا وَطَمَعًا ۚ إِنَّ رَحْمَتَ ٱللَّهِ قَرِيبٌ مِّنَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
wa-lā tufsidū fī l-ˈarḍi baʿda ˈiṣlāḥihā wa-dʿūhu ḫawfan wa-ṭamaʿan ˈinna raḥmata llāhi qarībun mina l-muḥsinīna
And do not cause corruption on the earth after its restoration, and supplicate Him with fear and hope: indeed Allah’s mercy is close to the virtuous.
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُرْسِلُ ٱلرِّيَـٰحَ بُشْرًۢا بَيْنَ يَدَىْ رَحْمَتِهِۦ ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَآ أَقَلَّتْ سَحَابًا ثِقَالًا سُقْنَـٰهُ لِبَلَدٍ مَّيِّتٍ فَأَنزَلْنَا بِهِ ٱلْمَآءَ فَأَخْرَجْنَا بِهِۦ مِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نُخْرِجُ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ
wa-huwa llaḏī yursilu r-riyāḥa bušran bayna yaday raḥmatihī ḥattā ˈiḏā ˈaqallat saḥāban ṯiqālan suqnāhu li-baladin mayyitin fa-ˈanzalnā bihi l-māˈa fa-ˈaḫraǧnā bihī min kulli ṯ-ṯamarāti ka-ḏālika nuḫriǧu l-mawtā laʿallakum taḏakkarūna
It is He who sends forth the winds as harbingers of His mercy. When they bear [rain-] laden clouds, We drive them toward a dead land and send down water on it, and with it We bring forth all kinds of crops. Thus shall We raise the dead; maybe you will take admonition.
وَٱلْبَلَدُ ٱلطَّيِّبُ يَخْرُجُ نَبَاتُهُۥ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِۦ ۖ وَٱلَّذِى خَبُثَ لَا يَخْرُجُ إِلَّا نَكِدًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نُصَرِّفُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَشْكُرُونَ
wa-l-baladu ṭ-ṭayyibu yaḫruǧu nabātuhū bi-ˈiḏni rabbihī wa-llaḏī ḫabuṯa lā yaḫruǧu ˈillā nakidan ka-ḏālika nuṣarrifu l-ˈāyāti li-qawmin yaškurūna
The good land—its vegetation comes out by the permission of its Lord, and as for that which is bad, it does not come out except sparsely. Thus do We paraphrase the signs variously for a people who give thanks.
لَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦ فَقَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَـٰهٍ غَيْرُهُۥٓ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
la-qad ˈarsalnā nūḥan ˈilā qawmihī fa-qāla yā-qawmi ʿbudū llāha mā lakum min ˈilāhin ġayruhū ˈinnī ˈaḫāfu ʿalaykum ʿaḏāba yawmin ʿaẓīmin
Certainly We sent Noah to his people. He said, ‘O my people, worship Allah! You have no other god besides Him. Indeed I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous day.’
قَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ مِن قَوْمِهِۦٓ إِنَّا لَنَرَىٰكَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍ مُّبِينٍ
qāla l-malaˈu min qawmihī ˈinnā la-narāka fī ḍalālin mubīnin
The elite of his people said, ‘Indeed we see you in manifest error.’
قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ لَيْسَ بِى ضَلَـٰلَةٌ وَلَـٰكِنِّى رَسُولٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
qāla yā-qawmi laysa bī ḍalālatun wa-lākinnī rasūlun min rabbi l-ʿālamīna
He said, ‘O my people, I am not in error. Rather, I am an apostle from the Lord of all the worlds.
أُبَلِّغُكُمْ رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ رَبِّى وَأَنصَحُ لَكُمْ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
ˈuballiġukum risālāti rabbī wa-ˈanṣaḥu lakum wa-ˈaʿlamu mina llāhi mā lā taʿlamūna
I communicate to you the messages of my Lord, and I am your well-wisher, and I know from Allah what you do not know.
أَوَعَجِبْتُمْ أَن جَآءَكُمْ ذِكْرٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ عَلَىٰ رَجُلٍ مِّنكُمْ لِيُنذِرَكُمْ وَلِتَتَّقُوا۟ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
ˈa-wa-ʿaǧibtum ˈan ǧāˈakum ḏikrun min rabbikum ʿalā raǧulin minkum li-yunḏirakum wa-li-tattaqū wa-laʿallakum turḥamūna
Do you consider it odd that a reminder from your Lord should come to you through a man from among yourselves, to warn you so that you may be Godwary and so that you may receive His mercy?’
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ وَٱلَّذِينَ مَعَهُۥ فِى ٱلْفُلْكِ وَأَغْرَقْنَا ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا عَمِينَ
fa-kaḏḏabūhu fa-ˈanǧaynāhu wa-llaḏīna maʿahū fī l-fulki wa-ˈaġraqnā llaḏīna kaḏḏabū bi-ˈāyātinā ˈinnahum kānū qawman ʿamīna
But they denied him. So We delivered him and those who were with him in the ark, and We drowned those who denied Our signs. Indeed, they were a blind lot.
وَإِلَىٰ عَادٍ أَخَاهُمْ هُودًا ۗ قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَـٰهٍ غَيْرُهُۥٓ ۚ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
wa-ˈilā ʿādin ˈaḫāhum hūdan qāla yā-qawmi ʿbudū llāha mā lakum min ˈilāhin ġayruhū ˈa-fa-lā tattaqūna
And to [the people of] ‘Ad [We sent] Hud, their brother. He said, ‘O my people, worship Allah! You have no other god besides Him. Will you not then be wary [of Him]?’
قَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَوْمِهِۦٓ إِنَّا لَنَرَىٰكَ فِى سَفَاهَةٍ وَإِنَّا لَنَظُنُّكَ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ
qāla l-malaˈu llaḏīna kafarū min qawmihī ˈinnā la-narāka fī safāhatin wa-ˈinnā la-naẓunnuka mina l-kāḏibīna
The elite of his people who were faithless said, ‘Indeed we see you to be in folly, and indeed we consider you to be a liar.’
قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ لَيْسَ بِى سَفَاهَةٌ وَلَـٰكِنِّى رَسُولٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
qāla yā-qawmi laysa bī safāhatun wa-lākinnī rasūlun min rabbi l-ʿālamīna
He said, ‘O my people, I am not in folly. Rather, I am an apostle from the Lord of all the worlds.
أُبَلِّغُكُمْ رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ رَبِّى وَأَنَا۠ لَكُمْ نَاصِحٌ أَمِينٌ
ˈuballiġukum risālāti rabbī wa-ˈana lakum nāṣiḥun ˈamīnun
I communicate to you the messages of my Lord and I am a trustworthy well-wisher for you.
أَوَعَجِبْتُمْ أَن جَآءَكُمْ ذِكْرٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ عَلَىٰ رَجُلٍ مِّنكُمْ لِيُنذِرَكُمْ ۚ وَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟ إِذْ جَعَلَكُمْ خُلَفَآءَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ قَوْمِ نُوحٍ وَزَادَكُمْ فِى ٱلْخَلْقِ بَصْۜطَةً ۖ فَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟ ءَالَآءَ ٱللَّهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
ˈa-wa-ʿaǧibtum ˈan ǧāˈakum ḏikrun min rabbikum ʿalā raǧulin minkum li-yunḏirakum wa-ḏkurū ˈiḏ ǧaʿalakum ḫulafāˈa min baʿdi qawmi nūḥin wa-zādakum fī l-ḫalqi basṭatan fa-ḏkurū ˈālāˈa llāhi laʿallakum tufliḥūna
Do you consider it odd that there should come to you a reminder from your Lord through a man from among yourselves, so that he may warn you? Remember when He made you successors after the people of Noah, and increased you vastly in creation. So remember Allah’s bounties so that you may be felicitous.’
قَالُوٓا۟ أَجِئْتَنَا لِنَعْبُدَ ٱللَّهَ وَحْدَهُۥ وَنَذَرَ مَا كَانَ يَعْبُدُ ءَابَآؤُنَا ۖ فَأْتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَآ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
qālū ˈa-ǧiˈtanā li-naʿbuda llāha waḥdahū wa-naḏara mā kāna yaʿbudu ˈābāˈunā fa-ˈtinā bi-mā taʿidunā ˈin kunta mina ṣ-ṣādiqīna
They said, ‘Have you come to [tell] us that we should worship Allah alone and abandon what our fathers have been worshiping? Then bring us what you threaten us with, should you be truthful.’
قَالَ قَدْ وَقَعَ عَلَيْكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ رِجْسٌ وَغَضَبٌ ۖ أَتُجَـٰدِلُونَنِى فِىٓ أَسْمَآءٍ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّا نَزَّلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ فَٱنتَظِرُوٓا۟ إِنِّى مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْمُنتَظِرِينَ
qāla qad waqaʿa ʿalaykum min rabbikum riǧsun wa-ġaḍabun ˈa-tuǧādilūnanī fī ˈasmāˈin sammaytumūhā ˈantum wa-ˈābāˈukum mā nazzala llāhu bihā min sulṭānin fa-ntaẓirū ˈinnī maʿakum mina l-muntaẓirīna
He said, ‘Punishment and wrath from your Lord has become due against you. Do you dispute with me regarding names, which you have named—you and your fathers—for which Allah has not sent down any authority? So wait! I too am waiting along with you.’
فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ وَٱلَّذِينَ مَعَهُۥ بِرَحْمَةٍ مِّنَّا وَقَطَعْنَا دَابِرَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا ۖ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُؤْمِنِينَ
fa-ˈanǧaynāhu wa-llaḏīna maʿahū bi-raḥmatin minnā wa-qaṭaʿnā dābira llaḏīna kaḏḏabū bi-ˈāyātinā wa-mā kānū muˈminīna
Then We delivered him and those who were with him by a mercy from Us, and We rooted out those who denied Our signs and were not faithful.
وَإِلَىٰ ثَمُودَ أَخَاهُمْ صَـٰلِحًا ۗ قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَـٰهٍ غَيْرُهُۥ ۖ قَدْ جَآءَتْكُم بَيِّنَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةُ ٱللَّهِ لَكُمْ ءَايَةً ۖ فَذَرُوهَا تَأْكُلْ فِىٓ أَرْضِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوٓءٍ فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
wa-ˈilā ṯamūda ˈaḫāhum ṣāliḥan qāla yā-qawmi ʿbudū llāha mā lakum min ˈilāhin ġayruhū qad ǧāˈatkum bayyinatun min rabbikum hāḏihī nāqatu llāhi lakum ˈāyatan fa-ḏarūhā taˈkul fī ˈarḍi llāhi wa-lā tamassūhā bi-sūˈin fa-yaˈḫuḏakum ʿaḏābun ˈalīmun
And to [the people of] Thamud [We sent] Salih, their brother. He said, ‘O my people, worship Allah! You have no other god besides Him. There has certainly come to you a manifest proof from your Lord. This she-camel of Allah is a sign for you. Let her alone to graze [freely] in Allah’s land, and do not cause her any harm, for then you shall be seized by a painful punishment.
وَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟ إِذْ جَعَلَكُمْ خُلَفَآءَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ عَادٍ وَبَوَّأَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ تَتَّخِذُونَ مِن سُهُولِهَا قُصُورًا وَتَنْحِتُونَ ٱلْجِبَالَ بُيُوتًا ۖ فَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟ ءَالَآءَ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ
wa-ḏkurū ˈiḏ ǧaʿalakum ḫulafāˈa min baʿdi ʿādin wa-bawwaˈakum fī l-ˈarḍi tattaḫiḏūna min suhūlihā quṣūran wa-tanḥitūna l-ǧibāla buyūtan fa-ḏkurū ˈālāˈa llāhi wa-lā taʿṯaw fī l-ˈarḍi mufsidīna
Remember when He made you successors after [the people of] ‘Ad, and settled you in the land: you build palaces in its plains, and hew houses out of the mountains. So remember Allah’s bounties, and do not act wickedly on the earth, causing corruption.’
قَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ مِن قَوْمِهِۦ لِلَّذِينَ ٱسْتُضْعِفُوا۟ لِمَنْ ءَامَنَ مِنْهُمْ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ صَـٰلِحًا مُّرْسَلٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ ۚ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا بِمَآ أُرْسِلَ بِهِۦ مُؤْمِنُونَ
qāla l-malaˈu llaḏīna stakbarū min qawmihī li-llaḏīna stuḍʿifū li-man ˈāmana minhum ˈa-taʿlamūna ˈanna ṣāliḥan mursalun min rabbihī qālū ˈinnā bi-mā ˈursila bihī muˈminūna
The elite of his people who were arrogant said to those who were oppressed—to those among them who had faith—‘Do you know that Salih has been sent by his Lord?’ They said, ‘We indeed believe in what he has been sent with.’
قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسْتَكْبَرُوٓا۟ إِنَّا بِٱلَّذِىٓ ءَامَنتُم بِهِۦ كَـٰفِرُونَ
qāla llaḏīna stakbarū ˈinnā bi-llaḏī ˈāmantum bihī kāfirūna
Those who were arrogant said, ‘We indeed disbelieve in what you have believed.’
فَعَقَرُوا۟ ٱلنَّاقَةَ وَعَتَوْا۟ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ وَقَالُوا۟ يَـٰصَـٰلِحُ ٱئْتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَآ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
fa-ʿaqarū n-nāqata wa-ʿataw ʿan ˈamri rabbihim wa-qālū yā-ṣāliḥu ˈtinā bi-mā taʿidunā ˈin kunta mina l-mursalīna
So they hamstrung the She-camel and defied the command of their Lord, and they said, ‘O Salih, bring us what you threaten us with, if you are one of the apostles.’
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلرَّجْفَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ فِى دَارِهِمْ جَـٰثِمِينَ
fa-ˈaḫaḏathumu r-raǧfatu fa-ˈaṣbaḥū fī dārihim ǧāṯimīna
Thereupon the earthquake seized them, and they lay lifeless prostrate in their homes.
فَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ لَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ رِسَالَةَ رَبِّى وَنَصَحْتُ لَكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُحِبُّونَ ٱلنَّـٰصِحِينَ
fa-tawallā ʿanhum wa-qāla yā-qawmi la-qad ˈablaġtukum risālata rabbī wa-naṣaḥtu lakum wa-lākin lā tuḥibbūna n-nāṣiḥīna
So he abandoned them [to their fate], and said, ‘O my people! Certainly I communicated to you the message of my Lord, and I was your well-wisher, but you did not like well-wishers.’
وَلُوطًا إِذْ قَالَ لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ أَتَأْتُونَ ٱلْفَـٰحِشَةَ مَا سَبَقَكُم بِهَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ مِّنَ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
wa-lūṭan ˈiḏ qāla li-qawmihī ˈa-taˈtūna l-fāḥišata mā sabaqakum bihā min ˈaḥadin mina l-ʿālamīna
And Lot, when he said to his people, ‘What! Do you commit an outrage none in the world ever committed before you?!
إِنَّكُمْ لَتَأْتُونَ ٱلرِّجَالَ شَهْوَةً مِّن دُونِ ٱلنِّسَآءِ ۚ بَلْ أَنتُمْ قَوْمٌ مُّسْرِفُونَ
ˈinnakum la-taˈtūna r-riǧāla šahwatan min dūni n-nisāˈi bal ˈantum qawmun musrifūna
Indeed you come to men with desire instead of women! Indeed, you are a profligate lot.’
وَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوْمِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوٓا۟ أَخْرِجُوهُم مِّن قَرْيَتِكُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ أُنَاسٌ يَتَطَهَّرُونَ
wa-mā kāna ǧawāba qawmihī ˈillā ˈan qālū ˈaḫriǧūhum min qaryatikum ˈinnahum ˈunāsun yataṭahharūna
But the only answer of his people was that they said, ‘Expel them from your town! They are indeed a puritanical lot.’
فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ كَانَتْ مِنَ ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ
fa-ˈanǧaynāhu wa-ˈahlahū ˈillā mraˈatahū kānat mina l-ġābirīna
Thereupon We delivered him and his family, except his wife; she was one of those who remained behind.
وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِم مَّطَرًا ۖ فَٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
wa-ˈamṭarnā ʿalayhim maṭaran fa-nẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-muǧrimīna
Then We poured down upon them a rain [of stones]. So observe how was the fate of the guilty!
وَإِلَىٰ مَدْيَنَ أَخَاهُمْ شُعَيْبًا ۗ قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَـٰهٍ غَيْرُهُۥ ۖ قَدْ جَآءَتْكُم بَيِّنَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ فَأَوْفُوا۟ ٱلْكَيْلَ وَٱلْمِيزَانَ وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشْيَآءَهُمْ وَلَا تُفْسِدُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ بَعْدَ إِصْلَـٰحِهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
wa-ˈilā madyana ˈaḫāhum šuʿayban qāla yā-qawmi ʿbudū llāha mā lakum min ˈilāhin ġayruhū qad ǧāˈatkum bayyinatun min rabbikum fa-ˈawfū l-kayla wa-l-mīzāna wa-lā tabḫasū n-nāsa ˈašyāˈahum wa-lā tufsidū fī l-ˈarḍi baʿda ˈiṣlāḥihā ḏālikum ḫayrun lakum ˈin kuntum muˈminīna
And to [the people of] Midian [We sent] Shu‘ayb, their brother. He said, ‘O my people, worship Allah! You have no other god besides Him. There has certainly come to you a manifest proof from your Lord. Observe fully the measure and the balance, and do not cheat the people of their goods, and do not cause corruption on the earth after its restoration. That is better for you, if you are faithful.
وَلَا تَقْعُدُوا۟ بِكُلِّ صِرَٰطٍ تُوعِدُونَ وَتَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ مَنْ ءَامَنَ بِهِۦ وَتَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًا ۚ وَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟ إِذْ كُنتُمْ قَلِيلًا فَكَثَّرَكُمْ ۖ وَٱنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ
wa-lā taqʿudū bi-kulli ṣirāṭin tūʿidūna wa-taṣuddūna ʿan sabīli llāhi man ˈāmana bihī wa-tabġūnahā ʿiwaǧan wa-ḏkurū ˈiḏ kuntum qalīlan fa-kaṯṯarakum wa-nẓurū kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mufsidīna
And do not lie in wait on every road to threaten and bar those who have faith in Him from the way of Allah, seeking to make it crooked. Remember when you were few, and He multiplied you, and observe how was the fate of the agents of corruption.
وَإِن كَانَ طَآئِفَةٌ مِّنكُمْ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱلَّذِىٓ أُرْسِلْتُ بِهِۦ وَطَآئِفَةٌ لَّمْ يُؤْمِنُوا۟ فَٱصْبِرُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يَحْكُمَ ٱللَّهُ بَيْنَنَا ۚ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ ٱلْحَـٰكِمِينَ
wa-ˈin kāna ṭāˈifatun minkum ˈāmanū bi-llaḏī ˈursiltu bihī wa-ṭāˈifatun lam yuˈminū fa-ṣbirū ḥattā yaḥkuma llāhu baynanā wa-huwa ḫayru l-ḥākimīna
If a group of you have believed in what I have been sent with, and a group have not believed, be patient until Allah judges between us, and He is the best of judges.’
قَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ مِن قَوْمِهِۦ لَنُخْرِجَنَّكَ يَـٰشُعَيْبُ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَكَ مِن قَرْيَتِنَآ أَوْ لَتَعُودُنَّ فِى مِلَّتِنَا ۚ قَالَ أَوَلَوْ كُنَّا كَـٰرِهِينَ
qāla l-malaˈu llaḏīna stakbarū min qawmihī la-nuḫriǧannaka yā-šuʿaybu wa-llaḏīna ˈāmanū maʿaka min qaryatinā ˈaw la-taʿūdunna fī millatinā qāla ˈa-wa-law kunnā kārihīna
The elite of his people who were arrogant said, ‘O Shu'ayb, we will surely expel you and the faithful who are with you from our town, or else you shall revert to our creed.’ He said, ‘What! Even if we should be unwilling?!
قَدِ ٱفْتَرَيْنَا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا إِنْ عُدْنَا فِى مِلَّتِكُم بَعْدَ إِذْ نَجَّىٰنَا ٱللَّهُ مِنْهَا ۚ وَمَا يَكُونُ لَنَآ أَن نَّعُودَ فِيهَآ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّنَا ۚ وَسِعَ رَبُّنَا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ عِلْمًا ۚ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا ٱفْتَحْ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ قَوْمِنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْفَـٰتِحِينَ
qadi ftaraynā ʿalā llāhi kaḏiban ˈin ʿudnā fī millatikum baʿda ˈiḏ naǧǧānā llāhu minhā wa-mā yakūnu lanā ˈan naʿūda fīhā ˈillā ˈan yašāˈa llāhu rabbunā wasiʿa rabbunā kulla šayˈin ʿilman ʿalā llāhi tawakkalnā rabbanā ftaḥ baynanā wa-bayna qawminā bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-ˈanta ḫayru l-fātiḥīna
We would be fabricating a lie against Allah should we revert to your creed after Allah had delivered us from it. It does not behoove us to return to it, unless Allah, our Lord, should wish so. Our Lord embraces all things in [His] knowledge. In Allah we have put our trust.’ ‘Our Lord! Judge justly between us and our people, and You are the best of judges!’
وَقَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَوْمِهِۦ لَئِنِ ٱتَّبَعْتُمْ شُعَيْبًا إِنَّكُمْ إِذًا لَّخَـٰسِرُونَ
wa-qāla l-malaˈu llaḏīna kafarū min qawmihī la-ˈini ttabaʿtum šuʿayban ˈinnakum ˈiḏan la-ḫāsirūna
The elite of his people who were faithless said, ‘If you follow Shu'ayb, you will indeed be losers.’
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلرَّجْفَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ فِى دَارِهِمْ جَـٰثِمِينَ
fa-ˈaḫaḏathumu r-raǧfatu fa-ˈaṣbaḥū fī dārihim ǧāṯimīna
So the earthquake seized them, and they lay lifeless prostrate in their homes.
ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ شُعَيْبًا كَأَن لَّمْ يَغْنَوْا۟ فِيهَا ۚ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ شُعَيْبًا كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ
allaḏīna kaḏḏabū šuʿayban ka-ˈan lam yaġnaw fīhā llaḏīna kaḏḏabū šuʿayban kānū humu l-ḫāsirīna
Those who impugned Shu'ayb became as if they had never lived there. Those who impugned Shu‘ayb were themselves the losers.
فَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ لَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ رَبِّى وَنَصَحْتُ لَكُمْ ۖ فَكَيْفَ ءَاسَىٰ عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ كَـٰفِرِينَ
fa-tawallā ʿanhum wa-qāla yā-qawmi la-qad ˈablaġtukum risālāti rabbī wa-naṣaḥtu lakum fa-kayfa ˈāsā ʿalā qawmin kāfirīna
So he abandoned them [to their fate] and said, ‘O my people! Certainly, I communicated to you the messages of my Lord, and I was your well-wisher. So how should I grieve for a faithless lot?’
وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا فِى قَرْيَةٍ مِّن نَّبِىٍّ إِلَّآ أَخَذْنَآ أَهْلَهَا بِٱلْبَأْسَآءِ وَٱلضَّرَّآءِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَضَّرَّعُونَ
wa-mā ˈarsalnā fī qaryatin min nabiyyin ˈillā ˈaḫaḏnā ˈahlahā bi-l-baˈsāˈi wa-ḍ-ḍarrāˈi laʿallahum yaḍḍarraʿūna
We did not send a prophet to any town without visiting its people with stress and distress so that they might entreat [for Allah’s forgiveness].
