Surah Ad-Dukhaan

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 44:1

   حمٓ﴿١﴾

   ḥ-m (ḥā mīm)

   Ha, Meem.

2. 44:2

   وَٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ٱلْمُبِينِ﴿٢﴾

   wa-l-kitābi l-mubīni

   By the Manifest Book!

3. 44:3

   إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ فِى لَيْلَةٍ مُّبَـٰرَكَةٍ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِينَ﴿٣﴾

   ˈinnā ˈanzalnāhu fī laylatin mubārakatin ˈinnā kunnā munḏirīna

   We sent it down on a blessed night, and We have been warning [mankind].

4. 44:4

   فِيهَا يُفْرَقُ كُلُّ أَمْرٍ حَكِيمٍ﴿٤﴾

   fīhā yufraqu kullu ˈamrin ḥakīmin

   Every definitive matter is resolved on it,

5. 44:5

   أَمْرًا مِّنْ عِندِنَآ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِلِينَ﴿٥﴾

   ˈamran min ʿindinā ˈinnā kunnā mursilīna

   as an ordinance from Us. We have been sending [apostles]

6. 44:6

   رَحْمَةً مِّن رَّبِّكَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ﴿٦﴾

   raḥmatan min rabbika ˈinnahū huwa s-samīʿu l-ʿalīmu

   as a mercy from your Lord—indeed He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing—

7. 44:7

   رَبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِينَ﴿٧﴾

   rabbi s-samāwāti wa-l-ˈarḍi wa-mā baynahumā ˈin kuntum mūqinīna

   the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and whatever is between them, should you have conviction.

8. 44:8

   لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ ۖ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ﴿٨﴾

   lā ˈilāha ˈillā huwa yuḥyī wa-yumītu rabbukum wa-rabbu ˈābāˈikumu l-ˈawwalīna

   There is no god except Him: He gives life and brings death, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.

9. 44:9

   بَلْ هُمْ فِى شَكٍّ يَلْعَبُونَ﴿٩﴾

   bal hum fī šakkin yalʿabūna

   But they play around in doubt.

10. 44:10

    فَٱرْتَقِبْ يَوْمَ تَأْتِى ٱلسَّمَآءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُّبِينٍ﴿١٠﴾

    fa-rtaqib yawma taˈtī s-samāˈu bi-duḫānin mubīnin

    So watch out for the day when the sky brings on a manifest smoke,

11. 44:11

    يَغْشَى ٱلنَّاسَ ۖ هَـٰذَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ﴿١١﴾

    yaġšā n-nāsa hāḏā ʿaḏābun ˈalīmun

    enveloping the people. [They will cry out:] ‘This is a painful punishment.

12. 44:12

    رَّبَّنَا ٱكْشِفْ عَنَّا ٱلْعَذَابَ إِنَّا مُؤْمِنُونَ﴿١٢﴾

    rabbanā kšif ʿannā l-ʿaḏāba ˈinnā muˈminūna

    Our Lord! Remove this punishment from us. Indeed we have believed!’

13. 44:13

    أَنَّىٰ لَهُمُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ وَقَدْ جَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ مُّبِينٌ﴿١٣﴾

    ˈannā lahumu ḏ-ḏikrā wa-qad ǧāˈahum rasūlun mubīnun

    What will the admonition avail them, when a manifest apostle had already come to them,

14. 44:14

    ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوْا۟ عَنْهُ وَقَالُوا۟ مُعَلَّمٌ مَّجْنُونٌ﴿١٤﴾

    ṯumma tawallaw ʿanhu wa-qālū muʿallamun maǧnūnun

    but they turned away from him, and said, ‘A tutored madman?’

15. 44:15

    إِنَّا كَاشِفُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابِ قَلِيلًا ۚ إِنَّكُمْ عَآئِدُونَ﴿١٥﴾

    ˈinnā kāšifū l-ʿaḏābi qalīlan ˈinnakum ʿāˈidūna

    Indeed We will withdraw the punishment a little; but you will revert [to your earlier ways].

