Surah At-Tawba

بَرَآءَةٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ﴿١﴾

barāˈatun mina llāhi wa-rasūlihī ˈilā llaḏīna ʿāhadtum mina l-mušrikīna

[This is] a [declaration of] repudiation by Allah and His Apostle [addressed] to the polytheists with whom you had made a treaty:

فَسِيحُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّكُمْ غَيْرُ مُعْجِزِى ٱللَّهِ ۙ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُخْزِى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ﴿٢﴾

fa-sīḥū fī l-ˈarḍi ˈarbaʿata ˈašhurin wa-ʿlamū ˈannakum ġayru muʿǧizī llāhi wa-ˈanna llāha muḫzī l-kāfirīna

Travel [unmolested] in the land for four months, but know that you cannot frustrate Allah, and that Allah shall disgrace the faithless.

وَأَذَٰنٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَوْمَ ٱلْحَجِّ ٱلْأَكْبَرِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَرِىٓءٌ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ۙ وَرَسُولُهُۥ ۚ فَإِن تُبْتُمْ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ ۖ وَإِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّكُمْ غَيْرُ مُعْجِزِى ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ﴿٣﴾

wa-ˈaḏānun mina llāhi wa-rasūlihī ˈilā n-nāsi yawma l-ḥaǧǧi l-ˈakbari ˈanna llāha barīˈun mina l-mušrikīna wa-rasūluhū fa-ˈin tubtum fa-huwa ḫayrun lakum wa-ˈin tawallaytum fa-ʿlamū ˈannakum ġayru muʿǧizī llāhi wa-bašširi llaḏīna kafarū bi-ʿaḏābin ˈalīmin

[This is] an announcement from Allah and His Apostle to all the people on the day of the greater Hajj: that Allah and His Apostle repudiate the polytheists: If you repent that is better for you; but if you turn your backs [on Allah], know that you cannot frustrate Allah, and inform the faithless of a painful punishment

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنقُصُوكُمْ شَيْـًٔا وَلَمْ يُظَـٰهِرُوا۟ عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدًا فَأَتِمُّوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ عَهْدَهُمْ إِلَىٰ مُدَّتِهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ﴿٤﴾

ˈillā llaḏīna ʿāhadtum mina l-mušrikīna ṯumma lam yanquṣūkum šayˈan wa-lam yuẓāhirū ʿalaykum ˈaḥadan fa-ˈatimmū ˈilayhim ʿahdahum ˈilā muddatihim ˈinna llāha yuḥibbu l-muttaqīna

(barring the polytheists with whom you have made a treaty, and who did not violate any [of its terms] with you, nor backed anyone against you. So fulfill the treaty with them until [the end of] its term. Indeed Allah loves the Godwary).

فَإِذَا ٱنسَلَخَ ٱلْأَشْهُرُ ٱلْحُرُمُ فَٱقْتُلُوا۟ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ وَخُذُوهُمْ وَٱحْصُرُوهُمْ وَٱقْعُدُوا۟ لَهُمْ كُلَّ مَرْصَدٍ ۚ فَإِن تَابُوا۟ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَخَلُّوا۟ سَبِيلَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ﴿٥﴾

fa-ˈiḏā nsalaḫa l-ˈašhuru l-ḥurumu fa-qtulū l-mušrikīna ḥayṯu waǧadtumūhum wa-ḫuḏūhum wa-ḥṣurūhum wa-qʿudū lahum kulla marṣadin fa-ˈin tābū wa-ˈaqāmū ṣ-ṣalāta wa-ˈātawu z-zakāta fa-ḫallū sabīlahum ˈinna llāha ġafūrun raḥīmun

Then, when the sacred months have passed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them, capture them and besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every ambush. But if they repent, and maintain the prayer and give the zakat, then let them alone. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.

وَإِنْ أَحَدٌ مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ٱسْتَجَارَكَ فَأَجِرْهُ حَتَّىٰ يَسْمَعَ كَلَـٰمَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ أَبْلِغْهُ مَأْمَنَهُۥ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَعْلَمُونَ﴿٦﴾

wa-ˈin ˈaḥadun mina l-mušrikīna staǧāraka fa-ˈaǧirhu ḥattā yasmaʿa kalāma llāhi ṯumma ˈabliġhu maˈmanahū ḏālika bi-ˈannahum qawmun lā yaʿlamūna

If any of the polytheists seeks asylum from you, grant him asylum until he hears the Word of Allah. Then convey him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.

كَيْفَ يَكُونُ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ عَهْدٌ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعِندَ رَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّمْ عِندَ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ ۖ فَمَا ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟ لَكُمْ فَٱسْتَقِيمُوا۟ لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ﴿٧﴾

kayfa yakūnu li-l-mušrikīna ʿahdun ʿinda llāhi wa-ʿinda rasūlihī ˈillā llaḏīna ʿāhadtum ʿinda l-masǧidi l-ḥarāmi fa-mā staqāmū lakum fa-staqīmū lahum ˈinna llāha yuḥibbu l-muttaqīna

How shall the polytheists have any [valid] treaty with Allah and His Apostle?! (Barring those with whom you made a treaty at the Holy Mosque; so long as they are steadfast with you, be steadfast with them. Indeed Allah loves the Godwary.)

كَيْفَ وَإِن يَظْهَرُوا۟ عَلَيْكُمْ لَا يَرْقُبُوا۟ فِيكُمْ إِلًّا وَلَا ذِمَّةً ۚ يُرْضُونَكُم بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَتَأْبَىٰ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ فَـٰسِقُونَ﴿٨﴾

kayfa wa-ˈin yaẓharū ʿalaykum lā yarqubū fīkum ˈillan wa-lā ḏimmatan yurḍūnakum bi-ˈafwāhihim wa-taˈbā qulūbuhum wa-ˈakṯaruhum fāsiqūna

How? For if, they get the better of you, they will observe toward you neither kinship nor covenant. They please you with their mouths while their hearts spurn you; and most of them are transgressors.

ٱشْتَرَوْا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦٓ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ سَآءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ﴿٩﴾

ištaraw bi-ˈāyāti llāhi ṯamanan qalīlan fa-ṣaddū ʿan sabīlihī ˈinnahum sāˈa mā kānū yaʿmalūna

They have sold the signs of Allah for a paltry gain, and have barred [the people] from His way. Evil indeed is what they have been doing.

لَا يَرْقُبُونَ فِى مُؤْمِنٍ إِلًّا وَلَا ذِمَّةً ۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُعْتَدُونَ﴿١٠﴾

lā yarqubūna fī muˈminin ˈillan wa-lā ḏimmatan wa-ˈulāˈika humu l-muʿtadūna

They observe toward a believer neither kinship nor covenant, and it is they who are the transgressors.

فَإِن تَابُوا۟ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ ۗ وَنُفَصِّلُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ﴿١١﴾

fa-ˈin tābū wa-ˈaqāmū ṣ-ṣalāta wa-ˈātawu z-zakāta fa-ˈiḫwānukum fī d-dīni wa-nufaṣṣilu l-ˈāyāti li-qawmin yaʿlamūna

Yet if they repent and maintain the prayer and give the zakat, then they are your brethren in faith. We elaborate the signs for a people who have knowledge.

وَإِن نَّكَثُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ عَهْدِهِمْ وَطَعَنُوا۟ فِى دِينِكُمْ فَقَـٰتِلُوٓا۟ أَئِمَّةَ ٱلْكُفْرِ ۙ إِنَّهُمْ لَآ أَيْمَـٰنَ لَهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَنتَهُونَ﴿١٢﴾

wa-ˈin nakaṯū ˈaymānahum min baʿdi ʿahdihim wa-ṭaʿanū fī dīnikum fa-qātilū ˈaˈimmata l-kufri ˈinnahum lā ˈaymāna lahum laʿallahum yantahūna

But if they break their pledges after their having made a treaty and revile your religion, then fight the leaders of unfaith—indeed, they have no [commitment to] pledges,—maybe they will desist.

أَلَا تُقَـٰتِلُونَ قَوْمًا نَّكَثُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ وَهَمُّوا۟ بِإِخْرَاجِ ٱلرَّسُولِ وَهُم بَدَءُوكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ ۚ أَتَخْشَوْنَهُمْ ۚ فَٱللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَن تَخْشَوْهُ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ﴿١٣﴾

ˈa-lā tuqātilūna qawman nakaṯū ˈaymānahum wa-hammū bi-ˈiḫrāǧi r-rasūli wa-hum badaˈūkum ˈawwala marratin ˈa-taḫšawnahum fa-llāhu ˈaḥaqqu ˈan taḫšawhu ˈin kuntum muˈminīna

Will you not make war on a people who broke their pledges and resolved to expel the Apostle, and opened [hostilities] against you initially? Do you fear them? But Allah is worthier of being feared by you, should you be faithful.

قَـٰتِلُوهُمْ يُعَذِّبْهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ وَيُخْزِهِمْ وَيَنصُرْكُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَيَشْفِ صُدُورَ قَوْمٍ مُّؤْمِنِينَ﴿١٤﴾

qātilūhum yuʿaḏḏibhumu llāhu bi-ˈaydīkum wa-yuḫzihim wa-yanṣurkum ʿalayhim wa-yašfi ṣudūra qawmin muˈminīna

Make war on them so that Allah may punish them by your hands and humiliate them, and help you against them, and heal the hearts of a faithful folk,

وَيُذْهِبْ غَيْظَ قُلُوبِهِمْ ۗ وَيَتُوبُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ﴿١٥﴾

wa-yuḏhib ġayẓa qulūbihim wa-yatūbu llāhu ʿalā man yašāˈu wa-llāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīmun

and remove rage from their hearts, and Allah turns clemently to whomever He wishes, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise

أَمْ حَسِبْتُمْ أَن تُتْرَكُوا۟ وَلَمَّا يَعْلَمِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ مِنكُمْ وَلَمْ يَتَّخِذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا رَسُولِهِۦ وَلَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلِيجَةً ۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ﴿١٦﴾

ˈam ḥasibtum ˈan tutrakū wa-lammā yaʿlami llāhu llaḏīna ǧāhadū minkum wa-lam yattaḫiḏū min dūni llāhi wa-lā rasūlihī wa-lā l-muˈminīna walīǧatan wa-llāhu ḫabīrun bi-mā taʿmalūna

Do you suppose that you will be let off while Allah has not yet ascertained those of you who wage jihad and those who do not take anyone as [their] confidant besides Allah and His Apostle and the faithful? Allah is well aware of what you do.

مَا كَانَ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ أَن يَعْمُرُوا۟ مَسَـٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ شَـٰهِدِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِم بِٱلْكُفْرِ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ وَفِى ٱلنَّارِ هُمْ خَـٰلِدُونَ﴿١٧﴾

mā kāna li-l-mušrikīna ˈan yaʿmurū masāǧida llāhi šāhidīna ʿalā ˈanfusihim bi-l-kufri ˈulāˈika ḥabiṭat ˈaʿmāluhum wa-fī n-nāri hum ḫālidūna

The polytheists may not maintain Allah’s mosques while they are witness to their own unfaith. Their works have failed, and they shall remain in the Fire [forever].

إِنَّمَا يَعْمُرُ مَسَـٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ مَنْ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَأَقَامَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَى ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَلَمْ يَخْشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ ۖ فَعَسَىٰٓ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَن يَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ﴿١٨﴾

ˈinnamā yaʿmuru masāǧida llāhi man ˈāmana bi-llāhi wa-l-yawmi l-ˈāḫiri wa-ˈaqāma ṣ-ṣalāta wa-ˈātā z-zakāta wa-lam yaḫša ˈillā llāha fa-ʿasā ˈulāˈika ˈan yakūnū mina l-muhtadīna

Only those shall maintain Allah’s mosques who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and maintain the prayer, and give the zakat, and fear no one except Allah. They, hopefully, will be among the guided.

