Surah 26
سُورَةُ الشُّعَرَاءِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
طسٓمٓ
ṭ-s-m (ṭā sīn mīm)
Ta, Seen, Meem.
تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ٱلْمُبِينِ
tilka ˈāyātu l-kitābi l-mubīni
These are the signs of the Manifest Book.
لَعَلَّكَ بَـٰخِعٌ نَّفْسَكَ أَلَّا يَكُونُوا۟ مُؤْمِنِينَ
laʿallaka bāḫiʿun nafsaka ˈallā yakūnū muˈminīna
You are liable to imperil your life [out of distress] that they will not have faith.
إِن نَّشَأْ نُنَزِّلْ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ ءَايَةً فَظَلَّتْ أَعْنَـٰقُهُمْ لَهَا خَـٰضِعِينَ
ˈin našaˈ nunazzil ʿalayhim mina s-samāˈi ˈāyatan fa-ẓallat ˈaʿnāquhum lahā ḫāḍiʿīna
If We wish We will send down to them a sign from the sky before which their heads will remain bowed in humility.
وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن ذِكْرٍ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ مُحْدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنْهُ مُعْرِضِينَ
wa-mā yaˈtīhim min ḏikrin mina r-raḥmāni muḥdaṯin ˈillā kānū ʿanhu muʿriḍīna
There does not come to them any new reminder from the All-beneficent but that they disregard it.
فَقَدْ كَذَّبُوا۟ فَسَيَأْتِيهِمْ أَنۢبَـٰٓؤُا۟ مَا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ
fa-qad kaḏḏabū fa-sa-yaˈtīhim ˈanbāˈu mā kānū bihī yastahziˈūna
They have already denied [the truth], but soon there will come to them the news of what they have been deriding.
أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ إِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَمْ أَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوْجٍ كَرِيمٍ
ˈa-wa-lam yaraw ˈilā l-ˈarḍi kam ˈanbatnā fīhā min kulli zawǧin karīmin
Have they not regarded the earth, how many of every splendid kind [of vegetation] We have caused to grow in it?
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
ˈinna fī ḏālika la-ˈāyatan wa-mā kāna ˈakṯaruhum muˈminīna
There is indeed a sign in that; but most of them do not have faith.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
wa-ˈinna rabbaka la-huwa l-ʿazīzu r-raḥīmu
Indeed your Lord is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.
وَإِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنِ ٱئْتِ ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
wa-ˈiḏ nādā rabbuka mūsā ˈani ˈti l-qawma ẓ-ẓālimīna
When your Lord called out to Moses: [saying,] ‘Go to those wrongdoing people,
قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ أَلَا يَتَّقُونَ
qawma firʿawna ˈa-lā yattaqūna
the people of Pharaoh. Will they not be wary [of Allah]?’
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ أَن يُكَذِّبُونِ
qāla rabbi ˈinnī ˈaḫāfu ˈan yukaḏḏibūni
He said, ‘My Lord! I fear they will impugn me,
وَيَضِيقُ صَدْرِى وَلَا يَنطَلِقُ لِسَانِى فَأَرْسِلْ إِلَىٰ هَـٰرُونَ
wa-yaḍīqu ṣadrī wa-lā yanṭaliqu lisānī fa-ˈarsil ˈilā hārūna
and I will become upset and my tongue will fail me. So send for Aaron [to join me].
وَلَهُمْ عَلَىَّ ذَنۢبٌ فَأَخَافُ أَن يَقْتُلُونِ
wa-lahum ʿalayya ḏanbun fa-ˈaḫāfu ˈan yaqtulūni
Besides, they have a charge against me, and I fear they will kill me.’
قَالَ كَلَّا ۖ فَٱذْهَبَا بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ ۖ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّسْتَمِعُونَ
qāla kallā fa-ḏhabā bi-ˈāyātinā ˈinnā maʿakum mustamiʿūna
He said, ‘Certainly not! Let both of you go with Our signs: We will indeed be with you, hearing [everything].
فَأْتِيَا فِرْعَوْنَ فَقُولَآ إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
fa-ˈtiyā firʿawna fa-qūlā ˈinnā rasūlu rabbi l-ʿālamīna
So approach Pharaoh and say, ‘‘We are indeed envoys of the Lord of the worlds
أَنْ أَرْسِلْ مَعَنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ
ˈan ˈarsil maʿanā banī ˈisrāˈīla
that you let the Children of Israel leave with us.’’ ’
قَالَ أَلَمْ نُرَبِّكَ فِينَا وَلِيدًا وَلَبِثْتَ فِينَا مِنْ عُمُرِكَ سِنِينَ
qāla ˈa-lam nurabbika fīnā walīdan wa-labiṯta fīnā min ʿumurika sinīna
He [i.e. Pharaoh] said, ‘Did we not rear you as a child among us, and did you not stay with us for years of your life?
وَفَعَلْتَ فَعْلَتَكَ ٱلَّتِى فَعَلْتَ وَأَنتَ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
wa-faʿalta faʿlataka llatī faʿalta wa-ˈanta mina l-kāfirīna
Then you committed that deed of yours, and you are an ingrate.’
قَالَ فَعَلْتُهَآ إِذًا وَأَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
qāla faʿaltuhā ˈiḏan wa-ˈana mina ḍ-ḍāllīna
He said, ‘I did that when I was astray.
فَفَرَرْتُ مِنكُمْ لَمَّا خِفْتُكُمْ فَوَهَبَ لِى رَبِّى حُكْمًا وَجَعَلَنِى مِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
fa-farartu minkum lammā ḫiftukum fa-wahaba lī rabbī ḥukman wa-ǧaʿalanī mina l-mursalīna
So I fled from you, as I was afraid of you. Then my Lord gave me sound judgement and made me one of the apostles.
وَتِلْكَ نِعْمَةٌ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَىَّ أَنْ عَبَّدتَّ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ
wa-tilka niʿmatun tamunnuhā ʿalayya ˈan ʿabbadta banī ˈisrāˈīla
That you have enslaved the Children of Israel—is that the favour with which you reproach me?’
قَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَا رَبُّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
qāla firʿawnu wa-mā rabbu l-ʿālamīna
He said, ‘And what is ‘‘the Lord of all the worlds?’’ ’
قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِينَ
qāla rabbu s-samāwāti wa-l-ˈarḍi wa-mā baynahumā ˈin kuntum mūqinīna
He said, ‘The Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them,—should you have conviction.’
قَالَ لِمَنْ حَوْلَهُۥٓ أَلَا تَسْتَمِعُونَ
qāla li-man ḥawlahū ˈa-lā tastamiʿūna
He said to those who were around him, ‘Don’t you hear?!’
قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
qāla rabbukum wa-rabbu ˈābāˈikumu l-ˈawwalīna
He said, ‘Your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers!’
قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ ٱلَّذِىٓ أُرْسِلَ إِلَيْكُمْ لَمَجْنُونٌ
qāla ˈinna rasūlakumu llaḏī ˈursila ˈilaykum la-maǧnūnun
He said, ‘Indeed your messenger, who has been sent to you, is surely crazy!’
قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلْمَشْرِقِ وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
qāla rabbu l-mašriqi wa-l-maġribi wa-mā baynahumā ˈin kuntum taʿqilūna
He said, ‘The Lord of the east and the west and whatever is between them—should you exercise your reason.’
قَالَ لَئِنِ ٱتَّخَذْتَ إِلَـٰهًا غَيْرِى لَأَجْعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمَسْجُونِينَ
qāla la-ˈini ttaḫaḏta ˈilāhan ġayrī la-ˈaǧʿalannaka mina l-masǧūnīna
He said, ‘If you take up any god other than me, I will surely make you a prisoner!’
قَالَ أَوَلَوْ جِئْتُكَ بِشَىْءٍ مُّبِينٍ
qāla ˈa-wa-law ǧiˈtuka bi-šayˈin mubīnin
He said, ‘What if I bring you something [as an] unmistakable [proof]?’
قَالَ فَأْتِ بِهِۦٓ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
qāla fa-ˈti bihī ˈin kunta mina ṣ-ṣādiqīna
He said, ‘Then bring it, should you be truthful.’
فَأَلْقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِىَ ثُعْبَانٌ مُّبِينٌ
fa-ˈalqā ʿaṣāhu fa-ˈiḏā hiya ṯuʿbānun mubīnun
Thereat he threw down his staff, and behold, it was a manifest python.
وَنَزَعَ يَدَهُۥ فَإِذَا هِىَ بَيْضَآءُ لِلنَّـٰظِرِينَ
wa-nazaʿa yadahū fa-ˈiḏā hiya bayḍāˈu li-n-nāẓirīna
Then he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white and bright to the onlookers.
قَالَ لِلْمَلَإِ حَوْلَهُۥٓ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ عَلِيمٌ
qāla li-l-malaˈi ḥawlahū ˈinna hāḏā la-sāḥirun ʿalīmun
He said to the elite [who stood] around him, ‘This is indeed an expert magician
يُرِيدُ أَن يُخْرِجَكُم مِّنْ أَرْضِكُم بِسِحْرِهِۦ فَمَاذَا تَأْمُرُونَ
yurīdu ˈan yuḫriǧakum min ˈarḍikum bi-siḥrihī fa-māḏā taˈmurūna
who seeks to expel you from your land with his magic. So what do you advise?’
قَالُوٓا۟ أَرْجِهْ وَأَخَاهُ وَٱبْعَثْ فِى ٱلْمَدَآئِنِ حَـٰشِرِينَ
qālū ˈarǧih wa-ˈaḫāhu wa-bʿaṯ fī l-madāˈini ḥāširīna
They said, ‘Put him and his brother off for a while, and send heralds to the cities
يَأْتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَحَّارٍ عَلِيمٍ
yaˈtūka bi-kulli saḥḥārin ʿalīmin
to bring you every expert magician.’
فَجُمِعَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ لِمِيقَـٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ
fa-ǧumiʿa s-saḥaratu li-mīqāti yawmin maʿlūmin
So the magicians were gathered for the tryst of a known day,
وَقِيلَ لِلنَّاسِ هَلْ أَنتُم مُّجْتَمِعُونَ
wa-qīla li-n-nāsi hal ˈantum muǧtamiʿūna
and the people were told: ‘Will you all gather?!’
لَعَلَّنَا نَتَّبِعُ ٱلسَّحَرَةَ إِن كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبِينَ
laʿallanā nattabiʿu s-saḥarata ˈin kānū humu l-ġālibīna
‘Maybe we will follow the magicians, if they are victors!’
فَلَمَّا جَآءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ قَالُوا۟ لِفِرْعَوْنَ أَئِنَّ لَنَا لَأَجْرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحْنُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبِينَ
fa-lammā ǧāˈa s-saḥaratu qālū li-firʿawna ˈa-ˈinna lanā la-ˈaǧran ˈin kunnā naḥnu l-ġālibīna
So when the magicians came, they said to Pharaoh, ‘Shall we have a reward if we were to be the victors?’
قَالَ نَعَمْ وَإِنَّكُمْ إِذًا لَّمِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ
qāla naʿam wa-ˈinnakum ˈiḏan la-mina l-muqarrabīna
He said, ‘Of course; and you will be among members of my inner circle.’
قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰٓ أَلْقُوا۟ مَآ أَنتُم مُّلْقُونَ
qāla lahum mūsā ˈalqū mā ˈantum mulqūna
Moses said to them, ‘Throw down whatever you have to throw!’
فَأَلْقَوْا۟ حِبَالَهُمْ وَعِصِيَّهُمْ وَقَالُوا۟ بِعِزَّةِ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّا لَنَحْنُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَ
fa-ˈalqaw ḥibālahum wa-ʿiṣiyyahum wa-qālū bi-ʿizzati firʿawna ˈinnā la-naḥnu l-ġālibūna
So they threw down their sticks and ropes, and said, ‘By the might of Pharaoh, we shall surely be victorious!’
فَأَلْقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِىَ تَلْقَفُ مَا يَأْفِكُونَ
fa-ˈalqā mūsā ʿaṣāhu fa-ˈiḏā hiya talqafu mā yaˈfikūna
Thereat Moses threw down his staff, and behold, it was swallowing what they had faked.
فَأُلْقِىَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَـٰجِدِينَ
fa-ˈulqiya s-saḥaratu sāǧidīna
Thereat the magicians fell down prostrating.
قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
qālū ˈāmannā bi-rabbi l-ʿālamīna
They said, ‘We believe in the Lord of all the worlds,
رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ
rabbi mūsā wa-hārūna
the Lord of Moses and Aaron.’
قَالَ ءَامَنتُمْ لَهُۥ قَبْلَ أَنْ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكَبِيرُكُمُ ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَكُمُ ٱلسِّحْرَ فَلَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ ۚ لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَيْدِيَكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُم مِّنْ خِلَـٰفٍ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
qāla ˈāmantum lahū qabla ˈan ˈāḏana lakum ˈinnahū la-kabīrukumu llaḏī ʿallamakumu s-siḥra fa-la sawfa taʿlamūna la-ˈuqaṭṭiʿanna ˈaydiyakum wa-ˈarǧulakum min ḫilāfin wa-la-ˈuṣallibannakum ˈaǧmaʿīna
He [i.e. Pharaoh] said, ‘Do you profess faith in Him before I should permit you? He is indeed your chief who has taught you magic! Soon you will know! I will cut off your hands and feet from opposite sides, and I will crucify you all.’
قَالُوا۟ لَا ضَيْرَ ۖ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ
qālū lā ḍayra ˈinnā ˈilā rabbinā munqalibūna
They said, ‘[There is] no harm [in that]! Indeed, we shall return to our Lord.
إِنَّا نَطْمَعُ أَن يَغْفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَـٰيَـٰنَآ أَن كُنَّآ أَوَّلَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
ˈinnā naṭmaʿu ˈan yaġfira lanā rabbunā ḫaṭāyānā ˈan kunnā ˈawwala l-muˈminīna
Indeed we hope our Lord will forgive us our offences for being the first to believe.’
وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنْ أَسْرِ بِعِبَادِىٓ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ
wa-ˈawḥaynā ˈilā mūsā ˈan ˈasri bi-ʿibādī ˈinnakum muttabaʿūna
Then We revealed to Moses, [saying],‘Set out with My servants at night, for you will be pursued.’
فَأَرْسَلَ فِرْعَوْنُ فِى ٱلْمَدَآئِنِ حَـٰشِرِينَ
fa-ˈarsala firʿawnu fī l-madāˈini ḥāširīna
Then Pharaoh sent heralds to the cities,
إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَشِرْذِمَةٌ قَلِيلُونَ
ˈinna hāˈulāˈi la-širḏimatun qalīlūna
[proclaiming:] ‘These are indeed a small band.
وَإِنَّهُمْ لَنَا لَغَآئِظُونَ
wa-ˈinnahum lanā la-ġāˈiẓūna
They have aroused our wrath,
وَإِنَّا لَجَمِيعٌ حَـٰذِرُونَ
wa-ˈinnā la-ǧamīʿun ḥāḏirūna
and we are alert and fully prepared.’
فَأَخْرَجْنَـٰهُم مِّن جَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
fa-ˈaḫraǧnāhum min ǧannātin wa-ʿuyūnin
So We took them out of gardens and springs,
وَكُنُوزٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ
wa-kunūzin wa-maqāmin karīmin
and [made them leave behind] treasures and stately homes.
كَذَٰلِكَ وَأَوْرَثْنَـٰهَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ
ka-ḏālika wa-ˈawraṯnāhā banī ˈisrāˈīla
So it was; and We bequeathed them to the Children of Israel.
فَأَتْبَعُوهُم مُّشْرِقِينَ
fa-ˈatbaʿūhum mušriqīna
Then they pursued them at sunrise.
فَلَمَّا تَرَٰٓءَا ٱلْجَمْعَانِ قَالَ أَصْحَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّا لَمُدْرَكُونَ
fa-lammā tarāˈa l-ǧamʿāni qāla ˈaṣḥābu mūsā ˈinnā la-mudrakūna
When the two hosts sighted each other, the companions of Moses said, ‘Indeed we have been caught up.’
قَالَ كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّ مَعِىَ رَبِّى سَيَهْدِينِ
qāla kallā ˈinna maʿiya rabbī sa-yahdīni
He said, ‘Certainly not! Indeed my Lord is with me. He will guide me.’
فَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنِ ٱضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلْبَحْرَ ۖ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرْقٍ كَٱلطَّوْدِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
fa-ˈawḥaynā ˈilā mūsā ˈani ḍrib bi-ʿaṣāka l-baḥra fa-nfalaqa fa-kāna kullu firqin ka-ṭ-ṭawdi l-ʿaẓīmi
Thereupon We revealed to Moses: ‘Strike the sea with your staff!’ Whereupon it parted, and each part was as if it were a great mountain.
وَأَزْلَفْنَا ثَمَّ ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ
wa-ˈazlafnā ṯamma l-ˈāḫarīna
There, We brought the others near,
وَأَنجَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥٓ أَجْمَعِينَ
wa-ˈanǧaynā mūsā wa-man maʿahū ˈaǧmaʿīna
and We delivered Moses and all those who were with him.
ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ
ṯumma ˈaġraqnā l-ˈāḫarīna
Then We drowned the rest.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
ˈinna fī ḏālika la-ˈāyatan wa-mā kāna ˈakṯaruhum muˈminīna
There is indeed a sign in that, but most of them do not have faith.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
wa-ˈinna rabbaka la-huwa l-ʿazīzu r-raḥīmu
Indeed your Lord is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.
وَٱتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ
wa-tlu ʿalayhim nabaˈa ˈibrāhīma
Relate to them the account of Abraham
إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِۦ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ
ˈiḏ qāla li-ˈabīhi wa-qawmihī mā taʿbudūna
when he said to his father and his people, ‘What is it that you are worshiping?!’
قَالُوا۟ نَعْبُدُ أَصْنَامًا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَـٰكِفِينَ
qālū naʿbudu ˈaṣnāman fa-naẓallu lahā ʿākifīna
They said, ‘We worship idols, and are constant in our devotion to them.’
قَالَ هَلْ يَسْمَعُونَكُمْ إِذْ تَدْعُونَ
qāla hal yasmaʿūnakum ˈiḏ tadʿūna
He said, ‘Do they hear you when you call them?
أَوْ يَنفَعُونَكُمْ أَوْ يَضُرُّونَ
ˈaw yanfaʿūnakum ˈaw yaḍurrūna
Or do they bring you any benefit, or cause you any harm?’
قَالُوا۟ بَلْ وَجَدْنَآ ءَابَآءَنَا كَذَٰلِكَ يَفْعَلُونَ
qālū bal waǧadnā ˈābāˈanā ka-ḏālika yafʿalūna
They said, ‘Indeed, we found our fathers doing likewise.’
قَالَ أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا كُنتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ
qāla ˈa-fa-raˈaytum mā kuntum taʿbudūna
He said, ‘Have you regarded what you have been worshipping,
أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُمُ ٱلْأَقْدَمُونَ
ˈantum wa-ˈābāˈukumu l-ˈaqdamūna
you and your ancestors?
فَإِنَّهُمْ عَدُوٌّ لِّىٓ إِلَّا رَبَّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
fa-ˈinnahum ʿaduwwun lī ˈillā rabba l-ʿālamīna
They are indeed enemies to me, but the Lord of all the worlds,
ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَنِى فَهُوَ يَهْدِينِ
allaḏī ḫalaqanī fa-huwa yahdīni
who created me, it is He who guides me,
وَٱلَّذِى هُوَ يُطْعِمُنِى وَيَسْقِينِ
wa-llaḏī huwa yuṭʿimunī wa-yasqīni
and provides me with food and drink,
وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ
wa-ˈiḏā mariḍtu fa-huwa yašfīni
and when I get sick, it is He who cures me;
وَٱلَّذِى يُمِيتُنِى ثُمَّ يُحْيِينِ
wa-llaḏī yumītunī ṯumma yuḥyīni
who will make me die, then He will bring me to life,
وَٱلَّذِىٓ أَطْمَعُ أَن يَغْفِرَ لِى خَطِيٓـَٔتِى يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ
wa-llaḏī ˈaṭmaʿu ˈan yaġfira lī ḫaṭīˈatī yawma d-dīni
and who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the Day of Retribution.’
رَبِّ هَبْ لِى حُكْمًا وَأَلْحِقْنِى بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
rabbi hab lī ḥukman wa-ˈalḥiqnī bi-ṣ-ṣāliḥīna
‘My Lord! Grant me [unerring] judgement, and unite me with the Righteous.
وَٱجْعَل لِّى لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
wa-ǧʿal lī lisāna ṣidqin fī l-ˈāḫirīna
Confer on me a worthy repute among the posterity,
وَٱجْعَلْنِى مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
wa-ǧʿalnī min waraṯati ǧannati n-naʿīmi
and make me one of the heirs to the paradise of bliss.
وَٱغْفِرْ لِأَبِىٓ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
wa-ġfir li-ˈabī ˈinnahū kāna mina ḍ-ḍāllīna
Forgive my father, for he is one of those who are astray.
وَلَا تُخْزِنِى يَوْمَ يُبْعَثُونَ
wa-lā tuḫzinī yawma yubʿaṯūna
Do not disgrace me on the day that they will be resurrected,
يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ مَالٌ وَلَا بَنُونَ
yawma lā yanfaʿu mālun wa-lā banūna
the day when neither wealth nor children will avail,
إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ
ˈillā man ˈatā llāha bi-qalbin salīmin
except him who comes to Allah with a sound heart,’
وَأُزْلِفَتِ ٱلْجَنَّةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
wa-ˈuzlifati l-ǧannatu li-l-muttaqīna
and paradise will be brought near for the Godwary,
وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلْجَحِيمُ لِلْغَاوِينَ
wa-burrizati l-ǧaḥīmu li-l-ġāwīna
and hell will be brought into view for the perverse,
وَقِيلَ لَهُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ
wa-qīla lahum ˈayna mā kuntum taʿbudūna
and they shall be told: ‘Where is that which you used to worship
مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ هَلْ يَنصُرُونَكُمْ أَوْ يَنتَصِرُونَ
min dūni llāhi hal yanṣurūnakum ˈaw yantaṣirūna
besides Allah? Do they help you, or do they help each other?’
فَكُبْكِبُوا۟ فِيهَا هُمْ وَٱلْغَاوُۥنَ
fa-kubkibū fīhā hum wa-l-ġāwūna
Then they will be cast into it on their faces—they and the perverse,
وَجُنُودُ إِبْلِيسَ أَجْمَعُونَ
wa-ǧunūdu ˈiblīsa ˈaǧmaʿūna
and the hosts of Iblis all together.
قَالُوا۟ وَهُمْ فِيهَا يَخْتَصِمُونَ
qālū wa-hum fīhā yaḫtaṣimūna
They will say, as they wrangle in it [together],
تَٱللَّهِ إِن كُنَّا لَفِى ضَلَـٰلٍ مُّبِينٍ
ta-llāhi ˈin kunnā la-fī ḍalālin mubīnin
‘By Allah, we had indeed been in manifest error
إِذْ نُسَوِّيكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
ˈiḏ nusawwīkum bi-rabbi l-ʿālamīna
when we equated you with the Lord of all the worlds!
