Surah Al-Qamar

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 54:1

   ٱقْتَرَبَتِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ وَٱنشَقَّ ٱلْقَمَرُ﴿١﴾

   iqtarabati s-sāʿatu wa-nšaqqa l-qamaru

   The Hour has drawn near and the moon is split.

2. 54:2

   وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ ءَايَةً يُعْرِضُوا۟ وَيَقُولُوا۟ سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ﴿٢﴾

   wa-ˈin yaraw ˈāyatan yuʿriḍū wa-yaqūlū siḥrun mustamirrun

   If they see a sign, they turn away, and say, ‘An incessant magic!’

3. 54:3

   وَكَذَّبُوا۟ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ﴿٣﴾

   wa-kaḏḏabū wa-ttabaʿū ˈahwāˈahum wa-kullu ˈamrin mustaqirrun

   They denied and followed their own desires, and every matter has a setting [appropriate to it].

4. 54:4

   وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزْدَجَرٌ﴿٤﴾

   wa-la-qad ǧāˈahum mina l-ˈanbāˈi mā fīhi muzdaǧarun

   There have already come to them reports containing admonishment,

5. 54:5

   حِكْمَةٌۢ بَـٰلِغَةٌ ۖ فَمَا تُغْنِ ٱلنُّذُرُ﴿٥﴾

   ḥikmatun bāliġatun fa-mā tuġni n-nuḏuru

   [and representing] far-reaching wisdom; but warnings are of no avail!

6. 54:6

   فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ ۘ يَوْمَ يَدْعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَىْءٍ نُّكُرٍ﴿٦﴾

   fa-tawalla ʿanhum yawma yadʿu d-dāʿi ˈilā šayˈin nukurin

   So turn away from them! The day when the Caller calls to a dire thing,

7. 54:7

   خُشَّعًا أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمْ جَرَادٌ مُّنتَشِرٌ﴿٧﴾

   ḫuššaʿan ˈabṣāruhum yaḫruǧūna mina l-ˈaǧdāṯi ka-ˈannahum ǧarādun muntaširun

   they will emerge from the graves as if they were scattered locusts with a humbled look [in their eyes],

8. 54:8

   مُّهْطِعِينَ إِلَى ٱلدَّاعِ ۖ يَقُولُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌ﴿٨﴾

   muhṭiʿīna ˈilā d-dāʿi yaqūlu l-kāfirūna hāḏā yawmun ʿasirun

   scrambling toward the summoner. The faithless will say, ‘This is a hard day!’

9. 54:9

   كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ فَكَذَّبُوا۟ عَبْدَنَا وَقَالُوا۟ مَجْنُونٌ وَٱزْدُجِرَ﴿٩﴾

   kaḏḏabat qablahum qawmu nūḥin fa-kaḏḏabū ʿabdanā wa-qālū maǧnūnun wa-zduǧira

   The people of Noah impugned before them. So they impugned Our servant and said, ‘A crazy man,’ and he was reviled.

10. 54:10

    فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَغْلُوبٌ فَٱنتَصِرْ﴿١٠﴾

    fa-daʿā rabbahū ˈannī maġlūbun fa-ntaṣir

    Thereat he invoked his Lord, [saying,] ‘I have been overcome, so help [me].’

11. 54:11

    فَفَتَحْنَآ أَبْوَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَآءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍ﴿١١﴾

    fa-fataḥnā ˈabwāba s-samāˈi bi-māˈin munhamirin

    Then We opened the gates of the sky with pouring waters,

12. 54:12

    وَفَجَّرْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَٱلْتَقَى ٱلْمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَ﴿١٢﴾

    wa-faǧǧarnā l-ˈarḍa ʿuyūnan fa-ltaqā l-māˈu ʿalā ˈamrin qad qudira

    and We made the earth burst forth with springs, and the waters met for a preordained purpose.

