Surah Al-Muddaththir

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 74:1

   يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ﴿١﴾

   yā-ˈayyuhā l-muddaṯṯiru

   O you wrapped up in your mantle!

2. 74:2

   قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ﴿٢﴾

   qum fa-ˈanḏir

   Rise up and warn!

3. 74:3

   وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ﴿٣﴾

   wa-rabbaka fa-kabbir

   Magnify your Lord,

4. 74:4

   وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ﴿٤﴾

   wa-ṯiyābaka fa-ṭahhir

   and purify your clothes,

5. 74:5

   وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ﴿٥﴾

   wa-r-ruǧza fa-hǧur

   and keep away from all impurity!

6. 74:6

   وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ﴿٦﴾

   wa-lā tamnun tastakṯiru

   Do not grant a favour seeking a greater gain,

7. 74:7

   وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ﴿٧﴾

   wa-li-rabbika fa-ṣbir

   and be patient for the sake of your Lord.

8. 74:8

   فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ﴿٨﴾

   fa-ˈiḏā nuqira fī n-nāqūri

   When the Trumpet will be sounded,

9. 74:9

   فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ﴿٩﴾

   fa-ḏālika yawmaˈiḏin yawmun ʿasīrun

   that will be a day of hardship,

10. 74:10

    عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ﴿١٠﴾

    ʿalā l-kāfirīna ġayru yasīrin

    not at all easy for the faithless.

11. 74:11

    ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا﴿١١﴾

    ḏarnī wa-man ḫalaqtu waḥīdan

    Leave Me [to deal] with him whom I created alone,

12. 74:12

    وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا﴿١٢﴾

    wa-ǧaʿaltu lahū mālan mamdūdan

    and furnished him with extensive means,

13. 74:13

    وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا﴿١٣﴾

    wa-banīna šuhūdan

    [gave him] sons to be at his side,

14. 74:14

    وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًا﴿١٤﴾

    wa-mahhadtu lahū tamhīdan

    and facilitated [all matters] for him.

15. 74:15

    ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ﴿١٥﴾

    ṯumma yaṭmaʿu ˈan ˈazīda

    Still he is eager that I should give him more.

16. 74:16

    كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا عَنِيدًا﴿١٦﴾

    kallā ˈinnahū kāna li-ˈāyātinā ʿanīdan

    No indeed! He is an obstinate opponent of Our signs.

17. 74:17

    سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا﴿١٧﴾

    sa-ˈurhiquhū ṣaʿūdan

    Soon I will overwhelm him with hardship.

18. 74:18

    إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ﴿١٨﴾

    ˈinnahū fakkara wa-qaddara

    Indeed he reflected and decided.

19. 74:19

    فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ﴿١٩﴾

    fa-qutila kayfa qaddara

    Perish he, how he decided!

20. 74:20

    ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ﴿٢٠﴾

    ṯumma qutila kayfa qaddara

    Again, perish he, how he decided!

21. 74:21

    ثُمَّ نَظَرَ﴿٢١﴾

    ṯumma naẓara

    Then he looked;

22. 74:22

    ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ﴿٢٢﴾

    ṯumma ʿabasa wa-basara

    then frowned and scowled.

23. 74:23

    ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ﴿٢٣﴾

    ṯumma ˈadbara wa-stakbara

    Then he walked away disdainfully,

24. 74:24

    فَقَالَ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ﴿٢٤﴾

    fa-qāla ˈin hāḏā ˈillā siḥrun yuˈṯaru

    saying, ‘It is nothing but traditional sorcery.

25. 74:25

    إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ﴿٢٥﴾

    ˈin hāḏā ˈillā qawlu l-bašari

    It is nothing but the speech of a human.’

26. 74:26

    سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ﴿٢٦﴾

    sa-ˈuṣlīhi saqara

    Soon I will cast him into Saqar.

27. 74:27

    وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ﴿٢٧﴾

    wa-mā ˈadrāka mā saqaru

    And what will show you what is Saqar?

28. 74:28

    لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ﴿٢٨﴾

    lā tubqī wa-lā taḏaru

    It neither spares, nor leaves [anything].

29. 74:29

    لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ﴿٢٩﴾

    lawwāḥatun li-l-bašari

    It burns the skin.

30. 74:30

    عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ﴿٣٠﴾

    ʿalayhā tisʿata ʿašara

    There are nineteen [keepers] over it.