ثُمَّ بَدَّلْنَا مَكَانَ ٱلسَّيِّئَةِ ٱلْحَسَنَةَ حَتَّىٰ عَفَوا۟ وَّقَالُوا۟ قَدْ مَسَّ ءَابَآءَنَا ٱلضَّرَّآءُ وَٱلسَّرَّآءُ فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُم بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
ṯumma baddalnā makāna s-sayyiˈati l-ḥasanata ḥattā ʿafaw wa-qālū qad massa ˈābāˈanā ḍ-ḍarrāˈu wa-s-sarrāˈu fa-ˈaḫaḏnāhum baġtatan wa-hum lā yašʿurūna
Then We changed the ill [conditions] to good until they multiplied [in numbers] and said, ‘Adversity and ease befell our fathers [too].’ Then We seized them suddenly while they were unaware.
وَلَوْ أَنَّ أَهْلَ ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱتَّقَوْا۟ لَفَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَرَكَـٰتٍ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَـٰكِن كَذَّبُوا۟ فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
wa-law ˈanna ˈahla l-qurā ˈāmanū wa-ttaqaw la-fataḥnā ʿalayhim barakātin mina s-samāˈi wa-l-ˈarḍi wa-lākin kaḏḏabū fa-ˈaḫaḏnāhum bi-mā kānū yaksibūna
If the people of the towns had been faithful and Godwary, We would have opened to them blessings from the heaven and the earth. But they denied; so We seized them because of what they used to earn.
أَفَأَمِنَ أَهْلُ ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ أَن يَأْتِيَهُم بَأْسُنَا بَيَـٰتًا وَهُمْ نَآئِمُونَ
ˈa-fa-ˈamina ˈahlu l-qurā ˈan yaˈtiyahum baˈsunā bayātan wa-hum nāˈimūna
Do the people of the towns feel secure from Our punishment overtaking them at night while they are asleep?
أَوَأَمِنَ أَهْلُ ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ أَن يَأْتِيَهُم بَأْسُنَا ضُحًى وَهُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ
ˈawa ˈamina ˈahlu l-qurā ˈan yaˈtiyahum baˈsunā ḍuḥan wa-hum yalʿabūna
Do the people of the towns feel secure from Our punishment overtaking them at midday while they are playing around?
أَفَأَمِنُوا۟ مَكْرَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ فَلَا يَأْمَنُ مَكْرَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلْقَوْمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ
ˈa-fa-ˈaminū makra llāhi fa-lā yaˈmanu makra llāhi ˈillā l-qawmu l-ḫāsirūna
Do they feel secure from Allah’s devising? No one feels secure from Allah’s devising except the people who are losers.
أَوَلَمْ يَهْدِ لِلَّذِينَ يَرِثُونَ ٱلْأَرْضَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَهْلِهَآ أَن لَّوْ نَشَآءُ أَصَبْنَـٰهُم بِذُنُوبِهِمْ ۚ وَنَطْبَعُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَسْمَعُونَ
ˈa-wa-lam yahdi li-llaḏīna yariṯūna l-ˈarḍa min baʿdi ˈahlihā ˈan law našāˈu ˈaṣabnāhum bi-ḏunūbihim wa-naṭbaʿu ʿalā qulūbihim fa-hum lā yasmaʿūna
Does it not dawn upon those who inherited the earth after its [former] inhabitants that if We wish We will punish them for their sins, and set a seal on their hearts so they would not hear?
تِلْكَ ٱلْقُرَىٰ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآئِهَا ۚ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ فَمَا كَانُوا۟ لِيُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِمَا كَذَّبُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يَطْبَعُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
tilka l-qurā naquṣṣu ʿalayka min ˈanbāˈihā wa-la-qad ǧāˈathum rusuluhum bi-l-bayyināti fa-mā kānū li-yuˈminū bi-mā kaḏḏabū min qablu ka-ḏālika yaṭbaʿu llāhu ʿalā qulūbi l-kāfirīna
These are the towns some of whose accounts We recount to you. Their apostles certainly brought them manifest proofs, but they were not the ones to believe in what they had denied earlier. Thus does Allah put a seal on the hearts of the faithless.
وَمَا وَجَدْنَا لِأَكْثَرِهِم مِّنْ عَهْدٍ ۖ وَإِن وَجَدْنَآ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَفَـٰسِقِينَ
wa-mā waǧadnā li-ˈakṯarihim min ʿahdin wa-ˈin waǧadnā ˈakṯarahum la-fāsiqīna
We did not find in most of them any [loyalty to] covenants. Indeed, We found most of them to be transgressors.
ثُمَّ بَعَثْنَا مِنۢ بَعْدِهِم مُّوسَىٰ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَإِي۟هِۦ فَظَلَمُوا۟ بِهَا ۖ فَٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ
ṯumma baʿaṯnā min baʿdihim mūsā bi-ˈāyātinā ˈilā firʿawna wa-malaˈihī fa-ẓalamū bihā fa-nẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mufsidīna
Then after them We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his elite, but they wronged them. So observe how was the fate of the agents of corruption!
وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ يَـٰفِرْعَوْنُ إِنِّى رَسُولٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
wa-qāla mūsā yā-firʿawnu ˈinnī rasūlun min rabbi l-ʿālamīna
And Moses said, ‘O Pharaoh, I am indeed an apostle from the Lord of all the worlds.
حَقِيقٌ عَلَىٰٓ أَن لَّآ أَقُولَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلْحَقَّ ۚ قَدْ جِئْتُكُم بِبَيِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ فَأَرْسِلْ مَعِىَ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ
ḥaqīqun ʿalā ˈan lā ˈaqūla ʿalā llāhi ˈillā l-ḥaqqa qad ǧiˈtukum bi-bayyinatin min rabbikum fa-ˈarsil maʿiya banī ˈisrāˈīla
It behooves me to say nothing about Allah except the truth. I certainly bring you a manifest proof from your Lord. So let the Children of Israel go with me.’
قَالَ إِن كُنتَ جِئْتَ بِـَٔايَةٍ فَأْتِ بِهَآ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
qāla ˈin kunta ǧiˈta bi-ˈāyatin fa-ˈti bihā ˈin kunta mina ṣ-ṣādiqīna
He said, ‘If you have brought a sign, produce it, should you be truthful.’
فَأَلْقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِىَ ثُعْبَانٌ مُّبِينٌ
fa-ˈalqā ʿaṣāhu fa-ˈiḏā hiya ṯuʿbānun mubīnun
Thereat he threw down his staff, and behold, it became a manifest python.
وَنَزَعَ يَدَهُۥ فَإِذَا هِىَ بَيْضَآءُ لِلنَّـٰظِرِينَ
wa-nazaʿa yadahū fa-ˈiḏā hiya bayḍāˈu li-n-nāẓirīna
Then he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to the onlookers.
قَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ مِن قَوْمِ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ عَلِيمٌ
qāla l-malaˈu min qawmi firʿawna ˈinna hāḏā la-sāḥirun ʿalīmun
The elite of Pharaoh’s people said, ‘This is indeed an expert magician;
يُرِيدُ أَن يُخْرِجَكُم مِّنْ أَرْضِكُمْ ۖ فَمَاذَا تَأْمُرُونَ
yurīdu ˈan yuḫriǧakum min ˈarḍikum fa-māḏā taˈmurūna
he seeks to expel you from your land.’ ‘So what do you advise?’
قَالُوٓا۟ أَرْجِهْ وَأَخَاهُ وَأَرْسِلْ فِى ٱلْمَدَآئِنِ حَـٰشِرِينَ
qālū ˈarǧih wa-ˈaḫāhu wa-ˈarsil fī l-madāˈini ḥāširīna
They said, ‘Put him and his brother off for a while, and send heralds to the cities,
يَأْتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَـٰحِرٍ عَلِيمٍ
yaˈtūka bi-kulli sāḥirin ʿalīmin
to bring you every expert magician.’
وَجَآءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ فِرْعَوْنَ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ لَنَا لَأَجْرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحْنُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبِينَ
wa-ǧāˈa s-saḥaratu firʿawna qālū ˈinna lanā la-ˈaǧran ˈin kunnā naḥnu l-ġālibīna
And the magicians came to Pharaoh. They said, ‘We shall indeed have a reward if we were to be the victors?’
قَالَ نَعَمْ وَإِنَّكُمْ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ
qāla naʿam wa-ˈinnakum la-mina l-muqarrabīna
He said, ‘Of course! And indeed you shall be among those near [to me].’
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِمَّآ أَن تُلْقِىَ وَإِمَّآ أَن نَّكُونَ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُلْقِينَ
qālū yā-mūsā ˈimmā ˈan tulqiya wa-ˈimmā ˈan nakūna naḥnu l-mulqīna
They said, ‘O Moses, will you throw [first], or shall we throw?’
قَالَ أَلْقُوا۟ ۖ فَلَمَّآ أَلْقَوْا۟ سَحَرُوٓا۟ أَعْيُنَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَٱسْتَرْهَبُوهُمْ وَجَآءُو بِسِحْرٍ عَظِيمٍ
qāla ˈalqū fa-lammā ˈalqaw saḥarū ˈaʿyuna n-nāsi wa-starhabūhum wa-ǧāˈū bi-siḥrin ʿaẓīmin
He said, ‘Throw [yours].’ So when they threw, they bewitched the people’s eyes and overawed them, producing a tremendous magic.
وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنْ أَلْقِ عَصَاكَ ۖ فَإِذَا هِىَ تَلْقَفُ مَا يَأْفِكُونَ
wa-ˈawḥaynā ˈilā mūsā ˈan ˈalqi ʿaṣāka fa-ˈiḏā hiya talqafu mā yaˈfikūna
And We signalled to Moses: ‘Throw down your staff.’ And behold, it was swallowing what they had faked.
فَوَقَعَ ٱلْحَقُّ وَبَطَلَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
fa-waqaʿa l-ḥaqqu wa-baṭala mā kānū yaʿmalūna
So the truth came out, and what they had wrought was reduced to naught.
فَغُلِبُوا۟ هُنَالِكَ وَٱنقَلَبُوا۟ صَـٰغِرِينَ
fa-ġulibū hunālika wa-nqalabū ṣāġirīna
Thereat they were vanquished, and they retreated, humiliated.
وَأُلْقِىَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَـٰجِدِينَ
wa-ˈulqiya s-saḥaratu sāǧidīna
And the magicians fell down in prostration.
قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
qālū ˈāmannā bi-rabbi l-ʿālamīna
They said, ‘We have believed in the Lord of all the worlds,
رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ
rabbi mūsā wa-hārūna
the Lord of Moses and Aaron.’
قَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ ءَامَنتُم بِهِۦ قَبْلَ أَنْ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمْ ۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَمَكْرٌ مَّكَرْتُمُوهُ فِى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ لِتُخْرِجُوا۟ مِنْهَآ أَهْلَهَا ۖ فَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ
qāla firʿawnu ˈāmantum bihī qabla ˈan ˈāḏana lakum ˈinna hāḏā la-makrun makartumūhu fī l-madīnati li-tuḫriǧū minhā ˈahlahā fa-sawfa taʿlamūna
Pharaoh said, ‘Do you profess faith in Him before I may permit you? It is indeed a plot you have devised in the city to expel its people from it. Soon you will know [the consequences]!
لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَيْدِيَكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُم مِّنْ خِلَـٰفٍ ثُمَّ لَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
la-ˈuqaṭṭiʿanna ˈaydiyakum wa-ˈarǧulakum min ḫilāfin ṯumma la-ˈuṣallibannakum ˈaǧmaʿīna
Surely I will cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and then I will surely crucify all of you.’
قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ
qālū ˈinnā ˈilā rabbinā munqalibūna
They said, ‘Indeed we shall return to our Lord.
وَمَا تَنقِمُ مِنَّآ إِلَّآ أَنْ ءَامَنَّا بِـَٔايَـٰتِ رَبِّنَا لَمَّا جَآءَتْنَا ۚ رَبَّنَآ أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا وَتَوَفَّنَا مُسْلِمِينَ
wa-mā tanqimu minnā ˈillā ˈan ˈāmannā bi-ˈāyāti rabbinā lammā ǧāˈatnā rabbanā ˈafriġ ʿalaynā ṣabran wa-tawaffanā muslimīna
You are vindictive toward us only because we have believed in the signs of our Lord, when they came to us.’ ‘Our Lord! Pour patience upon us, and grant us to die as Muslims.’
وَقَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ مِن قَوْمِ فِرْعَوْنَ أَتَذَرُ مُوسَىٰ وَقَوْمَهُۥ لِيُفْسِدُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَيَذَرَكَ وَءَالِهَتَكَ ۚ قَالَ سَنُقَتِّلُ أَبْنَآءَهُمْ وَنَسْتَحْىِۦ نِسَآءَهُمْ وَإِنَّا فَوْقَهُمْ قَـٰهِرُونَ
wa-qāla l-malaˈu min qawmi firʿawna ˈa-taḏaru mūsā wa-qawmahū li-yufsidū fī l-ˈarḍi wa-yaḏaraka wa-ˈālihataka qāla sa-nuqattilu ˈabnāˈahum wa-nastaḥyī nisāˈahum wa-ˈinnā fawqahum qāhirūna
The elite of Pharaoh’s people said, ‘Will you leave Moses and his people to cause corruption in the land, and to abandon you and your gods?’ He said, ‘We will kill their sons and spare their women, and indeed we are dominant over them.’
قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِ ٱسْتَعِينُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱصْبِرُوٓا۟ ۖ إِنَّ ٱلْأَرْضَ لِلَّهِ يُورِثُهَا مَن يَشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِۦ ۖ وَٱلْعَـٰقِبَةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
qāla mūsā li-qawmihi staʿīnū bi-llāhi wa-ṣbirū ˈinna l-ˈarḍa li-llāhi yūriṯuhā man yašāˈu min ʿibādihī wa-l-ʿāqibatu li-l-muttaqīna
Moses said to his people, ‘Turn to Allah for help and be patient. The earth indeed belongs to Allah, and He gives its inheritance to whomever He wishes of His servants, and the outcome will be in favour of the Godwary.’
قَالُوٓا۟ أُوذِينَا مِن قَبْلِ أَن تَأْتِيَنَا وَمِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا جِئْتَنَا ۚ قَالَ عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمْ أَن يُهْلِكَ عَدُوَّكُمْ وَيَسْتَخْلِفَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرَ كَيْفَ تَعْمَلُونَ
qālū ˈūḏīnā min qabli ˈan taˈtiyanā wa-min baʿdi mā ǧiˈtanā qāla ʿasā rabbukum ˈan yuhlika ʿaduwwakum wa-yastaḫlifakum fī l-ˈarḍi fa-yanẓura kayfa taʿmalūna
They said, ‘We were tormented before you came to us and [also] after you came to us.’ He said, ‘Maybe your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you successors in the land, and then He will see how you act.’
وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْنَآ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ بِٱلسِّنِينَ وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ
wa-la-qad ˈaḫaḏnā ˈāla firʿawna bi-s-sinīna wa-naqṣin mina ṯ-ṯamarāti laʿallahum yaḏḏakkarūna
Certainly We afflicted Pharaoh’s clan with droughts and loss of produce, so that they may take admonition.
فَإِذَا جَآءَتْهُمُ ٱلْحَسَنَةُ قَالُوا۟ لَنَا هَـٰذِهِۦ ۖ وَإِن تُصِبْهُمْ سَيِّئَةٌ يَطَّيَّرُوا۟ بِمُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥٓ ۗ أَلَآ إِنَّمَا طَـٰٓئِرُهُمْ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
fa-ˈiḏā ǧāˈathumu l-ḥasanatu qālū lanā hāḏihī wa-ˈin tuṣibhum sayyiˈatun yaṭṭayyarū bi-mūsā wa-man maʿahū ˈa-lā ˈinnamā ṭāˈiruhum ʿinda llāhi wa-lākinna ˈakṯarahum lā yaʿlamūna
But whenever any good came to them, they would say, ‘This is our due.’ And if any ill visited them, they took it for ill omens attending Moses and those who were with him. (Look! Indeed the cause of their ill omens is from Allah, but most of them do not know.)
وَقَالُوا۟ مَهْمَا تَأْتِنَا بِهِۦ مِنْ ءَايَةٍ لِّتَسْحَرَنَا بِهَا فَمَا نَحْنُ لَكَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ
wa-qālū mahmā taˈtinā bihī min ˈāyatin li-tasḥaranā bihā fa-mā naḥnu laka bi-muˈminīna
And they said, ‘Whatever sign you may bring us to bewitch us, we are not going to believe you.’
فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلطُّوفَانَ وَٱلْجَرَادَ وَٱلْقُمَّلَ وَٱلضَّفَادِعَ وَٱلدَّمَ ءَايَـٰتٍ مُّفَصَّلَـٰتٍ فَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا مُّجْرِمِينَ
fa-ˈarsalnā ʿalayhimu ṭ-ṭūfāna wa-l-ǧarāda wa-l-qummala wa-ḍ-ḍafādiʿa wa-d-dama ˈāyātin mufaṣṣalātin fa-stakbarū wa-kānū qawman muǧrimīna
So We sent against them a flood and locusts, lice, frogs and blood, as distinct signs. But they acted arrogantly, and they were a guilty lot.
وَلَمَّا وَقَعَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلرِّجْزُ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰمُوسَى ٱدْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ بِمَا عَهِدَ عِندَكَ ۖ لَئِن كَشَفْتَ عَنَّا ٱلرِّجْزَ لَنُؤْمِنَنَّ لَكَ وَلَنُرْسِلَنَّ مَعَكَ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ
wa-lammā waqaʿa ʿalayhimu r-riǧzu qālū yā-mūsā dʿu lanā rabbaka bi-mā ʿahida ʿindaka la-ˈin kašafta ʿannā r-riǧza la-nuˈminanna laka wa-la-nursilanna maʿaka banī ˈisrāˈīla
Whenever a plague fell upon them, they would say, ‘O Moses, invoke your Lord for us by the covenant He has made with you. If you remove the plague from us, we will certainly believe in you and let the Children of Israel go along with you.’
فَلَمَّا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُمُ ٱلرِّجْزَ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ هُم بَـٰلِغُوهُ إِذَا هُمْ يَنكُثُونَ
fa-lammā kašafnā ʿanhumu r-riǧza ˈilā ˈaǧalin hum bāliġūhu ˈiḏā hum yankuṯūna
But when We had removed the plague from them until a term that they should have completed, behold, they broke their promise.
فَٱنتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ فَأَغْرَقْنَـٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْيَمِّ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَكَانُوا۟ عَنْهَا غَـٰفِلِينَ
fa-ntaqamnā minhum fa-ˈaġraqnāhum fī l-yammi bi-ˈannahum kaḏḏabū bi-ˈāyātinā wa-kānū ʿanhā ġāfilīna
So We took vengeance on them and drowned them in the sea, for they denied Our signs and were oblivious to them.
وَأَوْرَثْنَا ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَانُوا۟ يُسْتَضْعَفُونَ مَشَـٰرِقَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَغَـٰرِبَهَا ٱلَّتِى بَـٰرَكْنَا فِيهَا ۖ وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ عَلَىٰ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا۟ ۖ وَدَمَّرْنَا مَا كَانَ يَصْنَعُ فِرْعَوْنُ وَقَوْمُهُۥ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْرِشُونَ
wa-ˈawraṯnā l-qawma llaḏīna kānū yustaḍʿafūna mašāriqa l-ˈarḍi wa-maġāribahā llatī bāraknā fīhā wa-tammat kalimatu rabbika l-ḥusnā ʿalā banī ˈisrāˈīla bi-mā ṣabarū wa-dammarnā mā kāna yaṣnaʿu firʿawnu wa-qawmuhū wa-mā kānū yaʿrišūna
We made the people who were abased the heirs to the east and west of the land which We had blessed, and your Lord’s best word [of promise] was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because of their patience, and We destroyed what Pharaoh and his people had built and what they used to erect.
وَجَـٰوَزْنَا بِبَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱلْبَحْرَ فَأَتَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ يَعْكُفُونَ عَلَىٰٓ أَصْنَامٍ لَّهُمْ ۚ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰمُوسَى ٱجْعَل لَّنَآ إِلَـٰهًا كَمَا لَهُمْ ءَالِهَةٌ ۚ قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ تَجْهَلُونَ
wa-ǧāwaznā bi-banī ˈisrāˈīla l-baḥra fa-ˈataw ʿalā qawmin yaʿkufūna ʿalā ˈaṣnāmin lahum qālū yā-mūsā ǧʿal lanā ˈilāhan ka-mā lahum ˈālihatun qāla ˈinnakum qawmun taǧhalūna
We carried the Children of Israel across the sea, whereat they came upon a people cleaving to certain idols that they had. They said, ‘O Moses, make for us a god like the gods that they have.’ He said, ‘You are indeed an ignorant lot.
إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ مُتَبَّرٌ مَّا هُمْ فِيهِ وَبَـٰطِلٌ مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
ˈinna hāˈulāˈi mutabbarun mā hum fīhi wa-bāṭilun mā kānū yaʿmalūna
What they are engaged in is indeed bound to perish, and what they have been doing shall come to naught.’
قَالَ أَغَيْرَ ٱللَّهِ أَبْغِيكُمْ إِلَـٰهًا وَهُوَ فَضَّلَكُمْ عَلَى ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
qāla ˈa-ġayra llāhi ˈabġīkum ˈilāhan wa-huwa faḍḍalakum ʿalā l-ʿālamīna
He said, ‘Shall I find you a god other than Allah, while He has graced you over all the nations?’
وَإِذْ أَنجَيْنَـٰكُم مِّنْ ءَالِ فِرْعَوْنَ يَسُومُونَكُمْ سُوٓءَ ٱلْعَذَابِ ۖ يُقَتِّلُونَ أَبْنَآءَكُمْ وَيَسْتَحْيُونَ نِسَآءَكُمْ ۚ وَفِى ذَٰلِكُم بَلَآءٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ عَظِيمٌ
wa-ˈiḏ ˈanǧaynākum min ˈāli firʿawna yasūmūnakum sūˈa l-ʿaḏābi yuqattilūna ˈabnāˈakum wa-yastaḥyūna nisāˈakum wa-fī ḏālikum balāˈun min rabbikum ʿaẓīmun
And when We delivered you from Pharaoh’s clan who inflicted on you a terrible torment, slaughtering your sons and sparing your women, and there was a great test in that from your Lord.
وَوَٰعَدْنَا مُوسَىٰ ثَلَـٰثِينَ لَيْلَةً وَأَتْمَمْنَـٰهَا بِعَشْرٍ فَتَمَّ مِيقَـٰتُ رَبِّهِۦٓ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً ۚ وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِأَخِيهِ هَـٰرُونَ ٱخْلُفْنِى فِى قَوْمِى وَأَصْلِحْ وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ سَبِيلَ ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ
wa-wāʿadnā mūsā ṯalāṯīna laylatan wa-ˈatmamnāhā bi-ʿašrin fa-tamma mīqātu rabbihī ˈarbaʿīna laylatan wa-qāla mūsā li-ˈaḫīhi hārūna ḫlufnī fī qawmī wa-ˈaṣliḥ wa-lā tattabiʿ sabīla l-mufsidīna
We made an appointment with Moses for thirty nights, and completed them with ten [more]; thus the tryst of his Lord was completed in forty nights. And Moses said to Aaron, his brother, ‘Be my successor among my people, and set things right and do not follow the way of the agents of corruption.’