أَجَعَلْتُمْ سِقَايَةَ ٱلْحَآجِّ وَعِمَارَةَ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ كَمَنْ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَجَـٰهَدَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ لَا يَسْتَوُۥنَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ﴿١٩﴾

ˈa-ǧaʿaltum siqāyata l-ḥāǧǧi wa-ʿimārata l-masǧidi l-ḥarāmi ka-man ˈāmana bi-llāhi wa-l-yawmi l-ˈāḫiri wa-ǧāhada fī sabīli llāhi lā yastawūna ʿinda llāhi wa-llāhu lā yahdī l-qawma ẓ-ẓālimīna

Do you regard the providing of water to Hajj pilgrims and the maintenance of the Holy Mosque as similar [in worth] to someone who has faith in Allah and [believes in] the Last Day and wages jihad in the way of Allah? They are not equal with Allah, and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing lot.

ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَهَاجَرُوا۟ وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ أَعْظَمُ دَرَجَةً عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْفَآئِزُونَ﴿٢٠﴾

allaḏīna ˈāmanū wa-hāǧarū wa-ǧāhadū fī sabīli llāhi bi-ˈamwālihim wa-ˈanfusihim ˈaʿẓamu daraǧatan ʿinda llāhi wa-ˈulāˈika humu l-fāˈizūna

Those who have believed and migrated, and waged jihad in the way of Allah with their possessions and persons have a greater rank near Allah, and it is they who are the triumphant.

يُبَشِّرُهُمْ رَبُّهُم بِرَحْمَةٍ مِّنْهُ وَرِضْوَٰنٍ وَجَنَّـٰتٍ لَّهُمْ فِيهَا نَعِيمٌ مُّقِيمٌ﴿٢١﴾

yubašširuhum rabbuhum bi-raḥmatin minhu wa-riḍwānin wa-ǧannātin lahum fīhā naʿīmun muqīmun

Their Lord gives them the good news of His mercy and [His] pleasure, and for them there will be gardens with lasting bliss,

خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًا ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عِندَهُۥٓ أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ﴿٢٢﴾

ḫālidīna fīhā ˈabadan ˈinna llāha ʿindahū ˈaǧrun ʿaẓīmun

to remain in them forever. With Allah indeed is a great reward.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوٓا۟ ءَابَآءَكُمْ وَإِخْوَٰنَكُمْ أَوْلِيَآءَ إِنِ ٱسْتَحَبُّوا۟ ٱلْكُفْرَ عَلَى ٱلْإِيمَـٰنِ ۚ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ﴿٢٣﴾

yā-ˈayyuhā llaḏīna ˈāmanū lā tattaḫiḏū ˈābāˈakum wa-ˈiḫwānakum ˈawliyāˈa ˈini staḥabbū l-kufra ʿalā l-ˈīmāni wa-man yatawallahum minkum fa-ˈulāˈika humu ẓ-ẓālimūna

O you who have faith! Do not befriend your fathers and brothers if they prefer faithlessness to faith. Those of you who befriend them—it is they who are the wrongdoers.

قُلْ إِن كَانَ ءَابَآؤُكُمْ وَأَبْنَآؤُكُمْ وَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ وَأَزْوَٰجُكُمْ وَعَشِيرَتُكُمْ وَأَمْوَٰلٌ ٱقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا وَتِجَـٰرَةٌ تَخْشَوْنَ كَسَادَهَا وَمَسَـٰكِنُ تَرْضَوْنَهَآ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَجِهَادٍ فِى سَبِيلِهِۦ فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِىَ ٱللَّهُ بِأَمْرِهِۦ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ﴿٢٤﴾

qul ˈin kāna ˈābāˈukum wa-ˈabnāˈukum wa-ˈiḫwānukum wa-ˈazwāǧukum wa-ʿašīratukum wa-ˈamwālun-i qtaraftumūhā wa-tiǧāratun taḫšawna kasādahā wa-masākinu tarḍawnahā ˈaḥabba ˈilaykum mina llāhi wa-rasūlihī wa-ǧihādin fī sabīlihī fa-tarabbaṣū ḥattā yaˈtiya llāhu bi-ˈamrihī wa-llāhu lā yahdī l-qawma l-fāsiqīna

Say, ‘If your fathers and your sons, your brethren, your spouses, and your kinsfolk, the possessions that you have acquired, the business you fear may suffer, and the dwellings you are fond of, are dearer to you than Allah and His Apostle and to waging jihad in His way, then wait until Allah issues His edict, and Allah does not guide the transgressing lot.

لَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِى مَوَاطِنَ كَثِيرَةٍ ۙ وَيَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ ۙ إِذْ أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ كَثْرَتُكُمْ فَلَمْ تُغْنِ عَنكُمْ شَيْـًٔا وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ ثُمَّ وَلَّيْتُم مُّدْبِرِينَ﴿٢٥﴾

la-qad naṣarakumu llāhu fī mawāṭina kaṯīratin wa-yawma ḥunaynin ˈiḏ ˈaʿǧabatkum kaṯratukum fa-lam tuġni ʿankum šayˈan wa-ḍāqat ʿalaykumu l-ˈarḍu bi-mā raḥubat ṯumma wallaytum mudbirīna

Allah has certainly helped you in many situations, and on the day of Hunayn, when your great number impressed you, but it did not avail you in any way, and the earth became narrow for you in spite of its expanse, whereupon you turned your backs [to flee].

ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ وَعَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأَنزَلَ جُنُودًا لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا وَعَذَّبَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ جَزَآءُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ﴿٢٦﴾

ṯumma ˈanzala llāhu sakīnatahū ʿalā rasūlihī wa-ʿalā l-muˈminīna wa-ˈanzala ǧunūdan lam tarawhā wa-ʿaḏḏaba llaḏīna kafarū wa-ḏālika ǧazāˈu l-kāfirīna

Then Allah sent down His composure upon His Apostle and upon the faithful, and He sent down hosts you did not see, and He punished the faithless, and that is the requital of the faithless.

ثُمَّ يَتُوبُ ٱللَّهُ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ﴿٢٧﴾

ṯumma yatūbu llāhu min baʿdi ḏālika ʿalā man yašāˈu wa-llāhu ġafūrun raḥīmun

Then Allah shall turn clemently after that to whomever He wishes. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ نَجَسٌ فَلَا يَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلْمَسْجِدَ ٱلْحَرَامَ بَعْدَ عَامِهِمْ هَـٰذَا ۚ وَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ عَيْلَةً فَسَوْفَ يُغْنِيكُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦٓ إِن شَآءَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ﴿٢٨﴾

yā-ˈayyuhā llaḏīna ˈāmanū ˈinnamā l-mušrikūna naǧasun fa-lā yaqrabū l-masǧida l-ḥarāma baʿda ʿāmihim hāḏā wa-ˈin ḫiftum ʿaylatan fa-sawfa yuġnīkumu llāhu min faḍlihī ˈin šāˈa ˈinna llāha ʿalīmun ḥakīmun

O you who have faith! The polytheists are indeed unclean: so let them not approach the Holy Mosque after this year. Should you fear poverty, Allah will enrich you out of His grace, if He wishes. Indeed Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.

قَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَلَا بِٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَلَا يُحَرِّمُونَ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَلَا يَدِينُونَ دِينَ ٱلْحَقِّ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ حَتَّىٰ يُعْطُوا۟ ٱلْجِزْيَةَ عَن يَدٍ وَهُمْ صَـٰغِرُونَ﴿٢٩﴾

qātilū llaḏīna lā yuˈminūna bi-llāhi wa-lā bi-l-yawmi l-ˈāḫiri wa-lā yuḥarrimūna mā ḥarrama llāhu wa-rasūluhū wa-lā yadīnūna dīna l-ḥaqqi mina llaḏīna ˈūtū l-kitāba ḥattā yuʿṭū l-ǧizyata ʿan yadin wa-hum ṣāġirūna

Fight those who do not have faith in Allah nor [believe] in the Last Day, nor forbid what Allah and His Apostle have forbidden, nor practise the true religion, from among those who were given the Book, until they pay the tribute out of hand, degraded.

وَقَالَتِ ٱلْيَهُودُ عُزَيْرٌ ٱبْنُ ٱللَّهِ وَقَالَتِ ٱلنَّصَـٰرَى ٱلْمَسِيحُ ٱبْنُ ٱللَّهِ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ قَوْلُهُم بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ ۖ يُضَـٰهِـُٔونَ قَوْلَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ ۚ قَـٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۚ أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ﴿٣٠﴾

wa-qālati l-yahūdu ʿuzayrun-i bnu llāhi wa-qālati n-naṣārā l-masīḥu bnu llāhi ḏālika qawluhum bi-ˈafwāhihim yuḍāhiˈūna qawla llaḏīna kafarū min qablu qātalahumu llāhu ˈannā yuˈfakūna

The Jews say, ‘Ezra is the son of Allah,’ and the Christians say, ‘Christ is the son of Allah.’ That is an opinion that they mouth, imitating the opinions of the faithless of former times. May Allah assail them, where do they stray?!

ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ أَحْبَارَهُمْ وَرُهْبَـٰنَهُمْ أَرْبَابًا مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْمَسِيحَ ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ وَمَآ أُمِرُوٓا۟ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَـٰهًا وَٰحِدًا ۖ لَّآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ﴿٣١﴾

ittaḫaḏū ˈaḥbārahum wa-ruhbānahum ˈarbāban min dūni llāhi wa-l-masīḥa bna maryama wa-mā ˈumirū ˈillā li-yaʿbudū ˈilāhan wāḥidan lā ˈilāha ˈillā huwa subḥānahū ʿammā yušrikūna

They have taken their scribes and their monks as lords besides Allah, and also Christ, Mary’s son; though they were commanded to worship only the One God, there is no god except Him; He is far too immaculate to have any partners that they ascribe [to Him]!

يُرِيدُونَ أَن يُطْفِـُٔوا۟ نُورَ ٱللَّهِ بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَيَأْبَى ٱللَّهُ إِلَّآ أَن يُتِمَّ نُورَهُۥ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ﴿٣٢﴾

yurīdūna ˈan yuṭfiˈū nūra llāhi bi-ˈafwāhihim wa-yaˈbā llāhu ˈillā ˈan yutimma nūrahū wa-law kariha l-kāfirūna

They desire to put out the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah is intent on perfecting His light though the faithless should be averse.

هُوَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُۥ بِٱلْهُدَىٰ وَدِينِ ٱلْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُۥ عَلَى ٱلدِّينِ كُلِّهِۦ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ﴿٣٣﴾

huwa llaḏī ˈarsala rasūlahū bi-l-hudā wa-dīni l-ḥaqqi li-yuẓhirahū ʿalā d-dīni kullihī wa-law kariha l-mušrikūna

It is He who has sent His Apostle with the guidance and the religion of truth that He may make it prevail over all religions, though the polytheists should be averse.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْأَحْبَارِ وَٱلرُّهْبَانِ لَيَأْكُلُونَ أَمْوَٰلَ ٱلنَّاسِ بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ وَيَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱلَّذِينَ يَكْنِزُونَ ٱلذَّهَبَ وَٱلْفِضَّةَ وَلَا يُنفِقُونَهَا فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ﴿٣٤﴾

yā-ˈayyuhā llaḏīna ˈāmanū ˈinna kaṯīran mina l-ˈaḥbāri wa-r-ruhbāni la-yaˈkulūna ˈamwāla n-nāsi bi-l-bāṭili wa-yaṣuddūna ʿan sabīli llāhi wa-llaḏīna yaknizūna ḏ-ḏahaba wa-l-fiḍḍata wa-lā yunfiqūnahā fī sabīli llāhi fa-bašširhum bi-ʿaḏābin ˈalīmin

O you who have faith! Indeed many of the scribes and monks wrongfully eat up the people’s wealth, and bar [them] from the way of Allah. Those who treasure up gold and silver, and do not spend it in the way of Allah, inform them of a painful punishment

يَوْمَ يُحْمَىٰ عَلَيْهَا فِى نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ فَتُكْوَىٰ بِهَا جِبَاهُهُمْ وَجُنُوبُهُمْ وَظُهُورُهُمْ ۖ هَـٰذَا مَا كَنَزْتُمْ لِأَنفُسِكُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ مَا كُنتُمْ تَكْنِزُونَ﴿٣٥﴾

yawma yuḥmā ʿalayhā fī nāri ǧahannama fa-tukwā bihā ǧibāhuhum wa-ǧunūbuhum wa-ẓuhūruhum hāḏā mā kanaztum li-ˈanfusikum fa-ḏūqū mā kuntum taknizūna

on the day when these shall be heated in hellfire and therewith branded on their foreheads, their sides, and their backs [and told]: ‘This is what you treasured up for yourselves! So taste what you have treasured!’

إِنَّ عِدَّةَ ٱلشُّهُورِ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِى كِتَـٰبِ ٱللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ مِنْهَآ أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلْقَيِّمُ ۚ فَلَا تَظْلِمُوا۟ فِيهِنَّ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۚ وَقَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ كَآفَّةً كَمَا يُقَـٰتِلُونَكُمْ كَآفَّةً ۚ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ﴿٣٦﴾

ˈinna ʿiddata š-šuhūri ʿinda llāhi ṯnā ʿašara šahran fī kitābi llāhi yawma ḫalaqa s-samāwāti wa-l-ˈarḍa minhā ˈarbaʿatun ḥurumun ḏālika d-dīnu l-qayyimu fa-lā taẓlimū fīhinna ˈanfusakum wa-qātilū l-mušrikīna kāffatan ka-mā yuqātilūnakum kāffatan wa-ʿlamū ˈanna llāha maʿa l-muttaqīna

Indeed the number of months with Allah is twelve months in Allah’s Book, the day when He created the heavens and the earth. Of these, four are sacred. That is the upright religion. So do not wrong yourselves during them. Fight all the polytheists, just as they fight you all, and know that Allah is with the Godwary.

إِنَّمَا ٱلنَّسِىٓءُ زِيَادَةٌ فِى ٱلْكُفْرِ ۖ يُضَلُّ بِهِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُحِلُّونَهُۥ عَامًا وَيُحَرِّمُونَهُۥ عَامًا لِّيُوَاطِـُٔوا۟ عِدَّةَ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ فَيُحِلُّوا۟ مَا حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ زُيِّنَ لَهُمْ سُوٓءُ أَعْمَـٰلِهِمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ﴿٣٧﴾

ˈinnamā n-nasīˈu ziyādatun fī l-kufri yuḍallu bihi llaḏīna kafarū yuḥillūnahū ʿāman wa-yuḥarrimūnahū ʿāman li-yuwāṭiˈū ʿiddata mā ḥarrama llāhu fa-yuḥillū mā ḥarrama llāhu zuyyina lahum sūˈu ˈaʿmālihim wa-llāhu lā yahdī l-qawma l-kāfirīna

Indeed nasee is an increase in unfaith, whereby the faithless are led [further] astray. They allow it in one year and forbid it another year, so as to fit in with the number, which Allah has made inviolable, thus permitting what Allah has forbidden. Their evil deeds appear to them as decorous, and Allah does not guide the faithless lot.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَا لَكُمْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَكُمُ ٱنفِرُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ٱثَّاقَلْتُمْ إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ أَرَضِيتُم بِٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا مِنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ فَمَا مَتَـٰعُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ﴿٣٨﴾

yā-ˈayyuhā llaḏīna ˈāmanū mā lakum ˈiḏā qīla lakumu nfirū fī sabīli llāhi ṯṯāqaltum ˈilā l-ˈarḍi ˈa-raḍītum bi-l-ḥayāti d-dunyā mina l-ˈāḫirati fa-mā matāʿu l-ḥayāti d-dunyā fī l-ˈāḫirati ˈillā qalīlun

O you who have faith! What is the matter with you that when you are told: ‘Go forth in the way of Allah,’ you sink heavily to the ground? Are you pleased with the life of this world instead of the Hereafter? But the wares of the life of this world compared with the Hereafter are but insignificant.

إِلَّا تَنفِرُوا۟ يُعَذِّبْكُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا وَيَسْتَبْدِلْ قَوْمًا غَيْرَكُمْ وَلَا تَضُرُّوهُ شَيْـًٔا ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ﴿٣٩﴾

ˈillā tanfirū yuʿaḏḏibkum ʿaḏāban ˈalīman wa-yastabdil qawman ġayrakum wa-lā taḍurrūhu šayˈan wa-llāhu ʿalā kulli šayˈin qadīrun

If you do not go forth, He will punish you with a painful punishment, and replace you with another people, and you will not hurt Him in the least, and Allah has power over all things.

إِلَّا تَنصُرُوهُ فَقَدْ نَصَرَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِذْ أَخْرَجَهُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ثَانِىَ ٱثْنَيْنِ إِذْ هُمَا فِى ٱلْغَارِ إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَـٰحِبِهِۦ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَنَا ۖ فَأَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَيْهِ وَأَيَّدَهُۥ بِجُنُودٍ لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا وَجَعَلَ كَلِمَةَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱلسُّفْلَىٰ ۗ وَكَلِمَةُ ٱللَّهِ هِىَ ٱلْعُلْيَا ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ﴿٤٠﴾

ˈillā tanṣurūhu fa-qad naṣarahu llāhu ˈiḏ ˈaḫraǧahu llaḏīna kafarū ṯāniya ṯnayni ˈiḏ humā fī l-ġāri ˈiḏ yaqūlu li-ṣāḥibihī lā taḥzan ˈinna llāha maʿanā fa-ˈanzala llāhu sakīnatahū ʿalayhi wa-ˈayyadahū bi-ǧunūdin lam tarawhā wa-ǧaʿala kalimata llaḏīna kafarū s-suflā wa-kalimatu llāhi hiya l-ʿulyā wa-llāhu ʿazīzun ḥakīmun-i

If you do not help him, then Allah certainly helped him when the faithless expelled him, as one of two [refugees], when the two of them were in the cave, he said to his companion, ‘Do not grieve; Allah is indeed with us.’ Then Allah sent down His composure upon him, and strengthened him with hosts you did not see, and He made the word of the faithless the lowest; and the word of Allah is the highest; and Allah is all-mighty, all-wise.

ٱنفِرُوا۟ خِفَافًا وَثِقَالًا وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِكُمْ وَأَنفُسِكُمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ﴿٤١﴾

infirū ḫifāfan wa-ṯiqālan wa-ǧāhidū bi-ˈamwālikum wa-ˈanfusikum fī sabīli llāhi ḏālikum ḫayrun lakum ˈin kuntum taʿlamūna

Go forth, whether [armed] lightly or heavily, and wage jihad with your possessions and persons in the way of Allah. That is better for you, should you know.

لَوْ كَانَ عَرَضًا قَرِيبًا وَسَفَرًا قَاصِدًا لَّٱتَّبَعُوكَ وَلَـٰكِنۢ بَعُدَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلشُّقَّةُ ۚ وَسَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَوِ ٱسْتَطَعْنَا لَخَرَجْنَا مَعَكُمْ يُهْلِكُونَ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ﴿٤٢﴾

law kāna ʿaraḍan qarīban wa-safaran qāṣidan la-ttabaʿūka wa-lākin baʿudat ʿalayhimu š-šuqqatu wa-sa-yaḥlifūna bi-llāhi lawi staṭaʿnā la-ḫaraǧnā maʿakum yuhlikūna ˈanfusahum wa-llāhu yaʿlamu ˈinnahum la-kāḏibūna

Were it an accessible gain or a short journey, they would have surely followed you; but the distance seemed too far to them. Yet they will swear by Allah: ‘If we could, we would have surely gone forth with you.’ They [merely] destroy themselves. Allah knows that they are indeed liars.

عَفَا ٱللَّهُ عَنكَ لِمَ أَذِنتَ لَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكَ ٱلَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا۟ وَتَعْلَمَ ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ﴿٤٣﴾

ʿafā llāhu ʿanka li-ma ˈaḏinta lahum ḥattā yatabayyana laka llaḏīna ṣadaqū wa-taʿlama l-kāḏibīna

May Allah excuse you! Why did you grant them leave [to stay behind] before those who told the truth were evident to you and you had ascertained the liars?

لَا يَسْتَـْٔذِنُكَ ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ أَن يُجَـٰهِدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِٱلْمُتَّقِينَ﴿٤٤﴾

lā yastaˈḏinuka llaḏīna yuˈminūna bi-llāhi wa-l-yawmi l-ˈāḫiri ˈan yuǧāhidū bi-ˈamwālihim wa-ˈanfusihim wa-llāhu ʿalīmun bi-l-muttaqīna

Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day do not ask you for leave [exempting them] from waging jihad with their possessions and their persons, and Allah knows best the Godwary.

إِنَّمَا يَسْتَـْٔذِنُكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَٱرْتَابَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ فَهُمْ فِى رَيْبِهِمْ يَتَرَدَّدُونَ﴿٤٥﴾

ˈinnamā yastaˈḏinuka llaḏīna lā yuˈminūna bi-llāhi wa-l-yawmi l-ˈāḫiri wa-rtābat qulūbuhum fa-hum fī raybihim yataraddadūna

Only those seek a leave [of exemption] from you who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day, and whose hearts are in doubt, so they waver in their doubt.

وَلَوْ أَرَادُوا۟ ٱلْخُرُوجَ لَأَعَدُّوا۟ لَهُۥ عُدَّةً وَلَـٰكِن كَرِهَ ٱللَّهُ ٱنۢبِعَاثَهُمْ فَثَبَّطَهُمْ وَقِيلَ ٱقْعُدُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَ﴿٤٦﴾

wa-law ˈarādū l-ḫurūǧa la-ˈaʿaddū lahū ʿuddatan wa-lākin kariha llāhu nbiʿāṯahum fa-ṯabbaṭahum wa-qīla qʿudū maʿa l-qāʿidīna

Had they desired to go forth, they would have surely made some preparations for it; but Allah was averse to arouse them, so He held them back, and it was said [to them], ‘Be seated with those who sit back.’

لَوْ خَرَجُوا۟ فِيكُم مَّا زَادُوكُمْ إِلَّا خَبَالًا وَلَأَوْضَعُوا۟ خِلَـٰلَكُمْ يَبْغُونَكُمُ ٱلْفِتْنَةَ وَفِيكُمْ سَمَّـٰعُونَ لَهُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ﴿٤٧﴾

law ḫaraǧū fīkum mā zādūkum ˈillā ḫabālan wa-la-ˈawḍaʿū ḫilālakum yabġūnakumu l-fitnata wa-fīkum sammāʿūna lahum wa-llāhu ʿalīmun bi-ẓ-ẓālimīna

Had they gone forth with you, they would have only added to your troubles, and they would have surely spread rumours in your midst, seeking to cause sedition among you. They have some spies among you, and Allah knows best the wrongdoers.