وَمَآ أَضَلَّنَآ إِلَّا ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ
wa-mā ˈaḍallanā ˈillā l-muǧrimūna
No one led us astray except the guilty.
فَمَا لَنَا مِن شَـٰفِعِينَ
fa-mā lanā min šāfiʿīna
Now we have no intercessors,
وَلَا صَدِيقٍ حَمِيمٍ
wa-lā ṣadīqin ḥamīmin
nor do we have any sympathetic friend.
فَلَوْ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةً فَنَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
fa-law ˈanna lanā karratan fa-nakūna mina l-muˈminīna
Had there been another turn for us, we would be among the faithful.’
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
ˈinna fī ḏālika la-ˈāyatan wa-mā kāna ˈakṯaruhum muˈminīna
There is indeed a sign in that; but most of them do not have faith.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
wa-ˈinna rabbaka la-huwa l-ʿazīzu r-raḥīmu
Indeed your Lord is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.
كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
kaḏḏabat qawmu nūḥin-i l-mursalīna
The people of Noah impugned the apostles
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ نُوحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
ˈiḏ qāla lahum ˈaḫūhum nūḥun ˈa-lā tattaqūna
when Noah, their brother, said to them, ‘Will you not be wary [of Allah]?
إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
ˈinnī lakum rasūlun ˈamīnun
Indeed I am a trusted apostle [sent] to you.
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
fa-ttaqū llāha wa-ˈaṭīʿūni
So be wary of Allah and obey me.
وَمَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
wa-mā ˈasˈalukum ʿalayhi min ˈaǧrin ˈin ˈaǧriya ˈillā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīna
I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward lies only with the Lord of all the worlds.
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
fa-ttaqū llāha wa-ˈaṭīʿūni
So be wary of Allah and obey me.’
قَالُوٓا۟ أَنُؤْمِنُ لَكَ وَٱتَّبَعَكَ ٱلْأَرْذَلُونَ
qālū ˈa-nuˈminu laka wa-ttabaʿaka l-ˈarḏalūna
They said, ‘Shall we believe in you, when it is the riffraff who follow you?’
قَالَ وَمَا عِلْمِى بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
qāla wa-mā ʿilmī bi-mā kānū yaʿmalūna
He said, ‘What do I know as to what they used to do?
إِنْ حِسَابُهُمْ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّى ۖ لَوْ تَشْعُرُونَ
ˈin ḥisābuhum ˈillā ʿalā rabbī law tašʿurūna
Their reckoning is only with my Lord, should you be aware.
وَمَآ أَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
wa-mā ˈana bi-ṭāridi l-muˈminīna
I will not drive away the faithful.
إِنْ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ
ˈin ˈana ˈillā naḏīrun mubīnun
I am just a manifest warner.’
قَالُوا۟ لَئِن لَّمْ تَنتَهِ يَـٰنُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْمَرْجُومِينَ
qālū la-ˈin lam tantahi yā-nūḥu la-takūnanna mina l-marǧūmīna
They said, ‘Noah, if you do not desist, you will certainly be stoned [to death].’
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوْمِى كَذَّبُونِ
qāla rabbi ˈinna qawmī kaḏḏabūni
He said, ‘My Lord! Indeed my people have impugned me.
فَٱفْتَحْ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَهُمْ فَتْحًا وَنَجِّنِى وَمَن مَّعِىَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
fa-ftaḥ baynī wa-baynahum fatḥan wa-naǧǧinī wa-man maʿiya mina l-muˈminīna
So judge conclusively between me and them, and deliver me and the faithful who are with me.’
فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥ فِى ٱلْفُلْكِ ٱلْمَشْحُونِ
fa-ˈanǧaynāhu wa-man maʿahū fī l-fulki l-mašḥūni
Thereupon We delivered him and those who were with him in the laden ark.
ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا بَعْدُ ٱلْبَاقِينَ
ṯumma ˈaġraqnā baʿdu l-bāqīna
Then We drowned the rest.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
ˈinna fī ḏālika la-ˈāyatan wa-mā kāna ˈakṯaruhum muˈminīna
There is indeed a sign in that; but most of them do not have faith.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
wa-ˈinna rabbaka la-huwa l-ʿazīzu r-raḥīmu
Indeed your Lord is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.
كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
kaḏḏabat ʿādun-i l-mursalīna
[The people of] ‘Ad impugned the apostles,
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ هُودٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
ˈiḏ qāla lahum ˈaḫūhum hūdun ˈa-lā tattaqūna
when Hud, their brother, said to them, ‘Will you not be wary [of Allah]?
إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
ˈinnī lakum rasūlun ˈamīnun
Indeed I am a trusted apostle [sent] to you.
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
fa-ttaqū llāha wa-ˈaṭīʿūni
So be wary of Allah and obey me.
وَمَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
wa-mā ˈasˈalukum ʿalayhi min ˈaǧrin ˈin ˈaǧriya ˈillā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīna
I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward lies only with the Lord of all the worlds.
أَتَبْنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِيعٍ ءَايَةً تَعْبَثُونَ
ˈa-tabnūna bi-kulli rīʿin ˈāyatan taʿbaṯūna
Do you build futile a sign on every prominence?
وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَخْلُدُونَ
wa-tattaḫiḏūna maṣāniʿa laʿallakum taḫludūna
You set up structures as if you will be immortal,
وَإِذَا بَطَشْتُم بَطَشْتُمْ جَبَّارِينَ
wa-ˈiḏā baṭaštum baṭaštum ǧabbārīna
and when you seize [someone for punishment], you seize [him] like tyrants.
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
fa-ttaqū llāha wa-ˈaṭīʿūni
So be wary of Allah and obey me.
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَمَدَّكُم بِمَا تَعْلَمُونَ
wa-ttaqū llaḏī ˈamaddakum bi-mā taʿlamūna
Be wary of Him who has provided you with whatever you know,
أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنْعَـٰمٍ وَبَنِينَ
ˈamaddakum bi-ˈanʿāmin wa-banīna
and aided you with sons and with cattle,
وَجَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
wa-ǧannātin wa-ʿuyūnin
gardens and springs.
إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
ˈinnī ˈaḫāfu ʿalaykum ʿaḏāba yawmin ʿaẓīmin
Indeed I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous day.’
قَالُوا۟ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيْنَآ أَوَعَظْتَ أَمْ لَمْ تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْوَٰعِظِينَ
qālū sawāˈun ʿalaynā ˈa-waʿaẓta ˈam lam takun mina l-wāʿiẓīna
They said, ‘It is the same to us whether you exhort us or not.
إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
ˈin hāḏā ˈillā ḫuluqu l-ˈawwalīna
These are nothing but the traditions of the ancients,
وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ
wa-mā naḥnu bi-muʿaḏḏabīna
and we will not be punished.’
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهْلَكْنَـٰهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
fa-kaḏḏabūhu fa-ˈahlaknāhum ˈinna fī ḏālika la-ˈāyatan wa-mā kāna ˈakṯaruhum muˈminīna
So they impugned him, whereupon We destroyed them. There is indeed a sign in that; but most of them do not have faith.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
wa-ˈinna rabbaka la-huwa l-ʿazīzu r-raḥīmu
Indeed your Lord is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
kaḏḏabat ṯamūdu l-mursalīna
[The people of] Thamud impugned the apostles
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ صَـٰلِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
ˈiḏ qāla lahum ˈaḫūhum ṣāliḥun ˈa-lā tattaqūna
when Salih, their brother, said to them, ‘Will you not be wary [of Allah]?
إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
ˈinnī lakum rasūlun ˈamīnun
Indeed I am a trusted apostle [sent] to you.
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
fa-ttaqū llāha wa-ˈaṭīʿūni
So be wary of Allah and obey me.
وَمَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
wa-mā ˈasˈalukum ʿalayhi min ˈaǧrin ˈin ˈaǧriya ˈillā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīna
I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward lies only with the Lord of all the worlds.
أَتُتْرَكُونَ فِى مَا هَـٰهُنَآ ءَامِنِينَ
ˈa-tutrakūna fī mā hāhunā ˈāminīna
Will you be left secure in that which is here
فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
fī ǧannātin wa-ʿuyūnin
—amid gardens and springs,
وَزُرُوعٍ وَنَخْلٍ طَلْعُهَا هَضِيمٌ
wa-zurūʿin wa-naḫlin ṭalʿuhā haḍīmun
farms and date palms with dainty spathes
وَتَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا فَـٰرِهِينَ
wa-tanḥitūna mina l-ǧibāli buyūtan fārihīna
—while you skillfully hew out houses from the mountains?
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
fa-ttaqū llāha wa-ˈaṭīʿūni
So be wary of Allah and obey me,
وَلَا تُطِيعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ
wa-lā tuṭīʿū ˈamra l-musrifīna
and do not obey the dictates of the transgressors,
ٱلَّذِينَ يُفْسِدُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا يُصْلِحُونَ
allaḏīna yufsidūna fī l-ˈarḍi wa-lā yuṣliḥūna
who cause corruption in the land and do not bring about reform.’
قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَحَّرِينَ
qālū ˈinnamā ˈanta mina l-musaḥḥarīna
They said, ‘Indeed you are one of the bewitched.
مَآ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُنَا فَأْتِ بِـَٔايَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
mā ˈanta ˈillā bašarun miṯlunā fa-ˈti bi-ˈāyatin ˈin kunta mina ṣ-ṣādiqīna
You are just a human being like us. So bring us a sign, should you be truthful.’
قَالَ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةٌ لَّهَا شِرْبٌ وَلَكُمْ شِرْبُ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ
qāla hāḏihī nāqatun lahā širbun wa-lakum širbu yawmin maʿlūmin
He said, ‘This is a she-camel; she shall drink and you shall drink on known days.
وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوٓءٍ فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
wa-lā tamassūhā bi-sūˈin fa-yaˈḫuḏakum ʿaḏābu yawmin ʿaẓīmin
Do not cause her any harm, for then you shall be seized by the punishment of a terrible day.’
فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ نَـٰدِمِينَ
fa-ʿaqarūhā fa-ˈaṣbaḥū nādimīna
But they hamstrung her, whereupon they became regretful.
فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
fa-ˈaḫaḏahumu l-ʿaḏābu ˈinna fī ḏālika la-ˈāyatan wa-mā kāna ˈakṯaruhum muˈminīna
So the punishment seized them. There is indeed a sign in that; but most of them do not have faith.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
wa-ˈinna rabbaka la-huwa l-ʿazīzu r-raḥīmu
Indeed your Lord is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.
كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
kaḏḏabat qawmu lūṭin-i l-mursalīna
The people of Lot impugned the apostles
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
ˈiḏ qāla lahum ˈaḫūhum lūṭun ˈa-lā tattaqūna
when Lot, their brother, said to them, ‘Will you not be wary [of Allah]?
إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
ˈinnī lakum rasūlun ˈamīnun
Indeed I am a trusted apostle [sent] to you.
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
fa-ttaqū llāha wa-ˈaṭīʿūni
So be wary of Allah and obey me.
وَمَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
wa-mā ˈasˈalukum ʿalayhi min ˈaǧrin ˈin ˈaǧriya ˈillā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīna
I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward lies only with the Lord of all the worlds.
أَتَأْتُونَ ٱلذُّكْرَانَ مِنَ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
ˈa-taˈtūna ḏ-ḏukrāna mina l-ʿālamīna
What! Of all people do you come to males,
وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمْ رَبُّكُم مِّنْ أَزْوَٰجِكُم ۚ بَلْ أَنتُمْ قَوْمٌ عَادُونَ
wa-taḏarūna mā ḫalaqa lakum rabbukum min ˈazwāǧikum bal ˈantum qawmun ʿādūna
abandoning your wives your Lord has created for you? Indeed, you are a transgressing lot.’
