Surah Al-Mutaffifin

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 83:1

   وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ﴿١﴾

   waylun li-l-muṭaffifīna

   Woe to the defrauders, who use short measures,

2. 83:2

   ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكْتَالُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ﴿٢﴾

   allaḏīna ˈiḏā ktālū ʿalā n-nāsi yastawfūna

   who, when they measure [a commodity bought] from the people, take the full measure,

3. 83:3

   وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ﴿٣﴾

   wa-ˈiḏā kālūhum ˈaw wazanūhum yuḫsirūna

   but diminish when they measure or weigh for them.

4. 83:4

   أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ﴿٤﴾

   ˈa-lā yaẓunnu ˈulāˈika ˈannahum mabʿūṯūna

   Do they not know that they will be resurrected

5. 83:5

   لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ﴿٥﴾

   li-yawmin ʿaẓīmin

   on a tremendous day,

6. 83:6

   يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ﴿٦﴾

   yawma yaqūmu n-nāsu li-rabbi l-ʿālamīna

   a day when mankind will stand before the Lord of all the worlds?

7. 83:7

   كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْفُجَّارِ لَفِى سِجِّينٍ﴿٧﴾

   kallā ˈinna kitāba l-fuǧǧāri la-fī siǧǧīnin

   Indeed, the record of the vicious is in Sijjeen.

8. 83:8

   وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سِجِّينٌ﴿٨﴾

   wa-mā ˈadrāka mā siǧǧīnun

   And what will show you what is Sijjeen?

9. 83:9

   كِتَـٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ﴿٩﴾

   kitābun marqūmun

   It is a written record.

10. 83:10

    وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ﴿١٠﴾

    waylun yawmaˈiḏin li-l-mukaḏḏibīna

    Woe to the deniers on that day,

11. 83:11

    ٱلَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ﴿١١﴾

    allaḏīna yukaḏḏibūna bi-yawmi d-dīni

    who deny the Day of Retribution;

12. 83:12

    وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ﴿١٢﴾

    wa-mā yukaḏḏibu bihī ˈillā kullu muʿtadin ˈaṯīmin

    and none denies it except every sinful transgressor.

13. 83:13

    إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَـٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَـٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ﴿١٣﴾

    ˈiḏā tutlā ʿalayhi ˈāyātunā qāla ˈasāṭīru l-ˈawwalīna

    When Our signs are recited to him, he says, ‘Myths of the ancients!’

14. 83:14

    كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ﴿١٤﴾

    kallā bal rāna ʿalā qulūbihim mā kānū yaksibūna

    No, that is not the case! Rather, their hearts have been sullied by what they have been earning.

15. 83:15

    كَلَّآ إِنَّهُمْ عَن رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ﴿١٥﴾

    kallā ˈinnahum ʿan rabbihim yawmaˈiḏin la-maḥǧūbūna

    Indeed, they will be alienated from their Lord on that day.

16. 83:16

    ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُوا۟ ٱلْجَحِيمِ﴿١٦﴾

    ṯumma ˈinnahum la-ṣālū l-ǧaḥīmi

    Afterward they will enter hell,

17. 83:17

    ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ﴿١٧﴾

    ṯumma yuqālu hāḏā llaḏī kuntum bihī tukaḏḏibūna

    then told, ‘This is what you used to deny!’

18. 83:18

    كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْأَبْرَارِ لَفِى عِلِّيِّينَ﴿١٨﴾

    kallā ˈinna kitāba l-ˈabrāri la-fī ʿilliyyīna

    Indeed, the record of the pious is in Illeeyun.

19. 83:19

    وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ﴿١٩﴾

    wa-mā ˈadrāka mā ʿilliyyūna

    And what will show you what is Illeeyun?

20. 83:20

    كِتَـٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ﴿٢٠﴾

    kitābun marqūmun

    It is a written record,

21. 83:21

    يَشْهَدُهُ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ﴿٢١﴾

    yašhaduhu l-muqarrabūna

    witnessed by those brought near [to Allah].

22. 83:22

    إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ﴿٢٢﴾

    ˈinna l-ˈabrāra la-fī naʿīmin

    The pious shall be amid bliss,

23. 83:23

    عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ﴿٢٣﴾

    ʿalā l-ˈarāˈiki yanẓurūna

    observing, [as they recline] on couches.

24. 83:24

    تَعْرِفُ فِى وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ﴿٢٤﴾

    taʿrifu fī wuǧūhihim naḍrata n-naʿīmi

    You will perceive in their faces the freshness of bliss.

25. 83:25

    يُسْقَوْنَ مِن رَّحِيقٍ مَّخْتُومٍ﴿٢٥﴾

    yusqawna min raḥīqin maḫtūmin

    They will be served with a sealed pure wine,

26. 83:26

    خِتَـٰمُهُۥ مِسْكٌ ۚ وَفِى ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلْمُتَنَـٰفِسُونَ﴿٢٦﴾

    ḫitāmuhū miskun wa-fī ḏālika fa-l-yatanāfasi l-mutanāfisūna

    whose seal is musk—for such let the viers vie—

27. 83:27

    وَمِزَاجُهُۥ مِن تَسْنِيمٍ﴿٢٧﴾

    wa-mizāǧuhū min tasnīmin

    and whose seasoning is from Tasneem,

28. 83:28

    عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ﴿٢٨﴾

    ʿaynan yašrabu bihā l-muqarrabūna

    a spring where those brought near [to Allah] drink.

29. 83:29

    إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا۟ كَانُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يَضْحَكُونَ﴿٢٩﴾

    ˈinna llaḏīna ˈaǧramū kānū mina llaḏīna ˈāmanū yaḍḥakūna

    Indeed the guilty used to laugh at the faithful,

30. 83:30

    وَإِذَا مَرُّوا۟ بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ﴿٣٠﴾

    wa-ˈiḏā marrū bihim yataġāmazūna

    and when they passed them by they would wink at each other,

31. 83:31

    وَإِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمُ ٱنقَلَبُوا۟ فَكِهِينَ﴿٣١﴾

    wa-ˈiḏā nqalabū ˈilā ˈahlihimu nqalabū fakihīna

    and when they returned to their folks they would return amused,

32. 83:32

    وَإِذَا رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّونَ﴿٣٢﴾

    wa-ˈiḏā raˈawhum qālū ˈinna hāˈulāˈi la-ḍāllūna

    and when they saw them they would say, ‘Indeed those are the astray!’

33. 83:33

    وَمَآ أُرْسِلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ حَـٰفِظِينَ﴿٣٣﴾

    wa-mā ˈursilū ʿalayhim ḥāfizīna

    Though they were not sent to watch over them.

34. 83:34

    فَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ﴿٣٤﴾

    fa-l-yawma llaḏīna ˈāmanū mina l-kuffāri yaḍḥakūna

    So today the faithful will laugh at the faithless,

35. 83:35

    عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ﴿٣٥﴾

    ʿalā l-ˈarāˈiki yanẓurūna

    observing from their couches:

36. 83:36

    هَلْ ثُوِّبَ ٱلْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْعَلُونَ﴿٣٦﴾

    hal ṯuwwiba l-kuffāru mā kānū yafʿalūna

    Have the faithless been requited for what they used to do?