16. 44:16

    يَوْمَ نَبْطِشُ ٱلْبَطْشَةَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ إِنَّا مُنتَقِمُونَ﴿١٦﴾

    yawma nabṭišu l-baṭšata l-kubrā ˈinnā muntaqimūna

    The day We shall strike with the most terrible striking, We will indeed take vengeance [on them].

17. 44:17

    وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَجَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ كَرِيمٌ﴿١٧﴾

    wa-la-qad fatannā qablahum qawma firʿawna wa-ǧāˈahum rasūlun karīmun

    Certainly We tried the people of Pharaoh before them, when a noble apostle came to them,

18. 44:18

    أَنْ أَدُّوٓا۟ إِلَىَّ عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ﴿١٨﴾

    ˈan ˈaddū ˈilayya ʿibāda llāhi ˈinnī lakum rasūlun ˈamīnun

    [saying,] ‘Give over the servants of Allah to me; indeed I am a trusted apostle [sent] to you.

19. 44:19

    وَأَن لَّا تَعْلُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّىٓ ءَاتِيكُم بِسُلْطَـٰنٍ مُّبِينٍ﴿١٩﴾

    wa-ˈan lā taʿlū ʿalā llāhi ˈinnī ˈātīkum bi-sulṭānin mubīnin

    Do not defy Allah. Indeed I bring you a manifest authority.

20. 44:20

    وَإِنِّى عُذْتُ بِرَبِّى وَرَبِّكُمْ أَن تَرْجُمُونِ﴿٢٠﴾

    wa-ˈinnī ʿuḏtu bi-rabbī wa-rabbikum ˈan tarǧumūni

    I seek the protection of my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me.

21. 44:21

    وَإِن لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا۟ لِى فَٱعْتَزِلُونِ﴿٢١﴾

    wa-ˈin lam tuˈminū lī fa-ʿtazilūni

    And if you do not believe me, keep out of my way.’

22. 44:22

    فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ قَوْمٌ مُّجْرِمُونَ﴿٢٢﴾

    fa-daʿā rabbahū ˈanna hāˈulāˈi qawmun muǧrimūna

    Then he invoked his Lord, [saying,] ‘These are indeed a guilty lot.’

23. 44:23

    فَأَسْرِ بِعِبَادِى لَيْلًا إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ﴿٢٣﴾

    fa-ˈasri bi-ʿibādī laylan ˈinnakum muttabaʿūna

    [Allah told him,] ‘Set out by night with My servants; for you will be pursued.

24. 44:24

    وَٱتْرُكِ ٱلْبَحْرَ رَهْوًا ۖ إِنَّهُمْ جُندٌ مُّغْرَقُونَ﴿٢٤﴾

    wa-truki l-baḥra rahwan ˈinnahum ǧundun muġraqūna

    Leave behind the sea unmoving; for they will be a drowned host.’

25. 44:25

    كَمْ تَرَكُوا۟ مِن جَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ﴿٢٥﴾

    kam tarakū min ǧannātin wa-ʿuyūnin

    How many gardens and springs did they leave behind!

26. 44:26

    وَزُرُوعٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ﴿٢٦﴾

    wa-zurūʿin wa-maqāmin karīmin

    Fields and splendid places,

27. 44:27

    وَنَعْمَةٍ كَانُوا۟ فِيهَا فَـٰكِهِينَ﴿٢٧﴾

    wa-naʿmatin kānū fīhā fākihīna

    and the affluence wherein they rejoiced!

28. 44:28

    كَذَٰلِكَ ۖ وَأَوْرَثْنَـٰهَا قَوْمًا ءَاخَرِينَ﴿٢٨﴾

    ka-ḏālika wa-ˈawraṯnāhā qawman ˈāḫarīna

    So it was; and We bequeathed them to another people.

29. 44:29

    فَمَا بَكَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُنظَرِينَ﴿٢٩﴾

    fa-mā bakat ʿalayhimu s-samāˈu wa-l-ˈarḍu wa-mā kānū munẓarīna

    So neither the sky wept for them, nor the earth; nor were they granted any respite.