31. 74:31

    وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَـٰنًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ﴿٣١﴾

    wa-mā ǧaʿalnā ˈaṣḥāba n-nāri ˈillā malāˈikatan wa-mā ǧaʿalnā ʿiddatahum ˈillā fitnatan li-llaḏīna kafarū li-yastayqina llaḏīna ˈūtū l-kitāba wa-yazdāda llaḏīna ˈāmanū ˈīmānan wa-lā yartāba llaḏīna ˈūtū l-kitāba wa-l-muˈminūna wa-li-yaqūla llaḏīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun wa-l-kāfirūna māḏā ˈarāda llāhu bi-hāḏā maṯalan ka-ḏālika yuḍillu llāhu man yašāˈu wa-yahdī man yašāˈu wa-mā yaʿlamu ǧunūda rabbika ˈillā huwa wa-mā hiya ˈillā ḏikrā li-l-bašari

    We have assigned only angels as keepers of the Fire, and We have made their number merely a stumbling block for the faithless, and so that those who were given the Book may be reassured, and the faithful may increase in [their] faith, and so that those who were given the Book and the faithful may not be in doubt, and so that the faithless and those in whose hearts is a sickness may say, ‘What did Allah mean by this description?’ Thus does Allah lead astray whomever He wishes and guides whomever He wishes. No one knows the hosts of your Lord except Him, and it is just an admonition for all humans.

32. 74:32

    كَلَّا وَٱلْقَمَرِ﴿٣٢﴾

    kallā wa-l-qamari

    No indeed! By the Moon!

33. 74:33

    وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ﴿٣٣﴾

    wa-l-layli ˈiḏ ˈadbara

    By the night when it recedes!

34. 74:34

    وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ﴿٣٤﴾

    wa-ṣ-ṣubḥi ˈiḏā ˈasfara

    By the dawn when it brightens!

35. 74:35

    إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى ٱلْكُبَرِ﴿٣٥﴾

    ˈinnahā la-ˈiḥdā l-kubari

    Indeed they are one of the greatest [signs of God]

36. 74:36

    نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ﴿٣٦﴾

    naḏīran li-l-bašari

    —a warner to all humans,

37. 74:37

    لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ﴿٣٧﴾

    li-man šāˈa minkum ˈan yataqaddama ˈaw yataˈaḫḫara

    [alike] for those of you who like to advance ahead and those who would remain behind.

38. 74:38

    كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ﴿٣٨﴾

    kullu nafsin bi-mā kasabat rahīnatun

    Every soul is hostage to what it has earned,

39. 74:39

    إِلَّآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ﴿٣٩﴾

    ˈillā ˈaṣḥāba l-yamīni

    except the People of the Right Hand.

40. 74:40

    فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ﴿٤٠﴾

    fī ǧannātin yatasāˈalūna

    [They will be] in gardens, questioning

41. 74:41

    عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ﴿٤١﴾

    ʿani l-muǧrimīna

    the guilty:

42. 74:42

    مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ﴿٤٢﴾

    mā salakakum fī saqara

    ‘What drew you into Hell?’

43. 74:43

    قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ﴿٤٣﴾

    qālū lam naku mina l-muṣallīna

    They will answer, ‘We were not among those who prayed.

44. 74:44

    وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ﴿٤٤﴾

    wa-lam naku nuṭʿimu l-miskīna

    Nor did we feed the poor.

45. 74:45

    وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ﴿٤٥﴾

    wa-kunnā naḫūḍu maʿa l-ḫāˈiḍīna

    We used to indulge in [profane] gossip along with the gossipers,

46. 74:46

    وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ﴿٤٦﴾

    wa-kunnā nukaḏḏibu bi-yawmi d-dīni

    and we used to deny the Day of Retribution

47. 74:47

    حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ﴿٤٧﴾

    ḥattā ˈatānā l-yaqīnu

    until death came to us.’

48. 74:48

    فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ﴿٤٨﴾

    fa-mā tanfaʿuhum šafāʿatu š-šāfiʿīna

    So the intercession of the intercessors will not avail them.

49. 74:49

    فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ﴿٤٩﴾

    fa-mā lahum ʿani t-taḏkirati muʿriḍīna

    What is the matter with them that they evade the Reminder

50. 74:50

    كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ﴿٥٠﴾

    ka-ˈannahum ḥumurun mustanfiratun

    as if they were terrified asses

51. 74:51

    فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ﴿٥١﴾

    farrat min qaswaratin

    fleeing from a lion?

52. 74:52

    بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً﴿٥٢﴾

    bal yurīdu kullu mriˈin minhum ˈan yuˈtā ṣuḥufan munaššaratan

    But everyone of them desires to be given unrolled scriptures [from Allah]!

53. 74:53

    كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ﴿٥٣﴾

    kallā bal lā yaḫāfūna l-ˈāḫirata

    No! Indeed, they do not fear the Hereafter.

54. 74:54

    كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌ﴿٥٤﴾

    kallā ˈinnahū taḏkiratun

    No! It is indeed a reminder.

55. 74:55

    فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ﴿٥٥﴾

    fa-man šāˈa ḏakarahū

    So let anyone who wishes be mindful of it.

56. 74:56

    وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ﴿٥٦﴾

    wa-mā yaḏkurūna ˈillā ˈan yašāˈa llāhu huwa ˈahlu t-taqwā wa-ˈahlu l-maġfirati

    And they will not be mindful unless Allah wishes. He is worthy of [your] being wary [of Him] and He is worthy to forgive.