لَقَدِ ٱبْتَغَوُا۟ ٱلْفِتْنَةَ مِن قَبْلُ وَقَلَّبُوا۟ لَكَ ٱلْأُمُورَ حَتَّىٰ جَآءَ ٱلْحَقُّ وَظَهَرَ أَمْرُ ٱللَّهِ وَهُمْ كَـٰرِهُونَ﴿٤٨﴾

la-qadi btaġawu l-fitnata min qablu wa-qallabū laka l-ˈumūra ḥattā ǧāˈa l-ḥaqqu wa-ẓahara ˈamru llāhi wa-hum kārihūna

They certainly sought to cause sedition earlier, and upset the matters for you, until the truth came and Allah’s command prevailed, much as they were averse.

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ ٱئْذَن لِّى وَلَا تَفْتِنِّىٓ ۚ أَلَا فِى ٱلْفِتْنَةِ سَقَطُوا۟ ۗ وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمُحِيطَةٌۢ بِٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ﴿٤٩﴾

wa-minhum man yaqūlu ˈḏan lī wa-lā taftinnī ˈa-lā fī l-fitnati saqaṭū wa-ˈinna ǧahannama la-muḥīṭatun bi-l-kāfirīna

Among them there are some who say, ‘Give me leave, and do not put me to temptation.’ Look! They have already fallen into temptation and indeed hell besieges the faithless.

إِن تُصِبْكَ حَسَنَةٌ تَسُؤْهُمْ ۖ وَإِن تُصِبْكَ مُصِيبَةٌ يَقُولُوا۟ قَدْ أَخَذْنَآ أَمْرَنَا مِن قَبْلُ وَيَتَوَلَّوا۟ وَّهُمْ فَرِحُونَ﴿٥٠﴾

ˈin tuṣibka ḥasanatun tasuˈhum wa-ˈin tuṣibka muṣībatun yaqūlū qad ˈaḫaḏnā ˈamranā min qablu wa-yatawallaw wa-hum fariḥūna

If some good should befall you, it upsets them; but if an adversity befalls you, they say, ‘We had already taken our precautions in advance,’ and they go away boasting.

قُل لَّن يُصِيبَنَآ إِلَّا مَا كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَنَا هُوَ مَوْلَىٰنَا ۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ﴿٥١﴾

qul lan yuṣībanā ˈillā mā kataba llāhu lanā huwa mawlānā wa-ʿalā llāhi fa-l-yatawakkali l-muˈminūna

Say, ‘Nothing will befall us except what Allah has ordained for us. He is our master, and in Allah let all the faithful put their trust.’

قُلْ هَلْ تَرَبَّصُونَ بِنَآ إِلَّآ إِحْدَى ٱلْحُسْنَيَيْنِ ۖ وَنَحْنُ نَتَرَبَّصُ بِكُمْ أَن يُصِيبَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِعَذَابٍ مِّنْ عِندِهِۦٓ أَوْ بِأَيْدِينَا ۖ فَتَرَبَّصُوٓا۟ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّتَرَبِّصُونَ﴿٥٢﴾

qul hal tarabbaṣūna binā ˈillā ˈiḥdā l-ḥusnayayni wa-naḥnu natarabbaṣu bikum ˈan yuṣībakumu llāhu bi-ʿaḏābin min ʿindihī ˈaw bi-ˈaydīnā fa-tarabbaṣū ˈinnā maʿakum mutarabbiṣūna

Say, ‘Do you not await one of the two excellent things to happen to us? But we await that Allah shall visit on you a punishment, from Him, or by our hands. So wait! We too are waiting along with you.’

قُلْ أَنفِقُوا۟ طَوْعًا أَوْ كَرْهًا لَّن يُتَقَبَّلَ مِنكُمْ ۖ إِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ قَوْمًا فَـٰسِقِينَ﴿٥٣﴾

qul ˈanfiqū ṭawʿan ˈaw karhan lan yutaqabbala minkum ˈinnakum kuntum qawman fāsiqīna

Say, ‘Spend willingly or unwillingly, it shall never be accepted from you; for you are indeed a transgressing lot.’

وَمَا مَنَعَهُمْ أَن تُقْبَلَ مِنْهُمْ نَفَقَـٰتُهُمْ إِلَّآ أَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَبِرَسُولِهِۦ وَلَا يَأْتُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كُسَالَىٰ وَلَا يُنفِقُونَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كَـٰرِهُونَ﴿٥٤﴾

wa-mā manaʿahum ˈan tuqbala minhum nafaqātuhum ˈillā ˈannahum kafarū bi-llāhi wa-bi-rasūlihī wa-lā yaˈtūna ṣ-ṣalāta ˈillā wa-hum kusālā wa-lā yunfiqūna ˈillā wa-hum kārihūna

Nothing stops their charities from being accepted except that they have no faith in Allah and His Apostle and do not perform the prayer but lazily, and do not spend but reluctantly.

فَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ وَلَآ أَوْلَـٰدُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ﴿٥٥﴾

fa-lā tuʿǧibka ˈamwāluhum wa-lā ˈawlāduhum ˈinnamā yurīdu llāhu li-yuʿaḏḏibahum bihā fī l-ḥayāti d-dunyā wa-tazhaqa ˈanfusuhum wa-hum kāfirūna

So let not their wealth and children impress you: Allah only desires to punish them with these in the life of this world, and that their souls may depart while they are faithless.

وَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ إِنَّهُمْ لَمِنكُمْ وَمَا هُم مِّنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ يَفْرَقُونَ﴿٥٦﴾

wa-yaḥlifūna bi-llāhi ˈinnahum la-minkum wa-mā hum minkum wa-lākinnahum qawmun yafraqūna

They swear by Allah that they belong to you, but they do not belong to you. Rather, they are a frightened lot.

لَوْ يَجِدُونَ مَلْجَـًٔا أَوْ مَغَـٰرَٰتٍ أَوْ مُدَّخَلًا لَّوَلَّوْا۟ إِلَيْهِ وَهُمْ يَجْمَحُونَ﴿٥٧﴾

law yaǧidūna malǧaˈan ˈaw maġārātin ˈaw muddaḫalan la-wallaw ˈilayhi wa-hum yaǧmaḥūna

If they could find a refuge, or a hideout, or a hole [to creep into], they would turn to it in frantic haste.

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَلْمِزُكَ فِى ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ فَإِنْ أُعْطُوا۟ مِنْهَا رَضُوا۟ وَإِن لَّمْ يُعْطَوْا۟ مِنْهَآ إِذَا هُمْ يَسْخَطُونَ﴿٥٨﴾

wa-minhum man yalmizuka fī ṣ-ṣadaqāti fa-ˈin ˈuʿṭū minhā raḍū wa-ˈin lam yuʿṭaw minhā ˈiḏā hum yasḫaṭūna

There are some of them who blame you regarding [the distribution of] the charities: if they are given from them, they are pleased, but if they are not given from them, behold, they are displeased.

وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ رَضُوا۟ مَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَقَالُوا۟ حَسْبُنَا ٱللَّهُ سَيُؤْتِينَا ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ وَرَسُولُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ رَٰغِبُونَ﴿٥٩﴾

wa-law ˈannahum raḍū mā ˈātāhumu llāhu wa-rasūluhū wa-qālū ḥasbunā llāhu sa-yuˈtīnā llāhu min faḍlihī wa-rasūluhū ˈinnā ˈilā llāhi rāġibūna

[It would have been better] if they had been pleased with what Allah and His Apostle gave them, and had said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us; Allah and His Apostle will give to us out of His grace. Indeed to Allah do we eagerly turn.’

إِنَّمَا ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتُ لِلْفُقَرَآءِ وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينِ وَٱلْعَـٰمِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا وَٱلْمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَفِى ٱلرِّقَابِ وَٱلْغَـٰرِمِينَ وَفِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ ۖ فَرِيضَةً مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ﴿٦٠﴾

ˈinnamā ṣ-ṣadaqātu li-l-fuqarāˈi wa-l-masākīni wa-l-ʿāmilīna ʿalayhā wa-l-muˈallafati qulūbuhum wa-fī r-riqābi wa-l-ġārimīna wa-fī sabīli llāhi wa-bni s-sabīli farīḍatan mina llāhi wa-llāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīmun

The charities are only for the poor and the needy, and those employed to collect them, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and for [the freedom of] the slaves and the debtors, and in the way of Allah, and for the traveller. [This is] an ordinance from Allah, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.

وَمِنْهُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ ٱلنَّبِىَّ وَيَقُولُونَ هُوَ أُذُنٌ ۚ قُلْ أُذُنُ خَيْرٍ لَّكُمْ يُؤْمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَيُؤْمِنُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنكُمْ ۚ وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ﴿٦١﴾

wa-minhumu llaḏīna yuˈḏūna n-nabiyya wa-yaqūlūna huwa ˈuḏunun qul ˈuḏunu ḫayrin lakum yuˈminu bi-llāhi wa-yuˈminu li-l-muˈminīna wa-raḥmatun li-llaḏīna ˈāmanū minkum wa-llaḏīna yuˈḏūna rasūla llāhi lahum ʿaḏābun ˈalīmun

Among them are those who torment the Prophet, and say, ‘He is an ear.’ Say, ‘An ear that is good for you. He has faith in Allah and trusts the faithful, and is a mercy for those of you who have faith.’ As for those who torment the Apostle of Allah, there is a painful punishment for them.

يَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَكُمْ لِيُرْضُوكُمْ وَٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥٓ أَحَقُّ أَن يُرْضُوهُ إِن كَانُوا۟ مُؤْمِنِينَ﴿٦٢﴾

yaḥlifūna bi-llāhi lakum li-yurḍūkum wa-llāhu wa-rasūluhū ˈaḥaqqu ˈan yurḍūhu ˈin kānū muˈminīna

They swear to you by Allah, to please you; but Allah and His Apostle are worthier that they should please Him, should they be faithful.

أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّهُۥ مَن يُحَادِدِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَأَنَّ لَهُۥ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدًا فِيهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْخِزْىُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ﴿٦٣﴾

ˈa-lam yaʿlamū ˈannahū man yuḥādidi llāha wa-rasūlahū fa-ˈanna lahū nāra ǧahannama ḫālidan fīhā ḏālika l-ḫizyu l-ʿaẓīmu

Do they not know that whoever opposes Allah and His Apostle, there awaits him the Fire of hell, to remain in it [forever]? That is the great disgrace.

يَحْذَرُ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ أَن تُنَزَّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُورَةٌ تُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ ۚ قُلِ ٱسْتَهْزِءُوٓا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُخْرِجٌ مَّا تَحْذَرُونَ﴿٦٤﴾

yaḥḏaru l-munāfiqūna ˈan tunazzala ʿalayhim sūratun tunabbiˈuhum bi-mā fī qulūbihim quli stahziˈū ˈinna llāha muḫriǧun mā taḥḏarūna

The hypocrites are apprehensive lest a surah should be sent down against them, informing them about what is in their hearts. Say, ‘Go on deriding. Allah will indeed bring out what you are apprehensive of.’

وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ ۚ قُلْ أَبِٱللَّهِ وَءَايَـٰتِهِۦ وَرَسُولِهِۦ كُنتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِءُونَ﴿٦٥﴾

wa-la-ˈin saˈaltahum la-yaqūlunna ˈinnamā kunnā naḫūḍu wa-nalʿabu qul ˈa-bi-llāhi wa-ˈāyātihī wa-rasūlihī kuntum tastahziˈūna

If you question them [regarding their conduct], they will surely say, ‘We were just gossiping and amusing ourselves.’ Say, ‘Were you deriding Allah, His signs, and His apostles?

