Surah Abasa

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 80:1

   عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ﴿١﴾

   ʿabasa wa-tawallā

   He frowned and turned away

2. 80:2

   أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ﴿٢﴾

   ˈan ǧāˈahu l-ˈaʿmā

   when the blind man approached him.

3. 80:3

   وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ﴿٣﴾

   wa-mā yudrīka laʿallahū yazzakkā

   And how do you know, maybe he would purify himself,

4. 80:4

   أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ﴿٤﴾

   ˈaw yaḏḏakkaru fa-tanfaʿahu ḏ-ḏikrā

   or take admonition, and the admonition would benefit him!

5. 80:5

   أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ﴿٥﴾

   ˈammā mani staġnā

   But as for someone who is wealthy,

6. 80:6

   فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ﴿٦﴾

   fa-ˈanta lahū taṣaddā

   you attend to him,

7. 80:7

   وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ﴿٧﴾

   wa-mā ʿalayka ˈallā yazzakkā

   though you are not liable if he does not purify himself.

8. 80:8

   وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ﴿٨﴾

   wa-ˈammā man ǧāˈaka yasʿā

   But as for someone who comes hurrying to you,

9. 80:9

   وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ﴿٩﴾

   wa-huwa yaḫšā

   while he fears [Allah],

10. 80:10

    فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ﴿١٠﴾

    fa-ˈanta ʿanhu talahhā

    you are neglectful of him.

11. 80:11

    كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ﴿١١﴾

    kallā ˈinnahā taḏkiratun

    No indeed! These [verses of the Quran ] are a reminder

12. 80:12

    فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ﴿١٢﴾

    fa-man šāˈa ḏakarahū

    —so let anyone who wishes remember—

13. 80:13

    فِى صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ﴿١٣﴾

    fī ṣuḥufin mukarramatin

    in honoured scriptures,

14. 80:14

    مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ﴿١٤﴾

    marfūʿatin muṭahharatin

    exalted and purified,

15. 80:15

    بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍ﴿١٥﴾

    bi-ˈaydī safaratin

    in the hands of envoys,

16. 80:16

    كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍ﴿١٦﴾

    kirāmin bararatin

    noble and pious.

17. 80:17

    قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ﴿١٧﴾

    qutila l-ˈinsānu mā ˈakfarahū

    Perish man! How ungrateful is he!

18. 80:18

    مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ﴿١٨﴾

    min ˈayyi šayˈin ḫalaqahū

    From what did He create him?

19. 80:19

    مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ﴿١٩﴾

    min nuṭfatin ḫalaqahū fa-qaddarahū

    He created him from a drop of [seminal] fluid; then proportioned him.

20. 80:20

    ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ﴿٢٠﴾

    ṯumma s-sabīla yassarahū

    Then He made the way easy for him;

21. 80:21

    ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ﴿٢١﴾

    ṯumma ˈamātahū fa-ˈaqbarahū

    then He made him die and buried him;

22. 80:22

    ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ﴿٢٢﴾

    ṯumma ˈiḏā šāˈa ˈanšarahū

    and then, when He wished, resurrected him.

23. 80:23

    كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ﴿٢٣﴾

    kallā lammā yaqḍi mā ˈamarahū

    No indeed! He has not yet carried out what He has commanded him.

24. 80:24

    فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ﴿٢٤﴾

    fa-l-yanẓuri l-ˈinsānu ˈilā ṭaʿāmihī

    Let man consider his food:

25. 80:25

    أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّا﴿٢٥﴾

    ˈannā ṣababnā l-māˈa ṣabban

    We pour down plenteous water [from the sky],

26. 80:26

    ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّا﴿٢٦﴾

    ṯumma šaqqaqnā l-ˈarḍa šaqqan

    then We split the earth making fissures in it

27. 80:27

    فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا﴿٢٧﴾

    fa-ˈanbatnā fīhā ḥabban

    and make the grain grow in it,

28. 80:28

    وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا﴿٢٨﴾

    wa-ʿinaban wa-qaḍban

    as well as vines and vegetables,

29. 80:29

    وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا﴿٢٩﴾

    wa-zaytūnan wa-naḫlan

    olives and date palms,

30. 80:30

    وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًا﴿٣٠﴾

    wa-ḥadāˈiqa ġulban

    and densely-planted gardens,

31. 80:31

    وَفَـٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا﴿٣١﴾

    wa-fākihatan wa-ˈabban

    fruits and pastures,

32. 80:32

    مَّتَـٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ﴿٣٢﴾

    matāʿan lakum wa-li-ˈanʿāmikum

    as a sustenance for you and your livestock.

33. 80:33

    فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ﴿٣٣﴾

    fa-ˈiḏā ǧāˈati ṣ-ṣāḫḫatu

    So when the deafening Cry comes—

34. 80:34

    يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ﴿٣٤﴾

    yawma yafirru l-marˈu min ˈaḫīhi

    the day when a man will evade his brother,

35. 80:35

    وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ﴿٣٥﴾

    wa-ˈummihī wa-ˈabīhi

    his mother and his father,

36. 80:36

    وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ﴿٣٦﴾

    wa-ṣāḥibatihī wa-banīhi

    his spouse and his sons—

37. 80:37

    لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ﴿٣٧﴾

    li-kulli mriˈin minhum yawmaˈiḏin šaˈnun yuġnīhi

    each of them will have a task to keep him preoccupied on that day.

38. 80:38

    وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ﴿٣٨﴾

    wuǧūhun yawmaˈiḏin musfiratun

    Some faces will be bright on that day,

39. 80:39

    ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ﴿٣٩﴾

    ḍāḥikatun mustabširatun

    laughing and joyous,

40. 80:40

    وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ﴿٤٠﴾

    wa-wuǧūhun yawmaˈiḏin ʿalayhā ġabaratun

    and some faces on that day will be covered with dust,

41. 80:41

    تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ﴿٤١﴾

    tarhaquhā qataratun

    overcast with gloom.

42. 80:42

    أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ﴿٤٢﴾

    ˈulāˈika humu l-kafaratu l-faǧaratu

    It is they who are the faithless, the vicious.