30. 44:30

    وَلَقَدْ نَجَّيْنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ مِنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْمُهِينِ﴿٣٠﴾

    wa-la-qad naǧǧaynā banī ˈisrāˈīla mina l-ʿaḏābi l-muhīni

    Certainly We delivered the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment

31. 44:31

    مِن فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَالِيًا مِّنَ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ﴿٣١﴾

    min firʿawna ˈinnahū kāna ʿāliyan mina l-musrifīna

    of Pharaoh. Indeed, he was a tyrant among the transgressors.

32. 44:32

    وَلَقَدِ ٱخْتَرْنَـٰهُمْ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ عَلَى ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ﴿٣٢﴾

    wa-la-qadi ḫtarnāhum ʿalā ʿilmin ʿalā l-ʿālamīna

    Certainly We chose them knowingly above all the nations,

33. 44:33

    وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ مَا فِيهِ بَلَـٰٓؤٌا۟ مُّبِينٌ﴿٣٣﴾

    wa-ˈātaynāhum mina l-ˈāyāti mā fīhi balāˈun mubīnun

    and We gave them some signs in which there was a manifest test.

34. 44:34

    إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَيَقُولُونَ﴿٣٤﴾

    ˈinna hāˈulāˈi la-yaqūlūna

    These ones say,

35. 44:35

    إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّا مَوْتَتُنَا ٱلْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُنشَرِينَ﴿٣٥﴾

    ˈin hiya ˈillā mawtatunā l-ˈūlā wa-mā naḥnu bi-munšarīna

    ‘It will be only our first death, and we shall not be resurrected.

36. 44:36

    فَأْتُوا۟ بِـَٔابَآئِنَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ﴿٣٦﴾

    fa-ˈtū bi-ˈābāˈinā ˈin kuntum ṣādiqīna

    Bring our fathers back [to life], if you are truthful.’

37. 44:37

    أَهُمْ خَيْرٌ أَمْ قَوْمُ تُبَّعٍ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ أَهْلَكْنَـٰهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ﴿٣٧﴾

    ˈa-hum ḫayrun ˈam qawmu tubbaʿin wa-llaḏīna min qablihim ˈahlaknāhum ˈinnahum kānū muǧrimīna

    Are they better, or the people of Tubba‘, and those who were before them? We destroyed them; indeed, they were guilty.

38. 44:38

    وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا لَـٰعِبِينَ﴿٣٨﴾

    wa-mā ḫalaqnā s-samāwāti wa-l-ˈarḍa wa-mā baynahumā lāʿibīna

    We did not create the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them for play.

39. 44:39

    مَا خَلَقْنَـٰهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ﴿٣٩﴾

    mā ḫalaqnāhumā ˈillā bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-lākinna ˈakṯarahum lā yaʿlamūna

    We did not create them except with consummate wisdom; but most of them do not know.

40. 44:40

    إِنَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ مِيقَـٰتُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ﴿٤٠﴾

    ˈinna yawma l-faṣli mīqātuhum ˈaǧmaʿīna

    Indeed the Day of Judgement is the tryst for them all,

41. 44:41

    يَوْمَ لَا يُغْنِى مَوْلًى عَن مَّوْلًى شَيْـًٔا وَلَا هُمْ يُنصَرُونَ﴿٤١﴾

    yawma lā yuġnī mawlan ʿan mawlan šayˈan wa-lā hum yunṣarūna

    the day when a friend will not avail a friend in any way, nor will they be helped,

42. 44:42

    إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ﴿٤٢﴾

    ˈillā man raḥima llāhu ˈinnahū huwa l-ʿazīzu r-raḥīmu

    except for him on whom Allah has mercy. Indeed He is the All-mighty, the All-merciful.

43. 44:43

    إِنَّ شَجَرَتَ ٱلزَّقُّومِ﴿٤٣﴾

    ˈinna šaǧarata z-zaqqūmi

    Indeed the tree of Zaqqum

44. 44:44

    طَعَامُ ٱلْأَثِيمِ﴿٤٤﴾

    ṭaʿāmu l-ˈaṯīmi

    will be the food of the sinful.