وَلَمَّا جَآءَ مُوسَىٰ لِمِيقَـٰتِنَا وَكَلَّمَهُۥ رَبُّهُۥ قَالَ رَبِّ أَرِنِىٓ أَنظُرْ إِلَيْكَ ۚ قَالَ لَن تَرَىٰنِى وَلَـٰكِنِ ٱنظُرْ إِلَى ٱلْجَبَلِ فَإِنِ ٱسْتَقَرَّ مَكَانَهُۥ فَسَوْفَ تَرَىٰنِى ۚ فَلَمَّا تَجَلَّىٰ رَبُّهُۥ لِلْجَبَلِ جَعَلَهُۥ دَكًّا وَخَرَّ مُوسَىٰ صَعِقًا ۚ فَلَمَّآ أَفَاقَ قَالَ سُبْحَـٰنَكَ تُبْتُ إِلَيْكَ وَأَنَا۠ أَوَّلُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
wa-lammā ǧāˈa mūsā li-mīqātinā wa-kallamahū rabbuhū qāla rabbi ˈarinī ˈanẓur ˈilayka qāla lan tarānī wa-lākini nẓur ˈilā l-ǧabali fa-ˈini staqarra makānahū fa-sawfa tarānī fa-lammā taǧallā rabbuhū li-l-ǧabali ǧaʿalahū dakkan wa-ḫarra mūsā ṣaʿiqan fa-lammā ˈafāqa qāla subḥānaka tubtu ˈilayka wa-ˈana ˈawwalu l-muˈminīna
When Moses arrived at Our tryst and his Lord spoke to him, he said, ‘My Lord, show [Yourself] to me, that I may look at You!’ He said, ‘You shall not see Me. But look at the mountain: if it abides in its place, then you will see Me.’ So when his Lord disclosed Himself to the mountain, He levelled it, and Moses fell down swooning. When he recovered, he said, ‘Immaculate are You! I turn to You in penitence, and I am the first of the faithful.’
قَالَ يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِنِّى ٱصْطَفَيْتُكَ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ بِرِسَـٰلَـٰتِى وَبِكَلَـٰمِى فَخُذْ مَآ ءَاتَيْتُكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ
qāla yā-mūsā ˈinnī ṣṭafaytuka ʿalā n-nāsi bi-risālātī wa-bi-kalāmī fa-ḫuḏ mā ˈātaytuka wa-kun mina š-šākirīna
He said, ‘O Moses, I have chosen you over the people with My messages and My speech. So take what I give you, and be among the grateful.’
وَكَتَبْنَا لَهُۥ فِى ٱلْأَلْوَاحِ مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ مَّوْعِظَةً وَتَفْصِيلًا لِّكُلِّ شَىْءٍ فَخُذْهَا بِقُوَّةٍ وَأْمُرْ قَوْمَكَ يَأْخُذُوا۟ بِأَحْسَنِهَا ۚ سَأُو۟رِيكُمْ دَارَ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ
wa-katabnā lahū fī l-ˈalwāḥi min kulli šayˈin mawʿiẓatan wa-tafṣīlan li-kulli šayˈin fa-ḫuḏhā bi-quwwatin wa-ˈmur qawmaka yaˈḫuḏū bi-ˈaḥsanihā sa-ˈurīkum dāra l-fāsiqīna
We wrote for him in the tablets advice concerning all things and an elaboration of all things, [and We said], ‘Hold on to them with power, and bid your people to hold on to the best of [what is in] them. Soon I shall show you the abode of the transgressors.
سَأَصْرِفُ عَنْ ءَايَـٰتِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَتَكَبَّرُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ ٱلْحَقِّ وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ كُلَّ ءَايَةٍ لَّا يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِهَا وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ سَبِيلَ ٱلرُّشْدِ لَا يَتَّخِذُوهُ سَبِيلًا وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ سَبِيلَ ٱلْغَىِّ يَتَّخِذُوهُ سَبِيلًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَكَانُوا۟ عَنْهَا غَـٰفِلِينَ
sa-ˈaṣrifu ʿan ˈāyātiya llaḏīna yatakabbarūna fī l-ˈarḍi bi-ġayri l-ḥaqqi wa-ˈin yaraw kulla ˈāyatin lā yuˈminū bihā wa-ˈin yaraw sabīla r-rušdi lā yattaḫiḏūhu sabīlan wa-ˈin yaraw sabīla l-ġayyi yattaḫiḏūhu sabīlan ḏālika bi-ˈannahum kaḏḏabū bi-ˈāyātinā wa-kānū ʿanhā ġāfilīna
Soon I shall turn away from My signs those who are unduly arrogant in the earth: [even] though they should see every sign, they will not believe in it, and if they see the way of rectitude they will not take it as [their] way, and if they see the way of error they will take it as [their] way. That is because they deny Our signs and are oblivious to them.’
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَلِقَآءِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ ۚ هَلْ يُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
wa-llaḏīna kaḏḏabū bi-ˈāyātinā wa-liqāˈi l-ˈāḫirati ḥabiṭat ˈaʿmāluhum hal yuǧzawna ˈillā mā kānū yaʿmalūna
Those who deny Our signs and the encounter of the Hereafter, their works have failed. Shall they not be requited for what they used to do?
وَٱتَّخَذَ قَوْمُ مُوسَىٰ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ مِنْ حُلِيِّهِمْ عِجْلًا جَسَدًا لَّهُۥ خُوَارٌ ۚ أَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ أَنَّهُۥ لَا يُكَلِّمُهُمْ وَلَا يَهْدِيهِمْ سَبِيلًا ۘ ٱتَّخَذُوهُ وَكَانُوا۟ ظَـٰلِمِينَ
wa-ttaḫaḏa qawmu mūsā min baʿdihī min ḥuliyyihim ʿiǧlan ǧasadan lahū ḫuwārun ˈa-lam yaraw ˈannahū lā yukallimuhum wa-lā yahdīhim sabīlan-i ittaḫaḏūhu wa-kānū ẓālimīna
The people of Moses took up in his absence a calf [cast] from their ornaments—a body that gave out a lowing sound. Did they not regard that it did not speak to them, nor did it guide them to any way? They took it up [for worship] and they were wrongdoers.
وَلَمَّا سُقِطَ فِىٓ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَرَأَوْا۟ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ ضَلُّوا۟ قَالُوا۟ لَئِن لَّمْ يَرْحَمْنَا رَبُّنَا وَيَغْفِرْ لَنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ
wa-lammā suqiṭa fī ˈaydīhim wa-raˈaw ˈannahum qad ḍallū qālū la-ˈin lam yarḥamnā rabbunā wa-yaġfir lanā la-nakūnanna mina l-ḫāsirīna
But when they became remorseful and realised they had gone astray, they said, ‘Should our Lord have no mercy on us, and forgive us, we will be surely among the losers.’
وَلَمَّا رَجَعَ مُوسَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦ غَضْبَـٰنَ أَسِفًا قَالَ بِئْسَمَا خَلَفْتُمُونِى مِنۢ بَعْدِىٓ ۖ أَعَجِلْتُمْ أَمْرَ رَبِّكُمْ ۖ وَأَلْقَى ٱلْأَلْوَاحَ وَأَخَذَ بِرَأْسِ أَخِيهِ يَجُرُّهُۥٓ إِلَيْهِ ۚ قَالَ ٱبْنَ أُمَّ إِنَّ ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱسْتَضْعَفُونِى وَكَادُوا۟ يَقْتُلُونَنِى فَلَا تُشْمِتْ بِىَ ٱلْأَعْدَآءَ وَلَا تَجْعَلْنِى مَعَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
wa-lammā raǧaʿa mūsā ˈilā qawmihī ġaḍbāna ˈasifan qāla biˈsamā ḫalaftumūnī min baʿdī ˈa-ʿaǧiltum ˈamra rabbikum wa-ˈalqā l-ˈalwāḥa wa-ˈaḫaḏa bi-raˈsi ˈaḫīhi yaǧurruhū ˈilayhi qāla bna ˈumma ˈinna l-qawma staḍʿafūnī wa-kādū yaqtulūnanī fa-lā tušmit biya l-ˈaʿdāˈa wa-lā taǧʿalnī maʿa l-qawmi ẓ-ẓālimīna
When Moses returned to his people, angry and indignant, he said, ‘Evil has been your conduct in my absence! Would you hasten on the edict of your Lord?’ He threw down the tablets and seized his brother by the head, pulling him towards himself. He said, ‘Son of my mother, indeed this people thought me to be weak, and they were about to kill me. So do not let the enemies gloat over me, and do not take me with the wrongdoing lot.’
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَلِأَخِى وَأَدْخِلْنَا فِى رَحْمَتِكَ ۖ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ
qāla rabbi ġfir lī wa-li-ˈaḫī wa-ˈadḫilnā fī raḥmatika wa-ˈanta ˈarḥamu r-rāḥimīna
He said, ‘My Lord, forgive me and my brother, and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the most merciful of the merciful.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ ٱلْعِجْلَ سَيَنَالُهُمْ غَضَبٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ وَذِلَّةٌ فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُفْتَرِينَ
ˈinna llaḏīna ttaḫaḏū l-ʿiǧla sa-yanāluhum ġaḍabun min rabbihim wa-ḏillatun fī l-ḥayāti d-dunyā wa-ka-ḏālika naǧzī l-muftarīna
Indeed those who took up the calf [for worship] shall be overtaken by their Lord’s wrath and abasement in the life of the world.’ Thus do We requite the fabricators [of lies].
وَٱلَّذِينَ عَمِلُوا۟ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ ثُمَّ تَابُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِهَا وَءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهَا لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
wa-llaḏīna ʿamilū s-sayyiˈāti ṯumma tābū min baʿdihā wa-ˈāmanū ˈinna rabbaka min baʿdihā la-ġafūrun raḥīmun
Yet [to] those who commit misdeeds but repent after that, and believe—indeed, after that, your Lord shall surely be all-forgiving, all-merciful.
وَلَمَّا سَكَتَ عَن مُّوسَى ٱلْغَضَبُ أَخَذَ ٱلْأَلْوَاحَ ۖ وَفِى نُسْخَتِهَا هُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِرَبِّهِمْ يَرْهَبُونَ
wa-lammā sakata ʿan mūsā l-ġaḍabu ˈaḫaḏa l-ˈalwāḥa wa-fī nusḫatihā hudan wa-raḥmatun li-llaḏīna hum li-rabbihim yarhabūna
When Moses’ indignation abated, he picked up the tablets whose inscriptions contained guidance and mercy for those who are in awe of their Lord.
وَٱخْتَارَ مُوسَىٰ قَوْمَهُۥ سَبْعِينَ رَجُلًا لِّمِيقَـٰتِنَا ۖ فَلَمَّآ أَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلرَّجْفَةُ قَالَ رَبِّ لَوْ شِئْتَ أَهْلَكْتَهُم مِّن قَبْلُ وَإِيَّـٰىَ ۖ أَتُهْلِكُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ مِنَّآ ۖ إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّا فِتْنَتُكَ تُضِلُّ بِهَا مَن تَشَآءُ وَتَهْدِى مَن تَشَآءُ ۖ أَنتَ وَلِيُّنَا فَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا وَٱرْحَمْنَا ۖ وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْغَـٰفِرِينَ
wa-ḫtāra mūsā qawmahū sabʿīna raǧulan li-mīqātinā fa-lammā ˈaḫaḏathumu r-raǧfatu qāla rabbi law šiˈta ˈahlaktahum min qablu wa-ˈiyyāya ˈa-tuhlikunā bi-mā faʿala s-sufahāˈu minnā ˈin hiya ˈillā fitnatuka tuḍillu bihā man tašāˈu wa-tahdī man tašāˈu ˈanta waliyyunā fa-ġfir lanā wa-rḥamnā wa-ˈanta ḫayru l-ġāfirīna
Moses chose seventy men from his people for Our tryst, and when the earthquake seized them, he said, ‘My Lord, had You wished, You would have destroyed them and me before. Will You destroy us because of what the fools amongst us have done? It is only Your test, by which You lead astray whomever You wish and guide whomever You wish. You are our master, so forgive us and have mercy on us, for You are the best of those who forgive.
