Surah Al-Muzzammil

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 73:1

   يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُزَّمِّلُ﴿١﴾

   yā-ˈayyuhā l-muzzammilu

   O you wrapped up in your mantle!

2. 73:2

   قُمِ ٱلَّيْلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا﴿٢﴾

   qumi l-layla ˈillā qalīlan

   Stand vigil through the night, except for a little [of it],

3. 73:3

   نِّصْفَهُۥٓ أَوِ ٱنقُصْ مِنْهُ قَلِيلًا﴿٣﴾

   niṣfahū ˈawi nquṣ minhu qalīlan

   a half, or reduce a little from that

4. 73:4

   أَوْ زِدْ عَلَيْهِ وَرَتِّلِ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ تَرْتِيلًا﴿٤﴾

   ˈaw zid ʿalayhi wa-rattili l-qurˈāna tartīlan

   or add to it, and recite the Quran in a measured tone.

5. 73:5

   إِنَّا سَنُلْقِى عَلَيْكَ قَوْلًا ثَقِيلًا﴿٥﴾

   ˈinnā sa-nulqī ʿalayka qawlan ṯaqīlan

   Indeed soon We shall cast on you a weighty discourse.

6. 73:6

   إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ ٱلَّيْلِ هِىَ أَشَدُّ وَطْـًٔا وَأَقْوَمُ قِيلًا﴿٦﴾

   ˈinna nāšiˈata l-layli hiya ˈašaddu waṭˈan wa-ˈaqwamu qīlan

   Indeed the watch of the night is firmer in tread and more upright in respect to speech,

7. 73:7

   إِنَّ لَكَ فِى ٱلنَّهَارِ سَبْحًا طَوِيلًا﴿٧﴾

   ˈinna laka fī n-nahāri sabḥan ṭawīlan

   for indeed during the day you have drawn-out engagements.

8. 73:8

   وَٱذْكُرِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلْ إِلَيْهِ تَبْتِيلًا﴿٨﴾

   wa-ḏkuri sma rabbika wa-tabattal ˈilayhi tabtīlan

   So celebrate the Name of your Lord and dedicate yourself to Him with total dedication.

9. 73:9

   رَّبُّ ٱلْمَشْرِقِ وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱتَّخِذْهُ وَكِيلًا﴿٩﴾

   rabbu l-mašriqi wa-l-maġribi lā ˈilāha ˈillā huwa fa-ttaḫiḏhu wakīlan

   Lord of the east and the west, there is no god except Him; so take Him for your trustee,

10. 73:10

    وَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَٱهْجُرْهُمْ هَجْرًا جَمِيلًا﴿١٠﴾

    wa-sbir ʿalā mā yaqūlūna wa-hǧurhum haǧran ǧamīlan

    and be patient over what they say, and distance yourself from them in a graceful manner.

11. 73:11

    وَذَرْنِى وَٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ أُو۟لِى ٱلنَّعْمَةِ وَمَهِّلْهُمْ قَلِيلًا﴿١١﴾

    wa-ḏarnī wa-l-mukaḏḏibīna ˈulī n-naʿmati wa-mahhilhum qalīlan

    Leave Me [to deal] with the deniers, the opulent, and give them a little respite.

12. 73:12

    إِنَّ لَدَيْنَآ أَنكَالًا وَجَحِيمًا﴿١٢﴾

    ˈinna ladaynā ˈankālan wa-ǧaḥīman

    Indeed with Us are heavy fetters and a fierce fire,

13. 73:13

    وَطَعَامًا ذَا غُصَّةٍ وَعَذَابًا أَلِيمًا﴿١٣﴾

    wa-ṭaʿāman ḏā ġuṣṣatin wa-ʿaḏāban ˈalīman

    and a food that chokes [those who eat it], and a painful punishment [prepared for]

14. 73:14

    يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَٱلْجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَثِيبًا مَّهِيلًا﴿١٤﴾

    yawma tarǧufu l-ˈarḍu wa-l-ǧibālu wa-kānati l-ǧibālu kaṯīban mahīlan

    the day when the earth and the mountains will quake, and the mountains will be like dunes of shifting sand.

15. 73:15

    إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَيْكُمْ رَسُولًا شَـٰهِدًا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ رَسُولًا﴿١٥﴾

    ˈinnā ˈarsalnā ˈilaykum rasūlan šāhidan ʿalaykum ka-mā ˈarsalnā ˈilā firʿawna rasūlan

    Indeed We have sent to you an apostle, to be a witness to you, just as We sent an apostle to Pharaoh.