45. 44:45

    كَٱلْمُهْلِ يَغْلِى فِى ٱلْبُطُونِ﴿٤٥﴾

    ka-l-muhli yaġlī fī l-buṭūni

    Like molten copper it will boil in their bellies,

46. 44:46

    كَغَلْىِ ٱلْحَمِيمِ﴿٤٦﴾

    ka-ġalyi l-ḥamīmi

    seething like boiling water.

47. 44:47

    خُذُوهُ فَٱعْتِلُوهُ إِلَىٰ سَوَآءِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ﴿٤٧﴾

    ḫuḏūhu fa-ʿtilūhu ˈilā sawāˈi l-ǧaḥīmi

    [The keepers of hell will be told,] ‘Seize him and drag him to the middle of hell,

48. 44:48

    ثُمَّ صُبُّوا۟ فَوْقَ رَأْسِهِۦ مِنْ عَذَابِ ٱلْحَمِيمِ﴿٤٨﴾

    ṯumma ṣubbū fawqa raˈsihī min ʿaḏābi l-ḥamīmi

    then pour over his head boiling water as punishment,

49. 44:49

    ذُقْ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْكَرِيمُ﴿٤٩﴾

    ḏuq ˈinnaka ˈanta l-ʿazīzu l-karīmu

    [and tell them,] “Taste this! Indeed you are the [self-styled] mighty and noble!

50. 44:50

    إِنَّ هَـٰذَا مَا كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَمْتَرُونَ﴿٥٠﴾

    ˈinna hāḏā mā kuntum bihī tamtarūna

    This is what you used to doubt!’

51. 44:51

    إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى مَقَامٍ أَمِينٍ﴿٥١﴾

    ˈinna l-muttaqīna fī maqāmin ˈamīnin

    Indeed the Godwary will be in a safe place,

52. 44:52

    فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ﴿٥٢﴾

    fī ǧannātin wa-ʿuyūnin

    amid gardens and springs,

53. 44:53

    يَلْبَسُونَ مِن سُندُسٍ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٍ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَ﴿٥٣﴾

    yalbasūna min sundusin wa-ˈistabraqin mutaqābilīna

    dressed in fine silk and brocade, sitting face to face.

54. 44:54

    كَذَٰلِكَ وَزَوَّجْنَـٰهُم بِحُورٍ عِينٍ﴿٥٤﴾

    ka-ḏālika wa-zawwaǧnāhum bi-ḥūrin ʿīnin

    So shall it be, and We shall wed them to black-eyed houris.

55. 44:55

    يَدْعُونَ فِيهَا بِكُلِّ فَـٰكِهَةٍ ءَامِنِينَ﴿٥٥﴾

    yadʿūna fīhā bi-kulli fākihatin ˈāminīna

    Secure [from any kind of harm,] there they will call for every kind of fruit [they wish].

56. 44:56

    لَا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا ٱلْمَوْتَ إِلَّا ٱلْمَوْتَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ ۖ وَوَقَىٰهُمْ عَذَابَ ٱلْجَحِيمِ﴿٥٦﴾

    lā yaḏūqūna fīhā l-mawta ˈillā l-mawtata l-ˈūlā wa-waqāhum ʿaḏāba l-ǧaḥīmi

    Other than the first death, they will not taste death therein, and He will save them from the punishment of hell

57. 44:57

    فَضْلًا مِّن رَّبِّكَ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ﴿٥٧﴾

    faḍlan min rabbika ḏālika huwa l-fawzu l-ʿaẓīmu

    —a grace from your Lord. That is the great success.

58. 44:58

    فَإِنَّمَا يَسَّرْنَـٰهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ﴿٥٨﴾

    fa-ˈinnamā yassarnāhu bi-lisānika laʿallahum yataḏakkarūna

    Indeed We have made it simple in your language, so that they may take admonition.

59. 44:59

    فَٱرْتَقِبْ إِنَّهُم مُّرْتَقِبُونَ﴿٥٩﴾

    fa-rtaqib ˈinnahum murtaqibūna

    So wait! They [too] are waiting.