وَٱكْتُبْ لَنَا فِى هَـٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ إِنَّا هُدْنَآ إِلَيْكَ ۚ قَالَ عَذَابِىٓ أُصِيبُ بِهِۦ مَنْ أَشَآءُ ۖ وَرَحْمَتِى وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ ۚ فَسَأَكْتُبُهَا لِلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَ وَيُؤْتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
wa-ktub lanā fī hāḏihi d-dunyā ḥasanatan wa-fī l-ˈāḫirati ˈinnā hudnā ˈilayka qāla ʿaḏābī ˈuṣību bihī man ˈašāˈu wa-raḥmatī wasiʿat kulla šayˈin fa-sa-ˈaktubuhā li-llaḏīna yattaqūna wa-yuˈtūna z-zakāta wa-llaḏīna hum bi-ˈāyātinā yuˈminūna
And appoint goodness for us in this world and the Hereafter, for indeed we have come back to You.’ Said He, ‘I visit My punishment on whomever I wish, but My mercy embraces all things. Soon I shall appoint it for those who are Godwary and give the zakat and those who believe in Our signs
ٱلَّذِينَ يَتَّبِعُونَ ٱلرَّسُولَ ٱلنَّبِىَّ ٱلْأُمِّىَّ ٱلَّذِى يَجِدُونَهُۥ مَكْتُوبًا عِندَهُمْ فِى ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ وَٱلْإِنجِيلِ يَأْمُرُهُم بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَىٰهُمْ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيُحِلُّ لَهُمُ ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْخَبَـٰٓئِثَ وَيَضَعُ عَنْهُمْ إِصْرَهُمْ وَٱلْأَغْلَـٰلَ ٱلَّتِى كَانَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ فَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَعَزَّرُوهُ وَنَصَرُوهُ وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ ٱلنُّورَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ مَعَهُۥٓ ۙ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ
allaḏīna yattabiʿūna r-rasūla n-nabiyya l-ˈummiyya llaḏī yaǧidūnahū maktūban ʿindahum fī t-tawrāti wa-l-ˈinǧīli yaˈmuruhum bi-l-maʿrūfi wa-yanhāhum ʿani l-munkari wa-yuḥillu lahumu ṭ-ṭayyibāti wa-yuḥarrimu ʿalayhimu l-ḫabāˈiṯa wa-yaḍaʿu ʿanhum ˈiṣrahum wa-l-ˈaġlāla llatī kānat ʿalayhim fa-llaḏīna ˈāmanū bihī wa-ʿazzarūhu wa-naṣarūhu wa-ttabaʿū n-nūra llaḏī ˈunzila maʿahū ˈulāˈika humu l-mufliḥūna
—those who follow the Apostle, the untaught prophet, whose mention they find written with them in the Torah and the Evangel, who bids them to do what is right and forbids them from what is wrong, makes lawful to them all the good things and forbids them from all vicious things, and relieves them of their burdens and the shackles that were upon them—those who believe in him, honour him, and help him and follow the light that has been sent down with him, they are the felicitous.’
قُلْ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِنِّى رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَيْكُمْ جَمِيعًا ٱلَّذِى لَهُۥ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ ۖ فَـَٔامِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ٱلنَّبِىِّ ٱلْأُمِّىِّ ٱلَّذِى يُؤْمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦ وَٱتَّبِعُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُونَ
qul yā-ˈayyuhā n-nāsu ˈinnī rasūlu llāhi ˈilaykum ǧamīʿan-i llaḏī lahū mulku s-samāwāti wa-l-ˈarḍi lā ˈilāha ˈillā huwa yuḥyī wa-yumītu fa-ˈāminū bi-llāhi wa-rasūlihi n-nabiyyi l-ˈummiyyi llaḏī yuˈminu bi-llāhi wa-kalimātihī wa-ttabiʿūhu laʿallakum tahtadūna
Say, ‘O mankind! I am the Apostle of Allah to you all, [of Him] to whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. There is no god except Him. He gives life and brings death.’ So have faith in Allah and His Apostle, the untaught prophet, who has faith in Allah and His words, and follow him so that you may be guided.
وَمِن قَوْمِ مُوسَىٰٓ أُمَّةٌ يَهْدُونَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَبِهِۦ يَعْدِلُونَ
wa-min qawmi mūsā ˈummatun yahdūna bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-bihī yaʿdilūna
Among the people of Moses is a nation who guide [the people] by the truth and do justice thereby.
وَقَطَّعْنَـٰهُمُ ٱثْنَتَىْ عَشْرَةَ أَسْبَاطًا أُمَمًا ۚ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ إِذِ ٱسْتَسْقَىٰهُ قَوْمُهُۥٓ أَنِ ٱضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلْحَجَرَ ۖ فَٱنۢبَجَسَتْ مِنْهُ ٱثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ عَيْنًا ۖ قَدْ عَلِمَ كُلُّ أُنَاسٍ مَّشْرَبَهُمْ ۚ وَظَلَّلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْغَمَـٰمَ وَأَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْمَنَّ وَٱلسَّلْوَىٰ ۖ كُلُوا۟ مِن طَيِّبَـٰتِ مَا رَزَقْنَـٰكُمْ ۚ وَمَا ظَلَمُونَا وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ
wa-qaṭṭaʿnāhumu ṯnatay ʿašrata ˈasbāṭan ˈumaman wa-ˈawḥaynā ˈilā mūsā ˈiḏi stasqāhu qawmuhū ˈani ḍrib bi-ʿaṣāka l-ḥaǧara fa-nbaǧasat minhu ṯnatā ʿašrata ʿaynan qad ʿalima kullu ˈunāsin mašrabahum wa-ẓallalnā ʿalayhimu l-ġamāma wa-ˈanzalnā ʿalayhimu l-manna wa-s-salwā kulū min ṭayyibāti mā razaqnākum wa-mā ẓalamūnā wa-lākin kānū ˈanfusahum yaẓlimūna
We split them up into twelve tribal communities, and We revealed to Moses, when his people asked him for water, [saying], ‘Strike the rock with your staff,’ whereat twelve fountains gushed forth from it. Every tribe came to know its drinking-place. And We shaded them with clouds, and We sent down to them manna and quails: ‘Eat of the good things We have provided you.’ And they did not wrong Us, but they used to wrong [only] themselves.
وَإِذْ قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱسْكُنُوا۟ هَـٰذِهِ ٱلْقَرْيَةَ وَكُلُوا۟ مِنْهَا حَيْثُ شِئْتُمْ وَقُولُوا۟ حِطَّةٌ وَٱدْخُلُوا۟ ٱلْبَابَ سُجَّدًا نَّغْفِرْ لَكُمْ خَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِكُمْ ۚ سَنَزِيدُ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
wa-ˈiḏ qīla lahumu skunū hāḏihi l-qaryata wa-kulū minhā ḥayṯu šiˈtum wa-qūlū ḥiṭṭatun wa-dḫulū l-bāba suǧǧadan naġfir lakum ḫaṭīˈātikum sa-nazīdu l-muḥsinīna
And when they were told, ‘Settle in this town and eat thereof whence you wish; and say, ‘‘Relieve [us of the burden of our sins],’’ and enter prostrating at the gate, that We may forgive your iniquities, and soon We shall enhance the virtuous.’
فَبَدَّلَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ قَوْلًا غَيْرَ ٱلَّذِى قِيلَ لَهُمْ فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِجْزًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَظْلِمُونَ
fa-baddala llaḏīna ẓalamū minhum qawlan ġayra llaḏī qīla lahum fa-ˈarsalnā ʿalayhim riǧzan mina s-samāˈi bi-mā kānū yaẓlimūna
But the wrongdoers changed the saying with other than what they had been told. So We sent against them a plague from the sky because of the wrongs they used to commit.
وَسْـَٔلْهُمْ عَنِ ٱلْقَرْيَةِ ٱلَّتِى كَانَتْ حَاضِرَةَ ٱلْبَحْرِ إِذْ يَعْدُونَ فِى ٱلسَّبْتِ إِذْ تَأْتِيهِمْ حِيتَانُهُمْ يَوْمَ سَبْتِهِمْ شُرَّعًا وَيَوْمَ لَا يَسْبِتُونَ ۙ لَا تَأْتِيهِمْ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَبْلُوهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْسُقُونَ
wa-sˈalhum ʿani l-qaryati llatī kānat ḥāḍirata l-baḥri ˈiḏ yaʿdūna fī s-sabti ˈiḏ taˈtīhim ḥītānuhum yawma sabtihim šurraʿan wa-yawma lā yasbitūna lā taˈtīhim ka-ḏālika nablūhum bi-mā kānū yafsuqūna
Ask them about the town that was situated on the seaside, when they violated the Sabbath, when their fish would come to them on the Sabbath day, visibly on the shore, but on days when they were not keeping Sabbath they would not come to them. Thus did We test them because of the transgressions they used to commit.
وَإِذْ قَالَتْ أُمَّةٌ مِّنْهُمْ لِمَ تَعِظُونَ قَوْمًا ۙ ٱللَّهُ مُهْلِكُهُمْ أَوْ مُعَذِّبُهُمْ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا ۖ قَالُوا۟ مَعْذِرَةً إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمْ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ
wa-ˈiḏ qālat ˈummatun minhum li-ma taʿiẓūna qawman-i llāhu muhlikuhum ˈaw muʿaḏḏibuhum ʿaḏāban šadīdan qālū maʿḏiratan ˈilā rabbikum wa-laʿallahum yattaqūna
When a group of them said, ‘Why do you advise a people whom Allah will destroy, or punish with a severe punishment?’ They said, ‘As an excuse before your Lord, and [with the hope] that they may be Godwary.’
فَلَمَّا نَسُوا۟ مَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ بِهِۦٓ أَنجَيْنَا ٱلَّذِينَ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلسُّوٓءِ وَأَخَذْنَا ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ بِعَذَابٍۭ بَـِٔيسٍۭ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْسُقُونَ
fa-lammā nasū mā ḏukkirū bihī ˈanǧaynā llaḏīna yanhawna ʿani s-sūˈi wa-ˈaḫaḏnā llaḏīna ẓalamū bi-ʿaḏābin baˈīsin bi-mā kānū yafsuqūna
So when they forgot what they had been reminded of, We delivered those who forbade evil [conduct] and seized the wrongdoers with a terrible punishment because of the transgressions they used to commit.
فَلَمَّا عَتَوْا۟ عَن مَّا نُهُوا۟ عَنْهُ قُلْنَا لَهُمْ كُونُوا۟ قِرَدَةً خَـٰسِـِٔينَ
fa-lammā ʿataw ʿan mā nuhū ʿanhu qulnā lahum kūnū qiradatan ḫāsiˈīna
When they defied [the command pertaining to] what they were forbidden from, We said to them, ‘Be you spurned apes.’