13. 54:13

    وَحَمَلْنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلْوَٰحٍ وَدُسُرٍ﴿١٣﴾

    wa-ḥamalnāhu ʿalā ḏāti ˈalwāḥin wa-dusurin

    We bore him on a vessel made of planks and nails,

14. 54:14

    تَجْرِى بِأَعْيُنِنَا جَزَآءً لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَ﴿١٤﴾

    taǧrī bi-ˈaʿyuninā ǧazāˈan li-man kāna kufira

    which sailed [over the flood waters] in Our sight, as a retribution for him who was met with disbelief.

15. 54:15

    وَلَقَد تَّرَكْنَـٰهَآ ءَايَةً فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ﴿١٥﴾

    wa-la-qad taraknāhā ˈāyatan fa-hal min muddakirin

    Certainly We have left it as a sign; so is there anyone who will be admonished?

16. 54:16

    فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ﴿١٦﴾

    fa-kayfa kāna ʿaḏābī wa-nuḏuri

    So how were My punishment and warnings?

17. 54:17

    وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ﴿١٧﴾

    wa-la-qad yassarnā l-qurˈāna li-ḏ-ḏikri fa-hal min muddakirin

    Certainly We have made the Quran simple for the sake of admonishment. So is there anyone who will be admonished?

18. 54:18

    كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ﴿١٨﴾

    kaḏḏabat ʿādun fa-kayfa kāna ʿaḏābī wa-nuḏuri

    [The people of] ‘Ad impugned [their apostle]. So how were My punishment and warnings?

19. 54:19

    إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِى يَوْمِ نَحْسٍ مُّسْتَمِرٍّ﴿١٩﴾

    ˈinnā ˈarsalnā ʿalayhim rīḥan ṣarṣaran fī yawmi naḥsin mustamirrin

    Indeed We unleashed upon them an icy gale on an incessantly ill-fated day,

20. 54:20

    تَنزِعُ ٱلنَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ مُّنقَعِرٍ﴿٢٠﴾

    tanziʿu n-nāsa ka-ˈannahum ˈaʿǧāzu naḫlin munqaʿirin

    knocking down people as if they were trunks of uprooted palm trees.

21. 54:21

    فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ﴿٢١﴾

    fa-kayfa kāna ʿaḏābī wa-nuḏuri

    So how were My punishment and warnings?!

22. 54:22

    وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ﴿٢٢﴾

    wa-la-qad yassarnā l-qurˈāna li-ḏ-ḏikri fa-hal min muddakirin

    Certainly We have made the Quran simple for the sake of admonishment. So is there anyone who will be admonished?

23. 54:23

    كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِٱلنُّذُرِ﴿٢٣﴾

    kaḏḏabat ṯamūdu bi-n-nuḏuri

    [The people of] Thamud denied the warnings,

24. 54:24

    فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَبَشَرًا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدًا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًا لَّفِى ضَلَـٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍ﴿٢٤﴾

    fa-qālū ˈa-bašaran minnā wāḥidan nattabiʿuhū ˈinnā ˈiḏan la-fī ḍalālin wa-suʿurin

    and they said, ‘Are we to follow a lone human from ourselves?! Indeed then we would be in error and madness.’

25. 54:25

    أَءُلْقِىَ ٱلذِّكْرُ عَلَيْهِ مِنۢ بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرٌ﴿٢٥﴾

    ˈa-ˈulqiya ḏ-ḏikru ʿalayhi min bayninā bal huwa kaḏḏābun ˈaširun

    ‘Has the Reminder been cast upon him from among us? No, he is a self-conceited liar.’

26. 54:26

    سَيَعْلَمُونَ غَدًا مَّنِ ٱلْكَذَّابُ ٱلْأَشِرُ﴿٢٦﴾

    sa-yaʿlamūna ġadan mani l-kaḏḏābu l-ˈaširu

    ‘Tomorrow they will know who is a self-conceited liar.

27. 54:27

    إِنَّا مُرْسِلُوا۟ ٱلنَّاقَةِ فِتْنَةً لَّهُمْ فَٱرْتَقِبْهُمْ وَٱصْطَبِرْ﴿٢٧﴾

    ˈinnā mursilū n-nāqati fitnatan lahum fa-rtaqibhum wa-ṣṭabir

    We are sending the She-camel as a trial for them; so watch them and be steadfast.