16. 73:16

    فَعَصَىٰ فِرْعَوْنُ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُ أَخْذًا وَبِيلًا﴿١٦﴾

    fa-ʿaṣā firʿawnu r-rasūla fa-ˈaḫaḏnāhu ˈaḫḏan wabīlan

    But Pharaoh disobeyed the apostle; so We seized him with a terrible seizing.

17. 73:17

    فَكَيْفَ تَتَّقُونَ إِن كَفَرْتُمْ يَوْمًا يَجْعَلُ ٱلْوِلْدَٰنَ شِيبًا﴿١٧﴾

    fa-kayfa tattaqūna ˈin kafartum yawman yaǧʿalu l-wildāna šīban-i

    So, if you disbelieve, how will you avoid the day, which will make children white-headed,

18. 73:18

    ٱلسَّمَآءُ مُنفَطِرٌۢ بِهِۦ ۚ كَانَ وَعْدُهُۥ مَفْعُولًا﴿١٨﴾

    as-samāˈu munfaṭirun bihī kāna waʿduhū mafʿūlan

    and wherein the sky will be rent apart? His promise is bound to be fulfilled.

19. 73:19

    إِنَّ هَـٰذِهِۦ تَذْكِرَةٌ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلًا﴿١٩﴾

    ˈinna hāḏihī taḏkiratun fa-man šāˈa ttaḫaḏa ˈilā rabbihī sabīlan

    This is indeed a reminder. So let anyone who wishes take the way toward his Lord.

20. 73:20

    إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدْنَىٰ مِن ثُلُثَىِ ٱلَّيْلِ وَنِصْفَهُۥ وَثُلُثَهُۥ وَطَآئِفَةٌ مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ مَعَكَ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ يُقَدِّرُ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ ۚ عَلِمَ أَن لَّن تُحْصُوهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ ۖ فَٱقْرَءُوا۟ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ ٱلْقُرْءَانِ ۚ عَلِمَ أَن سَيَكُونُ مِنكُم مَّرْضَىٰ ۙ وَءَاخَرُونَ يَضْرِبُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يَبْتَغُونَ مِن فَضْلِ ٱللَّهِ ۙ وَءَاخَرُونَ يُقَـٰتِلُونَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ فَٱقْرَءُوا۟ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُ ۚ وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَأَقْرِضُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا ۚ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا۟ لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ هُوَ خَيْرًا وَأَعْظَمَ أَجْرًا ۚ وَٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌۢ﴿٢٠﴾

    ˈinna rabbaka yaʿlamu ˈannaka taqūmu ˈadnā min ṯuluṯayi l-layli wa-niṣfahū wa-ṯuluṯahū wa-ṭāˈifatun mina llaḏīna maʿaka wa-llāhu yuqaddiru l-layla wa-n-nahāra ʿalima ˈan lan tuḥṣūhu fa-tāba ʿalaykum fa-qraˈū mā tayassara mina l-qurˈāni ʿalima ˈan sa-yakūnu minkum marḍā wa-ˈāḫarūna yaḍribūna fī l-ˈarḍi yabtaġūna min faḍli llāhi wa-ˈāḫarūna yuqātilūna fī sabīli llāhi fa-qraˈū mā tayassara minhu wa-ˈaqīmū ṣ-ṣalāta wa-ˈātū z-zakāta wa-ˈaqriḍū llāha qarḍan ḥasanan wa-mā tuqaddimū li-ˈanfusikum min ḫayrin taǧidūhu ʿinda llāhi huwa ḫayran wa-ˈaʿẓama ˈaǧran wa-staġfirū llāha ˈinna llāha ġafūrun raḥīmun

    Indeed your Lord knows that you stand vigil for nearly two thirds of the night—or [at times] a half or a third of it—along with a group of those who are with you. Allah measures the night and the day. He knows that you cannot calculate it [exactly], and so He was lenient toward you. So recite as much of the Quran as is feasible. He knows that some of you will be sick, while others will travel in the land seeking Allah’s bounty, and yet others will fight in the way of Allah. So recite as much of it as is feasible, and maintain the prayer and pay the zakat and lend Allah a good loan. Whatever good you send ahead for your souls you will find it with Allah [in a form] that is better and greater with respect to reward. And plead to Allah for forgiveness; indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.