وَإِذْ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكَ لَيَبْعَثَنَّ عَلَيْهِمْ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ مَن يَسُومُهُمْ سُوٓءَ ٱلْعَذَابِ ۗ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَسَرِيعُ ٱلْعِقَابِ ۖ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
wa-ˈiḏ taˈaḏḏana rabbuka la-yabʿaṯanna ʿalayhim ˈilā yawmi l-qiyāmati man yasūmuhum sūˈa l-ʿaḏābi ˈinna rabbaka la-sarīʿu l-ʿiqābi wa-ˈinnahū la-ġafūrun raḥīmun
And when your Lord proclaimed that He would surely send against them, until the Day of Resurrection, those who would inflict on them a terrible punishment. Indeed your Lord is swift in retribution, and indeed, He is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
وَقَطَّعْنَـٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أُمَمًا ۖ مِّنْهُمُ ٱلصَّـٰلِحُونَ وَمِنْهُمْ دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ وَبَلَوْنَـٰهُم بِٱلْحَسَنَـٰتِ وَٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ
wa-qaṭṭaʿnāhum fī l-ˈarḍi ˈumaman minhumu ṣ-ṣāliḥūna wa-minhum dūna ḏālika wa-balawnāhum bi-l-ḥasanāti wa-s-sayyiˈāti laʿallahum yarǧiʿūna
We dispersed them into communities around the earth: some of them were righteous, and some of them otherwise, and We tested them with good and bad [times] so that they may come back.
فَخَلَفَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ خَلْفٌ وَرِثُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ يَأْخُذُونَ عَرَضَ هَـٰذَا ٱلْأَدْنَىٰ وَيَقُولُونَ سَيُغْفَرُ لَنَا وَإِن يَأْتِهِمْ عَرَضٌ مِّثْلُهُۥ يَأْخُذُوهُ ۚ أَلَمْ يُؤْخَذْ عَلَيْهِم مِّيثَـٰقُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ أَن لَّا يَقُولُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلْحَقَّ وَدَرَسُوا۟ مَا فِيهِ ۗ وَٱلدَّارُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لِّلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَ ۗ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ
fa-ḫalafa min baʿdihim ḫalfun wariṯū l-kitāba yaˈḫuḏūna ʿaraḍa hāḏā l-ˈadnā wa-yaqūlūna sa-yuġfaru lanā wa-ˈin yaˈtihim ʿaraḍun miṯluhū yaˈḫuḏūhu ˈa-lam yuˈḫaḏ ʿalayhim mīṯāqu l-kitābi ˈan lā yaqūlū ʿalā llāhi ˈillā l-ḥaqqa wa-darasū mā fīhi wa-d-dāru l-ˈāḫiratu ḫayrun li-llaḏīna yattaqūna ˈa-fa-lā taʿqilūna
Then they were succeeded by an evil posterity, which inherited the Book: they grab the transitory gains of this lower world, and say, ‘It will be forgiven us.’ And if similar transitory gains were to come their way, they would grab them too. Was not the covenant of the Book taken with them that they shall not attribute anything to Allah except the truth? They have studied what is in it, and [know that] the abode of the Hereafter is better for those who are Godwary. Do you not exercise your reason?
وَٱلَّذِينَ يُمَسِّكُونَ بِٱلْكِتَـٰبِ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ إِنَّا لَا نُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُصْلِحِينَ
wa-llaḏīna yumassikūna bi-l-kitābi wa-ˈaqāmū ṣ-ṣalāta ˈinnā lā nuḍīʿu ˈaǧra l-muṣliḥīna
As for those who hold fast to the Book and maintain the prayer—indeed, We do not waste the reward of those who bring about reform.
وَإِذْ نَتَقْنَا ٱلْجَبَلَ فَوْقَهُمْ كَأَنَّهُۥ ظُلَّةٌ وَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَنَّهُۥ وَاقِعٌۢ بِهِمْ خُذُوا۟ مَآ ءَاتَيْنَـٰكُم بِقُوَّةٍ وَٱذْكُرُوا۟ مَا فِيهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ
wa-ˈiḏ nataqnā l-ǧabala fawqahum ka-ˈannahū ẓullatun wa-ẓannū ˈannahū wāqiʿun bihim ḫuḏū mā ˈātaynākum bi-quwwatin wa-ḏkurū mā fīhi laʿallakum tattaqūna
When We plucked the mountain [and held it] above them as if it were a canopy (and they thought it was about to fall on them): ‘Hold on with power to what We have given you and remember that which is in it, so that you may be Godwary.’
وَإِذْ أَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِنۢ بَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ مِن ظُهُورِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَأَشْهَدَهُمْ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ أَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ ۖ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ ۛ شَهِدْنَآ ۛ أَن تَقُولُوا۟ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ إِنَّا كُنَّا عَنْ هَـٰذَا غَـٰفِلِينَ
wa-ˈiḏ ˈaḫaḏa rabbuka min banī ˈādama min ẓuhūrihim ḏurriyyatahum wa-ˈašhadahum ʿalā ˈanfusihim ˈa-lastu bi-rabbikum qālū balā šahidnā ˈan taqūlū yawma l-qiyāmati ˈinnā kunnā ʿan hāḏā ġāfilīna
When your Lord took from the Children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants and made them bear witness over themselves, [He said to them,] ‘Am I not your Lord?’ They said, ‘Yes indeed! We bear witness.’ [This,] lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, ‘Indeed we were unaware of this,’
أَوْ تَقُولُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَآ أَشْرَكَ ءَابَآؤُنَا مِن قَبْلُ وَكُنَّا ذُرِّيَّةً مِّنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ ۖ أَفَتُهْلِكُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ ٱلْمُبْطِلُونَ
ˈaw taqūlū ˈinnamā ˈašraka ˈābāˈunā min qablu wa-kunnā ḏurriyyatan min baʿdihim ˈa-fa-tuhlikunā bi-mā faʿala l-mubṭilūna
or lest you should say, ‘Our fathers ascribed partners [to Allah] before [us] and we were descendants after them. Will You then destroy us because of what the falsifiers have done?’
وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ
wa-ka-ḏālika nufaṣṣilu l-ˈāyāti wa-laʿallahum yarǧiʿūna
Thus do We elaborate the signs, so that they may come back.
وَٱتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ ٱلَّذِىٓ ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ ءَايَـٰتِنَا فَٱنسَلَخَ مِنْهَا فَأَتْبَعَهُ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْغَاوِينَ
wa-tlu ʿalayhim nabaˈa llaḏī ˈātaynāhu ˈāyātinā fa-nsalaḫa minhā fa-ˈatbaʿahu š-šayṭānu fa-kāna mina l-ġāwīna
Relate to them an account of him to whom We gave Our signs, but he cast them off. Thereupon Satan pursued him, and he became one of the perverse.
وَلَوْ شِئْنَا لَرَفَعْنَـٰهُ بِهَا وَلَـٰكِنَّهُۥٓ أَخْلَدَ إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُ ۚ فَمَثَلُهُۥ كَمَثَلِ ٱلْكَلْبِ إِن تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْهِ يَلْهَثْ أَوْ تَتْرُكْهُ يَلْهَث ۚ ذَّٰلِكَ مَثَلُ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا ۚ فَٱقْصُصِ ٱلْقَصَصَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
wa-law šiˈnā la-rafaʿnāhu bihā wa-lākinnahū ˈaḫlada ˈilā l-ˈarḍi wa-ttabaʿa hawāhu fa-maṯaluhū ka-maṯali l-kalbi ˈin taḥmil ʿalayhi yalhaṯ ˈaw tatrukhu yalhaṯ ḏālika maṯalu l-qawmi llaḏīna kaḏḏabū bi-ˈāyātinā fa-qṣuṣi l-qaṣaṣa laʿallahum yatafakkarūna
Had We wished, We would have surely raised him by their means, but he clung to the earth and followed his [base] desires. So his parable is that of a dog: if you make for it, it lolls out its tongue, and if you let it alone, it lolls out its tongue. Such is the parable of the people who deny Our signs. So recount these narratives, so that they may reflect.
سَآءَ مَثَلًا ٱلْقَوْمُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَأَنفُسَهُمْ كَانُوا۟ يَظْلِمُونَ
sāˈa maṯalan-i l-qawmu llaḏīna kaḏḏabū bi-ˈāyātinā wa-ˈanfusahum kānū yaẓlimūna
Evil is the parable of the people who deny Our signs and wrong themselves.
مَن يَهْدِ ٱللَّهُ فَهُوَ ٱلْمُهْتَدِى ۖ وَمَن يُضْلِلْ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ
man yahdi llāhu fa-huwa l-muhtadī wa-man yuḍlil fa-ˈulāˈika humu l-ḫāsirūna
Whomever Allah guides is rightly guided, and whomever He leads astray—it is they who are the losers.
وَلَقَدْ ذَرَأْنَا لِجَهَنَّمَ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلْإِنسِ ۖ لَهُمْ قُلُوبٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ بِهَا وَلَهُمْ أَعْيُنٌ لَّا يُبْصِرُونَ بِهَا وَلَهُمْ ءَاذَانٌ لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ بِهَآ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ كَٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِ بَلْ هُمْ أَضَلُّ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْغَـٰفِلُونَ
wa-la-qad ḏaraˈnā li-ǧahannama kaṯīran mina l-ǧinni wa-l-ˈinsi lahum qulūbun lā yafqahūna bihā wa-lahum ˈaʿyunun lā yubṣirūna bihā wa-lahum ˈāḏānun lā yasmaʿūna bihā ˈulāˈika ka-l-ˈanʿāmi bal hum ˈaḍallu ˈulāˈika humu l-ġāfilūna
Certainly We have winnowed out for hell many of the jinn and humans: they have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, they have ears with which they do not hear. They are like cattle; indeed, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.
وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ فَٱدْعُوهُ بِهَا ۖ وَذَرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ يُلْحِدُونَ فِىٓ أَسْمَـٰٓئِهِۦ ۚ سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
wa-li-llāhi l-ˈasmāˈu l-ḥusnā fa-dʿūhu bihā wa-ḏarū llaḏīna yulḥidūna fī ˈasmāˈihī sa-yuǧzawna mā kānū yaʿmalūna
To Allah belong the Best Names, so supplicate Him by them, and abandon those who commit sacrilege in His names. Soon they shall be requited for what they used to do.
وَمِمَّنْ خَلَقْنَآ أُمَّةٌ يَهْدُونَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَبِهِۦ يَعْدِلُونَ
wa-mimman ḫalaqnā ˈummatun yahdūna bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-bihī yaʿdilūna
Among those We have created are a nation who guide by the truth and do justice thereby.
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
wa-llaḏīna kaḏḏabū bi-ˈāyātinā sa-nastadriǧuhum min hayṯu lā yaʿlamūna
As for those who deny Our signs, We will draw them imperceptibly [into ruin], whence they do not know.
وَأُمْلِى لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِى مَتِينٌ
wa-ˈumlī lahum ˈinna kaydī matīnun
And I will grant them respite, for My devising is indeed sure.
أَوَلَمْ يَتَفَكَّرُوا۟ ۗ مَا بِصَاحِبِهِم مِّن جِنَّةٍ ۚ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ
ˈa-wa-lam yatafakkarū mā bi-ṣāḥibihim min ǧinnatin ˈin huwa ˈillā naḏīrun mubīnun
Have they not reflected that there is no madness in their companion, [and that] he is just a manifest warner?
أَوَلَمْ يَنظُرُوا۟ فِى مَلَكُوتِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ مِن شَىْءٍ وَأَنْ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونَ قَدِ ٱقْتَرَبَ أَجَلُهُمْ ۖ فَبِأَىِّ حَدِيثٍۭ بَعْدَهُۥ يُؤْمِنُونَ
ˈa-wa-lam yanẓurū fī malakūti s-samāwāti wa-l-ˈarḍi wa-mā ḫalaqa llāhu min šayˈin wa-ˈan ʿasā ˈan yakūna qadi qtaraba ˈaǧaluhum fa-bi-ˈayyi ḥadīṯin baʿdahū yuˈminūna
Have they not contemplated the dominions of the heavens and the earth, and whatever things Allah has created, and that maybe their time has already drawn near? So what discourse will they believe after this?!
