Surah Al-Balad

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 90:1

   لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ﴿١﴾

   lā ˈuqsimu bi-hāḏā l-baladi

   I swear by this town,

2. 90:2

   وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ﴿٢﴾

   wa-ˈanta ḥillun bi-hāḏā l-baladi

   as you reside in this town;

3. 90:3

   وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ﴿٣﴾

   wa-wālidin wa-mā walada

   [and] by the father and him whom he begot:

4. 90:4

   لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ﴿٤﴾

   la-qad ḫalaqnā l-ˈinsāna fī kabadin

   certainly We created man in travail.

5. 90:5

   أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ﴿٥﴾

   ˈa-yaḥsabu ˈan lan yaqdira ʿalayhi ˈaḥadun

   Does he suppose that no one will ever have power over him?

6. 90:6

   يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا﴿٦﴾

   yaqūlu ˈahlaktu mālan lubadan

   He says, ‘I have squandered immense wealth.’

7. 90:7

   أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ﴿٧﴾

   ˈa-yaḥsabu ˈan lam yarahū ˈaḥadun

   Does he suppose that no one sees him?

8. 90:8

   أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ﴿٨﴾

   ˈa-lam naǧʿal lahū ʿaynayni

   Have We not made for him two eyes,

9. 90:9

   وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ﴿٩﴾

   wa-lisānan wa-šafatayni

   a tongue, and two lips,

10. 90:10

    وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ﴿١٠﴾

    wa-hadaynāhu n-naǧdayni

    and shown him the two paths [of good and evil]?

11. 90:11

    فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ﴿١١﴾

    fa-lā qtaḥama l-ʿaqabata

    Yet he has not embarked upon the uphill task.

12. 90:12

    وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ﴿١٢﴾

    wa-mā ˈadrāka mā l-ʿaqabatu

    And what will show you what is the uphill task?

13. 90:13

    فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ﴿١٣﴾

    fakku raqabatin

    [It is] the freeing of a slave,

14. 90:14

    أَوْ إِطْعَـٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ﴿١٤﴾

    ˈaw ˈiṭʿāmun fī yawmin ḏī masġabatin

    or feeding, during days of [general] starvation,

15. 90:15

    يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ﴿١٥﴾

    yatīman ḏā maqrabatin

    an orphan among relatives

16. 90:16

    أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ﴿١٦﴾

    ˈaw miskīnan ḏā matrabatin

    or a needy man in desolation,

17. 90:17

    ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ﴿١٧﴾

    ṯumma kāna mina llaḏīna ˈāmanū wa-tawāṣaw bi-ṣ-ṣabri wa-tawāṣaw bi-l-marḥamati

    while being one of those who have faith and enjoin one another to patience, and enjoin one another to compassion.

18. 90:18

    أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ﴿١٨﴾

    ˈulāˈika ˈaṣḥābu l-maymanati

    They are the People of the Right Hand.

19. 90:19

    وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ﴿١٩﴾

    wa-llaḏīna kafarū bi-ˈāyātinā hum ˈaṣḥābu l-mašˈamati

    But those who defy Our signs, they are the People of the Left Hand.

20. 90:20

    عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ﴿٢٠﴾

    ʿalayhim nārun muˈṣadatun

    A closed Fire will be [imposed] upon them.