قَالُوا۟ لَئِن لَّمْ تَنتَهِ يَـٰلُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْمُخْرَجِينَ
qālū la-ˈin lam tantahi yā-lūṭu la-takūnanna mina l-muḫraǧīna
They said, ‘Lot, if you do not desist, you will surely be banished.’
قَالَ إِنِّى لِعَمَلِكُم مِّنَ ٱلْقَالِينَ
qāla ˈinnī li-ʿamalikum mina l-qālīna
He said, ‘Indeed I detest your conduct.’
رَبِّ نَجِّنِى وَأَهْلِى مِمَّا يَعْمَلُونَ
rabbi naǧǧinī wa-ˈahlī mimmā yaʿmalūna
‘My Lord! Deliver me and my family from what they do.’
فَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ أَجْمَعِينَ
fa-naǧǧaynāhu wa-ˈahlahū ˈaǧmaʿīna
So We delivered him and all his family,
إِلَّا عَجُوزًا فِى ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ
ˈillā ʿaǧūzan fī l-ġābirīna
except an old woman who remained behind.
ثُمَّ دَمَّرْنَا ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ
ṯumma dammarnā l-ˈāḫarīna
Then We destroyed [all] the rest,
وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِم مَّطَرًا ۖ فَسَآءَ مَطَرُ ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ
wa-ˈamṭarnā ʿalayhim maṭaran fa-sāˈa maṭaru l-munḏarīna
and rained down upon them a rain [of stones]. Evil was the rain of those who were warned!
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
ˈinna fī ḏālika la-ˈāyatan wa-mā kāna ˈakṯaruhum muˈminīna
There is indeed a sign in that; but most of them do not have faith.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
wa-ˈinna rabbaka la-huwa l-ʿazīzu r-raḥīmu
Indeed your Lord is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.
كَذَّبَ أَصْحَـٰبُ لْـَٔيْكَةِ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
kaḏḏaba ˈaṣḥābu l-ˈaykati l-mursalīna
The inhabitants of Aykah impugned the apostles,
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ شُعَيْبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
ˈiḏ qāla lahum šuʿaybun ˈa-lā tattaqūna
when Shu‘ayb said to them, ‘Will you not be wary [of Allah]?
إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
ˈinnī lakum rasūlun ˈamīnun
Indeed I am a trusted apostle [sent] to you.
فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
fa-ttaqū llāha wa-ˈaṭīʿūni
So be wary of Allah and obey me.
وَمَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
wa-mā ˈasˈalukum ʿalayhi min ˈaǧrin ˈin ˈaǧriya ˈillā ʿalā rabbi l-ʿālamīna
I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward lies only with the Lord of all the worlds.
أَوْفُوا۟ ٱلْكَيْلَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْمُخْسِرِينَ
ˈawfū l-kayla wa-lā takūnū mina l-muḫsirīna
Observe the full measure, and do not be of those who give short measure.
وَزِنُوا۟ بِٱلْقِسْطَاسِ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمِ
wa-zinū bi-l-qisṭāsi l-mustaqīmi
Weigh with an even balance,
وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشْيَآءَهُمْ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ
wa-lā tabḫasū n-nāsa ˈašyāˈahum wa-lā taʿṯaw fī l-ˈarḍi mufsidīna
and do not cheat the people of their goods. Do not act wickedly on the earth, causing corruption.
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُمْ وَٱلْجِبِلَّةَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
wa-ttaqū llaḏī ḫalaqakum wa-l-ǧibillata l-ˈawwalīna
Be wary of Him who created you and the earlier generations.’
قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَحَّرِينَ
qālū ˈinnamā ˈanta mina l-musaḥḥarīna
They said, ‘Indeed you are one of the bewitched.
وَمَآ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ
wa-mā ˈanta ˈillā bašarun miṯlunā wa-ˈin naẓunnuka la-mina l-kāḏibīna
You are just a human being like us, and we indeed consider you to be a liar.
فَأَسْقِطْ عَلَيْنَا كِسَفًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
fa-ˈasqiṭ ʿalaynā kisafan mina s-samāˈi ˈin kunta mina ṣ-ṣādiqīna
Make a fragment of the sky falls upon us, should you be truthful.’
قَالَ رَبِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ
qāla rabbī ˈaʿlamu bi-mā taʿmalūna
He said, ‘My Lord knows best what you are doing.’
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمِ ٱلظُّلَّةِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
fa-kaḏḏabūhu fa-ˈaḫaḏahum ʿaḏābu yawmi ẓ-ẓullati ˈinnahū kāna ʿaḏāba yawmin ʿaẓīmin
So they impugned him, and then they were overtaken by the punishment of the day of the overshadowing cloud. It was indeed the punishment of a terrible day.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
ˈinna fī ḏālika la-ˈāyatan wa-mā kāna ˈakṯaruhum muˈminīna
There is indeed a sign in that; but most of them do not have faith.
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
wa-ˈinna rabbaka la-huwa l-ʿazīzu r-raḥīmu
Indeed your Lord is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِيلُ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
wa-ˈinnahū la-tanzīlu rabbi l-ʿālamīna
This is indeed [a Book] sent down by the Lord of all the worlds,
نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوحُ ٱلْأَمِينُ
nazala bihi r-rūḥu l-ˈamīnu
brought down by the Trustworthy Spirit
عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنذِرِينَ
ʿalā qalbika li-takūna mina l-munḏirīna
upon your heart (so that you may be one of the warners),
بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِىٍّ مُّبِينٍ
bi-lisānin ʿarabiyyin mubīnin
in a clear Arabic language.
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِى زُبُرِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
wa-ˈinnahū la-fī zuburi l-ˈawwalīna
It is indeed [foretold] in the scriptures of the ancients.
أَوَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُمْ ءَايَةً أَن يَعْلَمَهُۥ عُلَمَـٰٓؤُا۟ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ
ˈa-wa-lam yakun lahum ˈāyatan ˈan yaʿlamahū ʿulamāˈu banī ˈisrāˈīla
Is it not a sign for them that the learned of the Children of Israel recognize it?
وَلَوْ نَزَّلْنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ بَعْضِ ٱلْأَعْجَمِينَ
wa-law nazzalnāhu ʿalā baʿḍi l-ˈaʿǧamīna
Had We sent it down upon some non-Arab
فَقَرَأَهُۥ عَلَيْهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ مُؤْمِنِينَ
fa-qaraˈahū ʿalayhim mā kānū bihī muˈminīna
and had he recited it to them, they would not have believed in it.
كَذَٰلِكَ سَلَكْنَـٰهُ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
ka-ḏālika salaknāhu fī qulūbi l-muǧrimīna
This is how We let it pass through the hearts of the guilty:
لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ يَرَوُا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَلِيمَ
lā yuˈminūna bihī ḥattā yarawu l-ʿaḏāba l-ˈalīma
they do not believe in it until they sight the painful punishment.
فَيَأْتِيَهُم بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
fa-yaˈtiyahum baġtatan wa-hum lā yašʿurūna
It will overtake them suddenly while they are unaware.
فَيَقُولُوا۟ هَلْ نَحْنُ مُنظَرُونَ
fa-yaqūlū hal naḥnu munẓarūna
Thereupon they will say, ‘Shall we be granted any respite?’
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ
ˈa-fa-bi-ʿaḏābinā yastaʿǧilūna
So do they seek to hasten on Our punishment?
أَفَرَءَيْتَ إِن مَّتَّعْنَـٰهُمْ سِنِينَ
ˈa-fa-raˈayta ˈin mattaʿnāhum sinīna
Tell me, should We let them enjoy for some years,
ثُمَّ جَآءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ
ṯumma ǧāˈahum mā kānū yūʿadūna
then there comes to them what they have been promised,
مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يُمَتَّعُونَ
mā ˈaġnā ʿanhum mā kānū yumattaʿūna
of what avail to them will be that which they were given to enjoy?
وَمَآ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ
wa-mā ˈahlaknā min qaryatin ˈillā lahā munḏirūna
We have not destroyed any town without its having warners,
ذِكْرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِينَ
ḏikrā wa-mā kunnā ẓālimīna
for the sake of admonition, and We were not unjust.
وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتْ بِهِ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينُ
wa-mā tanazzalat bihi š-šayāṭīnu
It has not been brought down by the devils.
وَمَا يَنۢبَغِى لَهُمْ وَمَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ
wa-mā yanbaġī lahum wa-mā yastaṭīʿūna
Neither does it behoove them, nor are they capable [of doing that].
إِنَّهُمْ عَنِ ٱلسَّمْعِ لَمَعْزُولُونَ
ˈinnahum ʿani s-samʿi la-maʿzūlūna
Indeed, they are kept at bay [even] from hearing it.
فَلَا تَدْعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُعَذَّبِينَ
fa-lā tadʿu maʿa llāhi ˈilāhan ˈāḫara fa-takūna mina l-muʿaḏḏabīna
So do not invoke any god besides Allah, lest you should be among the punished.
وَأَنذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ ٱلْأَقْرَبِينَ
wa-ˈanḏir ʿašīrataka l-ˈaqrabīna
Warn the nearest of your kinsfolk,
وَٱخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
wa-ḫfiḍ ǧanāḥaka li-mani ttabaʿaka mina l-muˈminīna
and lower your wing to the faithful who follow you.
فَإِنْ عَصَوْكَ فَقُلْ إِنِّى بَرِىٓءٌ مِّمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ
fa-ˈin ʿaṣawka fa-qul ˈinnī barīˈun mimmā taʿmalūna
But if they disobey you, say, ‘I am absolved of what you do.’
وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
wa-tawakkal ʿalā l-ʿazīzi r-raḥīmi
And put your trust in the All-mighty, the All-merciful,
ٱلَّذِى يَرَىٰكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ
allaḏī yarāka ḥīna taqūmu
who sees you when you stand [for prayer],
وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِى ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ
wa-taqallubaka fī s-sāǧidīna
and your going about among those who prostrate.
إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ
ˈinnahū huwa s-samīʿu l-ʿalīmu
Indeed He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing.
هَلْ أُنَبِّئُكُمْ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينُ
hal ˈunabbiˈukum ʿalā man tanazzalu š-šayāṭīnu
Should I inform you on whom the devils descend?
تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِيمٍ
tanazzalu ʿalā kulli ˈaffākin ˈaṯīmin
They descend on every sinful liar.
يُلْقُونَ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ كَـٰذِبُونَ
yulqūna s-samʿa wa-ˈakṯaruhum kāḏibūna
They eavesdrop, and most of them are liars.
وَٱلشُّعَرَآءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ ٱلْغَاوُۥنَ
wa-š-šuʿarāˈu yattabiʿuhumu l-ġāwūna
As for the poets, [only] the perverse follow them.
أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّهُمْ فِى كُلِّ وَادٍ يَهِيمُونَ
ˈa-lam tara ˈannahum fī kulli wādin yahīmūna
Have you not regarded that they rove in every valley,
وَأَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفْعَلُونَ
wa-ˈannahum yaqūlūna mā lā yafʿalūna
and that they say what they do not do?
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَذَكَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرًا وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا۟ ۗ وَسَيَعْلَمُ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوٓا۟ أَىَّ مُنقَلَبٍ يَنقَلِبُونَ
ˈillā llaḏīna ˈāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti wa-ḏakarū llāha kaṯīran wa-ntaṣarū min baʿdi mā ẓulimū wa-sa-yaʿlamu llaḏīna ẓalamū ˈayya munqalabin yanqalibūna
Barring those who have faith, do righteous deeds, and remember Allah much often, and vindicate themselves after they have been wronged. And the wrongdoers will soon know at what goal they will end up.