مَن يُضْلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَلَا هَادِىَ لَهُۥ ۚ وَيَذَرُهُمْ فِى طُغْيَـٰنِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ
man yuḍlili llāhu fa-lā hādiya lahū wa-yaḏaruhum fī ṭuġyānihim yaʿmahūna
Whomever Allah leads astray has no guide, and He leaves them bewildered in their rebellion.
يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَىٰهَا ۖ قُلْ إِنَّمَا عِلْمُهَا عِندَ رَبِّى ۖ لَا يُجَلِّيهَا لِوَقْتِهَآ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ ثَقُلَتْ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ لَا تَأْتِيكُمْ إِلَّا بَغْتَةً ۗ يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ كَأَنَّكَ حَفِىٌّ عَنْهَا ۖ قُلْ إِنَّمَا عِلْمُهَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
yasˈalūnaka ʿani s-sāʿati ˈayyāna mursāhā qul ˈinnamā ʿilmuhā ʿinda rabbī lā yuǧallīhā li-waqtihā ˈillā huwa ṯaqulat fī s-samāwāti wa-l-ˈarḍi lā taˈtīkum ˈillā baġtatan yasˈalūnaka ka-ˈannaka ḥafiyyun ʿanhā qul ˈinnamā ʿilmuhā ʿinda llāhi wa-lākinna ˈakṯara n-nāsi lā yaʿlamūna
They question you concerning the Hour, when will it set in? Say, ‘Its knowledge is only with my Lord: none except Him shall manifest it at its time. It will weigh heavy on the heavens and the earth. It will not overtake you but suddenly.’ They ask you as if you were in the know of it. Say, ‘Its knowledge is only with Allah, but most people do not know.’
قُل لَّآ أَمْلِكُ لِنَفْسِى نَفْعًا وَلَا ضَرًّا إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ وَلَوْ كُنتُ أَعْلَمُ ٱلْغَيْبَ لَٱسْتَكْثَرْتُ مِنَ ٱلْخَيْرِ وَمَا مَسَّنِىَ ٱلسُّوٓءُ ۚ إِنْ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِيرٌ وَبَشِيرٌ لِّقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ
qul lā ˈamliku li-nafsī nafʿan wa-lā ḍarran ˈillā mā šāˈa llāhu wa-law kuntu ˈaʿlamu l-ġayba la-stakṯartu mina l-ḫayri wa-mā massaniya s-sūˈu ˈin ˈana ˈillā naḏīrun wa-bašīrun li-qawmin yuˈminūna
Say, ‘I have no control over any benefit for myself, nor [over] any harm except what Allah may wish. Had I known the Unseen, I would have acquired much good, and no ill would have befallen me. I am only a warner and bearer of good news to a people who have faith.’
هُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَٰحِدَةٍ وَجَعَلَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا لِيَسْكُنَ إِلَيْهَا ۖ فَلَمَّا تَغَشَّىٰهَا حَمَلَتْ حَمْلًا خَفِيفًا فَمَرَّتْ بِهِۦ ۖ فَلَمَّآ أَثْقَلَت دَّعَوَا ٱللَّهَ رَبَّهُمَا لَئِنْ ءَاتَيْتَنَا صَـٰلِحًا لَّنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ
huwa llaḏī ḫalaqakum min nafsin wāḥidatin wa-ǧaʿala minhā zawǧahā li-yaskuna ˈilayhā fa-lammā taġaššāhā ḥamalat ḥamlan ḫafīfan fa-marrat bihī fa-lammā ˈaṯqalat daʿawā llāha rabbahumā la-ˈin ˈātaytanā ṣāliḥan la-nakūnanna mina š-šākirīna
It is He who created you from a single soul, and made from it its mate, that he might find comfort with her. So when he had covered her, she bore a light burden and passed [some time] with it. When she had grown heavy, they both invoked Allah, their Lord: ‘If You give us a healthy [child], we will be surely grateful.’
فَلَمَّآ ءَاتَىٰهُمَا صَـٰلِحًا جَعَلَا لَهُۥ شُرَكَآءَ فِيمَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمَا ۚ فَتَعَـٰلَى ٱللَّهُ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
fa-lammā ˈātāhumā ṣāliḥan ǧaʿalā lahū šurakāˈa fī-mā ˈātāhumā fa-taʿālā llāhu ʿammā yušrikūna
Then when He gave them a healthy [child], they ascribed partners to Him in what He had given them. Exalted is Allah above [having] any partners that they ascribe [to Him]!
أَيُشْرِكُونَ مَا لَا يَخْلُقُ شَيْـًٔا وَهُمْ يُخْلَقُونَ
ˈa-yušrikūna mā lā yaḫluqu šayˈan wa-hum yuḫlaqūna
Do they ascribe [to Him] partners that create nothing and have been created themselves,
وَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ لَهُمْ نَصْرًا وَلَآ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَنصُرُونَ
wa-lā yastaṭīʿūna lahum naṣran wa-lā ˈanfusahum yanṣurūna
and can neither help them, nor help themselves?
وَإِن تَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰ لَا يَتَّبِعُوكُمْ ۚ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيْكُمْ أَدَعَوْتُمُوهُمْ أَمْ أَنتُمْ صَـٰمِتُونَ
wa-ˈin tadʿūhum ˈilā l-hudā lā yattabiʿūkum sawāˈun ʿalaykum ˈa-daʿawtumūhum ˈam ˈantum ṣāmitūna
If you call them to guidance, they will not follow you: it is the same to you whether you call them or whether you are silent.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ عِبَادٌ أَمْثَالُكُمْ ۖ فَٱدْعُوهُمْ فَلْيَسْتَجِيبُوا۟ لَكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ
ˈinna llaḏīna tadʿūna min dūni llāhi ʿibādun ˈamṯālukum fa-dʿūhum fa-l-yastaǧībū lakum ˈin kuntum ṣādiqīna
Indeed those whom you invoke besides Allah are creatures like you. So invoke them: they should answer you, if you are truthful.
أَلَهُمْ أَرْجُلٌ يَمْشُونَ بِهَآ ۖ أَمْ لَهُمْ أَيْدٍ يَبْطِشُونَ بِهَآ ۖ أَمْ لَهُمْ أَعْيُنٌ يُبْصِرُونَ بِهَآ ۖ أَمْ لَهُمْ ءَاذَانٌ يَسْمَعُونَ بِهَا ۗ قُلِ ٱدْعُوا۟ شُرَكَآءَكُمْ ثُمَّ كِيدُونِ فَلَا تُنظِرُونِ
ˈa-lahum ˈarǧulun yamšūna bihā ˈam lahum ˈaydin yabṭišūna bihā ˈam lahum ˈaʿyunun yubṣirūna bihā ˈam lahum ˈāḏānun yasmaʿūna bihā quli dʿū šurakāˈakum ṯumma kīdūni fa-lā tunẓirūni
Do they have any feet to walk with? Do they have any hands to grasp with? Do they have any eyes to see with? Do they have any ears to hear with? Say, ‘Invoke your partners [that you ascribe to Allah] and try out your stratagems against me without granting me any respite.
إِنَّ وَلِـِّۧىَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى نَزَّلَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ ۖ وَهُوَ يَتَوَلَّى ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
ˈinna waliyyiya llāhu llaḏī nazzala l-kitāba wa-huwa yatawallā ṣ-ṣāliḥīna
My guardian is indeed Allah who sent down the Book, and He takes care of the righteous.
وَٱلَّذِينَ تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ نَصْرَكُمْ وَلَآ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَنصُرُونَ
wa-llaḏīna tadʿūna min dūnihī lā yastaṭīʿūna naṣrakum wa-lā ˈanfusahum yanṣurūna
Those whom you invoke besides Him can neither help you, nor help themselves.
وَإِن تَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰ لَا يَسْمَعُوا۟ ۖ وَتَرَىٰهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَيْكَ وَهُمْ لَا يُبْصِرُونَ
wa-ˈin tadʿūhum ˈilā l-hudā lā yasmaʿū wa-tarāhum yanẓurūna ˈilayka wa-hum lā yubṣirūna
If you call them to guidance, they will not hear. You see them facing you, but they do not see.’
خُذِ ٱلْعَفْوَ وَأْمُرْ بِٱلْعُرْفِ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ
ḫuḏi l-ʿafwa wa-ˈmur bi-l-ʿurfi wa-ˈaʿriḍ ʿani l-ǧāhilīna
Adopt [a policy of] excusing [the faults of people], bid what is right, and turn away from the ignorant.
وَإِمَّا يَنزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ نَزْغٌ فَٱسْتَعِذْ بِٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
wa-ˈimmā yanzaġannaka mina š-šayṭāni nazġun fa-staʿiḏ bi-llāhi ˈinnahū samīʿun ʿalīmun
Should a temptation from Satan disturb you, invoke the protection of Allah; indeed He is all-hearing, all-knowing.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوْا۟ إِذَا مَسَّهُمْ طَـٰٓئِفٌ مِّنَ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ تَذَكَّرُوا۟ فَإِذَا هُم مُّبْصِرُونَ
ˈinna llaḏīna ttaqaw ˈiḏā massahum ṭāˈifun mina š-šayṭāni taḏakkarū fa-ˈiḏā hum mubṣirūna
When those who are Godwary are touched by a visitation of Satan, they remember [Allah] and, behold, they perceive.
وَإِخْوَٰنُهُمْ يَمُدُّونَهُمْ فِى ٱلْغَىِّ ثُمَّ لَا يُقْصِرُونَ
wa-ˈiḫwānuhum yamuddūnahum fī l-ġayyi ṯumma lā yuqṣirūna
But their brethren, they draw them into error, and then they do not spare [any harm].
وَإِذَا لَمْ تَأْتِهِم بِـَٔايَةٍ قَالُوا۟ لَوْلَا ٱجْتَبَيْتَهَا ۚ قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَتَّبِعُ مَا يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ مِن رَّبِّى ۚ هَـٰذَا بَصَآئِرُ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ
wa-ˈiḏā lam taˈtihim bi-ˈāyatin qālū law-lā ǧtabaytahā qul ˈinnamā ˈattabiʿu mā yūḥā ˈilayya min rabbī hāḏā baṣāˈiru min rabbikum wa-hudan wa-raḥmatun li-qawmin yuˈminūna
When you do not bring them a sign, they say, ‘Why do you not improvise one?’ Say, ‘I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord; these are insights from your Lord, and a guidance and mercy for a people who have faith.’
وَإِذَا قُرِئَ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ فَٱسْتَمِعُوا۟ لَهُۥ وَأَنصِتُوا۟ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
wa-ˈiḏā quriˈa l-qurˈānu fa-stamiʿū lahū wa-ˈanṣitū laʿallakum turḥamūna
When the Quran is recited, listen to it and be silent, maybe you will receive [Allah’s] mercy.
وَٱذْكُر رَّبَّكَ فِى نَفْسِكَ تَضَرُّعًا وَخِيفَةً وَدُونَ ٱلْجَهْرِ مِنَ ٱلْقَوْلِ بِٱلْغُدُوِّ وَٱلْـَٔاصَالِ وَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْغَـٰفِلِينَ
wa-ḏkur rabbaka fī nafsika taḍarruʿan wa-ḫīfatan wa-dūna l-ǧahri mina l-qawli bi-l-ġuduwwi wa-l-ˈāṣāli wa-lā takun mina l-ġāfilīna
And remember your Lord within your heart beseechingly and reverentially, without being loud, morning, and evening, and do not be among the heedless.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ عِندَ رَبِّكَ لَا يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِهِۦ وَيُسَبِّحُونَهُۥ وَلَهُۥ يَسْجُدُونَ ۩
ˈinna llaḏīna ʿinda rabbika lā yastakbirūna ʿan ʿibādatihī wa-yusabbiḥūnahū wa-lahū yasǧudūna
Indeed those who are [stationed] near your Lord do not disdain to worship Him. They glorify Him and prostrate to Him.
