Surah 53
wa-n-naǧmi ˈiḏā hawā
By the star when it sets:
mā ḍalla ṣāḥibukum wa-mā ġawā
your companion has neither gone astray, nor amiss.
wa-mā yanṭiqu ʿani l-hawā
Nor does he speak out of [his own] desire:
ˈin huwa ˈillā waḥyun yūḥā
it is just a revelation that is revealed [to him],
ʿallamahū šadīdu l-quwā
taught him by one of great powers,
ḏū mirratin fa-stawā
possessed of sound judgement. He settled,
wa-huwa bi-l-ˈufuqi l-ˈaʿlā
while he was on the highest horizon.
ṯumma danā fa-tadallā
Then he drew nearer and nearer
fa-kāna qāba qawsayni ˈaw ˈadnā
until he was within two bows’ length or even nearer,
fa-ˈawḥā ˈilā ʿabdihī mā ˈawḥā
whereat He revealed to His servant whatever He revealed.
mā kaḏaba l-fuˈādu mā raˈā
The heart did not deny what it saw.
ˈa-fa-tumārūnahū ʿalā mā yarā
Will you then dispute with him about what he saw?!
wa-la-qad raˈāhu nazlatan ˈuḫrā
Certainly he saw it yet another time,
ʿinda sidrati l-muntahā
by the Lote Tree of the Ultimate Boundary,
ʿindahā ǧannatu l-maˈwā
near which is the Garden of the Abode,
ˈiḏ yaġšā s-sidrata mā yaġšā
when there covered the Lote Tree what covered it.
mā zāġa l-baṣaru wa-mā ṭaġā
His gaze did not swerve, nor did it overstep the bounds.
la-qad raˈā min ˈāyāti rabbihi l-kubrā
Certainly he saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord.
ˈa-fa-raˈaytumu l-lāta wa-l-ʿuzzā
Have you considered Lat and ‘Uzza?
wa-manāta ṯ-ṯāliṯata l-ˈuḫrā
and Manat, the third one?
ˈa-lakumu ḏ-ḏakaru wa-lahu l-ˈunṯā
Are you to have males and He females?
tilka ˈiḏan qismatun ḍīzā
That, then, will be an unfair division!
ˈin hiya ˈillā ˈasmāˈun sammaytumūhā ˈantum wa-ˈābāˈukum mā ˈanzala llāhu bihā min sulṭānin ˈin yattabiʿūna ˈillā ẓ-ẓanna wa-mā tahwā l-ˈanfusu wa-la-qad ǧāˈahum min rabbihimu l-hudā
These are but names, which you have coined—you and your fathers—for which Allah has not sent down any authority. They follow nothing but conjectures and the desires of the [lower] soul, while there has already come to them the guidance from their Lord.
ˈam li-l-ˈinsāni mā tamannā
Shall man have whatever he yearns for?
fa-li-llāhi l-ˈāḫiratu wa-l-ˈūlā
Yet to Allah belong this world and the Hereafter.
wa-kam min malakin fī s-samāwāti lā tuġnī šafāʿatuhum šayˈan ˈillā min baʿdi ˈan yaˈḏana llāhu li-man yašāˈu wa-yarḍā
How many an angel there is in the heavens whose intercession is of not any avail, except after Allah permits whomever He wishes and approves of!
ˈinna llaḏīna lā yuˈminūna bi-l-ˈāḫirati la-yusammūna l-malāˈikata tasmiyata l-ˈunṯā
Indeed those who do not believe in the Hereafter give female names to the angels.
wa-mā lahum bihī min ʿilmin ˈin yattabiʿūna ˈillā ẓ-ẓanna wa-ˈinna ẓ-ẓanna lā yuġnī mina l-ḥaqqi šayˈan
They do not have any knowledge of that. They follow nothing but conjectures, and conjecture is no substitute for the truth.
fa-ˈaʿriḍ ʿan man tawallā ʿan ḏikrinā wa-lam yurid ˈillā l-ḥayāta d-dunyā
So avoid those who turn away from Our remembrance and desire nothing but the life of the world.