28. 54:28

    وَنَبِّئْهُمْ أَنَّ ٱلْمَآءَ قِسْمَةٌۢ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ كُلُّ شِرْبٍ مُّحْتَضَرٌ﴿٢٨﴾

    wa-nabbiˈhum ˈanna l-māˈa qismatun baynahum kullu širbin muḥtaḍarun

    Inform them that the water is to be shared between them; each of them showing up at his turn.’

29. 54:29

    فَنَادَوْا۟ صَاحِبَهُمْ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ﴿٢٩﴾

    fa-nādaw ṣāḥibahum fa-taʿāṭā fa-ʿaqara

    But they called their companion, and he took [a knife] and hamstrung [her].

30. 54:30

    فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ﴿٣٠﴾

    fa-kayfa kāna ʿaḏābī wa-nuḏuri

    So how were My punishment and My warnings?!

31. 54:31

    إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً فَكَانُوا۟ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِ﴿٣١﴾

    ˈinnā ˈarsalnā ʿalayhim ṣayḥatan wāḥidatan fa-kānū ka-hašīmi l-muḥtaẓiri

    We sent against them a single Cry, and they became like the dry sticks of a corral builder.

32. 54:32

    وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ﴿٣٢﴾

    wa-la-qad yassarnā l-qurˈāna li-ḏ-ḏikri fa-hal min muddakirin

    Certainly We have made the Quran simple for the sake of admonishment. So is there anyone who will be admonished?

33. 54:33

    كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍۭ بِٱلنُّذُرِ﴿٣٣﴾

    kaḏḏabat qawmu lūṭin bi-n-nuḏuri

    And the people of Lot denied the warnings.

34. 54:34

    إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حَاصِبًا إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ۖ نَّجَّيْنَـٰهُم بِسَحَرٍ﴿٣٤﴾

    ˈinnā ˈarsalnā ʿalayhim ḥāṣiban ˈillā ˈāla lūṭin naǧǧaynāhum bi-saḥarin

    We unleashed upon them a rain of stones, excepting the family of Lot, whom We delivered at dawn

35. 54:35

    نِّعْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى مَن شَكَرَ﴿٣٥﴾

    niʿmatan min ʿindinā ka-ḏālika naǧzī man šakara

    as a blessing from Us. Thus do We reward those who give thanks.

36. 54:36

    وَلَقَدْ أَنذَرَهُم بَطْشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوْا۟ بِٱلنُّذُرِ﴿٣٦﴾

    wa-la-qad ˈanḏarahum baṭšatanā fa-tamāraw bi-n-nuḏuri

    He had already warned them of Our punishment, but they disputed the warnings.

37. 54:37

    وَلَقَدْ رَٰوَدُوهُ عَن ضَيْفِهِۦ فَطَمَسْنَآ أَعْيُنَهُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ﴿٣٧﴾

    wa-la-qad rāwadūhu ʿan ḍayfihī fa-ṭamasnā ˈaʿyunahum fa-ḏūqū ʿaḏābī wa-nuḏuri

    They even solicited of him his guests, whereat We blotted out their eyes, [saying,] ‘Taste My punishment and My warnings!’

38. 54:38

    وَلَقَدْ صَبَّحَهُم بُكْرَةً عَذَابٌ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ﴿٣٨﴾

    wa-la-qad ṣabbaḥahum bukratan ʿaḏābun mustaqirrun

    Early at dawn there visited them an abiding punishment:

39. 54:39

    فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ﴿٣٩﴾

    fa-ḏūqū ʿaḏābī wa-nuḏuri

    ‘Taste My punishment and warnings!’

40. 54:40

    وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ﴿٤٠﴾

    wa-la-qad yassarnā l-qurˈāna li-ḏ-ḏikri fa-hal min muddakirin

    Certainly We have made the Quran simple for the sake of admonishment. So is there anyone who will be admonished?