لَا تَعْتَذِرُوا۟ قَدْ كَفَرْتُم بَعْدَ إِيمَـٰنِكُمْ ۚ إِن نَّعْفُ عَن طَآئِفَةٍ مِّنكُمْ نُعَذِّبْ طَآئِفَةًۢ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ﴿٦٦﴾

lā taʿtaḏirū qad kafartum baʿda ˈīmānikum ˈin naʿfu ʿan ṭāˈifatin minkum nuʿaḏḏib ṭāˈifatan bi-ˈannahum kānū muǧrimīna

Do not make excuses. You have disbelieved after your faith.’ If We forgive a group among you, We will punish another group, for they have been guilty.

ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتُ بَعْضُهُم مِّنۢ بَعْضٍ ۚ يَأْمُرُونَ بِٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَقْبِضُونَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ ۚ نَسُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ فَنَسِيَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ هُمُ ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ﴿٦٧﴾

al-munāfiqūna wa-l-munāfiqātu baʿḍuhum min baʿḍin yaˈmurūna bi-l-munkari wa-yanhawna ʿani l-maʿrūfi wa-yaqbiḍūna ˈaydiyahum nasū llāha fa-nasiyahum ˈinna l-munāfiqīna humu l-fāsiqūna

The hypocrites, men and women, are all alike: they bid what is wrong and forbid what is right; and are tight-fisted. They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them. The hypocrites are indeed the transgressors.

وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتِ وَٱلْكُفَّارَ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ هِىَ حَسْبُهُمْ ۚ وَلَعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّقِيمٌ﴿٦٨﴾

waʿada llāhu l-munāfiqīna wa-l-munāfiqāti wa-l-kuffāra nāra ǧahannama ḫālidīna fīhā hiya ḥasbuhum wa-laʿanahumu llāhu wa-lahum ʿaḏābun muqīmun

Allah has promised the hypocrites, men and women, and the faithless, the Fire of hell, to remain in it [forever]. That suffices them. Allah has cursed them, and there is a lasting punishment for them.

كَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ كَانُوٓا۟ أَشَدَّ مِنكُمْ قُوَّةً وَأَكْثَرَ أَمْوَٰلًا وَأَوْلَـٰدًا فَٱسْتَمْتَعُوا۟ بِخَلَـٰقِهِمْ فَٱسْتَمْتَعْتُم بِخَلَـٰقِكُمْ كَمَا ٱسْتَمْتَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُم بِخَلَـٰقِهِمْ وَخُضْتُمْ كَٱلَّذِى خَاضُوٓا۟ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ﴿٦٩﴾

ka-llaḏīna min qablikum kānū ˈašadda minkum quwwatan wa-ˈakṯara ˈamwālan wa-ˈawlādan fa-stamtaʿū bi-ḫalāqihim fa-stamtaʿtum bi-ḫalāqikum ka-mā stamtaʿa llaḏīna min qablikum bi-ḫalāqihim wa-ḫuḍtum ka-llaḏī ḫāḍū ˈulāˈika ḥabiṭat ˈaʿmāluhum fī d-dunyā wa-l-ˈāḫirati wa-ˈulāˈika humu l-ḫāsirūna

[Hypocrites! Your case is] similar to those who were before you, who were more powerful than you and more abounding in wealth and children: they enjoyed their share [of worldly existence]; you too enjoy your share, just like those who were before you enjoyed their share, and you have gossiped [impiously] as they gossiped. They are the ones whose works have failed in this world and the Hereafter; and it is they who are the losers.

أَلَمْ يَأْتِهِمْ نَبَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ قَوْمِ نُوحٍ وَعَادٍ وَثَمُودَ وَقَوْمِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَأَصْحَـٰبِ مَدْيَنَ وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَـٰتِ ۚ أَتَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ ۖ فَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ﴿٧٠﴾

ˈa-lam yaˈtihim nabaˈu llaḏīna min qablihim qawmi nūḥin wa-ʿādin wa-ṯamūda wa-qawmi ˈibrāhīma wa-ˈaṣḥābi madyana wa-l-muˈtafikāti ˈatathum rusuluhum bi-l-bayyināti fa-mā kāna llāhu li-yaẓlimahum wa-lākin kānū ˈanfusahum yaẓlimūna

Has there not come to them the account of those who were before them—the people of Noah, ‘Ad, and Tham£d, and the people of Abraham, the inhabitants of Midian, and the towns that were overturned? Their apostles brought them manifest proofs. So it was not Allah who wronged them, but it was they who used to wrong themselves.

وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٍ ۚ يَأْمُرُونَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤْتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَيُطِيعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ سَيَرْحَمُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ﴿٧١﴾

wa-l-muˈminūna wa-l-muˈminātu baʿḍuhum ˈawliyāˈu baʿḍin yaˈmurūna bi-l-maʿrūfi wa-yanhawna ʿani l-munkari wa-yuqīmūna ṣ-ṣalāta wa-yuˈtūna z-zakāta wa-yuṭīʿūna llāha wa-rasūlahū ˈulāˈika sa-yarḥamuhumu llāhu ˈinna llāha ʿazīzun ḥakīmun

But the faithful, men and women, are comrades of one another: they bid what is right and forbid what is wrong and maintain the prayer, give the zakat, and obey Allah and His Apostle. It is they to whom Allah will soon grant His mercy. Indeed Allah is all-mighty, all-wise.

وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ جَنَّـٰتٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا وَمَسَـٰكِنَ طَيِّبَةً فِى جَنَّـٰتِ عَدْنٍ ۚ وَرِضْوَٰنٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ﴿٧٢﴾

waʿada llāhu l-muˈminīna wa-l-muˈmināti ǧannātin taǧrī min taḥtihā l-ˈanhāru ḫālidīna fīhā wa-masākina ṭayyibatan fī ǧannāti ʿadnin wa-riḍwānun mina llāhi ˈakbaru ḏālika huwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīmu

Allah has promised the faithful, men and women, gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever], and good dwellings in the Gardens of Eden. Yet Allah’s pleasure is greater [than all these]; that is the great success.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ جَـٰهِدِ ٱلْكُفَّارَ وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ وَٱغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ ۖ وَبِئْسَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ﴿٧٣﴾

yā-ˈayyuhā n-nabiyyu ǧāhidi l-kuffāra wa-l-munāfiqīna wa-ġluẓ ʿalayhim wa-maˈwāhum ǧahannamu wa-biˈsa l-maṣīru

O Prophet! Wage jihad against the faithless and the hypocrites, and be severe with them. Their refuge shall be hell, and it is an evil destination.

يَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ مَا قَالُوا۟ وَلَقَدْ قَالُوا۟ كَلِمَةَ ٱلْكُفْرِ وَكَفَرُوا۟ بَعْدَ إِسْلَـٰمِهِمْ وَهَمُّوا۟ بِمَا لَمْ يَنَالُوا۟ ۚ وَمَا نَقَمُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ أَنْ أَغْنَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ ۚ فَإِن يَتُوبُوا۟ يَكُ خَيْرًا لَّهُمْ ۖ وَإِن يَتَوَلَّوْا۟ يُعَذِّبْهُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ وَمَا لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مِن وَلِىٍّ وَلَا نَصِيرٍ﴿٧٤﴾

yaḥlifūna bi-llāhi mā qālū wa-la-qad qālū kalimata l-kufri wa-kafarū baʿda ˈislāmihim wa-hammū bi-mā lam yanālū wa-mā naqamū ˈillā ˈan ˈaġnāhumu llāhu wa-rasūluhū min faḍlihī fa-ˈin yatūbū yaku ḫayran lahum wa-ˈin yatawallaw yuʿaḏḏibhumu llāhu ʿaḏāban ˈalīman fī d-dunyā wa-l-ˈāḫirati wa-mā lahum fī l-ˈarḍi min waliyyin wa-lā naṣīrin

They swear by Allah that they did not say it. But they certainly did utter the word of unfaith and renounced faith after their Islam. They contemplated what they could not achieve, and they were vindictive only because Allah and His Apostle had enriched them out of His grace. Yet if they repent, it will be better for them; but if they turn away, Allah shall punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and they shall not find on the earth any guardian or helper.

وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ عَـٰهَدَ ٱللَّهَ لَئِنْ ءَاتَىٰنَا مِن فَضْلِهِۦ لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ وَلَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ﴿٧٥﴾

wa-minhum man ʿāhada llāha la-ˈin ˈātānā min faḍlihī la-naṣṣaddaqanna wa-la-nakūnanna mina ṣ-ṣāliḥīna

Among them are those who made a pledge with Allah: ‘If He gives us out of His grace, we will surely give the zakat and we will surely be among the righteous.’

فَلَمَّآ ءَاتَىٰهُم مِّن فَضْلِهِۦ بَخِلُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَتَوَلَّوا۟ وَّهُم مُّعْرِضُونَ﴿٧٦﴾

fa-lammā ˈātāhum min faḍlihī baḫilū bihī wa-tawallaw wa-hum muʿriḍūna

But when He gave them out of His grace, they begrudged it and turned away, being disregardful.

فَأَعْقَبَهُمْ نِفَاقًا فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يَلْقَوْنَهُۥ بِمَآ أَخْلَفُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا وَعَدُوهُ وَبِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْذِبُونَ﴿٧٧﴾

fa-ˈaʿqabahum nifāqan fī qulūbihim ˈilā yawmi yalqawnahū bi-mā ˈaḫlafū llāha mā waʿadūhu wa-bi-mā kānū yakḏibūna

So He caused hypocrisy to ensue in their hearts until the day they will encounter Him, because of their going back on what they had promised Allah and because of the lies they used to tell.

أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ سِرَّهُمْ وَنَجْوَىٰهُمْ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَّـٰمُ ٱلْغُيُوبِ﴿٧٨﴾

ˈa-lam yaʿlamū ˈanna llāha yaʿlamu sirrahum wa-naǧwāhum wa-ˈanna llāha ʿallāmu l-ġuyūbi

Do they not know that Allah knows their secret [thoughts] and [hears] their secret talks, and that Allah is knower of all that is Unseen?

ٱلَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ ٱلْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِى ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ ۙ سَخِرَ ٱللَّهُ مِنْهُمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ﴿٧٩﴾

allaḏīna yalmizūna l-muṭṭawwiʿīna mina l-muˈminīna fī ṣ-ṣadaqāti wa-llaḏīna lā yaǧidūna ˈillā ǧuhdahum fa-yasḫarūna minhum saḫira llāhu minhum wa-lahum ʿaḏābun ˈalīmun-i

Those who blame the voluntary donors from among the faithful concerning the charities—and as for those who do not find [anything] except [what] their means [permit], they ridicule them—Allah shall put them to ridicule, and there is a painful punishment for them.

ٱسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ أَوْ لَا تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ إِن تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً فَلَن يَغْفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ﴿٨٠﴾

istaġfir lahum ˈaw lā tastaġfir lahum ˈin tastaġfir lahum sabʿīna marratan fa-lan yaġfira llāhu lahum ḏālika bi-ˈannahum kafarū bi-llāhi wa-rasūlihī wa-llāhu lā yahdī l-qawma l-fāsiqīna

Whether you plead forgiveness for them or do not plead forgiveness for them, even if you plead forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah shall never forgive them because they defied Allah and His Apostle; and Allah does not guide the transgressing lot.

فَرِحَ ٱلْمُخَلَّفُونَ بِمَقْعَدِهِمْ خِلَـٰفَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ وَكَرِهُوٓا۟ أَن يُجَـٰهِدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَقَالُوا۟ لَا تَنفِرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْحَرِّ ۗ قُلْ نَارُ جَهَنَّمَ أَشَدُّ حَرًّا ۚ لَّوْ كَانُوا۟ يَفْقَهُونَ﴿٨١﴾

fariḥa l-muḫallafūna bi-maqʿadihim ḫilāfa rasūli llāhi wa-karihū ˈan yuǧāhidū bi-ˈamwālihim wa-ˈanfusihim fī sabīli llāhi wa-qālū lā tanfirū fī l-ḥarri qul nāru ǧahannama ˈašaddu ḥarran law kānū yafqahūna

Those who were left behind boasted for sitting back against [the command of] the Apostle of Allah, and were reluctant to wage jihad with their possessions and persons in the way of Allah, and they said, ‘Do not go forth in this heat.’ Say, The fire of hell is severer in heat, should they understand.