ḏālika mablaġuhum mina l-ʿilmi ˈinna rabbaka huwa ˈaʿlamu bi-man ḍalla ʿan sabīlihī wa-huwa ˈaʿlamu bi-mani htadā
That is the ultimate reach of their knowledge. Indeed your Lord knows best those who stray from His way, and He knows best those who are [rightly] guided.
wa-li-llāhi mā fī s-samāwāti wa-mā fī l-ˈarḍi li-yaǧziya llaḏīna ˈasāˈū bi-mā ʿamilū wa-yaǧziya llaḏīna ˈaḥsanū bi-l-ḥusnā
To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, that He may requite those who do evil for what they have done, and reward those who do good with the best [of rewards].
allaḏīna yaǧtanibūna kabāˈira l-ˈiṯmi wa-l-fawāḥiša ˈillā l-lamama ˈinna rabbaka wāsiʿu l-maġfirati huwa ˈaʿlamu bikum ˈiḏ ˈanšaˈakum mina l-ˈarḍi wa-ˈiḏ ˈantum ˈaǧinnatun fī buṭūni ˈummahātikum fa-lā tuzakkū ˈanfusakum huwa ˈaʿlamu bi-mani ttaqā
Those who avoid major sins and indecencies, apart from [minor and occasional] lapses. Indeed your Lord is expansive in [His] forgiveness. He knows you best since [the time] He produced you from the earth and since you were foetuses in the bellies of your mothers. So do not flaunt your piety: He knows best those who are Godwary.
ˈa-fa-raˈayta llaḏī tawallā
Did you see him who turned away,
wa-ˈaʿṭā qalīlan wa-ˈakdā
gave a little and held off?
ˈa-ʿindahū ʿilmu l-ġaybi fa-huwa yarā
Does he have the knowledge of the Unseen so that he sees?
ˈam lam yunabbaˈ bi-mā fī ṣuḥufi mūsā
Has he not been informed of what is in the scriptures of Moses,
wa-ˈibrāhīma llaḏī waffā
and of Abraham, who fulfilled [his summons]:
ˈallā taziru wāziratun wizra ˈuḫrā
that no bearer shall bear another’s burden,
wa-ˈan laysa li-l-ˈinsāni ˈillā mā saʿā
that nothing belongs to man except what he strives for,
wa-ˈanna saʿyahū sawfa yurā
and that he will soon be shown his endeavour,
ṯumma yuǧzāhu l-ǧazāˈa l-ˈawfā
then he will be rewarded for it with the fullest reward;
wa-ˈanna ˈilā rabbika l-muntahā
that the terminus is toward your Lord,
wa-ˈannahū huwa ˈaḍḥaka wa-ˈabkā
that it is He who makes [men] laugh, and weep,
wa-ˈannahū huwa ˈamāta wa-ˈaḥyā
that it is He who brings death and gives life,
wa-ˈannahū ḫalaqa z-zawǧayni ḏ-ḏakara wa-l-ˈunṯā
that it is He who created the mates, the male and the female,
min nuṭfatin ˈiḏā tumnā
from a drop of [seminal] fluid when emitted;
wa-ˈanna ʿalayhi n-našˈata l-ˈuḫrā
that with Him lies the second genesis,
wa-ˈannahū huwa ˈaġnā wa-ˈaqnā
that it is He who enriches and grants possessions,
wa-ˈannahū huwa rabbu š-šiʿrā
that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius;
wa-ˈannahū ˈahlaka ʿādan-i l-ˈūlā
that it is He who destroyed the former ‘Ad,
wa-ṯamūda fa-mā ˈabqā
and Thamud, sparing none [of them];
wa-qawma nūḥin min qablu ˈinnahum kānū hum ˈaẓlama wa-ˈaṭġā
and the people of Noah before that; indeed they were more unjust and rebellious;
wa-l-muˈtafikata ˈahwā
and He overthrew the town that was overturned,
fa-ġaššāhā mā ġaššā
covering it with what covered it.
fa-bi-ˈayyi ˈālāˈi rabbika tatamārā
Then which of the bounties of your Lord will you dispute?
hāḏā naḏīrun mina n-nuḏuri l-ˈūlā
This is a warner, [in the tradition] of the warners of old.
ˈazifati l-ˈāzifatu
The Imminent [Hour] is near at hand.
laysa lahā min dūni llāhi kāšifatun
There is none who may unveil it besides Allah.
ˈa-fa-min hāḏā l-ḥadīṯi taʿǧabūna
Will you then wonder at this discourse,
wa-taḍḥakūna wa-lā tabkūna
and laugh and not weep,
wa-ˈantum sāmidūna
while you remain heedless?!
fa-sǧudū li-llāhi wa-ʿbudū
So prostrate yourselves to Allah and worship Him!
English translation: Ali Quli Qarai.