41. 54:41

    وَلَقَدْ جَآءَ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ ٱلنُّذُرُ﴿٤١﴾

    wa-la-qad ǧāˈa ˈāla firʿawna n-nuḏuru

    Certainly the warnings did come to Pharaoh’s clan

42. 54:42

    كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُمْ أَخْذَ عَزِيزٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍ﴿٤٢﴾

    kaḏḏabū bi-ˈāyātinā kullihā fa-ˈaḫaḏnāhum ˈaḫḏa ʿazīzin muqtadirin

    who denied all of Our signs. So We seized them with the seizing of One [who is] all-mighty, Omnipotent.

43. 54:43

    أَكُفَّارُكُمْ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكُمْ أَمْ لَكُم بَرَآءَةٌ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ﴿٤٣﴾

    ˈa-kuffārukum ḫayrun min ˈulāˈikum ˈam lakum barāˈatun fī z-zuburi

    Are your faithless better than those? Have you [been granted] [some sort of] immunity in the scriptures?

44. 54:44

    أَمْ يَقُولُونَ نَحْنُ جَمِيعٌ مُّنتَصِرٌ﴿٤٤﴾

    ˈam yaqūlūna naḥnu ǧamīʿun muntaṣirun

    Do they say, ‘We are a confederate league’?

45. 54:45

    سَيُهْزَمُ ٱلْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ ٱلدُّبُرَ﴿٤٥﴾

    sa-yuhzamu l-ǧamʿu wa-yuwallūna d-dubura

    The league will be routed and turn its back [to flee].

46. 54:46

    بَلِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ﴿٤٦﴾

    bali s-sāʿatu mawʿiduhum wa-s-sāʿatu ˈadhā wa-ˈamarru

    Indeed, the Hour is their tryst; and the Hour will be most calamitous and bitter.

47. 54:47

    إِنَّ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍ﴿٤٧﴾

    ˈinna l-muǧrimīna fī ḍalālin wa-suʿurin

    Indeed the guilty are steeped in error and madness.

48. 54:48

    يَوْمَ يُسْحَبُونَ فِى ٱلنَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمْ ذُوقُوا۟ مَسَّ سَقَرَ﴿٤٨﴾

    yawma yusḥabūna fī n-nāri ʿalā wuǧūhihim ḏūqū massa saqara

    The day when they are dragged on their faces into the Fire, [it will be said to them,] ‘Taste the touch of hell!’

49. 54:49

    إِنَّا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَـٰهُ بِقَدَرٍ﴿٤٩﴾

    ˈinnā kulla šayˈin ḫalaqnāhu bi-qadarin

    Indeed We have created everything in a measure,

50. 54:50

    وَمَآ أَمْرُنَآ إِلَّا وَٰحِدَةٌ كَلَمْحٍۭ بِٱلْبَصَرِ﴿٥٠﴾

    wa-mā ˈamrunā ˈillā wāḥidatun ka-lamḥin bi-l-baṣari

    and Our command is but a single [word], like the twinkling of an eye.

51. 54:51

    وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَآ أَشْيَاعَكُمْ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ﴿٥١﴾

    wa-la-qad ˈahlaknā ˈašyāʿakum fa-hal min muddakirin

    Certainly We have destroyed your likes. So is there anyone who will be admonished?

52. 54:52

    وَكُلُّ شَىْءٍ فَعَلُوهُ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ﴿٥٢﴾

    wa-kullu šayˈin faʿalūhu fī z-zuburi

    Everything they have done is in the books,

53. 54:53

    وَكُلُّ صَغِيرٍ وَكَبِيرٍ مُّسْتَطَرٌ﴿٥٣﴾

    wa-kullu ṣaġīrin wa-kabīrin mustaṭarun

    and everything big and small is committed to writing.

54. 54:54

    إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَنَهَرٍ﴿٥٤﴾

    ˈinna l-muttaqīna fī ǧannātin wa-naharin

    Indeed the Godwary will be amid gardens and streams,

55. 54:55

    فِى مَقْعَدِ صِدْقٍ عِندَ مَلِيكٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍۭ﴿٥٥﴾

    fī maqʿadi ṣidqin ʿinda malīkin muqtadirin

    in the abode of truthfulness with an omnipotent King.
