Surah Ash-Shams

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 91:1

   وَٱلشَّمْسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا﴿١﴾

   wa-š-šamsi wa-ḍuḥāhā

   By the sun and her forenoon splendour,

2. 91:2

   وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا﴿٢﴾

   wa-l-qamari ˈiḏā talāhā

   by the moon when he follows her,

3. 91:3

   وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا﴿٣﴾

   wa-n-nahāri ˈiḏā ǧallāhā

   by the day when it reveals her,

4. 91:4

   وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰهَا﴿٤﴾

   wa-l-layli ˈiḏā yaġšāhā

   by the night when it covers her,

5. 91:5

   وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا﴿٥﴾

   wa-s-samāˈi wa-mā banāhā

   by the sky and Him who built it,

6. 91:6

   وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا﴿٦﴾

   wa-l-ˈarḍi wa-mā ṭaḥāhā

   by the earth and Him who spread it,

7. 91:7

   وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا﴿٧﴾

   wa-nafsin wa-mā sawwāhā

   by the soul and Him who fashioned it,

8. 91:8

   فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَىٰهَا﴿٨﴾

   fa-ˈalhamahā fuǧūrahā wa-taqwāhā

   and inspired it with [discernment between] its virtues and vices:

9. 91:9

   قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا﴿٩﴾

   qad ˈaflaḥa man zakkāhā

   one who purifies it is felicitous,

10. 91:10

    وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا﴿١٠﴾

    wa-qad ḫāba man dassāhā

    and one who betrays it fails.

11. 91:11

    كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَىٰهَآ﴿١١﴾

    kaḏḏabat ṯamūdu bi-ṭaġwāhā

    The [people of] Thamud denied [Allah’s signs] out of their rebellion,

12. 91:12

    إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشْقَىٰهَا﴿١٢﴾

    ˈiḏi nbaʿaṯa ˈašqāhā

    when the most wretched of them rose up.

13. 91:13

    فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقْيَـٰهَا﴿١٣﴾

    fa-qāla lahum rasūlu llāhi nāqata llāhi wa-suqyāhā

    The apostle of Allah had told them, ‘This is Allah’s she-camel, let her drink!’

14. 91:14

    فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسَوَّىٰهَا﴿١٤﴾

    fa-kaḏḏabūhu fa-ʿaqarūhā fa-damdama ʿalayhim rabbuhum bi-ḏanbihim fa-sawwāhā

    But they impugned him and hamstrung her. So their Lord took them unawares by night because of their sin, and levelled it.

15. 91:15

    وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَـٰهَا﴿١٥﴾

    wa-lā yaḫāfu ʿuqbāhā

    And He does not fear its outcome.