فَلْيَضْحَكُوا۟ قَلِيلًا وَلْيَبْكُوا۟ كَثِيرًا جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ﴿٨٢﴾

fa-l-yaḍḥakū qalīlan wa-l-yabkū kaṯīran ǧazāˈan bi-mā kānū yaksibūna

So let them laugh a little; much will they weep as a requital for what they used to earn.

فَإِن رَّجَعَكَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَىٰ طَآئِفَةٍ مِّنْهُمْ فَٱسْتَـْٔذَنُوكَ لِلْخُرُوجِ فَقُل لَّن تَخْرُجُوا۟ مَعِىَ أَبَدًا وَلَن تُقَـٰتِلُوا۟ مَعِىَ عَدُوًّا ۖ إِنَّكُمْ رَضِيتُم بِٱلْقُعُودِ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ فَٱقْعُدُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْخَـٰلِفِينَ﴿٨٣﴾

fa-ˈin raǧaʿaka llāhu ˈilā ṭāˈifatin minhum fa-staˈḏanūka li-l-ḫurūǧi fa-qul lan taḫruǧū maʿiya ˈabadan wa-lan tuqātilū maʿiya ʿaduwwan ˈinnakum raḍītum bi-l-quʿūdi ˈawwala marratin fa-qʿudū maʿa l-ḫālifīna

If Allah brings you back [from the battlefront] to a group of them and they seek your permission to go forth, say, ‘You shall never go forth with me, and you shall not fight with me against any enemy. You were indeed pleased to sit back the first time, so sit back with those who stay behind.’

وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَىٰٓ أَحَدٍ مِّنْهُم مَّاتَ أَبَدًا وَلَا تَقُمْ عَلَىٰ قَبْرِهِۦٓ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمْ فَـٰسِقُونَ﴿٨٤﴾

wa-lā tuṣalli ʿalā ˈaḥadin minhum māta ˈabadan wa-lā taqum ʿalā qabrihī ˈinnahum kafarū bi-llāhi wa-rasūlihī wa-mātū wa-hum fāsiqūna

And never pray over any of them when he dies, nor stand at his graveside. They indeed defied Allah and His Apostle and died as transgressors.

وَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ وَأَوْلَـٰدُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن يُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ﴿٨٥﴾

wa-lā tuʿǧibka ˈamwāluhum wa-ˈawlāduhum ˈinnamā yurīdu llāhu ˈan yuʿaḏḏibahum bihā fī d-dunyā wa-tazhaqa ˈanfusuhum wa-hum kāfirūna

Let not their possessions or their children impress you. Allah only desires to punish them with these in this world, and that their souls may depart while they are faithless.

وَإِذَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ أَنْ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟ مَعَ رَسُولِهِ ٱسْتَـْٔذَنَكَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلطَّوْلِ مِنْهُمْ وَقَالُوا۟ ذَرْنَا نَكُن مَّعَ ٱلْقَـٰعِدِينَ﴿٨٦﴾

wa-ˈiḏā ˈunzilat sūratun ˈan ˈāminū bi-llāhi wa-ǧāhidū maʿa rasūlihi staˈḏanaka ˈulū ṭ-ṭawli minhum wa-qālū ḏarnā nakun maʿa l-qāʿidīna

When a surah is sent down [declaring]: ‘Have faith in Allah, and wage jihad along with His Apostle, the affluent among them ask you for leave, and say, ‘Let us remain with those who sit back.’

رَضُوا۟ بِأَن يَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْخَوَالِفِ وَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ﴿٨٧﴾

raḍū bi-ˈan yakūnū maʿa l-ḫawālifi wa-ṭubiʿa ʿalā qulūbihim fa-hum lā yafqahūna

They are pleased to be with those who stay back, and their hearts have been sealed. So they do not understand.

لَـٰكِنِ ٱلرَّسُولُ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ ۚ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُمُ ٱلْخَيْرَٰتُ ۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ﴿٨٨﴾

lākini r-rasūlu wa-llaḏīna ˈāmanū maʿahū ǧāhadū bi-ˈamwālihim wa-ˈanfusihim wa-ˈulāˈika lahumu l-ḫayrātu wa-ˈulāˈika humu l-mufliḥūna

But the Apostle and the faithful who are with him wage jihad with their possessions and persons, and to such belong all the blessings, and it is they who are the felicitous.

أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ﴿٨٩﴾

ˈaʿadda llāhu lahum ǧannātin taǧrī min taḥtihā l-ˈanhāru ḫālidīna fīhā ḏālika l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīmu

Allah has prepared for them gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever]. That is the great success.

وَجَآءَ ٱلْمُعَذِّرُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ لِيُؤْذَنَ لَهُمْ وَقَعَدَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَبُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ ۚ سَيُصِيبُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ﴿٩٠﴾

wa-ǧāˈa l-muʿaḏḏirūna mina l-ˈaʿrābi li-yuˈḏana lahum wa-qaʿada llaḏīna kaḏabū llāha wa-rasūlahū sa-yuṣību llaḏīna kafarū minhum ʿaḏābun ˈalīmun

Some of the Bedouins who sought to be excused came, so that they may be granted leave [to stay back]; while those who lied to Allah and His Apostle sat back. Soon there shall visit the faithless among them a painful punishment.

لَّيْسَ عَلَى ٱلضُّعَفَآءِ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلْمَرْضَىٰ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ مَا يُنفِقُونَ حَرَجٌ إِذَا نَصَحُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۚ مَا عَلَى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ مِن سَبِيلٍ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ﴿٩١﴾

laysa ʿalā ḍ-ḍuʿafāˈi wa-lā ʿalā l-marḍā wa-lā ʿalā llaḏīna lā yaǧidūna mā yunfiqūna ḥaraǧun ˈiḏā naṣaḥū li-llāhi wa-rasūlihī mā ʿalā l-muḥsinīna min sabīlin wa-llāhu ġafūrun raḥīmun

There is no blame on the weak, nor on the sick, nor on those who do not find anything to spend, so long as they are sincere to Allah and His Apostle. There is no [cause for] blaming the virtuous, and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.

وَلَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا مَآ أَتَوْكَ لِتَحْمِلَهُمْ قُلْتَ لَآ أَجِدُ مَآ أَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ تَوَلَّوا۟ وَّأَعْيُنُهُمْ تَفِيضُ مِنَ ٱلدَّمْعِ حَزَنًا أَلَّا يَجِدُوا۟ مَا يُنفِقُونَ﴿٩٢﴾

wa-lā ʿalā llaḏīna ˈiḏā mā ˈatawka li-taḥmilahum qulta lā ˈaǧidu mā ˈaḥmilukum ʿalayhi tawallaw wa-ˈaʿyunuhum tafīḍu mina d-damʿi ḥazanan ˈallā yaǧidū mā yunfiqūna

Nor [is there any blame] on those to whom, when they came to you to provide them with a mount, you said, ‘I do not find any mount for you,’ and they turned back, their eyes flowing with tears, grieved because they did not find any means to spend.

إِنَّمَا ٱلسَّبِيلُ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَـْٔذِنُونَكَ وَهُمْ أَغْنِيَآءُ ۚ رَضُوا۟ بِأَن يَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلْخَوَالِفِ وَطَبَعَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ﴿٩٣﴾

ˈinnamā s-sabīlu ʿalā llaḏīna yastaˈḏinūnaka wa-hum ˈaġniyāˈu raḍū bi-ˈan yakūnū maʿa l-ḫawālifi wa-ṭabaʿa llāhu ʿalā qulūbihim fa-hum lā yaʿlamūna

The blame lies only on those who ask leave of you [to stay behind] though they are well-off. They are pleased to be with those who stay back; Allah has set a seal on their hearts, so they do not know [the outcome of their conduct].

يَعْتَذِرُونَ إِلَيْكُمْ إِذَا رَجَعْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ ۚ قُل لَّا تَعْتَذِرُوا۟ لَن نُّؤْمِنَ لَكُمْ قَدْ نَبَّأَنَا ٱللَّهُ مِنْ أَخْبَارِكُمْ ۚ وَسَيَرَى ٱللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُۥ ثُمَّ تُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَـٰلِمِ ٱلْغَيْبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ﴿٩٤﴾

yaʿtaḏirūna ˈilaykum ˈiḏā raǧaʿtum ˈilayhim qul lā taʿtaḏirū lan nuˈmina lakum qad nabbaˈanā llāhu min ˈaḫbārikum wa-sa-yarā llāhu ʿamalakum wa-rasūluhū ṯumma turaddūna ˈilā ʿālimi l-ġaybi wa-š-šahādati fa-yunabbiˈukum bi-mā kuntum taʿmalūna

They will offer you excuses when you return to them. Say, ‘Do not make excuses; we will never believe you. Allah has informed us of your state of affairs. Allah and His Apostle will observe your conduct, then you will be returned to the Knower of the sensible and the Unseen, and He will inform you concerning what you used to do.’

سَيَحْلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَكُمْ إِذَا ٱنقَلَبْتُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ لِتُعْرِضُوا۟ عَنْهُمْ ۖ فَأَعْرِضُوا۟ عَنْهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ رِجْسٌ ۖ وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ﴿٩٥﴾

sa-yaḥlifūna bi-llāhi lakum ˈiḏā nqalabtum ˈilayhim li-tuʿriḍū ʿanhum fa-ˈaʿriḍū ʿanhum ˈinnahum riǧsun wa-maˈwāhum ǧahannamu ǧazāˈan bi-mā kānū yaksibūna

They will swear to you by Allah when you return to them, that you may leave them alone. So leave them alone. They are indeed filth, and their refuge shall be hell, a requital for what they used to earn.

يَحْلِفُونَ لَكُمْ لِتَرْضَوْا۟ عَنْهُمْ ۖ فَإِن تَرْضَوْا۟ عَنْهُمْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَرْضَىٰ عَنِ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ﴿٩٦﴾

yaḥlifūna lakum li-tarḍaw ʿanhum fa-ˈin tarḍaw ʿanhum fa-ˈinna llāha lā yarḍā ʿani l-qawmi l-fāsiqīna

They swear to you that you may be reconciled to them. But even if you are reconciled to them, Allah shall not be reconciled to the transgressing lot.

ٱلْأَعْرَابُ أَشَدُّ كُفْرًا وَنِفَاقًا وَأَجْدَرُ أَلَّا يَعْلَمُوا۟ حُدُودَ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ﴿٩٧﴾

al-ˈaʿrābu ˈašaddu kufran wa-nifāqan wa-ˈaǧdaru ˈallā yaʿlamū ḥudūda mā ˈanzala llāhu ʿalā rasūlihī wa-llāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīmun

The Bedouins are more obdurate in unfaith and hypocrisy, and more apt to be ignorant of the precepts that Allah has sent down to His Apostle, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.

وَمِنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ مَن يَتَّخِذُ مَا يُنفِقُ مَغْرَمًا وَيَتَرَبَّصُ بِكُمُ ٱلدَّوَآئِرَ ۚ عَلَيْهِمْ دَآئِرَةُ ٱلسَّوْءِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ﴿٩٨﴾

wa-mina l-ˈaʿrābi man yattaḫiḏu mā yunfiqu maġraman wa-yatarabbaṣu bikumu d-dawāˈira ʿalayhim dāˈiratu s-sawˈi wa-llāhu samīʿun ʿalīmun

Among the Bedouins are those who regard what they spend as a loss, and they watch for a reversal of your fortunes. Theirs shall be an adverse turn of fortune, and Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing.

وَمِنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ مَن يُؤْمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ وَيَتَّخِذُ مَا يُنفِقُ قُرُبَـٰتٍ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَصَلَوَٰتِ ٱلرَّسُولِ ۚ أَلَآ إِنَّهَا قُرْبَةٌ لَّهُمْ ۚ سَيُدْخِلُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِى رَحْمَتِهِۦٓ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ﴿٩٩﴾

wa-mina l-ˈaʿrābi man yuˈminu bi-llāhi wa-l-yawmi l-ˈāḫiri wa-yattaḫiḏu mā yunfiqu qurubātin ʿinda lāhi wa-ṣalawāti r-rasūli ˈa-lā ˈinnahā qurbatun lahum sa-yudḫiluhumu llāhu fī raḥmatihī ˈinna llāha ġafūrun raḥīmun

Yet among the Bedouins are [also] those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and regard what they spend as [a means of attaining] nearness to Allah and the blessings of the Apostle. Now, it shall indeed bring them nearness, and Allah will admit them into His mercy. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.

وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُهَـٰجِرِينَ وَٱلْأَنصَارِ وَٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّبَعُوهُم بِإِحْسَـٰنٍ رَّضِىَ ٱللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا۟ عَنْهُ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍ تَجْرِى تَحْتَهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ﴿١٠٠﴾

wa-s-sābiqūna l-ˈawwalūna mina l-muhāǧirīna wa-l-ˈanṣāri wa-llaḏīna ttabaʿūhum bi-ˈiḥsānin raḍiya llāhu ʿanhum wa-raḍū ʿanhu wa-ˈaʿadda lahum ǧannātin taǧrī taḥtahā l-ˈanhāru ḫālidīna fīhā ˈabadan ḏālika l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīmu

The early vanguard of the Emigrants and the Helpers and those who followed them in virtue—Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them forever. That is the great success.

وَمِمَّنْ حَوْلَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ مُنَـٰفِقُونَ ۖ وَمِنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ ۖ مَرَدُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنِّفَاقِ لَا تَعْلَمُهُمْ ۖ نَحْنُ نَعْلَمُهُمْ ۚ سَنُعَذِّبُهُم مَّرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَذَابٍ عَظِيمٍ﴿١٠١﴾

wa-mimman ḥawlakum mina l-ˈaʿrābi munāfiqūna wa-min ˈahli l-madīnati maradū ʿalā n-nifāqi lā taʿlamuhum naḥnu naʿlamuhum sa-nuʿaḏḏibuhum marratayni ṯumma yuraddūna ˈilā ʿaḏābin ʿaẓīmin

There are hypocrites among the Bedouins around you and among the townspeople of Madinah, steeped in hypocrisy. You do not know them; We know them, and We will punish them twice, then they shall be consigned to a great punishment.

وَءَاخَرُونَ ٱعْتَرَفُوا۟ بِذُنُوبِهِمْ خَلَطُوا۟ عَمَلًا صَـٰلِحًا وَءَاخَرَ سَيِّئًا عَسَى ٱللَّهُ أَن يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ﴿١٠٢﴾

wa-ˈāḫarūna ʿtarafū bi-ḏunūbihim ḫalaṭū ʿamalan ṣāliḥan wa-ˈāḫara sayyiˈan ʿasā llāhu ˈan yatūba ʿalayhim ˈinna llāha ġafūrun raḥīmun

[There are] others who have confessed to their sins, having mixed up righteous conduct with other that was evil. Maybe Allah will accept their repentance. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.

خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِم بِهَا وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ إِنَّ صَلَوٰتَكَ سَكَنٌ لَّهُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ﴿١٠٣﴾

ḫuḏ min ˈamwālihim ṣadaqatan tuṭahhiruhum wa-tuzakkīhim bihā wa-ṣalli ʿalayhim ˈinna ṣalātaka sakanun lahum wa-llāhu samīʿun ʿalīmun

Take charity from their possessions to cleanse them and purify them thereby, and bless them. Indeed your blessing is a comfort to them, and Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing.

أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ يَقْبَلُ ٱلتَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِۦ وَيَأْخُذُ ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ﴿١٠٤﴾

ˈa-lam yaʿlamū ˈanna llāha huwa yaqbalu t-tawbata ʿan ʿibādihī wa-yaˈḫuḏu ṣ-ṣadaqāti wa-ˈanna llāha huwa t-tawwābu r-raḥīmu

Do they not know that it is Allah who accepts the repentance of His servants and receives the charities, and that it is Allah who is the All-clement, the All-merciful?

وَقُلِ ٱعْمَلُوا۟ فَسَيَرَى ٱللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۖ وَسَتُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَـٰلِمِ ٱلْغَيْبِ وَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ﴿١٠٥﴾

wa-quli ʿmalū fa-sa-yarā llāhu ʿamalakum wa-rasūluhū wa-l-muˈminūna wa-sa-turaddūna ˈilā ʿālimi l-ġaybi wa-š-šahādati fa-yunabbiˈukum bi-mā kuntum taʿmalūna

And say, ‘Go on working: Allah will see your conduct, and His Apostle and the faithful [as well], and you will be returned to the Knower of the sensible and the Unseen, and He will inform you concerning what you used to do.

وَءَاخَرُونَ مُرْجَوْنَ لِأَمْرِ ٱللَّهِ إِمَّا يُعَذِّبُهُمْ وَإِمَّا يَتُوبُ عَلَيْهِمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ﴿١٠٦﴾

wa-ˈāḫarūna murǧawna li-ˈamri llāhi ˈimmā yuʿaḏḏibuhum wa-ˈimmā yatūbu ʿalayhim wa-llāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīmun

[There are] others waiting Allah’s edict: either He shall punish them, or turn to them clemently, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.

وَٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مَسْجِدًا ضِرَارًا وَكُفْرًا وَتَفْرِيقًۢا بَيْنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَإِرْصَادًا لِّمَنْ حَارَبَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ مِن قَبْلُ ۚ وَلَيَحْلِفُنَّ إِنْ أَرَدْنَآ إِلَّا ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۖ وَٱللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ﴿١٠٧﴾

wa-llaḏīna ttaḫaḏū masǧidan ḍirāran wa-kufran wa-tafrīqan bayna l-muˈminīna wa-ˈirṣādan li-man ḥāraba llāha wa-rasūlahū min qablu wa-la-yaḥlifunna ˈin ˈaradnā ˈillā l-ḥusnā wa-llāhu yašhadu ˈinnahum la-kāḏibūna

As for those who took to a mosque for sabotage and for defiance, and to cause division among the faithful, and for the purpose of ambush [used] by those who have fought Allah and His Apostle before—they will surely swear, ‘We desired nothing but good,’ and Allah bears witness that they are indeed liars.

لَا تَقُمْ فِيهِ أَبَدًا ۚ لَّمَسْجِدٌ أُسِّسَ عَلَى ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ مِنْ أَوَّلِ يَوْمٍ أَحَقُّ أَن تَقُومَ فِيهِ ۚ فِيهِ رِجَالٌ يُحِبُّونَ أَن يَتَطَهَّرُوا۟ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُطَّهِّرِينَ﴿١٠٨﴾

lā taqum fīhi ˈabadan la-masǧidun ˈussisa ʿalā t-taqwā min ˈawwali yawmin ˈaḥaqqu ˈan taqūma fīhi fīhi riǧālun yuḥibbūna ˈan yataṭahharū wa-llāhu yuḥibbu l-muṭṭahhirīna

Do not stand in it ever! A mosque founded on Godwariness from the [very] first day is worthier that you stand in it [for prayer]. Therein are men who love to keep pure, and Allah loves those who keep pure.

أَفَمَنْ أَسَّسَ بُنْيَـٰنَهُۥ عَلَىٰ تَقْوَىٰ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِضْوَٰنٍ خَيْرٌ أَم مَّنْ أَسَّسَ بُنْيَـٰنَهُۥ عَلَىٰ شَفَا جُرُفٍ هَارٍ فَٱنْهَارَ بِهِۦ فِى نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ﴿١٠٩﴾

ˈa-fa-man ˈassasa bunyānahū ʿalā taqwā mina llāhi wa-riḍwānin ḫayrun ˈam man ˈassasa bunyānahū ʿalā šafā ǧurufin hārin fa-nhāra bihī fī nāri ǧahanamma wa-llāhu lā yahdī l-qawma ẓ-ẓālimīna

Is he who founds his building on Godwariness and [the pursuit of Allah’s] pleasure better-off or he who founds his building on the brink of a collapsing bank which collapses with him into the fire of hell? Allah does not guide the wrongdoing lot.

لَا يَزَالُ بُنْيَـٰنُهُمُ ٱلَّذِى بَنَوْا۟ رِيبَةً فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ إِلَّآ أَن تَقَطَّعَ قُلُوبُهُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ﴿١١٠﴾

lā yazālu bunyānuhumu llaḏī banaw rībatan fī qulūbihim ˈillā ˈan taqaṭṭaʿa qulūbuhum wa-llāhu ʿalīmun ḥakīmun

The building they have built will never cease to be [a source of] disquiet in their hearts until their hearts are cut into pieces, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱشْتَرَىٰ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَأَمْوَٰلَهُم بِأَنَّ لَهُمُ ٱلْجَنَّةَ ۚ يُقَـٰتِلُونَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَيَقْتُلُونَ وَيُقْتَلُونَ ۖ وَعْدًا عَلَيْهِ حَقًّا فِى ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ وَٱلْإِنجِيلِ وَٱلْقُرْءَانِ ۚ وَمَنْ أَوْفَىٰ بِعَهْدِهِۦ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ فَٱسْتَبْشِرُوا۟ بِبَيْعِكُمُ ٱلَّذِى بَايَعْتُم بِهِۦ ۚ وَذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ﴿١١١﴾

ˈinna llāha štarā mina l-muˈminīna ˈanfusahum wa-ˈamwālahum bi-ˈanna lahumu l-ǧannata yuqātilūna fī sabīli llāhi fa-yaqtulūna wa-yuqtalūna waʿdan ʿalayhi ḥaqqan fī t-tawrāti wa-l-ˈinǧīli wa-l-qurˈāni wa-man ˈawfā bi-ʿahdihī mina llāhi fa-stabširū bi-bayʿikumu llaḏī bāyaʿtum bihī wa-ḏālika huwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīmu

Indeed Allah has bought from the faithful their souls and their possessions for paradise to be theirs: they fight in the way of Allah, kill, and are killed. A promise binding upon Him in the Torah and the Evangel and the Quran. And who is truer to his promise than Allah? So rejoice in the bargain you have made with Him, and that is the great success.

ٱلتَّـٰٓئِبُونَ ٱلْعَـٰبِدُونَ ٱلْحَـٰمِدُونَ ٱلسَّـٰٓئِحُونَ ٱلرَّٰكِعُونَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدُونَ ٱلْـَٔامِرُونَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَٱلنَّاهُونَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَٱلْحَـٰفِظُونَ لِحُدُودِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ﴿١١٢﴾

at-tāˈibūna l-ʿābidūna l-ḥāmidūna s-sāˈiḥūna r-rākiʿūna s-sāǧidūna l-ˈāmirūna bi-l-maʿrūfi wa-n-nāhūna ʿani l-munkari wa-l-ḥāfiẓūna li-ḥudūdi llāhi wa-bašširi l-muˈminīna

[The faithful are] penitent, devout, celebrators of Allah’s praise, wayfarers, who bow [and] prostrate [in prayer], bid what is right and forbid what is wrong, and keep Allah’s bounds—and give good news to the faithful.

مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِىِّ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَن يَسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَلَوْ كَانُوٓا۟ أُو۟لِى قُرْبَىٰ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْجَحِيمِ﴿١١٣﴾

mā kāna li-n-nabiyyi wa-llaḏīna ˈāmanū ˈan yastaġfirū li-l-mušrikīna wa-law kānū ˈulī qurbā min baʿdi mā tabayyana lahum ˈannahum ˈaṣḥābu l-ǧaḥīmi

The Prophet and the faithful may not plead for the forgiveness of the polytheists, even if they should be [their] relatives, after it has become clear to them that they will be the inmates of hell.

وَمَا كَانَ ٱسْتِغْفَارُ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ لِأَبِيهِ إِلَّا عَن مَّوْعِدَةٍ وَعَدَهَآ إِيَّاهُ فَلَمَّا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُۥٓ أَنَّهُۥ عَدُوٌّ لِّلَّهِ تَبَرَّأَ مِنْهُ ۚ إِنَّ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ لَأَوَّٰهٌ حَلِيمٌ﴿١١٤﴾

wa-mā kāna stiġfāru ˈibrāhīma li-ˈabīhi ˈillā ʿan mawʿidatin waʿadahā ˈiyyāhu fa-lammā tabayyana lahū ˈannahū ʿaduwwun li-llāhi tabarraˈa minhu ˈinna ˈibrāhīma la-ˈawwāhun ḥalīmun

Abraham’s pleading forgiveness for his father was only to fulfill a promise he had made him. So when it became manifest to him that he was an enemy of God, he repudiated him. Indeed Abraham was most plaintive and forbearing.

وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيُضِلَّ قَوْمًۢا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَىٰهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يُبَيِّنَ لَهُم مَّا يَتَّقُونَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ﴿١١٥﴾

wa-mā kāna llāhu li-yuḍilla qawman baʿda ˈiḏ hadāhum ḥattā yubayyina lahum mā yattaqūna ˈinna llāha bi-kulli šayˈin ʿalīmun

Allah does not lead any people astray after He has guided them until He has made clear to them what they should beware of. Indeed Allah has knowledge of all things.

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَهُۥ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ ۚ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَلِىٍّ وَلَا نَصِيرٍ﴿١١٦﴾

ˈinna llāha lahū mulku s-samāwāti wa-l-ˈarḍi yuḥyī wa-yumītu wa-mā lakum min dūni llāhi min waliyyin wa-lā naṣīrin

Indeed to Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He gives life and brings death. And besides Allah you do not have any guardian or helper.

لَّقَد تَّابَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِىِّ وَٱلْمُهَـٰجِرِينَ وَٱلْأَنصَارِ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّبَعُوهُ فِى سَاعَةِ ٱلْعُسْرَةِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا كَادَ يَزِيغُ قُلُوبُ فَرِيقٍ مِّنْهُمْ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ بِهِمْ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ﴿١١٧﴾

la-qad tāba llāhu ʿalā n-nabiyyi wa-l-muhāǧirīna wa-l-ˈanṣāri llaḏīna ttabaʿūhu fī sāʿati l-ʿusrati min baʿdi mā kāda yazīġu qulūbu farīqin minhum ṯumma tāba ʿalayhim ˈinnahū bihim raˈūfun raḥīmun

Certainly Allah turned clemently to the Prophet and the Emigrants and the Helpers, who followed him in the hour of difficulty, after the hearts of a part of them were about to swerve. Then He turned clemently to them—indeed, He is most kind and merciful to them

وَعَلَى ٱلثَّلَـٰثَةِ ٱلَّذِينَ خُلِّفُوا۟ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَن لَّا مَلْجَأَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّآ إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ لِيَتُوبُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ﴿١١٨﴾

wa-ʿalā ṯ-ṯalāṯati llaḏīna ḫullifū ḥattā ˈiḏā ḍāqat ʿalayhimu l-ˈarḍu bi-mā raḥubat wa-ḍāqat ʿalayhim ˈanfusuhum wa-ẓannū ˈan lā malǧaˈa mina llāhi ˈillā ˈilayhi ṯumma tāba ʿalayhim li-yatūbū ˈinna llāha huwa t-tawwābu r-raḥīmu

—and to the three who were left behind. When the earth became narrow for them with [all] its expanse, and their own souls weighed heavily on them, and they knew that there was no refuge from Allah except in Him, then He turned clemently toward them so that they might be penitent. Indeed Allah is the All-clement, the All-merciful.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ﴿١١٩﴾

yā-ˈayyuhā llaḏīna ˈāmanū ttaqū llāha wa-kūnū maʿa ṣ-ṣādiqīna

O you who have faith! Be wary of Allah, and be with the Truthful.

مَا كَانَ لِأَهْلِ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ أَن يَتَخَلَّفُوا۟ عَن رَّسُولِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا يَرْغَبُوا۟ بِأَنفُسِهِمْ عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ لَا يُصِيبُهُمْ ظَمَأٌ وَلَا نَصَبٌ وَلَا مَخْمَصَةٌ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا يَطَـُٔونَ مَوْطِئًا يَغِيظُ ٱلْكُفَّارَ وَلَا يَنَالُونَ مِنْ عَدُوٍّ نَّيْلًا إِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُم بِهِۦ عَمَلٌ صَـٰلِحٌ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ﴿١٢٠﴾

mā kāna li-ˈahli l-madīnati wa-man ḥawlahum mina l-ˈaʿrābi ˈan yataḫallafū ʿan rasūli llāhi wa-lā yarġabū bi-ˈanfusihim ʿan nafsihī ḏālika bi-ˈannahum lā yuṣībuhum ẓamaˈun wa-lā naṣabun wa-lā maḫmaṣatun fī sabīli llāhi wa-lā yaṭaˈūna mawṭiˈan yaġīẓu l-kuffāra wa-lā yanālūna min ʿaduwwin naylan ˈillā kutiba lahum bihī ʿamalun ṣāliḥun ˈinna llāha lā yuḍīʿu ˈaǧra l-muḥsinīna

It is not fitting for the people of Madinah and the Bedouins around them to hang back behind the Apostle of Allah and prefer their own lives to his life. That is because they neither experience any thirst, nor fatigue, nor hunger, in the way of Allah, nor do they tread any ground enraging the faithless, nor do they gain any ground against an enemy but a righteous deed is written for them on its account. Indeed Allah does not waste the reward of the virtuous.

وَلَا يُنفِقُونَ نَفَقَةً صَغِيرَةً وَلَا كَبِيرَةً وَلَا يَقْطَعُونَ وَادِيًا إِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُمْ لِيَجْزِيَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ أَحْسَنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ﴿١٢١﴾

wa-lā yunfiqūna nafaqatan ṣaġīratan wa-lā kabīratan wa-lā yaqṭaʿūna wādiyan ˈillā kutiba lahum li-yaǧziyahumu llāhu ˈaḥsana mā kānū yaʿmalūna

And neither do they incur any expense, big or small, nor do they cross any valley, but it is written to their account, so that Allah may reward them by the best of what they used to do.

وَمَا كَانَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ لِيَنفِرُوا۟ كَآفَّةً ۚ فَلَوْلَا نَفَرَ مِن كُلِّ فِرْقَةٍ مِّنْهُمْ طَآئِفَةٌ لِّيَتَفَقَّهُوا۟ فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَلِيُنذِرُوا۟ قَوْمَهُمْ إِذَا رَجَعُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَحْذَرُونَ﴿١٢٢﴾

wa-mā kāna l-muˈminūna li-yanfirū kāffatan fa-law-lā nafara min kulli firqatin minhum ṭāˈifatun li-yatafaqqahū fī d-dīni wa-li-yunḏirū qawmahum ˈiḏā raǧaʿū ˈilayhim laʿallahum yaḥḏarūna

Yet it is not for the faithful to go forth en masse. But why should not there a group from each of their sections go forth to become learned in religion, and to warn their people when they return to them, so that they may beware?

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ يَلُونَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْكُفَّارِ وَلْيَجِدُوا۟ فِيكُمْ غِلْظَةً ۚ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ﴿١٢٣﴾

yā-ˈayyuhā llaḏīna ˈāmanū qātilū llaḏīna yalūnakum mina l-kuffāri wa-l-yaǧidū fīkum ġilẓatan wa-ʿlamū ˈanna llāha maʿa l-muttaqīna

O you who have faith! Fight the faithless who are in your vicinity, and let them find severity in you, and know that Allah is with the Godwary.

وَإِذَا مَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ فَمِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ أَيُّكُمْ زَادَتْهُ هَـٰذِهِۦٓ إِيمَـٰنًا ۚ فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ فَزَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَـٰنًا وَهُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ﴿١٢٤﴾

wa-ˈiḏā mā ˈunzilat sūratun fa-minhum man yaqūlu ˈayyukum zādathu hāḏihī ˈīmānan fa-ˈammā llaḏīna ˈāmanū fa-zādathum ˈīmānan wa-hum yastabširūna

Whenever a surah is sent down, there are some of them who say, ‘Which of you did it increase in faith?’ As for those who have faith, it increases them in faith, and they rejoice.

وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَتْهُمْ رِجْسًا إِلَىٰ رِجْسِهِمْ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ﴿١٢٥﴾

wa-ˈammā llaḏīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun fa-zādathum riǧsan ˈilā riǧsihim wa-mātū wa-hum kāfirūna

But as for those in whose heart is a sickness, it only adds defilement to their defilement, and they die while they are faithless.

أَوَلَا يَرَوْنَ أَنَّهُمْ يُفْتَنُونَ فِى كُلِّ عَامٍ مَّرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ لَا يَتُوبُونَ وَلَا هُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ﴿١٢٦﴾

ˈa-wa-lā yarawna ˈannahum yuftanūna fī kulli ʿāmin marratan ˈaw marratayni ṯumma lā yatūbūna wa-lā hum yaḏḏakkarūna

Do they not see that they are tried once or twice every year? Yet they neither repent, nor do they take admonition.

وَإِذَا مَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ نَّظَرَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ هَلْ يَرَىٰكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ ثُمَّ ٱنصَرَفُوا۟ ۚ صَرَفَ ٱللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُم بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ﴿١٢٧﴾

wa-ˈiḏā mā ˈunzilat sūratun naẓara baʿḍuhum ˈilā baʿḍin hal yarākum min ˈaḥadin ṯumma nṣarafū ṣarafa llāhu qulūbahum bi-ˈannahum qawmun lā yafqahūna

Whenever a surah is sent down they look at one another: ‘Is anybody observing you?’ Then they slip away. Allah has turned aside their hearts, for they are a people who do not understand.

لَقَدْ جَآءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ حَرِيصٌ عَلَيْكُم بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ﴿١٢٨﴾

la-qad ǧāˈakum rasūlun min ˈanfusikum ʿazīzun ʿalayhi mā ʿanittum ḥarīṣun ʿalaykum bi-l-muˈminīna raˈūfun raḥīmun

There has certainly come to you an apostle from among yourselves. Grievous to him is your distress; he has deep concern for you, and is most kind and merciful to the faithful.

فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَقُلْ حَسْبِىَ ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ وَهُوَ رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ﴿١٢٩﴾

fa-ˈin tawallaw fa-qul ḥasbiya llāhu lā ˈilāha ˈillā huwa ʿalayhi tawakkaltu wa-huwa rabbu l-ʿarši l-ʿaẓīmi

But if they turn their backs [on you], say, ‘Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god except Him. In Him I have put my trust and He is the Lord of the Great Throne.’
