Surah Al-Fajr

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 89:1

   وَٱلْفَجْرِ﴿١﴾

   wa-l-faǧri

   By the Dawn,

2. 89:2

   وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ﴿٢﴾

   wa-layālin ʿašrin

   by the ten nights,

3. 89:3

   وَٱلشَّفْعِ وَٱلْوَتْرِ﴿٣﴾

   wa-š-šafʿi wa-l-watri

   by the Even and the Odd,

4. 89:4

   وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ﴿٤﴾

   wa-l-layli ˈiḏā yasri

   by the night when it departs!

5. 89:5

   هَلْ فِى ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِى حِجْرٍ﴿٥﴾

   hal fī ḏālika qasamun li-ḏī ḥiǧrin

   Is there an oath in that for one possessing intellect?

6. 89:6

   أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ﴿٦﴾

   ˈa-lam tara kayfa faʿala rabbuka bi-ʿādin

   Have you not regarded how your Lord dealt with [the people of] ‘Ad,

7. 89:7

   إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلْعِمَادِ﴿٧﴾

   ˈirama ḏāti l-ʿimādi

   [and] Iram, [the city] of the pillars,

8. 89:8

   ٱلَّتِى لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ﴿٨﴾

   allatī lam yuḫlaq miṯluhā fī l-bilādi

   the like of which was not created among cities,

9. 89:9

   وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُوا۟ ٱلصَّخْرَ بِٱلْوَادِ﴿٩﴾

   wa-ṯamūda llaḏīna ǧābū ṣ-ṣaḫra bi-l-wādi

   and [the people of] Thamud, who hollowed out the rocks in the valley,

10. 89:10

    وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِى ٱلْأَوْتَادِ﴿١٠﴾

    wa-firʿawna ḏī l-ˈawtādi

    and Pharaoh, the impaler

11. 89:11

    ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ﴿١١﴾

    allaḏīna ṭaġaw fī l-bilādi

    —those who rebelled [against Allah] in their cities

12. 89:12

    فَأَكْثَرُوا۟ فِيهَا ٱلْفَسَادَ﴿١٢﴾

    fa-ˈakṯarū fīhā l-fasāda

    and caused much corruption in them,

13. 89:13

    فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ﴿١٣﴾

    fa-ṣabba ʿalayhim rabbuka sawṭa ʿaḏābin

    so your Lord poured on them lashes of punishment.

14. 89:14

    إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ﴿١٤﴾

    ˈinna rabbaka la-bi-l-mirṣādi

    Indeed your Lord is in ambush.

15. 89:15

    فَأَمَّا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَكْرَمَنِ﴿١٥﴾

    fa-ˈammā l-ˈinsānu ˈiḏā mā btalāhu rabbuhū fa-ˈakramahū wa-naʿʿamahū fa-yaqūlu rabbī ˈakramani

    As for man, whenever his Lord tests him, and grants him honour, and blesses him, he says, ‘My Lord has honoured me.’

16. 89:16

    وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَـٰنَنِ﴿١٦﴾

    wa-ˈammā ˈiḏā mā btalāhu fa-qadara ʿalayhi rizqahū fa-yaqūlu rabbī ˈahānani

    But when He tests him and tightens for him his provision, he says, ‘My Lord has humiliated me.’

17. 89:17

    كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ ٱلْيَتِيمَ﴿١٧﴾

    kallā bal lā tukrimūna l-yatīma

    No indeed! No, you do not honour the orphan,

18. 89:18

    وَلَا تَحَـٰٓضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ﴿١٨﴾

    wa-lā taḥāḍḍūna ʿalā ṭaʿāmi l-miskīni

    and do not urge the feeding of the needy.

19. 89:19

    وَتَأْكُلُونَ ٱلتُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا﴿١٩﴾

    wa-taˈkulūna t-turāṯa ˈaklan lamman

    You eat the inheritance rapaciously,

20. 89:20

    وَتُحِبُّونَ ٱلْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا﴿٢٠﴾

    wa-tuḥibbūna l-māla ḥubban ǧamman

    and love wealth with much fondness.

21. 89:21

    كَلَّآ إِذَا دُكَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا﴿٢١﴾

    kallā ˈiḏā dukkati l-ˈarḍu dakkan dakkan

    No indeed! When the earth is levelled to a plain,

22. 89:22

    وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَٱلْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا﴿٢٢﴾

    wa-ǧāˈa rabbuka wa-l-malaku ṣaffan ṣaffan

    and your Lord [’s edict] arrives with the angels in ranks,

23. 89:23

    وَجِا۟ىٓءَ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ﴿٢٣﴾

    wa-ǧīˈa yawmaˈiḏin bi-ǧahannama yawmaˈiḏin yataḏakkaru l-ˈinsānu wa-ˈannā lahu ḏ-ḏikrā

    the day when hell is brought [near], man will take admonition on that day, but what will that admonition avail him?

24. 89:24

    يَقُولُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِى﴿٢٤﴾

    yaqūlu yā-laytanī qaddamtu li-ḥayātī

    He will say, ‘Alas, had I sent ahead for my life [in the Hereafter]!’

25. 89:25

    فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ﴿٢٥﴾

    fa-yawmaˈiḏin lā yuʿaḏḏibu ʿaḏābahū ˈaḥadun

    On that day none shall punish as He punishes,

26. 89:26

    وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ﴿٢٦﴾

    wa-lā yūṯiqu waṯāqahū ˈaḥadun

    and none shall bind as He binds.

27. 89:27

    يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ﴿٢٧﴾

    yā-ˈayyatuhā n-nafsu l-muṭmaˈinnatu

    ‘O soul at peace!

28. 89:28

    ٱرْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً﴿٢٨﴾

    irǧiʿī ˈilā rabbiki rāḍiyatan marḍiyyatan

    Return to your Lord, pleased and pleasing!

29. 89:29

    فَٱدْخُلِى فِى عِبَـٰدِى﴿٢٩﴾

    fa-dḫulī fī ʿibādī

    Then enter among My servants,

30. 89:30

    وَٱدْخُلِى جَنَّتِى﴿٣٠﴾

    wa-dḫulī ǧannatī

    and enter My paradise!’
